Lagos flags off tax campaign at GTBank

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has flagged off the electronic tax payment campaign of the state which will allow residents and citizens of Lagos State to pay their taxes directly to the coffers of the State Government. The flag-off campaign was kicked off at the bank’s Opebi branch, Lagos.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Ambode noted that this noble effort was implemented to help tax payers make direct deposits to the government coffers seamlessly.

According to him, “The process in the payment of taxes has been simplified for the residents and citizens of Lagos State who are the direct beneficiaries of the productive utilization of taxes in the state. All the projects that have either been completed since the commencement of my administration or those that are underway have been done through taxes. Lagosians would henceforth be able to pay their taxes through GTBank branches; the mobile payment and internet banking platforms of all banks.

Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Segun Agbaje, said, “The e-tax payment campaign has shown the premium placed on electronic payment by the Lagos State Government and this would equally aid the financial inclusion program of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

  • Lagos abolishes cash payment

    Lagos abolishes cash payment

From March 1, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in Lagos State will no longer accept cash payment.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode made this known yesterday after paying his Land Use Charge at the Opebi, Ikeja branch of the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).

It was to mark the beginning of “Land Use Charge” collection under the new arrangement for revenue collection.

The measure, Ambode said,  was aimed at improving on service delivery to the public and also to plug revenue leakages.

By making the transaction process in revenue collection easy, people can now pay every day, any time and online, the governor noted.

“In order to ensure that the government improves on the quality of service delivery to our people, effective from March 1, no payment or taxes will be made by cash henceforth across the state. Tax payers should be able to pay all legitimate bills through all payment channels at their own time and convenience. The transaction process is now going to be every day, anytime and no weekends. We should be able to pay our taxes from any bank, any branch using webpay, paypoint and USSD, thereby encouraging mobile money without any contact with government officials. I repeat, every kobo counts; do not pay into wrong hands anymore,” Ambode explained.

According to the governor, the new payment platform, being done in partnership with Interswitch Limited, will ensure that all the multi-layer platforms would now be deployed and used by all  ministries, agencies, parastatals, associated companies and units.

Ambode said he was showing leadership by example by paying his land use charge as  the government could not preach and promise prosperity without leading by example.

He  enjoined all residents and taxable adults to be faithful to their civic obligations.

“For every one kobo you pay as taxes, we will give greater value and comfort to all citizens without anyone left behind,” he assured.

Ambode directed all  the councils to adjust their collection machineries to  eliminate leakages.

  • Saboteurs behind Lagos refuse, says Cleaner Lagos

Saboteurs behind Lagos refuse, says Cleaner Lagos

Officials of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI)  have raised the alarm over  attempts by those they referred to as saboteurs to frustrate  the state’s  new waste management policy.

They  said the saboteurs were determined to kill all efforts to make Lagos  cleaner and healthier.

A senior CLI, who preferred anonymity said it was unfortunate that those who felt the new arrangement would affect them adversely were working hard to sabotage it by all means, including deliberate dumping of large volume of waste in public places.

The official said: “Take for instance, the picture of heaps of refuse under the Idumagbo Pedestrian Bridge that was published today (yesterday) in a national daily. The refuse at that spot was evacuated just overnight and the team finished by 3am today (Sunday) and by 3am, the heap of refuse was back there, including a fully loaded LAWMA big refuse container that was not there previously.

“As I am talking to you, our officials have returned to the same spot to clear everything. The Commissioner for the Environment was also there to see things for himself and he has asked the Private Sector Participant (PSP) operator that dropped the container belonging to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on the spot to remove it immediately.

“That has been the challenge. When our officials clear the heaps of refuse from a spot, before one could say Jack Robinson, the heaps were back on the same spot cleared by our officials and this really has to stop because a cleaner Lagos is in our collective interest,” he said.

The new policy encapsulated in the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) was introduced to address the challenges in the sector, and as well revolutionise waste management in the state in line with international best practices.

A source said the permutation of those behind the sabotage was that if they kept dumping tonnes of refuse in public places, they would achieve the twin objective of distracting CLI officials from paying adequate attention to other places while projecting the initiative, which is targeted at a comprehensive turnaround of Lagos to become one of the cleanest cities in the world, as a failure.

Another reliable source said the situation had also been compounded by members of the public who indiscriminately dump their waste in public places and not the designated spots, saying that such was also a challenge.

Also, in a recent video that went viral on social media, an official of Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, Mr John Olawale Joseph, had lamented how people were dumping refuse on the same spots in public places, thus frustrating the efforts to rid the state of filth.

Joseph, who is Visionscape’s Area Manager for Lagos Island West, alleged that heaps of refuse sometimes appear overnight in places already cleared by environmental officials, saying that the deliberate sabotage of the project called for concern.

  • Lagos helps retirees manage change from active service

Lagos helps retirees manage change from active service

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has said that the state is helping retirees and pensioners to manage their transition from active service to retirement.

Ambode, represented by Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson spoke at the opening session of the workshop tagged: How to Prepare Officers of the Lagos State Civil Service for Retirement, organised by the Civil Service Pensions Office (CSPO) of the ministry.

He said that the CSPO is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that pensioners of the state on the ‘pay as you go’ scheme are paid their entitlements as and when due, adding that the CSPO has been responsible for the welfare of pensioners and retirees in the state.

He disclosed that over the years, the CSPO has put in place various measures to ease the burden of retirees and ensure their comfort.

He stated that while many employers of labour and indeed, many state governments do not see the need to prepare their employees for a new life, his administration has resolved that everyone who has worked diligently for the state has to be recognised, paid his or her dues and assisted to prepare for future challenges.

He noted that the state is training its wokers to help recently retired pensioners to manage change.

He said:“This training is designed to prepare officers of the CSPO to counsel and advise retirees and pensioners on how to manage the transition from active service to retirement. In this address, I wish to point out the general modalities for fulfilling this task. As prospective retirees facing a new future, officers of the CSPO assert and allay their fears about the future. They should encourage them to eschew fear and anxiety and instead embrace faith and hope as they go into a new stage in their lives.

“While change may bring daunting challenges, you really have nothing to be anxious about. In the first place, you have the advantage of having served an organisation that has made adequate arrangements for your future in retirement. As at the middle of 2017, the Lagos State Government had paid accrued pension rights of approximately N28 billion into the Retirement Savings Account of 6,509 retirees in the preceding 22 months alone. Furthermore, the Lagos State Government has continued to remit money into officers’ Retirement Savings Accounts. In fact, the government has paid the approximate sum of N62 billion into the Retirement Savings Accounts (RSA) of about 13,000 retirees since the commencement of the payment of entitlements in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) dispensation. Indeed, everyone should be proud to note that Lagos State remains perhaps the only state in the federation that is up to date in its monthly remittances into serving employees’ Retirement Savings Accounts.

“Retirement Benefit Documentation seminars are held bi-annually. The seminar is put together for the core civil servants and other employees in the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), Teachers’ Establishment & Pensions Office (TEPO), Government Parastatals and Local Government Staff, who will soon be retiring or have recently retired from the State’s Public Service. It is a programme designed to educate retirees like you on the documentation required to enable them have quick access to your terminal entitlements. Secondly, it is to expose you to the fears and challenges faced by retirees and measures to take to ensure your peace of mind as you transit into another phase of your life.

  • Lagos on red alert over Lassa fever

Lagos on red alert over Lassa fever

Lagos State Government said it is maintaining relevant surveillance activities through its disease surveillance unit to prevent the spread of Lassa fever in the state.

Commissioner for Health Dr Jide Idris, said in a statement that prevention and control of the disease, however, remains a shared responsibility of all citizens.

“Isolation wards have been prepared to manage suspected and confirmed cases, health workers have been placed on red alert and community sensitisation activities intensified.

“There is need the public to ensure and maintain adequate personal hygiene and environmental sanitation at all times as part of prevention and control measures against the spread of Lassa fever in the state,’’ Idris said.

The commissioner urged the public to store house-hold refuse in sanitary refuse bags or dust bins with tight-fitting covers to avoid infestation by rats and rodents.

He also urged people to dispose refuse properly at designated dump sites and not into the drainage system and store food items in rodent-proof containers.

According to him, by so doing, a habitable and conducive environment, and a disease-free state can be achieved.

“Members of the public are further advised to avoid contact with rats and to always cover their food and water properly.

“Cook all your food thoroughly, as well as block all holes in the septic tanks and holes through which rats can enter the house and clear rat hideouts within the premises,’’ he said.

The commissioner urged health workers in public and private hospitals to ensure they observed universal safety precautions and complied with infection prevention and control measures when dealing with patients.

He also stressed the need for workers to wear appropriate personal protective equipment like hand gloves, facemasks, goggles and overalls when attending to cases.

“Safety boxes should be used for collection of used needles and syringes and general medical waste must be properly sorted out in colour-coded bags and disposed in line with international standards.

“Hands must be washed often with soap and running water or application of hand sanitisers after each contact with patients or contaminated materials and instruments must be autoclaved.

“Also hospital mattresses must be covered with plastic sheets to prevent contamination.

“The plastic sheets must be large enough to cover the entire mattress, be waterproof, and be thoroughly disinfected after discharge of patients,’’ Idris said.

According to him, Lassa fever is an acute viral infection caused by the Lassa virus that is associated with symptoms such as persistent high fever, general weakness of the body, malaise headache, sore throat, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

He said that the disease could progress into a severe form where the patient develops facial swelling, fluid in the chest.

He said also that the patient could develop bleeding from the mouth, nose and the gut; low blood pressure, shock, disorientation, coma, and kidney and liver failure.
