Lagos @50: Winner emerges in Spot N Post campaign

A winner has emerged in the Spot N Post campaign, a private engagement initiative to celebrate Lagos @50, organised by Abelinis Limited, a Lagos-based experiential company. The campaign, which started in May, required Lagosians to spot a car branded in the colours of the Lagos @50 festivities, take a picture with it and post on social media. The respondent with the highest number of likes emerges winner.

At the end of the viral competition, Seun Oloketuyi, a media entrepreneur, got the most likes. Last Thursday, Oloketuyi was presented with a prize of N100,000 at the Ogba, Lagos office of Abelinis Limited.

Deji Orunkoyi, general manager of the company, said the campaign was initiated to join Lagos in celebrating its Golden Jubilee.

“Lagos is a land of dreams and as a company doing business here, we thought to give back in our little way. We looked at the line up of activities and came up with this idea to ensure Lagosians across local governments felt the joy of the landmark celebrations. We toured 20 local governments and are glad at the responses,” Orunkoyi said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Abelinis, Abiodun Oshinibosi, added that the Spot N Post campaign was basically his company’s corporate social responsibility initiative. According to him, “employing our expertise and experience as an experiential company with a track record of successful activations, we bought the car, branded it and toured the state without seeking or getting any support from the government. We are happy with the response and are further committed to contributing our quota to the development of Lagos State.”

Established in 2011 as a project management company with interests in events, activation and production, Abelinis Limited has entrenched a culture of philanthropy in the heart of its corporate social responsibility. Last year, through one of its initiatives, Fanz Championship Africa, the company built a borehole at Amuwo Odofin Primary School, renovated the school’s abandoned toilet facilities and donated a generator for the borehole. When it turned five in 2016, the management and workers of Abeinis visited the Area G Police Station, Ogba, Lagos, to donate food items and cheques to support the education of children of deceased policemen. Prior to this, it paid school fees for selected undergraduates, donated Apple laptops to some identified creative youths, visited the Modupe Cole and Ijamido orphanage homes to support the less privileged.

It also presented a phototherapy machine and top-of-the-range incubator to the Ifako and Ijebu Ode general hospitals to reduce Infant Mortality Rate (IMR).

Earlier this year, during the company’s sixth anniversary, it gave four police widows N50,000 cash and 50,000 worth of VTU each to start a retail vending spot.

  • Flood: Lagos to demolish properties blocking drainage

Flood: Lagos to demolish properties blocking drainage

The Lagos State Government yesterday ordered owners of properties blocking drainage channels to remove them or have the demolished.

In a statement yesterday, the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, said the lawless activities of some people were constantly putting the lives and properties of residents at risk.

Some areas where properties are erected on drainage channels include Illubirin, Dolphin Estate, Osborne Foreshore Estate, Ikoyi, Osapa London, Ikota, Ogombo, Lekki. The commissioner said investment of public funds in drainage clearing and de-silting was being compromised by such structures.

The government, he said, was concerned that man-made causes, particularly the impediment of free-flow of storm water through indiscriminate erection of buildings on drainage alignments/ right of way and water courses, played a major role in the recent flooding in the state.

“Therefore, it is now of paramount importance that owners of buildings or structures impeding the free-flow of storm water, wherever they exist in the state, are advised to voluntarily quit forthwith in the overriding public interest or risk being removed by the government. No responsible government will allow the interest of a few to jeopardise the wellness and wellbeing of the generality of its people.

“In view of the grievous consequences of compromising drainage right of way and alignment, Lagosians are hereby warned to henceforth refrain from this illegal act, report perpetrators and cooperate with the Lagos State Government in its bid to achieve a flood-free, clean and livable state,” Adejare said.

The government, he said, has resolved to re-establish the right of way of drainage infrastructure across the state to stem the tide of flooding.

The commissioner said the decision became necessary to enhance the ability of the drainage channels to effectively discharge storm water into the rivers, lagoon and other water bodies and relieve Lagosians of the incidence of flood.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Lagosians are once again reminded that the right of way for primary unlined (without concrete) channel is 25 meters and 15 meters for primary lined (with concrete) channel, while the right of way for secondary/connector channel is seven meters. The right of way for tertiary channel is three meters from the fence of the house.

“Primary channels such as canals are those emptying directly into the river, lagoons and other water bodies, while secondary/connector channels connect water from channels in the frontage of the house (tertiary channels) to the primary channel,” he said.

Osinbajo assures return of kidnapped Lagos school boys

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday assured parents and guardians of the kidnapped Lagos school boys of the safe return of the children.

In a chat with newsmen on the sideline of 60th birthday thanksgiving service of Pastor Salami Ololade in Lagos, Osinbajo said Federal Government was collaborating with the state’s authorities to ensure their safe return.

On May 25, six boys of the same secondary school in Lagos were abducted by unknown gunmen. In the same school, six staff members and four students were also kidnapped in October, 2016.

The acting president acknowledged that the parents must be going through trauma over the abduction of the children, but said “there should be no doubt at all about the commitment of government in the matter’’.

“I don’t know how many times the governor has spoken to me about this and the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, the DSS and even the Armed Forces.

“I am sure these children will return as quickly as possible; so, we look forward to their return,’’ he said.

Osinbajo advised children currently on holidays to learn something new outside academics, saying “because it is a long holiday, it is a great time to do something new.

“Those who like to learn a skill, whatever skill that may be, should learn it. I wished that when I was growing up I learned even carpentry’’.

He said that the children could learn something new that would impact on their lives and their communities in new fields of technology. (NAN)

    ………………………………………………..

Early morning rain on Saturday prevented many voters from coming out to vote in the Lagos council polls in Eredo and Ikotun/Igando Local Council Development Areas.

Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the election, report that there was a low turnout of voters at some polling units.

NAN also observed that there was no presence of security personnel at Ward A Units 2, 7, 8, 10, 16, 18 and 19 in Ilara community as at 9.30 a.m.

However, security men mounted a barricade at the main junction as the Police engaged in stop and search.

An electoral officer in the area attributed the low turnout to the rain, adding that voters may still come out as soon as the rain subsided.

At Ward 037 in Ikotun/Igando LCDA, a few voters, majority of them old people, were at many of the polling units.

Mrs Yemisi Dosunmu, a 57-year- old caterer, told NAN that the apathy by youths was not good for our democracy.

She said it was important for the younger generation to understand the importance of voting.

“I came all the way from Egbe to vote here because this is where I registered when I was living here.

“That is to show you how important this election is to me; our voting age children (youths)  need to understand that they
have the power to elect leaders of their choice.

“As citizens, it is an obligation and our vote is the only power we have against bad governance, the power lies with us; we need to educate our youths,’’ she said.

Also, a 43-year-old engineer, Dauda Ojo, told NAN that the poor turnout showed that people lacked the understanding of their
    voting power.

“Since I started voting, this turnout is one of the poorest, we cannot achieve much if we keep showing apathy towards the
election of office holders,’’ he said.

NAN also reports that some food vendors at Eredo LCDA took advantage of their proximity to the polling units to
    make brisk business.

Meanwhile, Mr Olusoda Adedeji, the Electoral Officer, Eredo LCDA, has assured that the outcome of the election would be
credible in spite of the initial low turnout of voters due to the rainfall.

Adedeji said adequate security and logistics had been put in place in the five wards and 85 units in the area to ensure a hitch-free election with more than 185 personnel deployed for the exercise. (NAN)

  • Downpour, thunderstorm delay take off of council polls

Downpour, thunderstorm delay take off of council polls

Downpour which began at 5a.m. in many parts of Lagos State left many areas flooded and affected early commencement of voting in the local government polls in many areas.

The rain, accompanied with thunderstorms, lasted for more than two hours, confining many residents to their apartments early in the day, until it later subsided.

The flooding of the roads compelled road users to drive against traffic in some areas as people rushed to beat the 7a.m. restriction of movement time.

At the Berger end of Lagos-Ibadan expressway, many motorists trying to get out of Lagos, apart from contending with the rain, were caught up in  the restriction of movement time which took off at 7.ooa.m, causing a heavy traffic gridlock.

In Badagry, only few voters were at some polling units where security personnel, electoral officers and materials were on ground by 8a.m..

At Polling Units 007, 008 and 009 in Ward A, Badagry Local Government, voters were seen by 8a.m, while at Polling Unit 8 in Ward B, few voters got accredited and began voting by 8.25a.m. .

Only two voters were at Polling Unit 007 in Ward D at 8.30am.

Mrs Verona Chike, the Polling Officer in the unit blamed the low turnout on the downpour.

“I am sure that more voters will come out as soon as the rain stops,” she told NAN.

However, in some areas of Ikotun/ Igando Local Council Development Area, electoral officers and materials had yet to arrive as at 9.30a.m, with only agents of political parties at some poling units visited by then.

In Ward B, Unit 005, on Apapa Road, in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, electoral officers arrived at 9.25 a.m. shortly after the rain stopped in the area.

In the Alimosho Local Government,  NAN correspondent reports that the premises of the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat was a beehive of activities as several commercial buses were being still loaded with electoral materials and officials at 9:30 am.

NAN observed that vehicles carrying the materials escorted by security operatives began filing out of the LG compound which doubles as the LASIEC secretariat at 9:45 am.

Mr Bakare Olagoke, the Electoral Officer of the Alimosho Local Government branch of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) told NAN that the rain delayed the process.

“We are leaving now. It is heavy rain and only God saved us that the communication mast did not fall on our office or anyone because the rain was too heavy,” he said.

  • LAGOS STANDS STILL FOR GLO LAFFTA FEST

IT was was a time of fun as telecomounnications giant, Globacom, stormed Victoria Island, Lagos with its Glo Laffta Fest.

The event which held at Eko Hotels and Suites drew established comedians from across Nigeria and Uganda.

Also in attendance were up-and-coming comedians.

Among the audience were distinguished  guests including the Mister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde. Globacom ambassadors such as Funke Akindele, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Adekola Odunlade and songster, Omawumi Megbele, also made celebrity appearances.

The event was the Lagos leg of Glo Laffta Fest 27-city tour and billed to end in October.

The show started with DJ XGee dishing out danceable tunes followed by acts from up-and-coming comedians such as Kemex, MC Medical, Koye from Rock City and the duet act named British Pastors, who thrilled the audience with funny jokes.

This was followed by performances from eight A-list stand-up comedians, Princewill, Frank D Don, Bash d Cash, Arinze Baba, Dan D’Humorous, I go Dye, Gordons and Salvador from Uganda.

Arinze Baba was a delight with his rhythmic music comedy. And a high point of his performance was when he narrated how Igbo musicians had turned Senator Dino Melayé’s Yoruba song, “Ajekun iya ni o je” which went viral on the internet, into Igbo highlife music, even though they did not understand the meaning of the song. He elicited more laughter and thrill when he performed the song in Igbo, with the support of the Disc Jockey.

Other cities that will host the show in the weeks ahead include, Makurdi, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Festac, Ajah, Suleja, Ibadan, Kano, Port Harcourt,  Lokoja, and Anyigba.
