    Lagos inaugurates security equipment

The Lagos State government will today inaugurate some security equipment to rebrand and reposition its Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, three helicopters, patrol vehicles, power bikes and other security gadgets acquired by the Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration will be inaugurated.

The equipment to be handed over include three helicopters, two patrol boats, 100 motorcycles, 13 BM power bikes, 60 Ford salon cars, 55 Ford Rangers, 40 Toyota salon cars, 10 Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs, 31 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) as well as police uniforms and other kits.

Ayorinde says today’s ceremony will underscore the government’s seriousness in ensuring the security of lives and property.

“With these security equipment, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has demonstrated his firm commitment and ability to safeguard the lives and property of every Lagosian.

“The government is convinced this gesture will further boost the morale and capacity of the police, RRS and other security agencies . It is an attestation to the efficacy of the state’s Security Trust Fund and we believe that this will send a clear signal that criminals and robbers no longer have a hiding place in the state.

“It is noteworthy that the government has stepped up its enforcement of traffic laws and declared zero tolerance on pot holes, a decision that has brought to 282 the number of roads so far rehabilitated in the past five months.

  • Domestic violence a real tragedy – Ambode

Domestic violence a real tragedy – Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says domestic violence continues to be a real tragedy faced by many citizens in the society and requires collaborative effort to address.

Ambode said this in Lagos on Friday night, at a dinner to end the Domestic Violence Awareness Month organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).

He was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule.

The governor said aside legislation, a sustained, coordinated and multi-level approach across all sectors of the society was needed to end domestic violence.

He said that all the sectors in the society, such as the police, health, justice, education and social services must be involved.

“My administration is fully committed to drastically increase the rate of conviction of offenders to serve as deterrent based on the fact that domestic violence is considered a serious crime in Lagos State.

“We have ensured that the right laws are in place, infrastructure and support system are being worked on, and I recently approved the purchase of rescue vehicles to respond timely to distress call.

“We are in the process of establishing more shelter and transit homes as support services for victims and would-be survivors of domestic violence.

“The government alone cannot do it and I urge you all to continue to partner and participate in these sensitisation campaigns as this is the key driver of the fight against sexual and gender-based violence.

“Your partnership and participation will bring succor to victims in Lagos State and ultimately eradicate this menace from our society,” Ambode said.

Also speaking, Mrs Funmilayo Tejuosho, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Mushin Constituency 1, described domestic violence as a crime against humanity.

Tejuosho urged law enforcement agencies to ensure proper and total enforcement of the provisions of the landmark Prevention Against Domestic Violence Law, 2007.

Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, said that domestic violence was a pervasive and heinous violation of human right as well as a threat to development and peace in the world.

According to him, if this crime is left unaddressed, it poses a serious threat to the future generation.

In his remarks, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, promised that the law enforcement agency would put in its best to curb the menace.

Owoseni who was represented by Mr Biodun Odule, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, also urged the public to speak out and report cases of violence within their areas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Domestic Violence Awareness Month, commemorated every October since 1995, is to create awareness, break the silence and end violence once and for all.

Ambode promises to uphold tenets of good governance

Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday said that his government would uphold the tenets of good governance to deepen democratic culture in the country.

Ambode said this in a keynote address at the 2015 edition of Alumni Lecture and Award series of the Herbert Humphrey Alumni Association of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ‘Deepening Democratic Culture in Nigeria’ was theme of the programme.

The governor, who is also a Humphrey Fellow, urged members to be bridge builders.

He implored them to invest in social capital and leadership training to push for positive change.

Ambode said that his training as a Humphrey Fellow had helped in the running of a cosmopolitan state like Lagos.

According to him, the training has also helped his government in laying emphasis on government of inclusion, by creating the Office of Civil Engagement as well as Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

“Lagos must work for everybody and we must create institutional framework that will enable the residents get to the leadership.

“This is a government of inclusion and everybody must have a voice,” he said.

Earlier, the President, Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association, Nigeria, Mr Jude Ememe, said that this year’s edition marked the 75th anniversary of Educational Exchanges between the United States and rest of the world.

  • Classic buses for classic commuters

    Classic buses for classic commuters

LAGOS State Government has taken a major step towards easing commuters’ pains. Last Thursday; it launched 434 air-conditioned buses and inaugurated the expanded Mile 12-Ikorodu Road.

Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State, Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu performed the ceremony.

The buses, tagged BRT Classic or BRT Upgrade, according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, are not owned by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), or the government, but provided by a private firm on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The government provided the infrastructure while the private operators brought in the vehicles to run according to LAMATA’s guidelines.

This, he said, is the hallmark of the new thinking and commitment of the government to providing safe, reliable, comfortable and affordable motorised options for discerning Lagosians who love comfort.

The option, according to him, became imperative due to the gridlock over the last decade. He said not only would the government improve its presence in the sector, it would also ensure the reduction of vehicles on the roads, which would in no small measure ensure cleaner air and environmental preservation, because of reduced emission of carbon-monoxide and other green house gasses into the atmosphere.

Mobereola said the new path was conceptualised in 2008, when the government began the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Scheme. He, however, admitted that “along the line we got derailed and lost that essential part of the scheme that would have attracted it to the business class and professional groups. While we concentrated attention on providing service to the masses, artisans and traders who had no opportunity and may not be able to get their own cars, we neglected to serve a critical segment who might have their cars, or have the means to buy, but may have decided against it if government had provided an alternative that is comfortable, reliable and efficient”.

He said the result was the huge deluge of private vehicles, hundreds of which are added daily by those who have the capacity to acquire private vehicles. Mobereola said the government was determined to make motorised transportation the hub of mass transit in the state, while the waterways and the light rail would be introduced to add to public transportation alternatives for residents of the state.

The BRT, which was introduced on March 17, 2008, on the Ikorodu-CMS route, Mobereola said, has to date carried no fewer than 350 million passengers, and these ones on the daily basis, will carry almost 450,000 passengers.

According to the commissioner, the new thinking is that a city with 22 million people, 60 percent of who must move from one point to the other needs efficient, reliable, accessible and safe transportation system.

Assuring Lagosians of government’s commitment, he said the Ambode administration will in the coming months flood the state with modern and comfortable BRTs adding: “this is just an example of what we planned for Lagos State”.

Transportation experts agreed no less with Mobereola, they argued that if traffic gridlocks could be felt in developed economies of the world with advanced and fully integrated modes of transportation, Lagos with wholesale reliance on the oldest mode of transportation should be expected to worsen in the next decade if government refuses to deepen its involvement and provide leadership in the sector.

Speaking on the road, the commissioner praised the people for their understanding and forbearance all through the planning and execution of the newly expanded road that now has the BRT road at the median, adding that 10 stakeholders’ fora in all were held, all to ensure the buys-in of residents.

“Managing the people while construction was going on simultaneously was a great challenge. We learnt from the mistakes of the past – mostly operational.

“We had 10 stakeholders’ fora, three before the construction work started and seven during the project. We were engaging the people at every stage and they were guiding us. It was close project that involved the community because we needed their buy-in for us to succeed.

He said the project will improve the traffic situation along that corridor. As more people enter the BRT buses, the road will be freer; we are also doing the engineering on the road, especially at the junctions to increase the capacity of the road and make the way big enough to accommodate more traffic.

He said the N30 billion project which was financed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the World Bank and the state government, would enhance the mobility of the people and reduce travel time between CMS and Ikorodu by 60 percent, reducing a journey which presently takes an average of two and half hours to 45 minutes. He said the BRT will give priority to public transport, which is a mass carrier for a lot of people.

Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency 1, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade said the project will add value to the area. He, therefore, challenged the people to maintain the project to encourage the government.

The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabir Sotobi, praised the government for the success of the project and called for the execution of the Ipakodo jetty, which  he said would further boost the transportation initiative of the government.

Representative of Mr Yemi Adeola, the Managing Director of Sterling Bank Plc, (the financier of the buses), Mr Lanre Adesanya thanked the state government for giving the bank the opportunity to partner in making life better for the people of the state. He said the project would benefit no fewer than 4000 families directly and provide jobs for thousands more who would work as ticketers, vendors, mechanics, even as he said the bank has reduced the prevalence of cash in the system.

  • Nigeria now has a focused government – Tinubu

Nigeria now has a focused government – Tinubu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said with the inauguration of the federal executive council by President Muhammadu Buhari the country now has a good and focused government.

Tinubu stated this Thursday while making remarks at the commissioning of the Mile 12-Ikorodu BRT extension at Ikorodu.

He said, “With the team put together by Buhari, he is set to move Nigeria forward, the government is focused, he is the driver of the bus and we are the followers.”

He disclosed that Buhari’s method of planning and redesigning before launching out was the same method he adopted when he started his reign in 1999 and just as they are calling Buhari ‘baba go slow’ that was how he was called go-slow.

“I was complaining then about paucity of funds just as it is now, it was people like the vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and others who were part of the cabinet then that were part of the dream to reclaim and develop Lagos state and set the tone for infrastructural renewal and today we are seeing evidence of it.

He urged Nigerians to support the government, “every one of us is involved in this project one way or the other.

Tinubu said, “We want to continue with the development of our country and make Lagos a model. We want peace, progress, stability, continuity in Lagos state.”

He also advised everyone to be security conscious and report the presence of strange people in their community because as Boko Haram is being dismantled in the North East they are escaping to other parts of the country, “so we must be our brother’s keeper.”

  • Enter Durosinmi-Etti:The Superman of Lagos State

Enter Durosinmi-Etti:The Superman of Lagos State

Superman is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books. Superman is the hero of heroes; the incorruptible ideal by which we, as the human race, should strive to be. He’s the icon that other superheroes look up to. He’s long since permeated the stories he stars in and has become an instantly recognisable symbol across the globe regardless of race, creed, gender, or sexuality. He’s a reminder that no matter how dire things look, no matter how dark and pessimistic things will get — and they will — there’s always something greater to strive towards. People consider him hope for tomorrow, because he’s strong enough to make it happen; rescuing any situation you can think of.

Things don’t just happen, people make them happen. After four months of solely running the affairs of the state without a cabinet, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode officially constituted his cabinet with the swearing-in of 23 commissioners and 14 Special Advisers. I never took much interest in the cabinet, but immediately Mr. Ambode announced Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti as the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, I was overwhelmed with joy and soon began to imagine how this man will arrest a global problem in a state of 24million people that generates more than 14% of the country’s revenue and yet poverty, frustration and idleness looms everywhere in Lagos.

Still thinking, if the ministry will be responsible for Establishment and Maintenance of Job Registration Centres across the State, Registration of unemployed youths in the State, Skill Acquisition programmes for unskilled applicants, Re-orientation programme for graduate applicants in both Private and Public Sector and Establishment and managing of the Job web portal or a different responsibility entirely.

Whenever the name Nigeria is mentioned, the state Lagos comes to mind immediately. Outside the glamour and well-deserved popularity, the state is the most economically important state of the country and is arguably the largest urban area.

Lagos is an extraordinary state: A place where people come with the hope of making their dreams and goals come true. It is a place rich in opportunities and advantages that helps the average Nigerian to become successful, a place where people can start afresh. I may not be wrong if I say that; the ample opportunities in Lagos is a major reason for the large influx of people to the Centre of Excellence.

Undoubtedly, there are so many problems in Lagos: like overpopulation, housing, insecurity and most importantly, unemployment. The rate of joblessness in Lagos state leaves me worry without a clear focus. However, I must commend the Commissioner for accepting this offer.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) the nation’s unemployment rate, in the second quarter (Q2) of 2015, rose to 8.2 per cent from the 7.5 per cent rate, which was recorded in the preceding quarter. This brings to three the consecutive percentage rise in unemployment rate in the country, since the third quarter of 2014. With Kano and Lagos leading in youth unemployment in Nigeria. About 74 percent of the registered unemployed persons are youths in the age bracket of 15 and 34 years, the adults between ages 35 and 44 represent about 17.24 percent while the elderly of aged 45 to 70 constitute about 9 per cent.

Friends, it will only take a real-life superman with ideas, creativity, innovation and a passionate Commissioner to reduce this high rate of joblessness in Lagos; otherwise I see problems that will give rise to insecurity and put the country’s economy at further risks.

Everyone has a dream; everyone will choose to settle in a place best for their development. Everyone knows that the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment is new and over 10 million eyes are on the Commissioner to roll out his risky burger (plans) for consumption. Trust me, I receive an average of 75 calls daily from job seekers seeking too find out the time and date the Commissioner will address them. My shows on Topradio90:9fm, City105.1fm, Unilag103.1fm, Fresh105.9fm and in South Africa has not made me a superman because I do not have the resources to flourish in that circle. However, Mr. Commissioner must consider these few guilds below as the new Superman with a Super job in Lagos:

    Get a superman look

Every superman needs to look passionate. The mind is powerful and therefore having a good, optimistic attitude is bound to have a positive impact. If you think spending time on your appearance for tea party is now then you need to reassess. It takes a passionate man to get down from his car in traffic and take okada to watch how Manchester United will always beat Arsenal. Mr. Commissioner must be passionate about white collar job seekers and young entrepreneurs with great ideas without funds.

    Get a superman job

In our lives, we will probably spend more time with our colleagues than we spend with our mates. So you have to show us you love this office, by spending more time with unemployed Lagosians and engaging them physically. Feel their thoughts, encourage them and give them hope. Don’t be far away. With over five years experience in dealing with job seekers, I have met four job seekers that almost committed suicide. Mr. Commissioner please put a channel to communicate with them directly.

    Get a superman budget

Money, money, money; a big player in empowerment. Thank God for Governor Amobode’s N25billion funds promised during his campaign. This budget can reduce unemployment rate by 50% automatically if properly considered.

    Get a superman team

Where would superman have been without a good team? Every good guy needs other good guys. It is only a good team that can take your office to the next level, very unforgettable era. Sometimes it feels like all the right partners are hiding somewhere far, far away. To find right and genuine partners, be open-minded. Mr. Commissioner please do not fly alone; get reliable stakeholders with practical solutions.

A real superman is always loyal, never takes credit but always rescues the situation and come out victorious. Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, you are the superman of Lagos state to rescue us from joblessness.

We are here waiting, counting and observing before another election year. To whom much is given, much is expected. Readers I invite you to come enjoy this week’s offering. Bon appetit!

Domestic Violence: Ambode urges residents to speak out

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday urged residents to speak out against domestic violence and assist government’s efforts to reduce the menace in the society.

Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, made the call at a Symposium on Gender Based Violence organised by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT).

He said that domestic violence remained a devastating public health crisis as statistics revealed that one in four women would be physically or sexually assaulted at some point in her lifetime.

According to him, the government will endeavor to provide landmark prevention against domestic violence, protect survivors, bring offenders to justice and change attitudes that support such violence.

“As a government, we are in the process of establishing more shelter and transit homes for victims, procurement of rape kits and training of relevant agencies to equip them with the tools required to combat this evil.

“Our law enforcement and justice system must work to hold offenders accountable and protect victims and their children.

“Ending domestic violence requires a collaborative effort of every part of the society.

“We, however, call on stakeholders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, market leaders, NGOs, law enforcement agencies and the media to join this fight.

“There is still much to be done to reach thousands of survivors and break the culture of silence to prevent countless incidences of abuse and save untold numbers of lives.

“We assure the citizens of our administration’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of domestic violence in Lagos State, “he said.

Also speaking, Justice Yetunde Idowu, Head, Lagos State Family Court, urged citizens to utilise the helpline – 112, to receive further information on relevant support services available.

Idowu said that the government was working with all relevant agencies and organisations to respond proactively to acts of domestic violence as crimes, and afford the victims access to the relevant support services.

In her remarks, the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Funlola Odunlami, said that domestic violence was a serious community problem that required serious attention.

Odunlami said that it affected individuals of all tribes, cultural groups, religions and socio-economic backgrounds.

She urged the public to recognise domestic violence as a public matter and not a private matter, to increase awareness and break the silence.
