    Lagos advocates sustainable sanitation practice

The Lagos State Government has joined the rest of the world to mark the World Toilet Day – a day set aside to promote healthy sanitation practices.

At the celebration, which held at the Ojodu/Berger Bus Terminus, in the Ikeja Local Government Area, last week, the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, said the day brought to the front burner germane issues, such as water, sanitation and hygiene, affecting the people. He noted that the proper handling of these critical issues would help reduce government’s expenditure on the treatment of diseases, and make more money available for other facilities for public use.

Adejare said by the United Nations’ estimate, 2.5 per cent of the world’s seven billion people, mostly in rural areas, do not have proper sanitation while 1.1 billion people still defecate in the open.

“This has significant impacts on human health, dignity and security as well as the environment, social and economic development. The countries where open defecation is most widely practiced are the same countries with the highest mortality rate of children under five, high levels of under nutrition and poverty as well as large wealth disparities,” he said.

This staggering statistics, the Commissioner said, calls for urgent action among all stakeholders to prioritise toilet and sanitation issues, enhance access to water and sanitation facilities as well as spread awareness of the ills of undesirable sanitation practices. He agreed that sanitation and toilet issues required urgent actions to stem the tide of diseases and bring about healthy citizenry.

Adejare said the current administration was making concerted efforts to eradicate the menace of open defecation and urination through the provision of public toilets and upgrading of already existing facilities across the state.

“All public institutions in the state such as petrol stations, eateries and shopping malls are mandated to maintain clean toilets and give access to members of the public. We have also ensured that non-compliance attracts appropriate sanctions,” he disclosed.

He said the Lagos State government’s commitment to attaining the smart-city status for the state could not be sacrificed at the altar of poor sanitation and inefficient solid waste management, stressing that the environment remained the state’s priority as it was important for maintaining a secure and more prosperous state.

The commissioner, therefore, enjoined Lagosians to join in the crusade of attaining a cleaner, healthier, functional and sustainable environment, capable of promoting economic growth and well-being of the citizenry.

  • Lagos, 9mobile partner on coding centres

The Lagos State Government yesterday launched two additional Coding Centres, raising the number to 200 across the state.

They were inaugurated by the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Education, Obafela Bank-Olemoh, at Rabiatu Thompson Memorial Primary School, Surulere, on the  mainland and Akande Dahunsi Memorial Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi, on the island.

The centres have been adopted by telecom operator 9mobile under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The CodeLagos is an initiative of the Ministry of Education with a charge on the private sector to key into the government’s vision of making coding education framework accessible to students.

Bank-Olemoh reiterated the government’s commitment to training one million Lagosians to code by 2019.

The Special Adviser, who was represented by the Director General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, described CodeLagos as the first-of-its-kind initiative to sharpen the pupils’ knowledge.

According to him, it will enable pupils in the state to harness, create and leverage on the 21st century opportunities as well as increase their employment and business opportunities in Information Technology as well as enhance the state’s global competitiveness and best practices.

He said: “CodeLagos seeks to teach at least one million Lagos residents to code by 2019 and also foster necessary skills to create sustainable solutions to social challenges and create employment opportunities.

“The Lagos State government has therefore aimed at making coding education framework accessible to every student in Lagos State by encouraging the private sector to key into this new initiative, as the state would continue to create an enabling environment conducive for investment.”

The Acting Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Director for 9mobile, Mrs Oluseyi Osunsedo, said the firm’s investment into the centres included computers, internet access, solar power, furniture, and payment of stipends to the coding facilitators.

She expressed hope that through the initiative, the pupils would not only learn about but use new technology to solve societal problems.

“We are very happy with this partnership with Lagos State on CodeLagos.  The digital revolution has taken over and we have to empower our students to compete to be able to make contributions in future.  We believe that we are exposing the children to technology that ideally every child should be exposed to and we are encouraging the children to make the best use of this opportunity,” Mrs. Osunsedo said.

  • Lagos to shut down Oba Akran Road for carnival

The Lagos State Government yesterday said it is set to stage this year’s edition of the Lagos Street Carnival scheduled to hold on December 3 on Oba Akran Avenue in Ikeja.

The Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon Adebimpe Akinsola, in an interview with reporters, said the venue of the carnival would be shut down but adequate preparations have been made for alternative routes to mitigate the impact of the road closure on motorists and residents.

Dubbed: “Lagos Street Party” in its maiden edition last year, the event has grown into a carnival to mark the  beginning of the Ministry’s end of the year activities.

It is also designed to celebrate the multi-cultural nature of Lagosians and reposition the State as a formidable cultural destination.

Speaking on security arrangements already put in place, Akinsola said: “To this end, several adjoining roads would be closed on the day of the carnival while alternative routes could be accessed by road users.

“We like to assure Lagosians and visitors that efforts are in place to ensure that the venue and environs are safe and incident-free.

“We expect more visitors this year and a lot more will be coming. In terms of security and crowd control, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is not working alone. We are working with the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fire service, LASAMBUS and the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA). All of them are onboard and people are not going to see Oba Akran on Monday in a dirty state,” Akinsola said.

Giving details about the carnival, Akinsola said: “Last week, we rolled out our end of the year programme. The Lagos street carnival is to herald the yuletide season. When you talk of carnival, it is to showcase all the diversity of cultures in Lagos State.

“There is going to be an overflow all through Oba Akran; people dancing, eating, showcasing diverse cultures from different local governments and other estate groups that are resident in Lagos State.

“That was how it was done on the Island and this year we are bringing it to the mainland and of course next year, we would be looking at another location because the aim of government is to take this carnival all round Lagos. It is not a programme that would be static, but would move round across Lagos State, why because the Governor in his acceptance as the helmsman  promised Lagosians that he is going to run an all inclusive government where no one would be left behind, not in infrastructure alone, but in every sense of governance and he has been doing that systematically since he assumed office,”  Mrs Akinsola said.
