    Safety commission shuts construction site

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) has sealed off Monterosa Construction site in Lagos, following a crane accident that occurred at 7:30 am yesterday.

    Investigations by officials showed the crane operator, Rotimi Adesina, sustained injuries. He was taken to hospital where he died.

    Project Manager, Hein Coerzer and Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, were engaged by LSSC for documentation concerning the crane operations. They said relevant documents were kept at the company’s head office.

    The company has been instructed to submit documentation regarding the crane and the project for a review.

    LSSC’s Director General, Lanre Mojola, directed the sealing off and issued an abatement notice to safeguard the lives of workers on site.

    “Safety of lives is paramount,” he said, adding: “Under no circumstances should safety be compromised.”

    He assured the public that updates would be provided as investigation continued.

    The DG condoled with the bereaved family. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to preventing recurrence through enforcement of safety regulations.

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) at the weekend held its annual workers’ retreat with the

    theme: ‘Repositioning Safety Commission as a fully Regulatory Agency Following the Establishment of Occupational Safety Officers’ Cadre.’

    The event, attended by dignitaries, heads of departments and guests, focused on how to reposition the commission to a fully regulated agency, ‘’especially now that it has established its occupational safety officers’ cadre.’’

    Welcoming stakeholders and guests, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Agency, Mr Sesan Ogundeko and the Director General, LSSC, Mr Lanre Mojola, expressed gratitude for their support, sense of dedication and due diligence.

    Mojola thanked the participants, who also doubled as the management team and head of departments of units in the agency, saying they should, however, not rest on their oars, but strive to raise the standard of the agency.

    He hailed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for always prioritising the safety of the state, saying ‘’this is the more reason the agency as an ambassador of safety should think outside the box and not rest on its oars by taking safety of the state to a higher level.

    Let’s move from where we were last year to a new sphere.”

    Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr Sesan Ogundeko, said LSSC was an agency with exceptional performance and as such was recognised by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

    The Executive Director, Safety Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation, Jamiu Badmos, an engineer, said the need for the establishment of the commission was borne out of a dream to build a society that valued lives through change in unsafe behaviour and attitude that would increase life expectancy, national productivity and ultimately improve the quality of life through reduced accidents, injuries, illnesses and diseases.

    Lagos agencies intensify no-smoking campaign

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) have launched an advocacy campaign to enforce ban on smoking in public spaces.

    LSSC Director-General Mr. Lanre Mojola emphasised the health risks of indoor smoking, including lung cancer and respiratory diseases, and highlighted the dangers of second hand smoking in shared spaces such as lounges and bars.

    He said: “Our goal is to create a safe, smoke-free environment for all”, referencing Lagos State Anti-Smoking Law of 2014, which mandates designated smoking areas not more than 10 per cent of the physical space for hotels, lounges, bars and nightclubs and prohibits smoking in public spaces such as schools, gyms, restaurants, cinemas etc.

    With the festive season approaching, Mojola urged compliance, stressing collaboration with business owners to ensure a healthy nightlife experience.

    ‘’While enforcement will follow, the focus is on education and awareness through campaigns and stakeholders’ engagement.’’

    LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, reiterated the importance of compliance, advising business owners to install smoke detectors, display clear smoking area signs and adhere to laws prohibiting smoking near children or selling cigarettes to minors.

    Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) hassaid it will work with artisans, technicians and stakeholders to put safety in place and prevent accident.

    It said it would ensure everyone was safe at home and in work places.

    Director General, Lanre Mojola, spoke at the opening of 2024 Nigerian Artisans & Technicians Conference (NATCO), with the theme: ‘Innovation! Innovation! Innovation! Key to sustainability in economic reality’.
