  • LASEMA rescues 10 people from collapsed building on Lagos Island

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency was uncertain about the number of people rescued, after a four-storey building containing a nursery/primary school collapsed in Itafaji, in Lagos Island today.

LASEMA revealed its handicap in a Twitter post when it said an ‘unspecified number of people were recovered from the rubble before the arrival of the emergency responders on the incident scene”.

However, the agency said its rescue team and other agencies brought out 10 people alive, made up of 3 adult females, 1 adult male, 2 teenage boys, 1 young boy and 3 teenage girls. Dr Titilayo Goncalves, permanent secretary of the health ministry said 20 people were brought out from the wreckage and they were receiving treatment from various hospitals.

Other emergency services that joined in the rescue bid were LASG FIRE, LASAMBUS, NEMA, FED FIRE, Nigeria Police, NSCDC, LNSC and the RED CROSS.

The four-storey building near Massey Children Hospital collapsed this morning while children were having classes on the third floor.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode raced to the scene and was briefed by LASEMA officials on ground.

Parents of the pupils jammed the site of the incident wailing and shouting, expecting to see their children brought out alive.

NAN correspondent who was at the scene of the incident reports that the building collapsed about 10: am on Wednesday.

According to some residents of the area, the building was earlier marked for demolition before it was renovated.

One of the parents said her son was rescued by the neighbours who quickly ran to the site.

“My son was just lucky for him to have been rescued alive. The neighbours ran to the building immediately it collapsed.

“People in the neighbourhood started the rescue before the state rescue team arrived. I sincerely thank God and the people in the area,”she said.

A witness who pleaded anonymity said staff of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), came for inspection of the building regularly.

“This building was marked for demolition. We kept seeing people from Alausa coming to inspect the building, and the next thing we saw was the same building undergoing renovation.

“The state regulatory body is not strict with its policies. Such calamity would have been avoided if the right action was taken by demolishing the building. We pray people will be evacuated safely.’’

However, rescue teams, especially ambulances found it difficult to gain access into the scene due to the crowd that gathered at the scene.

  • LASEMA rescues two crash victims

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) on Tuesday rescued two accident victims on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

They were reportedly trapped under two vehicles that collided at Cele bus stop.

An over-speeding diesel-laden tanker rammed into a stationary trailer at the bus stop.

LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu told The Nation yesterday that the accident was avoidable.

He said: “Motorists should always ensure that they drive within the approved speed limit, obey road signs and be vigilant. They should watch out for obstruction and activities of other road users, to avoid crash.

“That accident was avoidable. It was caused by overspeeding by the driver of the articulated gas truck, which rammed into another stationary containarised truck.

“When we received distress call, we activated our emergency response team and moved to the scene.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the driver of the gas truck lost control while on high speed and rammed into a containerised truck parked by the roadside.

“Nobody died, but three persons were injured. One of the victims was taken to an unknown hospital before the arrival of the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU). The other two, who were trapped, were rescued with the aid of the agency’s extrication equipment.

“They were thereafter attended to by the agency’s paramedic and Lagos State Ambilance Service (LASAMBUS) before being moved to the Trauma Centre for further treatment. The articulated trucks were recovered to restore normalcy and free vehicular movement at the axis.

“The police and other security agents will carry out further investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

  • Fire disrupts services at Ecobank head office

For over three hours, fire disrupted banking services at head office of Ecobank Nigeria Ltd. on Ahmadu Bello Way, Lagos, on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondents who visited the scene of the fire incident report that the fire started at 8.30am.

An eye witness, Mr Malachy Okoli told NAN, that the fire started when a tanker was discharging diesel into the bank’s fuel dump.

Okoli told NAN that staffers of some commercial banks around Eco Bank were used their fire extinguishers to control the fire before the

arrival of officials the Federal Fire Service.

NAN reports that some youths were seeing around the place scooping diesel from the gutter not minding the risk factor and a lot of

shanties around the bank were destroyed by the inferno.

While addressing journalists, Comptroller Ganiyu Olayewola, Deputy Commanding Officer, Lagos Command, Federal Fire Service, said

the bank alerted them at about 8.55am.

“We quickly alerted our people and we were able to contain the fire, the first thing we did was to evacuate all the personnel and secured

the area so that we would be able to perform our work effectively,” Olayewola said.

Mr Femi Giwa, Director of Operations, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said the agency was alerted at about

    8.55am.

“At about 8.55 am, we got a distress call at the Lagos State command and control centre concerning an inferno within the Ecobank head

    office.

“We activated our response and mobilised our respondents to the scene of the incident,” Giwa said.

He said officials of the agency discovered a tanker with 33,000 litres diesel, while trans-loading caught fire.

“We need to appreciate the Lagos State fire service, the Federal fire service and LASEMA Response Unit, the Ecobank Fire unit, UBA fire

unit, Julius Berger and others for their efforts.

“We were able to contain the inferno within the generator area where they have the tank and the building, as I speak to you is in good

condition and the adjourning buildings were not affected.

“Personnel and occupants within the building were evacuated within the muster point. We recorded no injury, no death and I speak to you

we were at the dampening stage,” Giwa said.

Mr Tunde Dawodu, representative of Ecobank, said the fire started at about 8.40 am, when a tanker that came to supply diesel apparently

    got fire.

“Immediately we activated the emergency protocol and all staff were evacuated from the building even though it was not affecting the

    building.

“We decided to fight it with fire gadgets that we had and we reached to the fire departments, the state, the federal, LASEMA and some

    other corporate organisations.

“As you can see it is just the tanker and one of our generators that were affected, it did not affect the building, the personnel or our

    operations,” Dawodu said.

  • Fire razes Binukonu market Ojota, goods worth millions destroyed

Fire gutted a section of Binukonu Ultra Modern Market, Ojota in Lagos in the early hours of Friday, destroying goods and property worth millions of Naira.

This was the third fire incident at the market in three years. Previous incidents occurred in 2015 and November 2017.

Friday’s fire, which was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault, started at 1.30am and razed over fifty stalls in the market.

At 4.10am when our correspondent arrived at the scene, firefighters who came with two trucks from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency ( LASEMA ) were seen putting out the blaze, which was still raging.

Panicky traders tried to salvage their goods in their shops from the approaching fire.

Alhaja Rehanat Salami, the female Head of the market ( Iya-Oloja ) said that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

She said: “I didn’t look at the time when I received a phone call that the market was burning when I hurriedly started coming here.

“When the fire occurred on the two previous occasions, we did everything the government instructed us to do.

“When the fire occurred the first time, the government helped us to reconstruct the affected stalls for free.

“I heard that this fire was caused by an electrical spark, I had warned everyone to always turn off their electricity connections when there is a power outage.

“We make sure we put off all the lights when we close for the day at the market.”

The secretary of the market, Mr Gbenga Fayemi revealed previous efforts the management of the market had made to prevent a reccurrence of a fire outbreak.

“This fire that occurred just now is the third time that it is occurring, the first was three years ago and the last one occurred last year.

“The traders had not fully recovered from the previous incidents when this one occurred despite all our efforts to prevent a reoccurrence.

“When the first incident occurred Hon. Rotimi Agunsoye of the House of Representatives, gave us some fire fighting equipment.

“When the second incident occurred, we tried using the equipment but it didn’t quench the fire.

“I also installed the equipment in all these shops that got burnt because I was told that the equipment will burst and stop the fire when a fire begins but I was surprised that it did not work today,” he said.

Fayemi said the fire services did not arrive at the scene till about 2.30am which was an hour after the first call was made to alert them about the blaze.

“When they came, their water was not enough I had to tell them to send more water tankers here because the fire was much more than we expected.

“Two fire trucks are here from LASEMA, the fire fighters had to go to Ogba to get more water, I wonder why the water channels created by Lagos State Government don’t work,” he said.

Mrs Olabisi Salami, a trader who sells frozen meat and fish in the market tearfully lamented about her financial losses.

She said “I was called at 2 a.m. that the market was on fire, when I got here I realised everywhere has been totally burnt.

“I have no insurance. When the first incident occurred, the local government rebuilt the affected stalls.

“I had just used a loan to purchase a lot of fresh frozen produce on Tuesday in preparation for the Easter holiday and now this happened on Friday.

“I have lost five deep freezers and goods worth N1.6million to this fire, Nigerians should help me, I don’t know what to do, this is the second time this is happening to me,”Salami lamented.

Another trader, Mrs Toyin Shodara, also talked about her losses in the fire incident.

“I sell drinks and snacks, I got to know about the fire incident about 3a.m this morning. I have a month old baby, so I could not come immediately I heard the news. It was my husband that came.

“The fire wasn’t a lot on my own side of the market, I was able to salvage a few things, though it affected my freezer, plastic drinks and my crates of minerals.

“I have no insurance, I don’t know how I will recover from this. Everything is in the hands of God,” she said.

Other traders who were badly affected by the fire declined interviews with our correspondent because they were too distraught to speak.

Mr Kehinde Adebayo, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of LASEMA, in a phone interview told our correspondent that he could not comment on the alleged one hour lateness of the fire services and insufficient water in the fire trucks.

“I cannot comment on that. Only the Managing Director (MD) can comment on that. What I can do is to issue an official press statement. All I can say before the statement is issued is that there was sufficient water for the fire trucks,” he said.

Mr Afolabi Sofola, the Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area in a phone interview with NAN talked about efforts to stop the fire and the Local Government’s recovery plans for the traders affected by the fire at the Binukonu Market.

Afolabi said: “I was woken up at around 3.30am and I was told that the market was on fire and immediately I told the fire brigade to go there.

“I wanted to leave home at that time to go there but we are very much aware that the Inspector General of Police have recalled all our security details and we have to be careful these days about security.

“I’m presently on my way there, but the information available at my disposal is that the incessant power outage could have caused the fire outbreak, we will get a report before the afternoon.

“In my first tenure as Chairman, I had urged the traders to do insurance and none of them was particularly keen.

“We are sensitising them on the importance of insurance, because it is important in all walks of life, even the staff of my local government are currently in the process of being insured.

“We will have a meeting and put heads together, see the extent of the damage and how we can rally around them to assist them and collaborate with other agencies to see how we can be of assistance. This is very unfortunate.

“We have to sensitise our people on the fact that we should not leave our appliances on. Switching them off will prevent a fire outbreak,” the local government Chairman said.
