  • Lagos celebrates ‘special pupils’

This year’s International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities will linger in the minds of pupils and teachers with special needs in Lagos State for a long time.

The occasion the 10th in the series, was celebrated amid colourful and interesting displays by pupils of the special needs schools across the state.

This year’s theme was ‘Achieving 17 goals for the future we want.’

Pupils from Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care Centre; Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired, National Orthopaedic Special School; and Atunda Olu School, Igbobi, all demonstrated their prowess in dance, drama, parade, musical renditions, and poetry, among others.

Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Idiat Adebule, noted that all persons with disability are endowed with special skills or talents and therefore should be provided with enabling environment to realise their full potential.

She said: “It is our duty as a people to promote and integrate the physically challenged to be a happy part of the larger society. The practice of denying the physically challenged equal job opportunities should also be discouraged. I am sure that given the necessary encouragement and conducive environment, they have a lot to contribute to national development of our nation.”

Adebule also urged all special persons to register with the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASCODA) so that adequate planning can be made for their needs.

Chairman, LASCODA Dr Waheed Oki, appealed to parents of physically challenged children not to hide them but rather allow them benefit from government’s opportunities.

He commended the Lagos for providing an enabling environment for the disabled to thrive educationally, while calling on others to toe this line.

“If you don’t solve the problem of people living with disability, they will become your problem in future. Empower them so that they will become less dependent,” he said.

To people living with disabilities, don’t depend on anyone but yourself. Develop your capabilities; perhaps, that will be your means of livelihood. And to everyone else who does not have any physical challenge, think of something to challenge yourself and move up in life. You can be better than you are today,” Dr Oki said.

The pupils also gave a colourful presentation of the United Nations (UN) 17 sustainable development goals at the occasion.

  • COPA Lagos thrills with potpourri of shows

COPA Lagos thrills with potpourri of shows

This year’s edition of the annual COPA Lagos show which took place at the Eko Atlantic City has taken art and entertainment a notch higher in Nigeria, having treated revelers to a variety of high profile shows.

It was the best of time for fun seekers who were treated to an international football match, a runway show of local designers with Nigerian Beachwear 2017 collection and a series of musical performances featuring some of the best of Nigerian artistes.

At the event which had in attendance notable dignitaries including the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, the crowd was full of merry and cheers for the performers.

The day had begun with a thrilling beach soccer match between Enyimba FC beach soccer team and the Pepsi Football Academy. Next was a celebrity match between Team Dbanj and Team Victor Ikpeba. Team Dbanj included Peter Okoye of P-Square, Samson Adamu, CEO of Kinetic Sports, organisers of the event, and popular Beat FM OAP, Jimi. Ikpeba’s team had other ex-Nigerian internationals like like Aloy Agu in goal, Waidi Akanni, Victor Agali, Mutiu Adepoju, Ifeanyi Udeze and popular celebrity, Frank Edoho of the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fame. The Ex-Internationals won the match 2-1.

The main competition on the day was a game between Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles and the Switzerland national beach soccer team. The Swiss lived up to their pre-tournament billing, beating Nigeria 8-3 in an electrifying encounter, which also saw the emergence of its star player, Noel Ott emerging as the Man of the Match.

The fashion show featured top Nigerian designers and upcoming talents who thrilled the audience with beach-friendly designs with a COPA lifestyle theme, personified by carefully curated pieces from clothing to accessories. The designers included Raya, Kinabuti, Krushil, Assian, Dap Mod and The Weave Hat Company.

Other highlights of the event included a food fair and a dedicated fan zones where sponsors like FCMB, Pepsi, Wakanow and Hero Lager treated fans to different games and contests, with some of the guests taking home a variety of exciting gifts and prizes. The event was rounded off with an all-night open air music concert anchored by Nigeria’s international award winner, DJ Obi.

The feat attained by this year’s COPA Lagos is a confirmation of the words of Samson Adamu, CEO of Kinetic Sports, organisers of the event, who said that COPA Lagos was much more than a football tournament, as it has grown over the years to become a major show capable of putting Nigeria on the global tourism map. He noted that while the football matches served as a fitting forerunner to the CAF Beach Soccer Cup of Nations which comes up two days after at the same venue, the other activities were meant to celebrate other aspects of the passions of Nigerians.

“Despite this being a one day event, this year, we had a huge turnout and the experience this year not only focused on football, but on the different things our people are really very passionate about. We have since moved from being the first ever international beach soccer event in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa to being one of the most attended entertainment events in the region, as can be seen from the crowd here today,” Adamu said.

  • Lagos rejigs waste management

    Lagos rejigs waste management

With the unveiling of new reforms, the Lagos State government is set to transform waste management, environment and the economy, writes MUYIWA LUCAS.

It was an unusual gathering, coming just a few days after the ministry’s monthly media parley was held.

And the entry of the state’s commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare and his Information and Strategy counterpart, Steve Ayorinde, meant it was not business as usual. As the duo, accompanied by other members of the ministry sauntered into the PearlWorth Hotel, Ikeja conference room, it was glaring that something ‘big’ was in the offing.

The occasion turned out to be one that would catapult the state into the next level of waste management, which has remained a sour point in the affairs of a state with an estimated 22 million people.

Using graphics to explain the reform, tagged the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, Adejare noted the flaws in the structure as well as dynamics of the  system. Besides creating an enabling environment for the private sector to harness international best practices, the initiative will equally tackle challenges in solid waste management in the state.

“The Cleaner Lagos Initiative aims to protect the environment, human health and social living standards of Lagos residents by promoting a harmonised and holistic approach to the waste and environmental challenges, thereby ensuring improved operational efficiency. It will also address the lacunae in the  legislation to expand the scope of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to enable it enforce, regulate and generate revenue from the waste management process,” he explained.

To this end, Adejare said the government would carry out a recertification of all the 350 PSP operators, relicense them and audit the state of their compactors. Besides, five new power stations – one in each division in the state – will be built to generate power from wastes, and the numerous dumpsites dotting parts of the state will soon be a thing of the past.

As part of the initiative, Olusosun and Solus dumpsites are to be closed next year, because it has been established that they are dangerous to health and the environment.

“We plan to regenerate Olusosun and turn it into a park, where intercity buses will end their journey and would no longer be allowed to enter into the city. Passengers will from there take taxis and intra-city buses to their destinations in town,” he explained.

Alaso, he said about 25,000 people would be engaged as street sweepers. They would be well-kitted with decent uniforms, gloves, boots, pickers, brushes, carts as well as mobile phones with which to communicate with the control centre, and they would be well paid.

To make them effective, every sanitation worker will reside in where they operate, especially for convenience and to curb the high cost of fare to work. They will be will be well-trained and given an attractive welfare package.

“In all, we hope to generate a total of 46,000 new jobs,” he said.

The commissioner, who disclosed that a law is in the works to back the Initiative, said the scheme would allow big-time players in the waste management sector to do business with the state.

This is why Lagosians will be required to pay a public utility levy (PUL), which is not a tax but something similar to what is being paid to PSP operators. Part of the PUL goes into an Environment Trust Fund.

The commissioner, who described   the situation as a “broken system,” regretted that several factors had combined to cripple the smooth running of the state’s waste management. Some of these include hindrance of regular waste collection by a vicious cycle between clients and operators as poor collection service delivery leads to irregular and poor payments; bin placement, transfer loading stations (TLS), and other supporting infrastructure had been ignored and undue attention placed on waste collection only.

Besides, the waste billing system is said to be unduly complicated due to the differences and inconsistencies in charges and collection routes, therefore, leaving the billing system open to manipulation and fraud.

Adejare  said LAWMA, as regulator for waste management, is overwhelmed by the responsibilities of having to coordinate 350 companies and still carry out its own collection.

To address the situation, he said there would be a transformation of the TLS to modern ones, including the introduction of no fewer than 25 Material Revolving Facility (MRF) where wastes will be sorted. Also, 600 new compactor vehicles will be acquired. Each compactor will be tracked while  the state will be divided into zones for ease of allocation of compactors. There will be a control room where every compactor will be monitored, and existing waste dumpsites will be closed and replaced with engineered sanitary landfill sites. The government is considering sites in Badagry, Epe and Ikorodu for the five sanitary landfills being proposed. The leachate and gas to be recovered from the proposed sanitary landfills will be put to good use.

“The PSP and LAWMA partnership was quite effective, but is no longer applicable, considering the fact that the population of Lagos has increased several fold (and still increasing) and the over 300 compactors in use are old and not suitable for modern waste collection. Wastes should not bring us hardship and shame, but rather we should make money from it. Emphasis will be on zero-dumping, recycling and generation of power from wastes,” he explained.

When fully implemented, Adejare is convinced that the new arrangement will ensure that waste disposal will no longer be a challenge in the state. An efficient system would have been put in  ground for effective management to eradicate cart pushers in the city.

  • Lagos: no one collecting water dues

The Lagos State government yesterday said it did not authorise any consultant to collect water abstraction-related revenue on its behalf.

Commissioner for Information Steve Ayorinde, in a statement, said some members of the Lagos State Chapter of the Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP) had been paying for their water production/packaging operations into a bank account not authorised by the government.

The commissioner said however well-intentioned the association’s recourse to the use of a consultant in facilitating the payment of government revenue by its members might be, it remained a procedural error, which according to him must be discontinued.

He said: “Consequently, it has become imperative to clarify that the government has not appointed any consultant to collect revenue on its behalf.
