  • Lagos pilgrims leave Medina for Mecca

Lagos pilgrims leave Medina for Mecca

Lagos State Pilgrims will today leave the city of Medina to Mecca in preparation for the Hajj rites.

Commissioner for Home Affairs and Amirul Hajj, Dr Abdulhakeem Abdullateef, said this yesterday in a statement by his Media Assistant, Olalekan Murisiku.

According to Dr Abdullateef, the pilgrims numbering 460 were the first batch of pilgrims airlifted to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia last Sunday.

He said: “Every pilgrim is expected to be in Medina for eight days before going to Mecca. The movement from Medina to Mecca is also going to be in batches for convenience.

“The pilgrims have dropped their main luggage contained in four trucks, for onward movement to Mecca while human transportation scheduled for tomorrow (today).”

The Amirul Hajj noted that the short stay in Medina had provided the pilgrims the opportunity to perform numerous spiritual activities such as praying, including Jumat Service at Masjid Nabawi (Prophet Mosque), Visit to the Prophet’s grave and that of his Caliphs (Abubakar and Umar).

They have also visited historic places such as Masjid Quba (where each Solaat offered is equivalent to lesser Hajj), Masjid Qiblataen (the Mosque with two Prayer directions), Mount Hud among other notable sites.

The pilgrims, he said, will also have the opportunity to learn Arabic and the Quran in Saudi Arabia.

“We have assigned all the clerics that will be travelling with us the responsibility of teaching their pilgrims how to read the Quran while in hajj.  We intend to organise a graduation party within the few days they are spending in Saudi Arabia,” he said.

He appealed to the pilgrims not to hold items on behalf of any other pilgrim, reminding them that the punishment for drug trafficking in the Middle East is death.

He said: “Drugs could be hidden in onions, dry red chilies, drink cans and other unsuspecting items.

“This year we have improved our method of allocating rooms to pilgrims, the usual tension of where will I stay, has been settled. Pilgrims have been given the opportunity to select who they intend to live with right from Nigeria and their room numbers have been distributed to them right from Nigeria, so, no pilgrim will take off from Nigeria without knowing his or her room number in Saudi Arabia. This is the first time we are doing that to ensure the ease of performing hajj is enhanced. For the very first time, they know their room number and the names of the people who will occupy the room are with them and also pasted on the door.”

  • We’ll make abductors of Lagos school boys give up arms, says Akeredolu

We’ll make abductors of Lagos school boys give up arms, says Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) said yesterday that he would work to ensure ttat the abductors of Lagos school boys dropped their arms.

He also confirmed that he promised the kidnappers of  inclusion in the Federal Government amnesty programme.

He spoke in an interview programme on an Ibadan-based radio, Fresh FM at the weekend.

Akeredolu explained that as soon as the Federal Government hinted him that the children were hidden somewhere in the creeks of Ondo State, he assigned his deputy, who hailed from a riverine area of the state, to find means of opening discussions with the abductors.

On successfully establishing contact with them after risking his life, the governor recalled that he joined in the discussion to know the motive of the abductors.

According to him, the militants complained that they were excluded in the amnesty programme launched for all militants in the Niger Delta.

Akeredolu said he promised them that he would  intimate the Federal Government of the need to include them in the programme. He said the government did not pay ransom to secure their release.

The governor said he, however, made them realise the danger of criminality.

He said the militants expressed trust in his administration to right the wrongs of the past.

“My deputy did a yeoman’s job and started a discussion with the abductors. We made them realise that they may have their problem with the government but we told them that we will report that to the Federal Government. People repose a lot of trust in our government. They have implicit trust in us. The young boys (kidnappers) have trust in us. We promised them we would persuade the Federal Government to include them in the amnesty programme.  We did not pay any ransom. We will work with the Federal Government to make them surrender their arms,” Akeredolu said.

Akeredolu also acknowledged that there is division in the All Progressives Congress (APC), pointing out that the party is so big that all members can not always agree. He stressed that it is part of the beauty of democracy.

He also denied working as one of President Muhammadu Buhari’s boys in Southwest, saying he is not a boy to anybody.

  • Lagos bans use of Okada to convey beef

Lagos State Government has banned the use of motorbikes popularly known as ‘Okada’ and ‘Air Cool Vans’ for transportation of meat and meat product in all abattoir and slaughter slabs.

This, the government, said was to ensure a well-structured meat transporting system which befits the status of a mega city.

Commissioner for Agriculture Oluwatoyin Suarau who made this known  at the stakeholders meeting with representatives of the Lagos state Butchers Association, Eko Refrigerated Meat Van Association, Apapa Park transporter and the Sheep and Goat Butchers Association noted that only the authorised ‘Refrigerated Meat Vans’ are allowed in the business of transporting meat within the state.

“Anyone who transport meat product using other means other than the authorized refrigerated meat vans will have their meat seized. The ‘air cool van’ which was earlier introduced in 2008 has been faced out and must not operate within the state again”, he said.

The government, he said, will not relent to stop unwholesome transportation of meat.

Suarau warned against carrying of meat products in polythene bags and unauthorised vehicles adding that government has zero tolerance for ‘Okada’ operations within the premises of abattoirs and slaughter slabs and thus directed that all owners of ‘Okada’ should vacate the premises of the abattoirs and slaughter slabs immediately.

He stated further that the Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance Unit on dislodgement of illegal abattoirs, seizure of stray animal, monitoring of illegal meat transportation and regulation of veterinary premises will commence enforcement of the ban on operations of motorcycles and air cool vans within the premises of the abattoirs and slaughter slabs in the State.

Suarau stated that the government will provide more refrigerated meat vans for effective transportation of meat in the state.

“The state has a model which is aimed at ensuring a healthy and hygienic transportation of meat within the state. I therefore urge all to give maximum support to government in the implementation of these policies”, he said.

Suarau explained that the since the inception of the present administration, policies and programmes aimed at changing the face of abattoirs and slaughter slabs have been embarked. He added that apart from upgrade of facilities and infrastructure of abattoirs and slaughter slabs, the government has also trained butchers and live cattle dealers drawn from various abattoirs and slaughter slabs in the State on current trends in abattoir management.

Police detain two personnel for reckless shooting

The Nigeria Police Force says it has detained and tried two of its personnel in orderly room for alleged reckless shooting in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that a video in circulation on social media showed two policemen allegedly shooting into the air on the street in a moving vehicle in Lagos.

The Head of Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit ( PCRRU), ACP Abayomi Shogunle, told NAN that following complaints by members of the public, the case was immediately registered by the unit.

“On Aug. 1, PCRRU was notified about a video in circulation on social media in which some men alleged to be policemen were seen shooting in the air on the street in a moving vehicle,” Shogunle said.

He said that the Commissioner of police in charge of Police Mobile Force ( PMF ) at the Force Headquarters, had identified the men following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police.

Shogunle said that the incident happened on July 31 at 5 p.m. along the Murtala Mohammed International Airport road in Lagos.

He explained that the two policemen who were attached to the 20 Police Mobile Force Squadron, and were attached to a private security company, Infinity Security Company.

Shogunle said that a popular Nigerian Musician, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, engaged them to provide escort for him to his house while returning from abroad.

” Along the way as seen in the video which has been confirmed from investigation, the two policemen involved started shooting into the air for no just cause.

“They have been identified and they have been in detention since then because investigation was conducted and after that they have been tried in orderly room and punishment has been recommended.

“We are only waiting for the appropriate police authority to review the punishment then we will make the full details known to the public.

“One thing is clear that the conduct of those policemen as seen in that video is unacceptable, that is not part of what our officers should be engaged in.

” They are no longer involved in any duty where they will carry any weapon. They will be in detention until the process is over before they will be released.

“Investigation has shown that they have no justifiable reason to have expended or fire their weapons into the air,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shogunle has assured members of the public that officers dismissed for corruption would also be prosecuted in court in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s directive.

“Apart from dismissal, we are also going to see the prosecution of such unethical officers in the court of law, “he said.

  • Lagos to host first Nigeria Beer Festival

To stimulate its economic and tourism potentials, the Lagos State government is set to host the maiden edition of the “Nigeria Beer Festival” from September 25 to October 1, 2017.

The Lagos State government is collaborating with beer brewers in the country and their counterparts across the globe to create maximum excitement during the week-long fiesta that will climax with the Independence Day Mega Concert to commemorate Nigeria’s independence.

The   festival, which will promote responsible drinking among drinking-age (which is 18 years and above) consumers at all its touch points, will be held at the Lagos Atlantic City to give it a carnival atmosphere from day one to the very last second. It will be a gathering of the largest community of beer consumers from across the country and beyond.

The organisers of the Nigeria Beer Festival, On and One Event (001) Limited, said that the Lagos State government, which is passionate about tourism, will provide massive institutional support, particularly security, transport and related logistics.

The event, according to the organisers, will see Nigeria enrol into the league of Beer Festivals around the world, and boost the country’s tourism opportunities.

Akinola Oluwaleimu, General Manager of 001, revealed that the world-acclaimed Oktoberfest (Beer Festival) in Munich attracts more than 50,000 tourists to Germany every year, while other countries in Europe and the Americas have caught the bug.

“Nigeria Beer Festival will be a carnival week of entertainment, sales and marketing and a gathering of the largest community of beer consumers from across the country and beyond with economic value for the brands and the economy at large,” Oluwaleimu assured.

The Nigeria Beer Festival will provide a fitting ambience to showcase fashion and lifestyle, as well as culture in a carnival atmosphere with various beer brands and other alcoholic drinks in Nigeria connecting with their existing and potential consumers.

This culture touch point is in line with the view of social scientists that that beer is among the symbolic vehicles for identifying, describing, constructing and manipulating cultural values and interpersonal relationships. They classify different alcoholic beverages in terms of their social and cultural meanings.

Historians submit that Beer has always been popular – since times of ancient Babylon and Greece, Mesopotamia and Egypt and is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the fifth millennium BC.

Anthropologists and archaeologists also believe that it was a taste for beer, not bread that started the cultivation of barley in around 9000BC, known as the agricultural revolution. Beer didn’t just change the world; historians insist it saved it!

Meanwhile, partners of the forthcoming Nigeria Beer Festival are also assured of world-standard facilities as the organisers of the Nigeria Beer Festival have partnered with reputable and qualified architects from Europe to design modular stands to fit into any shape or style desired by exhibitors.

Oluwaleimu said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is expected to close the festival during the Independence Day Mega Concert that will parade an array of A-list Nigerian artistes, which will feature eye-popping fireworks display.

  • School graduates first set

History was made in Gabsolarose Schools, one of the prominent private schools in Ejigbo, Lagos State, when it graduated its first set of pupils penultimate week.

The event was attended by a large numbers of parents and friends from far and near who came to felicitate with the graduands and the school.

Speaking at the ceremony, proprietress of the school, Mrs Roseline Omotola Shobande, counseled the graduands to be worthy ambassadors of the school and goal getters.

Shobande said it was not enough to set goals, saying the graduands must imbibe the spirit of decision making, faith, commitment, perseverance and prayers as watchwords  to accomplish their goals.

“The path to achieving goal is fraught with boredom, excuse and difficulty. You’ll have a lot of opportunities to talk yourself out of the goal. But if you can keep going back to the reason and your desire for the goal, those will help you stay on track”, she said.

In his address, chairman of the occasion, Pastor Anthony Shokoya who also chairs the school’s Parents-Teachers Association, PTA, said, the school is committed to helping every child achieve their fullest potentials academically, creatively, socially, physically and spiritually.

Shokoya described the proprietress as a woman of substance with a strong sense of discipline, humility, honesty and transparency in running the school.

“This is my fourth year as chairman of PTA of the school. I am highly impressed with the manner the proprietress is handling the school.

“We will continue to do our best to help the school become great because the proprietress is transparent to the parents, therefore we will all join hands with her to move the school to a greater height”, Shokoya promised.

Also, a special guest of honour, Dr Anuoluwapo Popoola, said that the standard of education in Nigeria was not as bad as many think, especially when it comes to private education.

She said Nigeria’s population was too large for government institutions to manage alone without private sector support.

“Although there are bad eggs among private schools in Nigeria, I have seen a couple of private schools who are matching up with developed world standard of education. And at the same time, the population is too large; government schools alone cannot accommodate all. So of course, there is a need for private schools to provide education for those that government school cannot take”, Popoola said.

  • Lassa fever: Lagos urges calm as three test positive

Lassa fever: Lagos urges calm as three test positive

fficials confirmed yesterday three more cases of  Lassa fever in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial and business honeypot.

But the state government urged residents not to panic as it is on top of the situation.

Two persons infected with the disease have died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH),  Idi-Araba. A resident doctor who participated in the autopsy on the cases got infected.

Yesterday, three of the 100 people being traced in connection with the treatment of the cases were declared positive after tests.

The three, like the doctor, are being treated at the hospital’s isolation ward.

Four people were quarantined for clinical analysis in Yobe State, according to Commissioner for Health  Dr Bello Kawuwa.

Kawuwa told reporters in Damaturu that seven people were initially hospitalised, but three had been discharged after clinical analyses.

The commissioner said though earlier results did not indicate that the four people had Lassa fever, a second laboratory test would be carried out on them.

“We will let you know when the result of the second laboratory test is released.

“We have isolated the cases to prevent unnecessary contact.

“Our epidemic response team has also gone to the affected communities to carry out contact-tracing as well as enlighten the people on how to deal with the situation,” Kawuwa said.

In a statement, the government of Lagos State urged residents not to panic, as the state and the Federal Government were doing everything possible to control the spread of the diseases.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Primary Health Care, Dr. Olufemi Onanuga, who issued the statement, added that the Ministry of Health, in line with international standards, ”is currently carrying out ‘contact tracing’ to determine those who may have been infected. Isolation centres have been prepared to manage suspected and confirmed cases while drugs and other materials have also been prepositioned at designated facilities.”

The Special Adviser confirming five cases of the disease, said two deaths had been recorded, noting that the remaining three patients were responding to treatment in designated isolation centres.

The first case of the disease; a 32-year-old woman with bleeding complications of pregnancy, died at LUTH on July 25 and had a post-mortem examination performed  on July 27  with the result of viral studies coming out positive for Lassa fever on July 29.

“The second case, a known sickle cell disease patient, died on the 5th of August, also at LUTH. He was said to have travelled to one of the neighboring states before coming down with the disease. The two cases have since been buried in line with prescribed international standards,” Onanuga said.

The Special Adviser added that three health workers who developed symptoms had tested positive and on admission receiving treatment in an isolation ward in LUTH.

Onanuga said the laboratory tests on two other suspected cases at Mainland Hospital referred from General Hospital, Lagos and a private hospital in Imota were negative.

He stressed the need for residents to maintain personal and environmental hygiene at all times as part of the precautionary measures to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

Onanuga advised the public to avoid contact with rats, to always cover their food and water properly, cook food thoroughly and block all hideouts and holes through which rats can enter the house.

LUTH’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof Chris Bode said: “Out of the 100 people on contact tracing, three persons who developed symptoms tested positive and have been on admission and receiving treatment in the isolation Ward in the hospital.”

Bode said there were no emergency cases of Lassa fever at LUTH but each of the two cases that were reported in the hospital were diagnosed and managed in other facilities before they were referred to LUTH.

He said the infected were being cared for by a corps of professional and volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists. microbiologists, epidemiologists, emotional care givers, cleaners and others round the clock.

Bode said: “There is no panic; the Lassa fever disease is being contained and all the stakeholders are working hard to make sure that it doesn’t spread.

“However, we should all be involved collectively and individually to stop further spread of this disease.

“I urge us to prevent our food items from being contaminated by rats and rat droppings and urine.

“Do not spread your food outside in the open; put food items in rat proof containers so that rats will not get access to the food.’’.

The chief medical director also said that personal and environment hygiene were critical measures against Lassa fever.

”The disease is being contained and efforts are ongoing to locate the sources of these occurrences and to effectively monitor those who have been exposed to any of these cases,’’ he said.

The President of ARD, LUTH, Dr Adebayo Sekunmade, said that the management of the hospital was managing the situation.

“Some resident doctors volunteered to treat those 100 people under surveillance but we want the management to handle the situation more carefully.”

  • Lagos set to recover 100 assets sold illegally

Lagos set to recover 100 assets sold illegally

The Lagos State government may seize under-valued properties allegedly sold illegally and prosecute defaulters.

The Nation learnt that the government is set to implement a far-reaching report on the sale of such assets. The report is said to contain a list of over 100 properties, the names of their buyers and the locations of the assets.

Sources disclosed that the report  was arrived at after extensive lasting several months by a panel of inquiry set up in late 2016 by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to “investigate the sale of its assets in prime areas running into billions of Naira”.

The source, who does not want her identity revealed due to the sensitivity of the issue, said the government decided to investigate the sale of its assets because they were sold below market value.

According to the source, the loss ran into billions of Naira.

She said: “The affected assets are located in high-profile areas, where decision-makers, captains of industries, top government functionaries and political actors among others often crave to build their homes and offices.”

She identified the areas where the assets are to include Ikeja GRA, Magodo, Ikoyi, Lekki and other prime locations.

She explained that the assets were disposed at abysmal (or give-away) prices and obviously against public interest, which in her words, stoked the interest of the present administration to investigate and review the process by which the assets were sold.

She disclosed that what eventually culminated in the resolve of the State government to investigate the sale of its assets was overriding public interest, lamenting that some of these assets “were sold as low as N20 million.”

She added: “Generally, we have a situation where government properties in prime locations were sold at give-away prices. The assets were abysmally under-valued. Besides, the assets were sold below the actual market value”

The Nation gathered that government took an exception to such transaction, stating that no serious government would allow such sales against public interest to stand.

It was further gathered the report had indeed been submitted and implementation had begun with review of sales of properties that were sold grossly under market value.

In one of the test cases under review, it was discovered that two wings of a       five bedroom semi detached house located around Ikeja GRA valued at hundreds of millions of Naira was in 2010 offered to Funmi Smith of Debam Mega Solutions Limited for a sum far less than half of the value, but seven years after the offer barely half of the offered sum has been paid to the State Government coffers by the Company.

It was reliably gathered that as part of the report’s recommendations, the State Government has been advised to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unravel several other transactions that have been identified by the panel of inquiry.
