Lagos Taskforce impounds 139 Okada in renewed crackdown on banned routes

In a fresh push to enforce traffic regulations, the Lagos State Task Force has intensified its crackdown on commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, who continue to violate the government’s ban on restricted routes.

The latest enforcement operation was carried out in key locations such as Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Abule-Ado, Agric Bus Stop, and Ojo Barracks, resulting in the seizure of no fewer than 139 motorcycles.

Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Shola Jejeloye, who briefed journalists on the development, said the operation is part of the state’s broader effort to restore order and protect lives on major highways and bridges where Okada operations have been prohibited.

“The ban on Okada in specific corridors was instituted to safeguard lives and property. We are maintaining a zero-tolerance stance toward violations, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,” Jejeloye said.

He expressed concern that despite multiple warnings and sensitization campaigns, many riders remain defiant, endangering public safety. He added that all impounded motorcycles will be forfeited and legal action taken against the riders.

Reaffirming the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to safety under the THEMES Plus agenda, Jejeloye urged residents to support the initiative by shunning Okada in restricted areas and reporting defaulters.

“The safety and security of Lagosians remain our top priority.  Our patrol and enforcement activities will continue unabated, especially in identified hotspots for illegal Okada operations,” Jejeloye added.

The Lagos State Taskforce has vowed to sustain the momentum of the clampdown as part of broader traffic and urban management reforms in Africa’s most populous city.

In a renewed effort to sanitize the metropolis and tackle criminal activities, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit arrested 52 suspects during a routine enforcement operation carried out in the early hours of yesterday.

The operation, which began around 12:35 a.m., was led by the Agency’s Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, and covered several areas notorious for illicit activities, including Lekki, Ikoyi, Falomo Bridge, Eko Hotel, and Ligali Ayorinde.

According to a statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the raid was prompted by numerous complaints and distress calls concerning the activities of street urchins, hooligans, pickpockets, and other suspected criminals, particularly during late-night hours.

The exercise led to the arrest of 51 male suspects and one female suspect, with officials successfully restoring order in the affected areas.

Speaking on the operation, CSP Akerele reaffirmed the Taskforce’s commitment to maintaining environmental sanity and protecting lives and property across Lagos State.

“We will continue to sustain these enforcement exercises until every part of the city is free from criminal activities. Those who choose to engage in acts that threaten the serenity and security of residents should desist immediately or face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Akerele noted that the clean-up forms part of a broader strategy to conduct bi-weekly operations aimed at rooting out criminal elements and protecting law-abiding citizens and businesses.

He added that all suspects apprehended during the exercise would be charged to court.

“The Lagos State Taskforce had no involvement in the unfortunate extortion of the lady or her mother. Available records show that we currently do not have any offices, garages, or car parks at Ketu, and no team was assigned to man the BRT corridor at the time of the incident,” the statement read.

The agency clarified that enforcement and monitoring of BRT lanes fall under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which has a separate enforcement team.

In response to public concerns over the viral footage, the Taskforce advised Lagosians to avoid.

“Any attempt to link the enforcement, arrest, and subsequent extortion of the lady to Lagos State Environmental Taskforce officials is completely baseless,” the statement reiterated.

The agency also encouraged members of the public with credible complaints or evidence of misconduct involving its personnel to come forward to aid proper investigation.

While reaffirming its commitment to lawful enforcement, Abdulraheem noted that all Taskforce operations are conducted with professionalism, decorum, and within the confines of the law, adding that every arrest by the agency is ultimately subjected to court adjudication.

The suspects, identified as Ismail Akinlade (26), Rasak Abiodun (25), Adefabi Gbolahan (25), and Rilwan Olaloye (20), were arrested in Mushin following a series of intelligence-led operations.

Their modus operandi involved exploiting bad road conditions to rob motorists of valuables such as phones, bags, and cash.

Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed that the arrests came after weeks of monitoring and investigations into criminal activities in specific parts of the state.

“These individuals reportedly target distracted motorists, stealing valuables while distracting the occupants,” Akerele explained.

During interrogation, one of the suspects, Ismail Akinlade, confessed to his involvement in the crimes and revealed the network behind their operations.

“Whenever I steal, I give the phone to ‘Number One’ (currently at large) in Mushin, who handles selling our loot. After a while, we return for the cash proceeds, which we spend on drugs and gambling,” he admitted.

Lagos taskforce warns against blocking roads for parties, social gatherings

The Lagos State Taskforce has warned against closing highways for religious gatherings or celebrations, declaring that anyone found participating will be held accountable.

In a statement on Tuesday by Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, its Director of Press and Public Affairs, the agency denounced “this practice entirely,” claiming that it is inconvenient for other residents and motorists.

The statement reads partly: “The Lagos State Taskforce has issued a strong warning to residents who habitually block streets and occupy parts of the road to host parties, social gatherings, and religious events, causing inconvenience to other residents and motorists. Committed to maintaining environmental decorum and ensuring smooth traffic flow across the state, the Lagos State Taskforce has condemned this practice entirely.”

The agency’s chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, voiced concern in the statement about the increasing practice of blocking public roadways for private gatherings, pointing out that these activities disturb the lives of law-abiding individuals and provide significant security and safety hazards.

“It is unacceptable for any individual or group to hijack public spaces, especially roads meant for the free movement of people and vehicles, for their own selfish interests,” he stated.

Akerele brought up a recent instance in which the force responded to complaints of noise pollution and traffic obstruction, disrupting a social gathering on Raymond Njoku Street in Ikoyi.

“The event was terminated, and key organisers were arrested.

“We are also aware of similar events on streets like Lawani Street in Yaba, Ganiyu Lamina Street at Ijaye Ojokoro, and other locations across the Lagos Metropolis. We are appealing to those involved in this practice to desist forthwith or face serious legal consequences,” he warned.

The Chairman further emphasised that any action that jeopardizes public safety and the environment or causes displeasure to drivers will not be accepted by the Lagos Taskforce.

He emphasized that anyone found to be in violation of this directive will face enforcement action.

Akerele also reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to ensuring a safer, more orderly environment for all residents.

“The Lagos State Taskforce, in collaboration with other security agencies, will conduct routine monitoring and swift enforcement to prevent further disruption of roads and inner streets. Residents are encouraged to report any road obstructions through the Taskforce’s ‘See Something, Say Something’ initiative to ensure prompt intervention,” the statement added.
