INEC: Osun, Lagos, Ogun top CVR online registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday released statistics of online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), with Ogun, Lagos, and Osun states leading the table of those that have registered online ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The statistics also revealed that four of the five states in the South East are leading the table from the rear with a cumulative figure of 1,998 persons.

Osun is leading the pack with 393,269 representing 28.51 percent of the total number, followed by Lagos with 222,205 (16.11 percent), Ogun with 132,823 (9.63 percent) and the FCT with 107,682 (7. 81 percent).

Ebonyi takes the rear with 261 persons (0.02 percent), followed by Imo with 481 (0. 03 percent), Enugu with 484 (0.04 percent) while

Abia has the highest number from the South East with 772 (0. 06 percent)

A statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians registered nationwide in just one week.

The statement reads: “The nationwide online pre-registration of voters commenced on Monday, 18th August 2025. As of yesterday, Sunday 24th August 2025, a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians registered nationwide in just one week.

“As promised, the Commission is glad to publish the first weekly update of the exercise by providing details of the registration by State, gender, age, occupation and disability.

“The breakdown of the online pre-registrations shows that 661,846 (47.96%) are male and 717,856 (52.04%) are female. Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 constitute the majority of the registrants, with 860,286 (62.37%).

“In terms of occupation, 374,534 (27.15%) are students, while the figure for persons with disability is 27,089 (1.96%). Full details have been published on our website and other official platforms for public information.

“Meanwhile, physical registration kicks off today in our 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. This will afford those who prefer the in-person option to register at the centres and those who choose the online pre-registration method to complete their registration.

“Once again, the Commission appeals to the public that the ongoing voter registration is only open to Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and who are not registered voters. Double or multiple registration is a violation of the law. However, inter-State/FCT and intra-State/FCT transfer of voters, as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voters’ cards, are allowed during the CVR.

“The exercise will continue for one year until 30th August 2026. However, the Commission urged all intending registrants not to wait until the deadline approaches when, from experience, the registration centres are inundated by eleventh hour registrants amidst appeals for extension of time”.

However, the list published does not include Anambra state, where the Continuous Voter Registration was conducted recently in preparation for the November governorship election in the state.

Army hands over fake major to police in Lagos

The Nigerian Army has handed over a 36-year-old man, identified as Animashaun Khalid, to the Lagos State Police Command after he was caught impersonating a senior military officer.

Khalid was arrested at the popular Arena Market in Oshodi by soldiers of the 9 Brigade, Ikeja, after he was found in possession of a forged Nigerian Army identity card bearing his name and the rank of Major.

The suspect was immediately transferred to the police in what authorities described as a seamless operation that reflects improved cooperation between the military and police in Lagos.

Police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Monday, said the case has been assigned to the Command’s Special Squad I for discreet investigation.

He explained that detectives would focus on unravelling the source of the forged ID, identifying possible accomplices, and determining whether the suspect had used the fake rank to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, commended the Army for its swift action and urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant.

The suspect is expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.

  • Lagos doctors threaten strike over unpaid salaries, welfare issues

Lagos doctors threaten strike over unpaid salaries, welfare issues

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Branch, has warned that doctors may soon withdraw their services if the state government and hospital authorities fail to address growing grievances over unpaid salaries, arbitrary deductions, and poor welfare conditions.

In a communiqué issued on Sunday after an Emergency General Meeting held virtually on August 15, 2025, the association accused the Lagos State Government of “subjecting doctors to financial hardship” and faulted the management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for “neglecting doctors’ welfare.”

NMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, said doctors would not continue to work under such conditions, stressing that “enough is enough.”

The association said it fully supports the Medical Guild’s 21-day ultimatum to the government, which ends on August 25, warning that a solidarity strike could begin in September if their demands are not met.

The dispute stems from unauthorized deductions reportedly made from doctors’ salaries in April and July. Although April’s deductions were refunded, July’s have yet to be returned, prompting a three-day warning strike between July 28 and 30. The Guild is demanding an immediate refund and full payment of August salaries.

“If by August 25 these issues remain unresolved, the Medical Guild will down tools indefinitely. NMA Lagos will join in solidarity two weeks later if the government continues to ignore us,” the communiqué stated.

Doctors at LUTH have also raised alarm over the absence of call duty meals for more than five years.

During a February 2025 meeting with Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. AbdulWasiu Adeyemo, the CMD reportedly proposed that doctors should purchase meals at subsidized rates, even while on call duty.

“We will not accept a situation where doctors on 24-hour call duties are denied meals and told to buy food. This is inhumane and unacceptable,” Dr. Kehinde said.

The association said the matter would be revisited in three weeks after further deliberations with the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in LUTH.

Another issue causing disquiet is the non-payment of skipping arrears to some doctors in LUTH, even though such arrears have been settled in other federal hospitals.

The CMD had earlier directed the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), LUTH chapter, to submit a list of affected doctors. But the process has dragged on, leaving doctors frustrated.

The NMA insisted that “workers deserve their wages irrespective of when the arrears were incurred” and demanded that payments be made without further delay.

The association called on Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, to urgently intervene and resolve the crises before they snowball into a full-scale shutdown of the health system.

“We urge the Honourable Commissioner for Health to engage the relevant MDAs intensively and passionately. Doctors are being pushed to the wall. This is about fairness, justice, and survival of the health system,” the communiqué concluded.
