Mohammed commended Nigerians for their perseverance and understanding and urged them to continue to support the government.

The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Abdulwaheed Odushile, told newsmen that the Federal Government needed to focus more on the economy, particularly in the area of job creation.

“Government needs to improve the economy by creating jobs directly. “It should create rooms so that people in the non- formal sector can also create jobs, especially in agriculture, tourism and other areas where they can show their skills.

Earlier, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said that the programme was the governor’s initiative to usher in the Yuletide season.

Tandoh, a former Secretary of the Local Organising Committee for the 2012 National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, expressed delight at the turn out of spectators at the continental soccer tournament holding at the EKO Atlantic City, Victoria Island.
He noted that as the competition progresses, the spectator stands will be filled to capacity. “We have been having the stands filled up since the kick-off the tournament on Tuesday despite that fact that, they are working days. More importantly, I am happy CAF officials are impressed with the facilities, logistics and other things we have put in place for the success of the competition. I am sure that gradually everything will fall into place. I look forward to better things ahead as we progress in the tournament.
“We also have a tourism package for the players and officials on Friday, a match free day, where they would be taken on a bus tours and boat cruise across Lagos.”
Tandoh, noted that aside from any other thing, the security at the venue has been quite impressive, so also the medical committee, the ceremonial and volunteers have been very good. In terms of the logistics, I think we have done very well and we are going to sustain this.
He stressed that, to give the event a boost in the area of entertainment, CAF has instructed for a fusion of the Lagos entertainment group which presented the Eyo masquerade dance and others with the official cheer leaders from the Bahamas. • Partial use of Lagos/Badagry expressway project by 2017 — CCECC

Partial use of Lagos/Badagry expressway project by 2017 — CCECC

The completed sections of the Lagos/Badagry Expressway project would be opened to motorists in the first quarter of 2017, to ease traffic congestion on the road, a top official of the CCECC, contractors handling the project, said in Lagos on Sunday.

The China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) official, who craved anonymity, told journalists that Phases 1 and 2 of the road project, which cover between the Iganmu Interchange and the Trade Fair, would be completed by 2017.

He added that the Third Phase of the project, which covers between the Trade Fair and Okokomaiko, is, however, scheduled for completion by 2019.

“The present reconstruction and expansion of the road will terminate at Afromedia, near Okokomaiko.

“The First Phase covers from the Iganmu Interchange to the FESTAC Town Second Gate at Agboju, while the Second Phase, between Agboju and the Trade Fair, will be ready for use by early 2017.

“But we are determined to conclude the entire project by 2019,’’ he said.

The official, however, said that certain challenges had delayed the project in the past.

“We have been having challenges on the road project and that has resulted to some delay in our work.

“We had to stop work for three years, from 2013 to this year, to allow NNPC to be able to relocate their pipelines buried between Alakija and Abule-Ado.

“They finally completed the relocation of those pipelines in October, and you can see for yourself that serious work is going on there now,’’ he said.

He said that the Third Phase of the project was also experiencing delays at the Military Cantonment in Ojo.

The CCECC official, however, assured that the Lagos State Government was collaborating with the Federal Government and the military authorities to resolve the challenge.

“The issue is that at the military barracks at Ojo, part of the fence has to give way for the road expansion project, but we cannot do that immediately due to the sensitive nature of their work.

“The Lagos State Government is, however, engaging them to see the best way we can achieve our aim, without compromising security,” he said.

The company official also said that their engineers were designing an overhead bridge on the road at Alakija, to permanently solve perennial gridlock around the Third Gate of FESTAC Town.

“As you know, that area is a high-traffic area.

“We will construct an overhead bridge over the FESTAC Town Third Gate so that motorists going towards Badagry can use the bridge, while those coming from FESTAC Town to Mile 2 can turn under the bridge.

“This will go a long way to ease the traffic situation there,” he said.

Serious construction work is ongoing on various aspects of the road at the moment.

The construction work has, however, worsened the traffic situation on the road, with some motorists calling on the contractors to create alternative routes, to ease the situation.

A motorist, Mr Saka Ajayi, however, commended the contractors for accelerating the pace of work.

“Each time I ply this road and see the progress being made in its reconstruction, I’m always happy.

“I can only urge the construction company handling the project to maintain the pace so that we, the motorists, can always have easy passage,’’ he said.

Mrs Bose Ahmed, a regular motorist on the road, however, advised the contractors to create alternative routes for the ease of road users.

“We thank God that the job is progressing fast, but the contractors should create an alternative route between Barracks and Volkswagen so that road users can have some relief,” she said.

Another road user, Mr Isaac Ola, commended the Lagos State Government for the reconstruction work.

“We are happy that the contractors are working, but although it is painful now when the job is eventually concluded, Lagosians will be happier for it,’’ he added.

“We are already engaging the Terra Kulture and we are speaking to another consultant and the truth is that we want to have the theatres in Badagry, Epe, Ikorodu, Alimosho and on the Mainland. We already have one in Victoria Island. But the truth is that this is where the energy of Lagos is and that is where we should go.

“It’s not so much about physical infrastructure, but 67 per cent of the Lagos population is below the age of 35, so we need to start finding things to keep the younger ones more creative and then open the space for them to be able to just show their talents.”

Governor Ambode also said that the State Government was fine-tuning plans ahead of the climax of its Lagos @ 50 celebrations coming up on May 27, 2017, adding that several events that would promote the arts and entertainment sector would be incorporated in the celebration.

“Something like that should be replicated in Lagos state too so that as soon as a tourist gets there, he or she will be able to understand the culture of the people he wants to mingle with.

“There, in Gegu village, South Korea, the cuisine, craft, dressing, belief of the people are showcased,’’ he said.

  • Lagos to launch rent-to-own housing scheme December 8

Lagos to launch rent-to-own housing scheme December 8

…Says Scheme targets low income earners, artisans

In an effort to cushion the effects of economic recession in the country, the Lagos State Government on Thursday said it has concluded plans to start allocation of houses under the newly introduced rent-to-own policy.

The State’s Commissioner for Housing, Prince Gbolahan Lawal, who disclosed this at a press conference ahead of the launch of the schemes at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, said the Rent-To-Own and Rental Housing Policies of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration is aimed at making housing more readily affordable and accessible for Lagosians.

According to him, the schemes listed for the programme include Sir Michael Otedola Estate, Odoragunshin-Epe; CHOIS City, Agbowa; Alhaji Adetoun Mustapha Estate, Ojokoro and Oba Adeboruwa Estate, Igbogbo-Ikorodu, adding that it will be launched simultaneously on Thursday, December 8, 2016.

Lawal said accessing housing units in the state has been largely on cash and carry basis which ends up excluding majority of the citizenry until when recently the Mortgage Scheme was introduced.

“Even though the Mortgage Scheme was able to accommodate more people on the home ownership ladder, a large number can still not afford to become home owners as they are unable to meet the requirement of 30 per cent equity contribution which the mortgage scheme demands”, he said.

He said Government has always been challenged by the arduous task of providing affordable and decent accommodation for the people of the state in view of its ever growing population which reflected in the various housing schemes developed by different administrations over the years.

He emphasized that shelter is one of the basic needs of man, saying that is why governments all over the world accord top priority to the provision of housing for their citizens.

Lawal said inadequate housing is responsible for so many health and social ills in the society, adding that, “The Rent-to-own policy targets the low and medium income earners in both the formal and informal sectors. Under this arrangement, individuals are required to pay 5 per cent of the value of the housing unit as commitment fee and the balance is spread over 10 years. The programme allows the tenant to live on the property while paying towards ownership as a fixed rent within the period of ten years.

“The Lagos state rental housing policy is to further ensure housing accessibility and affordability in Lagos state. The rent for the rental housing will be collected on a monthly basis. The tenants are however required to pay one month deposit.”

On the criteria for interested applicants, Lawal said they must be primarily resident in Lagos State and will be required  to submit a copy of their Lagos State Residents Registration (LASSRA) Card and must be a first time home buyer, which must be 21 years old and above.

He also said that applicants must be tax compliant and provide the proof of tax payment and must have capacity to pay the 5 per cent commitment fee.

He explained that the rent to be paid will be determined by the prevailing rent in each of the locations while mode of payment will be direct debit by the employer/banker to ensure easy collection, just as he stressed that the rented accommodation is not transferable.

This scheme is targeted at the working class and people with regular source of income who may not want to participate in the rent-to-own or mortgage program. “Government intends to earmark 20 per cent of the available housing units in each of the dedicated rent-to-own estates for rental housing.”

  • Breaking News: Lagos cancels monthly environmental sanitation day

Breaking News: Lagos cancels monthly environmental sanitation day

…Urges residents to comply with environmental laws

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday terminated the monthly environmental sanitation exercise which hitherto held for three hours on the last Saturday of every month.

The State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the decision to cancel the monthly exercise followed a resolution arrived at Wednesday’s Executive Council meeting which approved the need for a robust review of the environmental laws and procedures in the state in order to meet the present day challenges and to promote a clean and healthy environment.

The Government noted that considering the present economic situation in the country, it was no longer appropriate to restrict movement of people for three hours in a mega city like Lagos at a time they should be pursuing commercial and entrepreneurial activities.

According to government, in the last two decades, Lagos has grown exponentially into a mega city with the attendant huge environmental problems associated with managing a population of over twenty million people.

But sadly, the environmental laws, policies and procedures being practiced in the State have not been able to match the phenomenal growth and the dream of a 24-hour economy, hence the need for the reform.

Ayorinde said the State Government was not unaware of a recent Court of Appeal judgment.

According to him, the thrust of the fresh initiatives, among others, is to promote holistic and modern solutions to the unique environmental challenges confronting the State, while encouraging citizens to voluntarily partner with government to achieve the desired goals.

The Statement said: “After a careful consideration, the State Executive Council has therefore resolved that the present economic climate can no longer support the continued lock down of a mega city like Lagos, when the citizens should be free to engage in commercial and entrepreneurial activities that can promote economic growth and prosperity.

“Furthermore, Government will also accelerate the introduction of fresh reforms through the passage of the new harmonized environmental laws that will drive meaningful changes in areas of harmonized billing, waste management, modern Landfill sites, noise pollution, introduction of an Environmental Trust Fund and an Environmental Advisory Council.

“The Government wishes to reiterate its strong commitment to a clean and secure environment for the benefit of its citizens, and will continue to provide the necessary leadership to meet the environmental challenges of a mega city like Lagos. Lagosians and visitors alike are therefore urged to embrace these changes and imbibe a culture of voluntarily maintaining and preserving their environment to create a beautiful and healthy city that we all can be proud of.”

The statement added that the State Government would henceforth be tougher in ensuring expeditious enforcement against contraventions of its policies and regulations and as such, residents should voluntarily comply with the necessary laws and support government in its bid to have a clean and healthy environment.
