The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lauded the initiative of Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to construct a 50-kilometre road to link coastal communities in the state with Lagos State.

According to a statement signed by Prince Abayomi Adesanya, the state APC Publicity Secretary, on Thursday in Lagos, the party described the project as “laudable and remarkable’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akeredolu had on April 5 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to construct the road.

NAN reports that the road is expected to connect Araromi Seaside in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State with Akodo in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The road is expected to be completed within two and half years.

Adesanya said, “This is laudable and remarkable, because in less than 100 days of the APC-led administration in the state, the governor has attracted such a monumental project to the state.

“The first and only MoU ever signed by NDDC with any state government within its mandate area (the Niger-Delta region).

“The people of Ilaje and the Niger-Delta areas of the state have rolled out drums to thank Akeredolu and NDDC for this laudable stride.’’

“Once this project is completed, the people can now travel to Lagos by road in less than an hour, as against the usual four to five hours being spent through other roads to Lagos,’’ he said.

Adesanya assured the people of the state that more of such laudable projects would be executed by the Akeredolu-led government in the state

A 45-year-old businesswoman, Precious Ofili, who allegedly defrauded a market association of N20 million, was on Thursday charged before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Ofili, who resides in Apapa, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

Police Prosecutor Tony Elibeh told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 6 at Article Market opposite Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.

Elibeh alleged that the accused, who was the treasurer of the association, conspired with others now at large and obtained N20 million from members  on the pretext of lodging the money in the bank.

He claimed that Ofili, who had no intention of keeping the money in the bank, invested it in her business.

The prosecutor said when the association later demanded for its money, the accused gave flimsy excuses.

When the association members got tired of Ofili’s excuses, they reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested, he said.

The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 312 stipulates a 15-year jail term for obtaining by false pretences.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

  • Lagos hands over 200 rent-to-own homes

The Lagos State Government has handed over keys to another set of 200 successful applicants of the Lagos-Rent-To-Own initiative with a promise to sustain the policy in partnership with the private investor.

Its Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal, who presided over the ceremony, said the state has over 4, 000 housing units yet to be subscribed to across various areas of the state.

According to him, the state has already mapped out sustainability strategy such that upon exhausting the available units, partnership collaboration would be ignited with the private sector for another round of 20,000 housing units.

“Beyond any doubt, this state government made 100 residents  house owners in their own rights last month, this month also, another set of 200 home owners have emerged under the initiative. We will continue with this method until the housing deficit in the state is reasonably bridged,” Lawal said.

He disclosed that of the 100 successful allottees last year, 75 of them have moved into their homes and are enjoying their residency. He attributed the increment from last month’s 100 housing units to 200 units this month to increasing demand from applicants, who are desirous of becoming home owners under the scheme.

The Commissioner further disclosed that more windows of opportunities would be opened to more residents as some government housing schemes in Sangotedo, Ajara in Badagry, Igbogbo, Igando Gardens, Egan-Igando, would be completed and made available to Lagosians before the end of the year.

He solicited the support of allottees to assume responsibility for the estates by cooperating with the facilities managers at ensuring that the facilities are put to good use. “Efforts should be geared towards ensuring that the environments are kept clean always. The allottees are to ensure that they pay their rent as at when due and embrace maintenance culture,” he added.

Also, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who was at the event, said with the Rent-To-Own policy, Lagos is on course in addressing the state’s housing deficit.

The Commissioner, who acknowledged the huge housing deficit in the state when compared with others in the country, said the state chose the path of Rent-To-Own to save low and middle income earners the burden of paying for house out rightly.

He said the five per cent commitment fee payment was perhaps the best any state could offer all over the world, adding that testimonials of beneficiaries of the scheme speak volume about the transparent nature of the initiative from the application stage to the handing over of keys.

In his address, the General Manager, Lagos State Mortgage Board, Mr. Dehinde Tunwashe, said the testimonies of some of the first 100 allottees last month were enough evidence to convince people that the Rent-To-Own policy of the state was real and that they should be encouraged to apply, saying, “the handing-over ceremony we are witnessing today will be an event that will go down in the history of Lagos State and generations to come.”

  • FG has no plans to sell National Theatre to Lagos – Lai Mohammed

FG has no plans to sell National Theatre to Lagos – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has no plans to sell the National Art Theatre to the Lagos State Government, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has said.

Mohammed made this known on Tuesday night at a dinner with Nigerian TV and online content developers attending the ongoing MIPTV in Cannes, France.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MIPTV is an annual leading TV and online content development event and the largest global distribution television and digital content market.

The minister who described the Arts Theatre as a national monument, stressed that it was impossible for anyone to sell any asset of government without following the due process and clear cut rules.

He explained that the Lagos government offered to renovate the main bowl of the theatre, two cinema halls, the exhibition lobby and the banquet hall as part of its collaboration with the federal government.

“I want to say it loud and clear that there is no iota of truth in the rumour that we are selling the national theatre to the Lagos state government.

“We do not have the capacity to do so and will never do so.

“What is happening is that we are fortunate to have a governor like Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos who is very passionate about the creative industry.

“The governor decided that he is going to mark the 50th anniversary of Lagos with cultural activities, films, music and he was looking for a befitting venue.

“He now decided to take the opportunity of this 50th anniversary to collaborate with the federal government to revamp the national theatre to use it as a venue for most of the programmes and at the same time laid the foundation for a viral and dynamic creative industry,” he said.

The minister noted that the whole essence of the collaboration for the renovation of the theatre is to ensure that the national asset did not go into ruins.

“The governor is asking for nothing, rather he is foresighted in knowing that a renovated and functional national theatre will be a catalyst for the film industry, theatre art, music.

“He also realised that by revamping the theatre, more young men and women will be able to exhibit their talents and more jobs will be created and more taxes will accrue to Lagos state purse.

“Therefore, for everybody it is a win-win situation and there is no attempt whatsoever to sell any national asset to anybody,” he said

NAN reports that the dinner was hosted by the Director General of National Broadcasting Commission, Modibbo Kawu.

Some of the TV and online content developers at the dinner were, Mr Tajudeen Adepetu the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Soundcity, ONTVand ONMAX, Mr Jason Njoku the CEO of Iroko TV and Ijeoma Onah of Aforevo TV, a French Nollywood Channel.

He said the school authority in collaboration with Parents Teachers Association, Old Girls Association and the Federal Ministry of Education, is speedily addressing identified areas of lapses.

“When the issue came to limelight, the principal denied the case that nothing happened. And after we deployed another principal, it was revealed that the school was in crisis.

He said there was a little lapse on the report filed by the Education Quality Assurance team sent prior to the outbreak. “The report was submitted to the director of that ministry. But the director didn’t pass the report to other department in the ministry for appropriate action.
“Unfortunately, it was this week that I was able to lay my hands on that report. It is a little lapse on our part. But it is procedural issue and when procedure has existed too long, to change it becomes an issue.”
