Tinubu calls for special care for released Chibok schoolgirls

A former Lagos State Governor, Sen. Bola Tinubu, on Monday called for special and adequate care for the released Chibok schoolgirls, to help them overcome the sad experience they had to suffer while in captivity.

Tinubu made the call in a message in Lagos to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls

He urged the government to help the families of the girls to nurture them, for their proper reintegration into the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 82 of the over 200 girls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno by Boko Haram in April 2014 were released by the sect on Saturday following negotiations with the federal government.

The sect had earlier released 21 of the abducted girls in October 2016.

Tinubu said: “I congratulate President Buhari and Nigerians over the release of more of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

“This shows President Buhari’s unwavering commitment to freeing these and other innocent children from the cruel hand of Boko Haram and returning them to their families and community.

“Yet, we must keep this good news in proper context. The released children need to be nurtured and cared for in a special way in order to overcome the sad experience that they had to suffer.

“Moreover, we must not forget the girls still held by Boko Haram and we must not forget the grief of their families.

“We owe it to them to press forward until all the girls have regained freedom and Boko Haram is so defeated that it may never again be able to do what it did in Chibok.

“Boko Haram must be defeated. President Buhari has said as much.  We all must stand with him and support his strategy to accomplish this humane and necessary goal,” he said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader said the release of the girls showed that President Buhari had kept his eye on the true objective to reunite families and communities under the reign of peace and rule of justice.

According to him, the northern Nigeria, and Nigeria as a whole, may begin to rebuild in a way that brings a decent life and a taste of enduring prosperity to all Nigerians.

“This is the ultimate goal, and the release of these girls is an important step on this pathway.

“I congratulate the President. I congratulate our gallant armed forces.  After waiting so long for the return of their children, the parents of these girls must feel a great sense of relief and elation,” Tinubu said.

  • Surulere residents seek government intervention over blocked drains

Surulere residents seek government intervention over blocked drains

Residents of Surulere and its environs in Lagos on Friday urged the state government to open up the blocked drainage channels in the area, with the return of rainfall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a heavy downpour, which started a little after midnight, resulted in flooded roads and premises in parts of the area, causing hardship to affected residents.

Mrs Fatima Nnodu, a resident of Masha in Surulere Local Government Area of the state, told NAN that her home was flooded during the rain.

Nnodu lamented that she woke up in the middle of the night to find her home flooded during the downpour.

“I woke up in the middle of the night during the rainfall to discover that my house was already flooded, we all did not sleep.

“We had to keep awake till 3.00 a.m. when the rain subsided.

“ We beg those in authority, especially the Surulere Local Council, to embark on clearing and evacuation of silt from the drains.

“The drainage system is so poor in Surulere,” she said.

Mr Frank Eti, a resident of Lawanson in Ikate/Itire Local Council Development Area also said that his residence was affected by the flood, emanating from the midnight rainfall.

He said his neighbours were awake to watch over their properties while the rain lasted.

“The rainy season has started, and there are predictions that this year’s rain may be more.

“We appeal to the state government to clear the drains; we have not had it this bad.

“The flood was much; we could not sleep, to avoid our properties being swept away by the flood.

“We know our habits have also contributed to the menace; but we appeal to the government to start clearing the drains.

“Individually, we may not do it better,’’ Eti said.

An electrician, who simply identified himself as Odinaka, said his shop on Anjorin Street, Lawanson, was affected by the rain.

Odinaka, who resides in Ijeshatedo area of Itire/Ikate LCDA, said he had to device a means of evacuating the water from his shop after the downpour.

“The rain was also heavy in Ijesha where I stay and everywhere was flooded.

“As you can see, I am trying to get the flood out of the shop because it has affected some of my work tools and other appliances.

“Please, let the relevant authorities that we voted for, save us from the flood,” he said.

A check by the NAN correspondent indicated that the drainage channel on Akerele/Shitta, including the canal situated not far from the road, was filled with debris, causing slow movement of water.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, while reviewing activities of the ministry in the last two years on April 18, had assured residents that under the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI), primary, secondary and tertiary drains would be maintained all-year-round.

He said that this would be done to remove refuse, vegetal growth and silt from drains to allow free flow of storm water.

According to him, such action will be taken on zonal arrangement across the state.

NAN reports that NIMET, in its annual Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) for 2017 in Abuja, had said Nigeria would witness a year characterised by very heavy downpour.

According to the prediction, the rain may, however, not last very long, while a dry season that starts about October in most parts of the country, should also be expected this year.

“There will be an early cessation of rain in Nigeria this year, resulting in shorter than normal length of growing season for farmers,’’ the former NIMET Director-General, Dr Anthony Anuforom, said in the report.

  • Mamaye, LASG educate Amuwo-Odofin community on good maternal health

An NGO, Mamaye and the Lagos State Government on Friday said there was need for increased sensitisation on the importance of good maternal health and family planning (FP).

The two bodies made the assertion at the “Lagos State Community Sensitisation on Maternal, Newborn, Child Health (MNCH) Activities’’ at Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Council headquarters in FESTAC Town, Lagos State.

The World health organization (WHO) says maternal health is the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period.

Dr Saidat Okaga, representing the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Primary Healthcare, said the lack of understanding of good health for pregnant women had adverse effects on them and their children.

According to her, regular attendance to ante-natal clinics, strict adherence to instructions by healthcare attendants, exercise and good nutrition are important in observing good health during pregnancy.

She urged women to be aware of the danger signs in pregnancy and advised that prompt medical attention be sought once observed.

“There is need for women to be aware of the danger signs in pregnancy; it will help in the management of their condition and saving the lives of the mother and baby.

“Such signs include shortness of blood, severe abdominal pains, fever, excessive weakness, severe headache and blurred vision, reduced or no movement of baby, seizures and drainage of fluid from the vagina.

“Unusual swelling of feet, hands and face, any form of bleeding or spotting, lower abdominal pains before 37 weeks, excessive weight gain, shortness of breath, severe diarrhea and vomiting are also danger signs.

“Pregnant women, relatives and friends should immediately take them to a health facility if any of these is observed,’’ Okaga, who is the Director of FP and Coordinator, Reproductive Health, Lagos State’s Ministry of Health said.

Also, Mrs Olukotan of the Lagos State Ministry of Health said that Family Planning was important in improving the lot of mothers, children, fathers and society at large.

“The importance of Family Planning cannot be over-emphasised. It is not only good for the mother; it is also good for the husband, children and the society.

“Family Planning has to do with planning and spacing the number of children that one can adequately cater for.

“It gives room for a woman to recover from the last pregnancy, for close bonding between mother and child; it also gives room for the father to recover financially.

“Family Planning also helps to control unwanted pregnancies, thereby reducing the incidence of abortion and maternal deaths,’’ she said.

According to Olukotan, there are many types of family planning methods, including contraceptives, Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs), injectibles, implants and condoms.

She advised women to visit their nearest health facility for evaluation and counselling before adopting any of the family planning methods
