    …as organisers plan big for EXPO

    The 2025 edition of the highly-anticipated Lagos Women Run will witness huge attendance judging by the number of entries received.

    Coordinator of the event, Tayo Popoola, stated that the annual 10km race has attracted over 8,000 participants from various parts of the country and even beyond.

    She expressed huge delight that the event, which is in its 10th edition this year, is getting bigger  in line with the vision of the Lagos State Government.

     “We are happy with the great support we are enjoying from the Government of Lagos State. The Lagos State Sports Commission DG, Lekan Fatodu, has been monitoring our activities with great enthusiasm.

    “All is going well and we expect next week to be full of activities for the 2025 event,” Popoola said.

    This year, the Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, has been named an Ambassador of the Lagos Women Run and the Special Guest of Honour.

    The Lagos Women run is an initiative of Gym Assured, Marathon & Road Race Organization, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and a dedicated group of women with professional backgrounds in sports management, administration.

    Fatodu, LSSC GD, it was learnt has charged all those in charge of various departments of the organizing committee to double efforts as the event draws near.

    Already, plans are also in top gear for the EXPO expected to start on November 4 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

    Coordinator of the EXPO, Sidikat Folami, said there are various activities and empowerment initiatives lined up for the participants of the Lagos Women Run pre-event.

    The Lagos Women Run takes place on Saturday November 8.

    Joy David retains Lagos Women Run title

    The 9th edition of the Lagos Women run ended glamorously on Saturday with Joy Abiye David retaining the title she clinched last year.

    The Ondo State runner posted a time of 38:35:21 to win the first position ahead of Cameroon’s Liliane Nguesta who finished with a time of 40:02:54.

    Charity Ogofure finished in the third position closely with her 40:09:23 effort.

    It was fun all the way for the participants from the Start point at the Tafawa Balewa Square to the Finish line at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena Onikan.

    Victorious David received a prize of N1.5m for her efforts, Nguesta received N500,000 while 2nd runner-up Ogofure went home with N300,000.

    Speaking after the race, David expressed delight in winning the race again.

    “I am so happy, excited. I came to try again but somehow, I won again. I give glory to God,” she said.

    Lagos Women Run: Organisers begin kits distribution tomorrow  

    Athletes expected to participate in the 2024 Lagos Women Run will start collecting their kits from tomorrow at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.  

    Incidentally, the event’s exhibition, which is part of the week-long programme, will also start tomorrow much to the delight of the organisers.

    Tayo Popoola, the coordinator of the programme, said there were many other activities leading to the November 9 event. 

    She said: “Exhibition (expo) is offering a platform for skills and vocational training such as basic painting, Tie & Die, skincare, Waste Management, Food Packaging, Cake Making. Fruit Juice Mixing, Basic Make Up, Basic Computer Training.

    “All participants will receive the following benefits: Running Vest, Running Bibs, Goody Bag, Certificate, Medals, and Sponsors’ products. Gift vouchers will be provided to the first 500 women group who arrive at the start point before 6.am.”

    The Lagos Women Run is a 10km event, an initiative of Gym Assured, Marathon & Road

    Race Organization, in conjunction with the Lagos State Government and a dedicated group of women with professional backgrounds in sports management, administration, and other women- focused organizations. Since its inception in 2016 in Lagos, the event has grown and is expected to expand to other parts of the nation.

     LWR aims to support and foster the growing fitness culture across the continent while addressing critical issues affecting women, such as No Poverty, Female Child Education, Zero Hunger, and Equality. This event provides a unique platform where women can unite, find common purpose, and raise their voices, using fitness as a rallying point.

    An anticipated participation of approximately 200,000 women from Nigeria and across the continent. Supported by the Lagos State Government, the event will feature top-notch medical facilities, security, and traffic control.
