‘Brokers can generate S1m in Lagos’

Brokers can make about $1 million yearly in Lagos State, Mr. Gboyega Olanbiwoninu, Head, Business Development, Scib Nigeria & Co. Limited, a firm of Insurance Brokers, has said.

A report from the National Insurance Commission (NIACOM) said   insurance premium stood at N318 billion (or $1.1 million) last year.

He spoke on the sideline of a summit on insurance companies by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) and the Lagos State Safety Commission to keep Lagos safe and grow the insurance sector.

Olanbiwoninu underscored the role of insurance in developed economies, noting that in most developed economies, every aspect of life is insured. He recalled his experience in Switzerland where a compulsory students’ insurance was undertaken.

The modest premium of about $1 million, observers say, is as a result of the non-compliance with Insurance Act 2003 by the over 22 population in Lagos and the non-implementation of the relevant aspects of the law by the government.

He noted that that compliance with the law would grow the sector.

Olanbiwoninu said the the 2003 Insurance Act covers third party motor insurance liability, occupiers liability, health insurance, protection of life against building collapse and fire outbreak.

He advised Lagos to take advantage of her huge population and encourage the growth of the sector. He commended the state government for empowering the state Safety Commission to ensure the safety of lives and property by insisting that all aspect of existence in the state is henceforth insured.

According to him, about 60 car accidents happen daily in Lagos and on several occasions people resort to fisticuffs because they have no insurstate to go ahead with the planned implementation of the compulsory insurance scheme stressing that it will ensure the state is enlisted as one of the safest cities to live in the world as almost every aspect of every residents life will be insured.

Olanbiwoninu also said the implementation will further help to grow the industries contribution to GDP which is currently at an abysmal level of about 0.8 per cent.

He said: “The low contribution of insurance GDP may not be unconnected with the apathy shown to Insurance products by the insuring public whilst other reasons adduced to this include lack of awareness and demonstrated value. The compulsory Insurances have the potential of increasing the current gross income of the Insurance Industry by about 52 per cent at full implementation

“It is instructive to note that the joint task force between NIA and NCRIB set up towards the implementation of the Compulsory Insurance have put in place marketing campaigns to enlighten the Insuring public as well as present value in terms of records of claims payment, he added”.

Fed Govt begins repair of roads, bridges in Lagos

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mr Godwin Eke, yesterday said major roads and bridges in Lagos State were undergoing emergency and remedial repairs.

Eke, in an interview in Lagos, said some bad roads required urgent attention and that the Federal Government was determined to make all federal roads in Lagos and across the nation motorable.

He said some of the roads have been completed while others were still undergoing repairs.

He explained that remedial works on both carriageways of Apongbon Bridge undulations had since been completed, noting that, speed was achieved on the project because the contractors worked at night.

He listed ongoing emergency repair projects to include, repairs on Ijora Causeway, Ijora Flyover (East Link), Funsho Williams Avenue, replacement of 1 N  expansion joint on Eko Bridge, Costain Roundabout to Eko Bridge Ramp and Costain to Iganmu Bridge (Orile Bound).

Others projects are: Funsho Williams Bridge to Alaka, Carter Bridge Roundabout to LAWMA Junction (Eko Bridge Bound Carriageway), Herbert Macaulay Way (Jibowu Junction to Adekunle Junction) and Outer Marina to Ahmadu Bellow way (From Apongbon Bridge to Bonny Camp).

Also listed were Falomo Roundabout through Kingsway Road to Osbourne Road, Apapa Road to Western Avenue (Between Iganmu Bridge Ramp and Western Avenue Bridge Ramp (Alaka Bound Carriageway), Apapa Road towards Iganmu Bridge (Orile Bound) which were receiving attention.

Eke said Ijora Olopa to Ijora7Up (Beside Oloye Nursery and Primary School (Ijora Olopa Bound), Alaka to Apongbon through Eko Bridge (both carriageways), Onikan Junction through Independent Bridge to Apongbon Bridge (Apongbon Bound) were undergoing repairs.

According to him, Lagos Island/General Hospital to Apongbon, Onikan/Lagos Island to Apongbon through Apongbon Bridge/CMS (CMS Bound), Eko Bridge Approach to Ijora, Ijora to Apapa Road through underneath Iganmu Flyover (Costain Bound) and National Theatre Train Station to Costain (Costain Bound) were being worked upon.

He said government was working on concluding plans for other roads not yet captured and appealed to residents of Lagos “to be patient with government” as the repairs would soon reach other roads.

“Due to paucity of funds government cannot repair all the roads at the same time,” he said.

The controller said that Apapa Oshodi/Tin Can Island Road was undergoing procurement and that government was also planning permanent reconstruction of roads on the Apapa/Tin Can Island/Oshodi Road corridor  to reduce gridlock/congestion to the barest minimum.

“We will carry out some palliatives as soon as the procurement process is concluded.

“The high water table in Apapa requires proper design  and adoption of rigid pavement to ensure longevity of our roads,” Eke said.

  • Lawmakers vs Lagos: A law against the law

The lawmakers in Abuja seem eager to stir trouble. Professor Itse Sagay has put their feet to the fire over their emperor’s salaries. They are still wining over it. Chidi Odinkalu has exposed a tyrant’s law they are cooking over NGOs. This page will address that soon. Now, amidst calls for restructuring, they are trying to interfere with settled law over tourism, and they are duelling Nigeria’s iconic state, Lagos.

It’s impunity at work when lawmakers want to upturn what the Supreme Court has ruled upon. It has upheld the 2003 and 2009 hotels licensing laws passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly. There are many things wrong with what is going on in the centre. One, the federal agency is trying to eat where it did not sow. Lagos has made money with ingenious tax policy, which is helping to fuel the work alpha Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is doing.

Two, the licensing law of tourism affects hotels and associated businesses, and it is within the purview of the state to reap what it flowers and protects. Three, the federal tourism agency sued Lagos over this matter, and the Supreme Court ruled in Lagos’ favour. Four, the lawmakers want to torpedo the constitution by making a law against the law. That would be a fakery of a tour de force for tourism. They had seen the real tour de force Lagos has pulled off with its revenue.

Five, the Supreme Court ruled for federalism, hence Lagos passed the law. The centre is acting against the grain. Six, the constitution distinguishes between exclusive and concurrent lists. Exclusive belongs to Federal. Licensing hotels is concurrent.

This is illiteracy of impunity and impunity of legalism. It cannot stand.

  • Fed Govt begins repairs on its roads in Lagos

The Federal Government has begun emergency and remedial repair of some major roads and bridges in Lagos State, the Federal Controller of Works for Lagos, Mr Godwin Eke, said yesterday.

Eke told reporters in Lagos that some of the bad roads required urgent attention and that the Federal Government was determined to make its roads across the country motorable.

He said the repairs on some roads had been completed while others were ongoing.

The controller noted that remedial work on the carriageways of Apongbon Bridge undulations had been completed.

According to him, the repairs were completed speedily because the contractors worked at night.

Eke identified the emergency repair projects as those on Ijora Causeway, Ijora Flyover (East Link), Funsho Williams Avenue, replacement of 1 N (one number) expansion joint on Eko Bridge, Costain Roundabout to Eko Bridge Ramp and Costain to Iganmu Bridge (Orile Bound).

Others are: Funsho Williams Bridge to Alaka, Carter Bridge Roundabout to LAWMA Junction (Eko Bridge Bound Carriageway), Herbert Macaulay Way (Jibowu Junction to Adekunle Junction) and Outer Marina to Ahmadu Bellow way (From Apongbon Bridge to Bonny Camp).

Also affected are: Falomo Roundabout through Kingsway Road to Osbourne Road, Apapa Road to Western Avenue (between Iganmu Bridge ramp and Western Avenue Bridge ramp (Alaka-bound carriageway), Apapa Road towards Iganmu Bridge (Orile-bound) which were receiving attention.

Eke said Ijora Olopa to Ijora-7Up (beside Oloye Nursery and Primary School (Ijora Olopa-bound), Alaka to Apongbon through Eko Bridge (both carriageways) and Onikan Junction through Independent Bridge to Apongbon Bridge (Apongbon-bound) were undergoing repairs.

According to him, the following roads – Lagos Island/General Hospital to Apongbon, Onikan/Lagos Island to Apongbon through Apongbon Bridge/CMS (CMS Bound), Eko Bridge approach to Ijora, Ijora to Apapa Road through underneath Iganmu flyover (Costain-bound) and the National Theatre train station to Costain (Costain-bound) – are being worked on.

Eke said the government was working assiduously to conclude plans for other roads not yet captured.

The controller urged Lagos State residents to be patient with the government as the repairs would soon reach those roads not earlier captured.

He said: “Due to paucity of funds, government cannot repair all the roads at the same time.”

The controller said the bids for the repair of Apapa Oshodi/Tin Can Island Road was passing through the procurement process, adding that government was planning to rebuild the network of roads on the Apapa/Tin Can Island/Oshodi Road corridor to reduce congestion to the barest minimum.

He added: “We will carry out some palliatives as soon as the procurement process is concluded.

“The high water table at Apapa requires proper design and adoption of rigid pavement to ensure longevity of our roads.”

•Burial today at Lagos Central Mosque

The Chief Imam of Lagos State, Sheikh Garuba Akinola Ibrahim (Gana V) died yesterday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja. He will be buried today at the Lagos Central Mosque, Idumota.

He died at about 3pm after a brief illness.

He was 79. Sheikh Ibrahim would be 80 in December.

Bashorun of Lagos Alhaji Sikiru Alabi Macfoy and Chief Mufasir of Lagos Sheikh Tijani Gbajabiamila, confirmed his demise in a chat with The Nation.

“As we speak, his remains are being transported from LASUTH to Lagos Island. I am going for a meeting at the Lagos Central Mosque now, I will speak with you later,” Alhaji Macfoy said.

Sheikh Gbajabiamila said: “It is true that the Chief Imam is dead. He died at LASUTH this afternoon. Arrangement is on to bring his remains to the Island.”

The late Chief Imam was survived by a wife and nine children.

At 63, he was decorated with turban and presented with staff of office as the 9th Chief Imam of Lagos on July 30, 2000 following the demise of his predecessor, the late Alhaji Liadi Alade Ibrahim, (OBE), in 1998.

He was honoured with Order of the Niger (OON) by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2009.

The late Sheikh Ibrahim had lost three of his four wives.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode expressed sadness over the Chief Imam’s death.

In a condolence message by his Chief Press Secretary Habib Aruna, the governor described the Imam’s death as a great loss to the Muslim Community, the state and the country.

He said the late cleric would be sorely missed and remembered for his bold and courageous sermons which stood him out.

He said: “It is with deep sense of great loss but total submission to the will of God that I note the demise of the Chief Imam of our dear state, Alhaji Garuba Akinola Ibrahim. He was indeed a respected cleric who was always mindful of his integrity and used his sermons to engender positive changes.

“He was a devout Muslim; humanist and bridge builder and will be remembered for his fairness, boldness and thought-provoking sermons.

“On behalf of my family and the people of Lagos State, I specially commiserate with the immediate family of the deceased and the Muslim Community for this great and irreparable loss.”

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) Director Prof Ishaq Lakin Akintola said the late Chief Imam was highly respected and God-fearing.

“We’ll miss him. He was close to all Islamic groups and find time to attend their function or delegate his second-in-command. He does not look down on people,” he said.

Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer Jaiz Zakat and Waqf Trust Fund Imam Abdullah Shuaib, said the late Sheikh Ibrahim was an amiable person.

“He was an advocate of peaceful co-existence among all religious groups in the state. He encouraged Muslim youths and supported them to be the best. He cherished knowledge and encouraged many to acquire it so as to add value to humanity.

“It is sad that his demise came at a time when Lagosians and Nigerians are expecting to tap from his wealth of wisdom and knowledge to move the nation forward. May Allah overlook his shortcomings and grant him paradise,” Imam Shuaib said.

President, Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit, Dr. Saheed Ashafa, described him as a worthy leader.

“The Muslim students in Lagos State sympathise with the Muslim Community on the loss of our father, His Eminence, Sheikh Garuba Akinola Ibrahim. We pray that Allah forgives him and grant him Al-Janat ul-Firdaus.

“He was indeed an epitome of unity for the Nigerian Muslims and a worthy father for all. He would be remembered for keeping Muslims together in the state and beyond.

“Although, the vacuum he left behind may appear difficult to fill but his legacy would create a source of guidance for the Muslim community.”

Ashafa urged other Islamic leaders to emulate the deceased, saying that his promotion of unity was outstanding

  • Tanker drivers warn of fuel scarcity in Lagos

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) of National Union of Petroleum and Gas Workers (NUPENG), yesterday warned of artificial scarcity of petroleum products, if the Lagos State Government implements its ban of articulated and petroleum tankers from Lagos roads.

The government, on Friday, ordered all tankers and trailers to – for the meantime – keep off the roads and stop at Ojodu Berger, the outskirts of the state, to enable it solve the traffic congestion in the metropolis, as a result of tankers parking at Apapa, which had stretched up to Ikorodu Road.

PTD National Chairman Comrade Salimon Oladiti while expressing shock at the “sudden  blanket order by the state government to stop all trucks and petroleum tankers from entering the state,” said his members are not responsible for the intractable traffic in the state.

In a statement by his Public Relations Officer Comrade Atanda Adebayo, Oladiti said the traffic logjams are caused by the activities of articulated trailer drivers as they access all the ports in the Apapa and Tin Can area.

He advised that any action that may affect the activities of petroleum tanker drivers should be discussed at “a roundtable because of the sensitive nature of the service they render to the public.”

Oladiti said the union is ready at all times to “cooperate with the government on issues affecting the masses and the economy of the state.”

According to him, the gridlock at Apapa is not caused by members of the petroleum tankers but by articulated truck drivers going into various wharfs in Apapa and Tin Can Ports.

Oladiti, who said the bad roads affects his members by obstructing them from accessing depots to load petroleum products, noted that many of his members from all over the country, often spend close to two weeks under harsh conditions before getting to depots to load petroleum products.

He urged the governor to among other places, visit Coconut Bus Stop on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, “which has become a death trap.” He assured of the readiness of his members to assist the government to address the traffic logjam at Apapa.
