Lagos clears shanties at Okunde bluewater Scheme

Lagos State government has intensified its enforcement at the Okunde Bluewater Scheme in Lekki, dislodging squatters and dismantling a network of makeshift structures allegedly linked to criminal activities.

The operation, spearheaded by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development and led by Commissioner, Ekundayo Alebiosu, marked a follow-up carried out late last year.

Authorities said the area had once again become a hotbed for illicit activities, prompting urgent intervention.

“This is not just about illegal structures; this is about public safety. Dangerous weapons and firearms were recovered today, and arrests were made.

“These structures posed serious security and environmental risks, and allowing them to remain would have been a disservice to the law-abiding residents of Lagos,” Alebiosu said.

According to the ministry, the cleared structures had reemerged in recent months, serving as hideouts for individuals involved in robbery, drug peddling, and other anti-social behaviors.

Officials expressed concern that the return of these shanties undermined the state’s efforts to reclaim and secure its coastal corridors.

Lagos reaffirms commitment to clean, livable city amid viral claims

The Lagos State Government has firmly rejected viral claims that the state is “smelling,” asserting that Lagos is undergoing a transformative environmental evolution.

In a statement on Sunday, the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised the government’s commitment to sustainability, highlighting ongoing efforts to implement innovative policies that strengthen waste management, enhance sanitation, and reinforce urban resilience.

The Commissioner affirmed that Lagos is not deteriorating but evolving into a megacity with modern waste management systems.

“Lagos is not ‘smelling’; it is evolving toward sustainable waste processing, modernized landfill management, cleaner waterways, and structured sanitation systems. The present administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains steadfast in its commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable city through strategic environmental initiatives,” he said.

He stressed that addressing waste and sanitation challenges in a rapidly growing megacity requires structured solutions rather than sensational claims.

Wahab highlighted that the government has implemented various measures, including the installation of over 50 air quality monitors to track emissions from industrial, transport, and household sources.

According to him, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has expanded waste collection services to hard-to-reach communities. In collaboration with Ibeju Lekki Local Government, tricycle compactors have been introduced for waste collection on a pay-as-you-go model in areas with non-motorable roads.

He revealed that this initiative will be scaled up with the deployment of 500 tricycle compactors later this year.

He further stated that within 18 months, the state will close the Olusosun and Solous 3 landfills, replacing them with modern Transfer Loading Stations where waste will be sorted, compacted, and redirected to recycling facilities.

Wahab also noted that Lagos is advancing its Waste-to-Energy project in Epe, which will process 2,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and generate 60–80 megawatts of electricity for the power grid.

He reiterated that the administration has also taken steps to reduce plastic pollution by banning styrofoam food packs and phasing out single-use plastics, and the government is promoting sustainable alternatives and enforcing extended producer responsibility among manufacturers.

He disclosed that multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed with international partners to support waste-to-resource initiatives.

The Commissioner pointed out that in the past two years, industrial effluent discharge into Lagos waterways has reduced by 25%, a development attributed to stringent regulations by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).

He stated that the government is implementing bio-remediation techniques to enhance surface water quality and deploying Modular Septage Pre-Treatment Plants (MSPP) to ensure efficient fecal sludge treatment.

To further enhance sanitation, Wahab also said the government has deployed 15,000 street sweepers across highways, inner roads, and markets, alongside stricter enforcement of environmental laws.

“Efforts to address open defecation include continuous sensitisation campaigns and the construction of 150 new public toilets, with another 250 to be built through public-private partnerships,”

He added that local governments are also collaborating to maintain the state’s 1,710 existing public toilets in parks, markets, and residential areas.

“In an effort to make Lagos greener and healthier, the State Parks and Garden Agency has launched the “Trees for Lagos” campaign, aiming to plant 50,000 trees within two years at strategic locations, including highways, railway routes, industrial areas, schools, and hospitals.”

Wahab reaffirmed that with these initiatives, the Lagos State Government remains unwavering in its resolve to maintain environmental sustainability and ensure a livable, evolving megacity.

Lagos suspends Red Line operations indefinitely

Lagos State Government may have suspended operations on its Red Line Mass Transit Train Service (LRMT) until further notice.

Checks by our correspondent indicated that the operations of the train service ran into troubled waters last week. Many passengers observed mechanical failure on the morning belt of the train service last Monday.

A passenger, who preferred anonymity that boarded the train from Iju, said they had been told the train had developed a mechanical fault and when they got to Mushin, all passengers were instructed to disembark, as the train could no longer move.

Another passenger, Emmanuel Ajadi, said he was turned back at Agege Train Station last Tuesday by station workers, who said the train was not in operation.

Same day, operators of the Red Line had in a terse chat posted on the LRMT WhatsApp  channel created same day, indicated that the break would affect only the morning belt, saying the afternoon belt would still run.

On the Whatsapp Channel, which was deleted by the operator last Friday, it was stated: “Please note that only the 5:20pm and 6:50pm train from Oyingbo and 6:40pm train from Agbado will run today.” Checks revealed that both services pledged for that evening never ran.

By 9:19pm same Tuesday, the operator confirmed it wasn’t able to operate as promised when it sent the chat: “We sincerely apologise for the cancellation of service this evening, which was due to mechanical faults. Kindly note that the train will not be operating tomorrow, and until further notice. We deeply regret this situation.”

The Red Line began commercial operation on October 15, eight months after it was inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 29.

The service took off with two services at the morning and two at evening peaks, culminating in four shuttles per day, which it intends to upscale as operations improve on the corridor, which is projected to be a major cash cow with the huge population of passengers transiting from Agbado to Oyingbo.

Checks indicated that the train service had until the suspension of operation due to mechanical failure been running at below optimal carriage capacity, as many have complained about the high cost of trips, put end-to-end at N1500 per trip (from Oyingbo-Agbado or from Agbado-Oyingbo), while the narrow gauge train operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation on the same corridor for the same trip costs N750.

The Red Line, which started commercial operation on its 27km first phase, was operated by First Metro, under the guide of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The service is projected to carrying about 500,000 passenger daily and about 1.5 million daily at the completion of the second phase, which will see the service terminate at Onikan, from where it will join the state’s premier mass transit, the Lagos Blue Line.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had while launching its operation assured Lagosians of timely service on the train, as travel time would be reduced to between 30 to 45 minutes end-to-end.

He said the 25 per cent rebate regime on public transportation announced by the government would also be observed on the train.

Attempts to get reactions from LAMATA by our correspondent have been unsuccessful, as calls or WhatsApp chats to their phone numbers were not responded to.
