  • Lagos partners Germany in knowledge transfer

Lagos State Government has entered into an agreement with technocrats from Germany on knowledge transfer for occupational safety and health.

The aim is to improve on the knowledge of safety advocacy programmes and transfer knowledge to millions of Nigerians.

Speaking at the weekend in Alausa, Ikeja, while unveiling the idea behind the partnership, Lagos State Safety Commission Director-General/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Hakeem Dickson expressed the commitment of the government to the safety of lives and property, hence the idea behind the improvement of the knowledge transfer for occupational safety and health.

He said this would afford people the opportunity of safeguarding themselves in the event of emergencies, occurrences and unfortunate incidents.

Dickson said the agency, in conjunction with the Safety Advocacy Empowerment Foundation (SAEF), met technocrats led by Dr. Christian Bechmann and Steven Timn from Germany, to improve on the knowledge of safety advocacy programmes.

“The idea is to increase our methodology in the area of presentation because different methods will be used. Even those in secondary schools and undergraduates, by the time we train them in safety, it will enhance their employability,” he added.

The director-general said the technocrats would start by training 50 people.

He noted: “But only six of the number will end up studying in Germany before they return to the country to train about 23,000 people drawn across all sections of the nation, otherwise called train the trainers. This has been approved by the European Commission.”

Head of Service Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola hailed SAEF on its proactive measures in getting the project on track. He said the training would prevent occupational hazards.

SAEF President Dapo Omolade praised the commission for its commitment to the safety of everybody by supporting the activities and programmes that would promote safety, especially the knowledge transfer for Occupational Safety and Health programme (OSH) in Nigeria.

  • Osinbajo calls for self-sacrifice, righteousness to transform Nigeria

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called for self-sacrifice, righteousness to transform Nigeria.

He spoke at the weekend during the 50th-anniversary lecture, award and dinner of the Shepherd Hill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos State, with then theme: The Role of Contemporary Church in Nation-Building: Pessimism, Optimism or Activism.

The church’s 50th anniversary began about two months ago with several activities and ended yesterday with the anniversary thanksgiving celebration.

According to Osinbajo, Christians must not sit at home and pray but must be involved to make the difference.

“There is a test of courage and faith that every nation-builder must face and we must be ready to be the salt of the earth, like Jesus Christ said,” he said.

Osinbajo said righteousness is what exalts a nation, maintaining that nation-building would also need the power of faith.

He added: “Righteousness exalts a nation. Our nation needs righteousness because without righteousness our nation cannot be exalted, we cannot build a nation without righteousness.

“Nation-building mandate can only be fulfilled by the overcoming power of faith in God and in His enduring word. Such faith is an active faith; faith that interfaces with its environment, forcefully advancing against the gate of hell and deploying appropriate strategies from activism to policy propositions and from advocacy to active policy and governance and upward.

“We must put our faith to work and we must be the salt of the earth like Jesus Christ. As a Christian we do not agree with our flesh; we must be righteous and ensure self-sacrifice, if we will transform our country. People will speak evil of us, but we must stand for righteousness.”

Osinbajo thanked God for what He is doing in the church in the past 50 years.

“I pray He does more and all of us will be here in another 50 years,” he said.

The Chairman of the occasion and a former Nigerian Ambassador to Great Britain, Dr Christopher Kolade, noted that the church is relevant in nation-building.

He noted that how well the church responds to the changing needs in the society will be relevant in its contribution to transform the nation.

The guest lecturer and Senior Pastor of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, averred that it is the responsibility of the church to build individuals who will go out to build the nation.

The cleric decried the various economic problems in the country, saying there is a need for the church to influence all sectors of the economy.

Senior Pastor of Shepherd Hill Baptist Church, Rev Israel Kristilere, said the church had not done well in building the nation.

He said: “In building the nation, we, Christians, must be actively involved. Celebrating our 50 years makes us reflect on how we have been able to contribute to the growth of the nation by building godly men and women who are making influence in the nation.

“By the next 50 years, we aim to make more impact. That is why we are focusing on the theme.”

He said the church was founded on July 13, 1969.

“We are glad that it has pleased God to spare the church through the turbulence that might have happened over the years to celebrate 50 years,” he said.

  • Revealed: Kaduna politician behind Tinubu 2023 items

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Thursday disowned a “faceless group” pushing his alleged 2023 ambition.

The group of “mischief makers” has packaged campaign souvenirs, such as T shirts, fez caps and leaflets to embarrass the former Lagos State governor. The items have been traced to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, The Nation learnt last night.

Sources confirmed that the materials were prepared and embossed with Tinubu’s name in Dubai to cause disaffection in the ruling party.

Although the souvenirs were credited to an unknown group christened “Asiwaju Reloaded Ambassadors”, the sources said they were bankrolled by a Kaduna politician.

Pictures of the souvenirs had surfaced on the social media on Tuesday and went viral.

But, the Tinubu Media Office distanced the APC stalwart from the souvenirs, describing them as the handiwork of mischief-makers.

According to the sources, the materials were sent out to create a schism between President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu, with a view to truncating whatever ambition the APC leader may have in 2023.

Tinubu has been a major ally and supporter of President Buhari in the task of building a better Nigeria.

Many APC leaders have dismissed the alleged campaign materials as a grand design to blackmail Tinubu and create friction within the APC family.

A top government official, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, asked rhetorically: “How can Tinubu, who has been working hand in hand with President Buhari to engender stability in the country, ensure stability of the National Assembly with the emergence of a united leadership and the revitalisation of the economy, be working at the same time on 2023 presidency when President Buhari has just been re-elected for a second term and the new government is yet to take off?

“Didn’t that stand logic on its head? Those who know the dynamics of politics know so well that Asiwaju Tinubu is too politically savvy to engage in such.”

Tinubu distanced himself from the souvenirs and their alleged sponsors.

His Media Office, in a terse two-paragraph statement signed by Tunde Rahman, said: “We have seen pictures of fez caps, T shirts, shirts and even leaflets with Bola Tinubu 2023 embossed on them purportedly by a faceless group which christened itself ‘Asiwaju Reloaded Ambassadors Nigeria’.

“Neither the group nor its souvenirs are known to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“We hereby, through this medium, categorically deny any knowledge of the group and dissociate Asiwaju Tinubu from the group’s unsolicited and unwarranted materials.”

  • ‘How we survived Ijegun fire’

    • Residents of Lagos community recall night of horror

    • How fire started

    • Another victim dies

Landlords and old residents of Ijegun community, a Lagos suburb in Alimosho council area of the state, will not forget Thursday in a hurry. It was the day tragedy visited them and gave them a kiss of sorrow and death. Fire came and lapped up houses, shops, vehicles and sent souls to the graves. The day would be ingrained in their memory for a long time particularly because that was not the first time they would be playing host to such an incident. About 11 years ago, precisely May 15, 2008, residents were forced to relive the horror once again. Incidentally, the fire incidents all happened at the same spot-Fire Junction.  Like the incident of 2008, it came at a huge cost also: houses were burnt, 31 vehicles were destroyed and about 21 persons injured and two confirmed dead initially. By press time, another victim gave up the ghost.

Unlike in 2008 when the inferno was caused by a road construction tractor that ruptured an oil pipeline, this time, the inferno was a deliberate sabotage by pipeline vandals. According the residents, the suspected vandals came deep in the night, ruptured the oil pipeline that comes from Atlas Cove passing through Ijedodo before getting to Ijegun.  The petroleum thieves, according Ijegun residents, operated from night till early morning.  Some said they came with between eight to 10 tankers.

Although there was noise in the early morning while the activities of the oil vandals were on, many of the residents were initially not aware of what was going on in the neighourhood.  However, towards the early morning, Ijegun was saturated by thick smell of petroleum.

One Mr. Ebenezer, a business man on Ayinde Street, said he was woken up by a phone call from a neigbour.  “I learnt that these people were around siphoning fuel from the pipeline; that the whole area was saturated with the smell of petroleum. They told me, ‘There might be fire at any time. Please leave your house immediately. Do so as quickly as possible.”  Ebenezer said he immediately woke up his family and told everybody to leave the house, that there might be fire. He continued: “I woke up all my family members and told them to go outside. Some didn’t understand what I was explaining to them, but the most important thing was that they left. I told them not to carry anything. Life is more important than any material acquisition. We quickly rushed out. When I checked my phone, the call came in at exactly 5:07am that Thursday morning. In less than three minutes, we were already out of the house.  We were outside when we started seeing palls of fire and smoke. The fire started at 5:10am, three minutes after I got the call. There was pandemonium everywhere with black smoke, huge palls of fire running across the canal that crossed Awolumate Street.

Mr. Kamale Karim has a house facing the canal. He lives with his family and narrated their narrow escape. “This thing started 5:10 am. I woke up early this morning and was going through my phone when I heard a bang. I looked outside; there was huge fire. I called my  children. Because the canal was directly in front of us and the fire was burning inside, I told everybody to go outside through the kitchen. I told them to run to the next street through the kitchen.

“Later, when my family had escaped, I moved towards where l saw the fire coming from. I saw two people that were burnt.

“The fuel came through the gutter; it seemed the suspected vandals opened the pipeline and could not close it again and then the fuel flowed down to the carnal. “

Godswill, 20, is another survivor of the inferno. His compound is also facing the canal. He narrated his close shave with death:  “I slept very late. I didn’t hear what was happening.  I woke up early in the morning and discovered that smoke had filled the room. I was a bit confused and didn’t know what I was doing. I tried opening the front door only to discover that it was locked and l couldn’t open it. I also tried the back door but I also found it difficult to open it. Faced with death, I needed do something desperate to stay alive. I pulled off the burglary proof and removed the glass louvres on the window of my compound. I escaped through the window. That was how I survived the inferno.

How two residents lost their lives

According to the residents, the fire might have started from the Awolumate Street almost 50 meters from where the vandals had operated and from where fuel was licking. It was from there that fuel  found its way to the densely populated sloppy area of Catholic Mission Street, Church Street and other streets.

It was learnt that the fire might have started from a Volkswagen Vanagon bus. The driver, one Baba Friday, also known as Jafan, was said to be anxious to get to his vehicle, the Vanagon bus packed in the area. He was afraid that if there was fire  as a result of the smell of fuel that had enveloped the whole community, it might burn his bus. A certain Sukunmi was said to have warned him against starting the bus with the community enveloped with fuel odour. Jafan did not listen to the advice and immediately he revved the engine of the vehicle, it was engulfed in flame and also caught his shirt. They said Jafan  rushed to the canal to douse himself inside, not knowing that there was petrol there. He soaked himself with petrol and the fire engulfed his whole body. Meanwhile, through the canal, the flame traced its way back to the point where the petroleum thieves had siphoned fuel and the pipe burst into flame.

One of the security guards in the area, Mallam Bashir, saw Baba in the canal engulfed by fire and writhing with pains. Thinking it was ordinary water that was in the canal, he also jumped in to rescue  Baba but he was  caught by fire. He was also burnt to death.

As at Friday, another resident of the community who sustained burns as a result of the fire, one Ribwan Afolabi, living on Catholic Mission Street, off Awolumate Street, also died on Friday at the hospital. He was buried on Thursday evening.

We tried to reach the traditional ruler of Ijegun, Oba Nureni Akinremi  Olomi Tutu, whose palace is less than100 meters from the point where the vandals damaged the pipeline to scoop fuel. His palace was locked except for the front door man by a security guard. Upon inquiry, the guard said the Oba did not want to see anybody.

  • Group holds skills seminar for youths

TO tackle unemployment, the Ladies of St Mulumba, VGC Sub-Council, Lekki II, Lagos State has organised a seminar for  youths in various parishes under the sub council.

Speaking at the event with the theme: “The hiring process: Things you should know”, the sub-council President, Lady Nnenne Ukairo, said it was focused on hiring processes, such as tips to write good curriculum vitae (CV) and tips for successful interview.

“The key focus of the seminar is that we actually want to assist the youth (graduates and the unemployed), who have been shut out of the hiring process due to poorly-presented curriculum vitae. We are aware that in Nigeria, there are many qualified youths seeking for jobs, but are not well aware that your curriculum vitae is one of the very important steps in the employment process.

“You must have a well-written curriculum vitae expressing and defining you and your qualification before a recruiting company or Employer can move to the next step of inviting you for an interview,” she said.

She explained that after the seminar, the youth would be better positioned to write good CV that would earn them interview invitations, and ultimately jobs.

According to Lady Ukairo, the knighthood embarks on charity initiatives, such as visiting the hospitals, prisons, adding that this seminar is one of the charity of the knighthood “and I think at this time in Nigeria, it is very necessary to educate and assist the youths on the subject with the view to positioning them for employment”.

She continued: “This is one of our charity activities. The next charity activity might not focus on this, it might focus on another initiative. For the youths of Nigeria, we have had a lot of programmes ranging from pro-life, to instill morality and the sanctity of life. We have also had skills acquisition programmes in other parts of the country.

“Next empowerment programme for our sub-council will be a follow-up on this training and another area of need, entrepreneurship. Today, we are focusing on academics for those who wish to secure paid employment having successfully acquired educational qualifications”

The Vice-President,  Mrs. Theresa Chiejina, noted that the seminar provided an opportunity for members of the knighthood to contribute their time and talent to youth development in the country.

  • Ogunlewe, son get APC membership cards

The Lagos State Chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) said it had issued membership cards to a former Minister of Works, Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe and his son, Moyosore.

The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ikeja that both were issued cards earlier in the day.

Ogunlewe recently announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC over what he called instability in his former party.

His son, Moyosore who was the PDP candidate for Kosofe 1, state house assembly seat in the 2019 elections but lost to APC, had earlier defected to the ruling party.

Salami said the issuance of cards to both defectors at the ACME Road party secretariat meant they were now registered members of the party.

He congratulated Ogunlewe and his lawyer son for joining the ”real party”, urging them to feel at home in the party of progressives.

”Yes, a former of Minister of Works, Sen. Ogunlewe and his son have been issued APC membership cards.

Salami said the issuance of cards was done quietly at the office of the party chairman, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, and an elaborate defection ceremony would soon be organised to welcome the duo.

Moyosore, while speaking with NAN, also confirmed the issuance of the cards to them.

He said that they were well received by all the party executives led by Balogun.

”Yes, my dad and I were at the secretariat today where we registered and were issued cards of the APC at the party secretariat.

  • Five drivers arrested by Hamzat for traffic offences

LAGOS State Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat on Tuesday ordered the arrest of five drivers for driving against the traffic.

Four were apprehended on Lagos-Badagry Expressway; the last person was nabbed at Iponri.

Hamzat said their vehicles should be impounded, while the offenders should be made to face the wrath of the law for their actions.

The deputy governor was on his way to the flag-off ceremony of continuation of the reconstruction of Lagos-Badagry Expressway when he caught the drivers.

Hamzat expressed displeasure at the antics of the motorists, urging residents and road users to always obey the traffic laws.

He said: “It is important to note that on our way, we saw a lot of vehicles facing one way. In the process, we stopped some of them and their excuse was that `there is no road’.

“Unfortunately, on that same road, we saw a young man that was hit by an ‘Okada’ rider who was riding against the traffic. That young man can be somebody’s brother, son or cousin.

“So, we cannot say because the road is in bad shape, we will now break the law.’’

Fifty-four-year-old Emmanuel Onwuegbu, who was apprehended at Iponri told The Nation that he regretted the action.

According to him, the trucks and trailers blocked the road and he wanted to make a detour to follow another route.

The businessman said he was trapped in the traffic for about three hours at the same spot on Sunday.

“When I came out of Bode Thomas Road yesterday and faced Iponri. Trailers have blocked the two lanes. I decided to make a detour Under the Bridge. A car in my front followed a one-way by facing oncoming vehicles. Shortly after I followed him, a commercial tricycle driver blocked me while dropping his passengers. Not quite long, a motorcycle in the convoy of the deputy governor blocked me till the deputy governor arrived about two minutes later,” he said.

Onwuegbu said he would not have followed the vehicle but he was pressed to urinate.

He said he regretted his action.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) General Manager Olawale Musa said the apprehension of the traffic law violator by the deputy governor is to show the commitment, the determination of the current administration to eradicate all impunities and violations of law from Lagos State.

“This administration is committed to ensuring sanity on our roads so that we can have peace; people can travel within the time framework and also feel safe when driving on the road. All eyes are on traffic violators in Lagos State. It is no longer business as usual and anybody caught violating the law, will be made to appear before the appropriate court,” Musa said.

  •  Your welfare is our priority, Sanwo-Olu’s Chief of Staff tells workers

The Chief of Staff (COS) to the Lagos State governor, Tayo Ayinde, has said that the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu will deploy a feasible strategy to achieve its campaign promises to Lagosians, urging civil servants to brace up for the implementation tasks, which, he said, would be demanding.

Speaking on Thursday, during his maiden meeting with workers in the Governor’s Office, Ayinde said Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership remains focused on creating a state that will be safe for living and business, pointing out that the government would not shirk its responsibilities to the electorate.

He assured them of improved welfare, noting that it would only be enjoyed by those who work hard in their areas of duty.

He said: ”Improved productivity is vital to the success of this administration and I can assure you that we won’t joke with your welfare. We want you to increase your work output and show greater commitment to the task of delivering campaign promises of the Governor. We will reward hard work and compensate those who are committed to our objectives.”

Having worked with previous administrations, Ayinde said he knows the expectations and responsibilities of his office, which he described “as the engine room of the government.”

He advised civil servants to cooperate with the new leadership, stressing that the success of the administration would be dependent on seamless implementation of government’s policies by the workers.

Ayinde promised to strengthen capacity building programme for workers, noting that deserving employees would have opportunities to attend local and international training for improved performance and service delivery.

”We are going to send you on training and you should not see this as a favour. It is your right to be exposed to capacity building exercise in order to improve your performance and service delivery. If private firms train their workers, why can’t government do same?”

He said staff allowances would be reviewed, but pleaded with the workers to step up their performance and dedication to duty.
