  • Increase in BRT fares will impoverish us – Lagos residents

Increase in BRT fares will impoverish us – Lagos residents

Some residents of Ikorodu on Wednesday complained that the reviewed transport fares of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) would further impoverish the citizens of Lagos State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The residents told NAN that the increase in fares was untimely, considering the prevailing economic situation in the country.

They appealed to the Lagos State Government to review the transport fares of the various routes to ease the discomfort being experienced by commuters.

NAN further reports that transport fares from Ikorodu to TBS was increased from N200 to N300; Ikorodu to Fadeyi increased from N120 to N200; while Ikorodu to Mile 12 increased from N75 to N100.

A trader, Mrs Adeola Adebiyi, complained that the increase in fares was astronomical.

She said that the increase would not serve the interest of the common man.

“We actually expect the government to be humane in the reviewed price considering that the masses are presently facing a lot of challenges, ranging from increase in prices of food, electricity, house rent and school fees.

“The burden upon us is much. We can barely make ends meet because sales at the market had been low since the beginning of the year, due to low purchasing power of customers.

“We are living from ‘hand to mouth,’ government should help us.

“We understand the concerns of the bus operators pertaining to increase in cost of diesel and maintenance of the buses.

“We appeal that Ikorodu to TBS route be reviewed to N250 instead of N300,” she said.

A civil servant, Mr Kunle Aderogba, advised that transport fare should be subsidised by the government to alleviate the sufferings of the citizens.

“The transport fare of BRT bus is a solace to many low income earners but now that has changed with the reviewed transport fares.

“For years, government has not reviewed the salaries of workers and it has taken a toll on our lifestyle as we have adjusted to our meagre income.

“We urge the government to consider the societal impact of the reviewed fares on the masses and emulate former Gov. Babatunde Fashola, who only reviewed BRT fares upward by N20,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • Lagos partners Osun on calisthenics training

The Lagos State Government on Monday said its training of students and youths on fundamentals of calisthenics was being done in partnership with the Osun State government.

Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule spoke on the partnership while receiving a six-man delegation from Osun in her office at Alausa.

Adebule said the training in calisthenics would help in developing the students mentally, physically and socially.

Calisthenics consists of a variety of movements often performed rhythmical and usually conducted in concerts with stretches to depict specific symbols.

The calisthenics training is in preparation of the ‘Lagos @ 50’ celebrations coming up in May.

Adebule said the calisthenics display of students at the 25th anniversary of the creation of the State of Osun in Aug. 2016 spurred Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode into the partnership.

“Governor Ambode was impressed by the breathtaking calisthenics performances at the Osogbo City Stadium and has decided to replicate same in Lagos State.

“We are partnering with Osun State to share ideas and learn from them to ensure a historic performance at the Lagos @50 celebration and beyond.

“One of the components of calisthenics is to give meaning to the total package of educational training for young minds.

“We are starting this training with our students and we will extend it to the youth in the state,” Adebule said.

Mr Adebayo Ojo, Director, Department for Social and Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance, Office of the Governor, Osun, who led the visiting team, said the school calisthenics programme had been a success in Osun State.

He said the calisthenics programme was conceived to enhance the emergence of a new generation of students who were physically fit, mentally sound and socially responsible individuals that would be well-adjusted to societal needs.

“Osun State is the first in the country to revive this sterling and rewarding initiative in about more than three decades.

“We shall do our best to ensure that we bring out the best in the students who will be trained to produce Eko-Calisthenics that will be of global standard,” he said.

  • Lagos to crush, recycle 4000 seized Okada

Lagos to crush, recycle 4000 seized Okada

•Bikes may be banned in Lekki, VI

Over 4000 commercial motorcycles seized for flouting the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012 will be crushed and recycled, Police Commissioner, Fatia Owoseni said yesterday.
The law prohibits Okada and tricycles also known as Keke Marwa from operating in at least 495 of the 9200 roads and routes across the state.
Owoseni told reporters at the Olusosun Refuse Dumpsite in Ojota that the clampdown on Okada was a fall out of the government’s renewed resolve to address the security issues since criminals operate mostly with okada
He said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed the police and other security agencies to ensure the law is complied with.
The Commissioner said: “It would not be one-off. So far, we have impounded about 500 motorcycles since we started our renewed efforts and we now have a total of about 4, 000 bikes ready to be crushed. The law made provisions on how those motorcycles should be handled and the law also made provision on how to handle those that have flouted the law itself.”
According to Owoseni, the decision to crush and recycle the motorcycles accords with the law.
The enforcement, he said, would also affect Okada patrons, adding that mobile courts would be instituted to try offenders.
“The operators of the commercial motorcycles and those patronizing them, with time, you will get to see the Mobile Court going around to try some of those that have been arrested. What we are saying here is that we want people in Lagos to know that there is a law and the law is made for a purpose and if all of us obey the law and conform, the better for us.”
The government, Owoseni said, was considering banning okada in some areas, , starting with the Lekki and Victoria Island axis.
He frowned at the way Okada and Keke Maruwa flout the law, especially by not obeying traffic light, which in most cases lead to avoidable accident and death.
Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Olanrewaju Elegushi said commercial motorcycles have been warned to clear off restricted routes.
“We have an enforcement unit led by the Commissioner of Police, the Task Force on Environmental and Other Special Offences, the Divisional Police Officers and the Area Commanders. They have started enforcement and we came to see how far they have gone,” Elegushi said.
