Sen. Sodangi backs Nasarawa on sale of assets

A three- term senator, Abubakar Sodangi, on Wednesday backed the decision of the Nasarawa State Government to sale some of its assets.

Criticisms had trailed the approval by the state Assembly, on Sept.25, allowing Gov.Tanko Almakura to dispose some of the government assets in Lagos, Jos and Kaduna.

Sodangi, who represented Nasarawa West in the Senate from 1999 to 2011, said that the decision to sell off the properties was in the best interest of the state.

He however said that the proceeds should be invested in areas that would have positive impact on the lives of the people.

“I want to start by saying that whatever you see a governor or government of a state is planning on doing, they must have reasons for them.

“From what I heard, the reason for the sale of these assets was due to total wastage, dilapidation and deteriorating condition of these properties.

“If keeping and maintaining these properties is waste and the best thing a government think is to sell the properties and reinvest the money in prosperous and viable venture to better the lives of the people of the state, so it be.

“Some other people may have their own different views. If you are running any business at a loss, I believe that the best thing is to do away with it; that is my own personal thinking,” he said.

Sodangi urged people of the state to support the government, so as to succeed.

He urged Nigerians especially the youths to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and engage in meaningful ventures that would make them self reliant.

  • Lagos: our interest is gas to power economy

Lagos: our interest is gas to power economy

•PPPRA ‘has lost relevance to PIGB’

The Lagos State government yesterday said it is more interested in gas to generate power to run the engine of its economy.

It has therefore urged the Federal Government to allocate the remaining oil blocks in the Dahomey basin for more oil prospecting.

Its Commissioner for Energy & Mineral Resources, Mr. Olawale Oluwo, who spoke yesterday at a Breakfast Business Lecture organised by the Island Club in Lagos titled: Petroleum Industry Bill: Challenges and Opportunities, said the state government will take advantage of the rare oil discovery in Dahomey basin.

He said: “Our interest is not in oil but in gas. We need gas to power Lagos economy. “Our programme is centred on power generation that will be off-grid.”

Oluwo also said the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) will have no business in the downstream sector when the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) comes into operation.

He said the establishment of the Nigeria Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NPRC) in the PIGB will make the PPPRA irrelevant.

According to him, the NPRC will be a one-stop regulatory body, so PPPRA will have no business in the downstream when the NPRC comes into force.

Oluwo who was the chief host at the meeting, advocated for a downstream driven by the forces of demand and supply. He said  a deregulated downstream is the way forward for the country. According to him, the Federal Government has been regulating petrol price through which the rich take advantage of the masses. This is not correct, he argued

“If you must regulate fuel price, you must ensure that you have a very deep pocket to subsidise the products. If you don’t have a deep pocket, the market will help you by creating a black market that sets the appropriate price for the product. But if the price is driven by the forces of demand and supply, competition will set in and force down the price,” he said.

He cited the case of the price of Global Systme for Mobile (GSM) communications subscriber identity module (SIM) cards which are now being given free of charge today.

He recalled that in the past, a SIM card costs over N30,000 but competition has made it to be given freely today. “So, I don’t belong to the school of thought that says prices that go up in Nigeria will not come down.

“Prices do come down as long as there is competition. I like the PIGB and we will like to see more reforms in oil and gas. It is in Nigeria that I see products and commodities that are characterised by inelastic demand and for which we can’t have close substitutes to be subsidised by the government.

“So our problem is structural and we must continue to handle it from the structural correction perspectives. In Nigeria, we subsidise all commodities including electricity, gas, petrol, interest rates, foreign exchange, among others. Government should allow the private sector play its role in all these,” he added.

He congratulated The Island Club for the business meeting and Folawiyo Petroleum for making Lagos State an oil producing state.

  • Rotary, community walk against breast cancer

Rotary, community walk against breast cancer

No fewer than 100 members of four clubs in Rotary International District 9110 and the Indian Women’s Association, Lagos have held a walk to create awareness on breast cancer prevention and cure. They were Rotary clubs of Falomo, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos Central and Okota.

The walk covered some streets in Lekki Phase One.  It was coordinated by the President of Lagos Central Rotary Club, Sanjev Tandon.

Participants in the event entitled Rotopink Walkathon’17 wore pink T-shirts and fez caps with the slogan “it’s time to wear pink. It’s time to beat breast cancer.’’ Some brought their little children who also took part in the walk. They were not allowed to drive their cars. They carried a large banner, which proclaimed the importance of the walk.

The journey took off from the Geeta Ashram Temple on Grace Anjos Drive, moved to Admiralty Way, the Roundabout and veered off into the Lekki Phase One-Ikoyi Bridge before returning to the starting point.

A Rotarian, Chief Anil Glover along with others, ensured that the walk was without any incident by directing members from oncoming vehicles. “This way, this way…’’ he ordered several times.

Members of the Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) were also on hand to ensure hitch-free walk.

Tandon, in an interview, said: ‘’Breast cancer is one of the deadly diseases in the world. We are here to tell Nigerians why it is still happening and how they can prevent it. We can’t help them financially. But we create the knowledge through this walk, seminars, talks, distribution of fliers and even brought in experts to speak on breast cancer prevention.’’

He said if the people knew about the symptoms of the disease on time, they would be able to come out early for treatment and that this would reduce its spread. ‘’Timely intervention brings in cure,’’ he said.

Tandon added that beside breast cancer, the club also has blood donation, free eye treatment and women empowerment as part of its programmes for the year.

President of Indian Women’s Association, Mrs Geetika Tandon said it was important to educate people about the disease–what symptoms to look out for, and how to get round them.

“Before” they said, “cancer had no cure, know it can be treated,’’ she said.

District 9110 Assistant Governor Kayode Adeinokun praised the clubs for the holding the walk. “The walk will enlighten people on the street on how to prevent the calamity being created by the disease.’’

After the walk, Mrs Omolola Salako gave a talk on the prevention of cancer, especially cervical cancer. She said because cervical cancer is caused mainly by unprotected sex. Nigerians should use condoms, be faithful to their partners, go for screening periodically and take vaccination, if need be.

  • How to keep your man

    How to keep your man

Men want love as badly as women do. Most especially Lagos men. They just might not always be as obvious about it. But generally, they want the same thing: friendship, companionship, chemistry. So why is there so much confusion and miscommunication between the sexes?

Rules. Some have been handed down through the generations. Others are ones we “see” to be true. And, of course, there are the ones written from our personal history.

There are some universal rules applying to men that you probably could find inscribed on the walls of caves from long ago. They still ring true today:

    Praise Him

Just like ladies, Men also adore women who shower them with adulation.

    Quit Nagging

Men hate it. Tell them once what you want. You have a 50-50 chance it will be done. Tell them more than that within a 24-hour period and it’s called nagging. Lagos men have little chill, therefore be careful and avoid nagging.

    Crying

Men really hate it. Imagine you finally get him to have a serious talk and you start crying because you don’t like how it’s going. Well, girlfriend, you killed that one. If he ignores your emotions, Finish the talk, and then cry to the dog or whoever.

    Where is this relationship going?

Really? Fine, you have to know what plan he has for the relationship but you don’t have to ask this too early. You don’t have to rush things. You just have to let is flow.

    Food

Feed him! I suppose the cliché rings true. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. They find that women who cook are more sexy and confident than women who do not. Gone are the days of takeout menus. As a man ages, so does his palate. Nothing pleases a man more than a hearty home cooked meal made by the love of his life.

    Be Naughty

Try not to let your sex life become lackluster. Ask him about his ultimate sexual fantasy and play it out. Turn up the fun by turning up the kink. Do something spontaneous like surprising him with sex. Psst. It’s good for both of you. It keeps the connection and relieves stress and tension. He’ll be putty in your hands. Cook a meal for him after and he’ll be so happy he might even cry.

    Be supportive

You should stand by your man through thick and thin, especially when it comes to difficult life decisions. Support him in his decision. No matter how unpleasant it may be, your partner needs your support to help him through the tough times so ensure that you are there for him.

    Show Appreciation

It doesn’t matter how little the effort is, make sure you show appreciation often

     Love

And more love. Tell him. Hug him. Text him. Laugh with him. Leave love notes in the bathroom or in his car. All the time. You’ll get it back in spades. It’s contagious and it keeps the special spark glowing bright.

However Nigerian Youtuber Adefolake reveal ways to keep a man in Lagos. See video below:
