Lagos at 50: Celebration will showcase achievements, culture – Ambode

•My critics are ignorant – Soyinka

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Friday officially launched the one year long activities to mark the 50 years anniversary of the State which will climax on May 28, 2017, just as he said the activities lined up would showcase to the world the unique achievements, culture, heritage and the tourism potentials of the State.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at a special children programme tagged “Vision of the Child” to officially kick start the one year long activities for the Golden Jubilee of the State, said the celebration was put together to provide historical opportunity to propel the State into unimaginable greatness as well as put it on highest pedestal in the league of world’s mega-city states.

The Governor, who assured that the events would be the biggest celebration in the 50 years history of the State, added that Lagosians should expect nothing short of world class events. He said: “This golden jubilee celebration will show Lagos for what it is – a home for all and a land of opportunities where dreams are made and fulfilled.

“This celebration will be all inclusive and in furtherance to this, each of the five administrative divisions of the State will have one month to showcase their culture and landmass. In this way, we will expose to the world the uniqueness and diversity of our culture and tradition as well as our great tourism potentials.”

Speaking on the vision of the child initiative, the Governor who said the State had consistently supported the initiative explained that it was aimed at promoting creative thinking, literary arts and painting skills. Besides, Governor Ambode commended the Lagos At  50 Committee headed by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka and Chief Rasheed Gbadamosi, and expressed optimism in their ability to showcase the State to the world and organize memorable events.

In his remarks, Soyinka clarified that the idea of the one year long celebration was just to create consciousness of the celebration in the minds of the people, and not that events would be organized every day. He said for instance, a month of solidarity would be dedicated to victims of Boko Haram, while the people would equally be given the opportunity to know more about Lagos.

Soyinka also used the opportunity of the occasion to fault those against his appointment by Governor Ambode as co-chair of the Committee, saying they were only exhibiting ignorance. While stating that he would not join issue with such people, Soyinka said his family was a pioneer in the development of the State, and that it was unfortunate that the so-called Lagosians were denying themselves the opportunity of knowing Lagos which his Committee would offer.

  • Independence for Lagos councils

Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Economic Planning in the Lagos State House of Assembly Rotimi Olowo has said the time has come for council chairmen to stop  looking for money to run their councils.

He spoke at a stakeholders’ meeting on a bill that would make local governments semi-independent and determine the best methods to develop their areas.

The bill intends to create a board to implement and ensure due compliance with guidelines on economic planning and development, encourage local government participation in economic activities, especially where there are comparative advantages and establish trade fairs to foster relationship and good neighbourliness between the local governments and the state.

The bill gives the board the power to assess the needs of each local government and advise on issues of planning development.

The “local government economic planning and development board” will comprise the governor, commissioners for economic planning and budget, finance, local government administration and community affairs.

According to the sponsor, Deputy Speaker Wasiu Sanni-Eshilokun, only members that do not hold government office would be entitled to renumeration.

According to the lawmaker, development should not go from bottom to the top rather  the other way.

“The situation is challenging. Many of the local government councils can no longer pay their personnel and this cannot continue,” he said.

  • Lagos shuts nine hotels for N30.84m ‘tax fraud’

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has shut nine hotels for failure to remit N30.84 million hotel occupancy and consumption taxes .

Mrs Ajibike Oshodi-Sholola, Head, Distrain Unit of LIRS, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after a state-wide tax law enforcement exercise yesterday.

Oshodi-Sholola said the tax liabilities of the affected hotels were for the period from 12 months to two years.

“The tax liabilities of the hotels are specifically for 2013 to 2014 tax audit year,” she said.

Oshodi-Sholola said LIRS was currently focusing on hotels, saying that “the aim is to ensure that no hospitality firm owes taxes and full tax compliance is achieved.”

Oshodi-Sholola said false addresses given by some organisations were posing challenges to LIRS tax enforcement team.

“Large numbers of the addresses submitted to LIRS are fake and not in existence. The taxes of the companies with the unrealistic addresses will invariably affect and reduce government’s revenue. But any amount which LIRS audits for an organisation to pay as tax is contestable,” she said.

  • Lagos hasn’t let me down, says Jakande

Lagos hasn’t let me down, says Jakande

First civilian governor of Lagos State Lateef Jakande yesterday said he was pleased with the government’s efforts to provide quality education.

Jakande, whose administration from 1979 to 1983 provided free primary and secondary education and built over 300,000 classrooms, said he was satisfied that the seed he sowed had blossomed.

Addressing pupils of Unique Blossom School, Ikorodu, during a visit to his Ilupeju, Lagos home, he said: “I must commend the Lagos State government for carrying on the battle.

“Akinwunmi Ambode, who succeeded Babatunde Fashola, has been carrying on the work which he did and I must say I’m very happy that the seed I sowed has germinated into a big tree.”

Jakande advised the pupils to obey their teachers and follow their hearts.

“The future is yours. Nigeria is a great country and there is hope for every child,” he added.

The children, who were led by the proprietress, Mrs Abimbola Animasaun and several teachers, presented the former governor a portrait done by one of their teachers.

Mrs. Animasaun said the excursion was motivated by the children’s quest to know the person behind Lagos landmarks, such as Jakande Estate and Jakande Bus Stop, among others.

“So, I said since Baba is alive, they should see him for themselves and have memories that’ll last them for a lifetime,” she added.

During the question and answer session, a pupil, Ademiji Theophilus, asked the 86-year-old if he would accept a political appointment.

Laughing, Jakande replied: “At my age, I can only counsel the Buhari government.”

  • Lagos shortlisted for 100 Resilient Cities

Lagos shortlisted for 100 Resilient Cities

The Rockefeller Foundation yesterday expressed optimism that Lagos State may become one of the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) in the world to qualify for the $1million grant for infrastructural development.

Its President, Mr Michael Berkowitz, told  Governor Akinwunmi Ambode that the 100RC challenge was dedicated to cities around the world that are resilient to physical, social and economic challenges that were a growing part of the 21st century.

“100RC supports the adoption and incorporation of a view of resilience that includes not just the shocks – earthquakes, fires, floods, etc. – but also the stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day-to-day basis.

“Examples of these stresses include high unemployment, an overtaxed or inefficient public transportation system; endemic violence; or chronic food and water shortages.

“By addressing both the shocks and the stresses, a city becomes more able to respond to adverse events, and is overall better able to deliver basic functions in both good times and bad, to all populations,’’ he said.

Berkowitz said the 100RC Challenge which became open to applicants in 2015 got more than 330 applications from different cities in the world, Lagos inclusive.

He said the foundation was on tour of Lagos to assess its resilient capability and determine its worthiness to be one of the 100RC network.

“With what we have seen and the innovative programmes by the state government, Lagos State stands a chance of being selected into the 100RC network.

“By being a part of the 100RC Network, cities will be able to share best practices, solve problems collectively, learn from each other, and connect with other resilience experts.

“The chosen cities will receive direct funding of $1 million and above, and those costs vary from city to city.

“Through these actions, 100RC aims not only to help individual cities become more resilient, but will facilitate the building of a global practice of resilience among governments, NGOs, the private sector, and individual citizens,’’ he said.

Ambode, represented by his Deputy, Dr Idiat Adebule, said the state had exhibited resilience in the face of many physical and socio-economic challenges.

Ambode said Lagos had been able to withstand challenges, recover quickly and become stronger.

According to him, Lagos is qualified to be chosen as one of the 100RC in the world.

  • Lagos era of less talk, more action

Lagos era of less talk, more action

As the countdown to the first anniversary of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration begins, it has been harvest of projects after projects, writes OLUKOREDE YISHAU

If there is one fact that is not lost on Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, it is that the primary objective of every government is to improve the lives of the people by ensuring it delivers infrastructure that will affect the people directly and indirectly.

No wonder in some quarters, the governor has been nicknamed ‘less talk, more action’. Some prefer to refer to him as ‘silent achiever’. The reasons are clear.

In the last 11 months, every local government in the state has felt the impact of the administration through one project or the other.

From upgrade of road infrastructure to schools’ upgrade as well as street light projects, the wind of change blowing through the state is fast sweeping across all the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas.

Last week, Ambode was in the news. As part of plans to mark his one year in office, series of projects, including those executed by the local and state government, were inaugurated across the 57 councils.

For five days, Ambode detailed his cabinet members to hand over the projects to the people.

In Oshodi Isolo Local Government Area, the governor inaugurated the popular Brown Street, Okota Road in Isolo and a Police Post in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area.

Brown Street was dilapidated for years until the Ambode administration awarded the contract to Messrs Lubrik Construction Company Limited last October to rehabilitate and upgrade the road.

The road is 690metres. With its new state, the people’s standard of living, property values and traffic flow would improve.

Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, said he would not leave anyone behind in his development agenda.

He said his administration had worked to promote active collaboration among all tiers of government with the community development as the centre piece.

In Ejigbo, the governor inaugurated the rehabilitated Ashamu Police Post in Ailegun, Ejigbo and handed it over to the police.

He appealed to community members to support the police in fighting crime by giving out useful information that would lead to nabbing of criminals.

In Alimosho Local Government Area, the governor inaugurated the Mosan Okunola Mini Waterworks after over 20 years of being moribund.

The governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser, Housing, Mrs. Aramide Giwanson,  said the state now has 33 mini waterworks and five major waterworks.

The Executive Secretary of Mosan Okunola LCDA, Mrs Opeyemi Akindele,  said the water project was an eloquent testimony of a promise kept and delivered.

A community leader and pioneer chairman of Mosan Okunola LCDA, Elder Abel Gbadejo, said in less than a year in office, Ambode has performed creditably well, adding that the Water Project would improve the life style of people in the area because water is very important.

In Ojo Local Government, Governor Ambode commissioned the Usman Mogaji Road and the Data Capturing Centre.

Ambode, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Urban Development, Mrs Yetunde Onabolu,   told the residents that his administration would not renege on running a transparent government.

At the inauguration of the data capturing centre in Ojo Local Government where all unemployed youth in the area would register, Ambode urged the residents to make  effective use of the centre for engagement of their youths.

Also at the inauguration of Usman Mogaji Road in Ajangbadi, the governor advised the residents to make good use of the road and ensure they pay their taxes as at when due.

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Ayo Ogunlana, commended Governor Ambode for the laudable strides he has recorded in just 11 months in office.

In Amuwo Odofin Local Government, the governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Lola Akande, handed over 10 passengers’ capacity fibre boats to Riverine Communities in Amuwo Odofin Local Government and Oriade Local Council Development Area in Ijegun Jetty to aid in conveying school teachers based in riverine areas.

In Epe, the governor, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Community and Communications, Kehinde Bamigbetan, inaugurated blocks of classroom at St. Theresa’s College, Oke-Oyingbo, a Town Hall at Ita-Opo, Epe and Regional Water Scheme, Otta-Ikosi, while in Eti-Osa, the 1.9km Unity/1st Avenue Osapa London Road in Eti-Osa Local Government and block of 16 classrooms with modern facilities at Kuramo Primary School in Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The governor also inaugurated the Job Registration and Labour Exchange Centre for the Lagos Division in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the State as part of the employment creation and wealth generation initiative of his administration.

In Shomolu Local Government, Ambode inaugurated a Primary Health Centre and Diagnosis Centre named after him and a 400metres road in Bariga Local Council Development Area.

In Ibeju Lekki Local Government, Governor Ambode who was represented by the Special Adviser, Food Security, Ganiu Okanlomo Sanni, commissioned the Origanrigan and Awoyaya PHC, saying it was in line with his administration’s zero tolerance for maternal mortality.

On Monday, May16, the train was at Apapa, Ajeromi, Kosofe, Ikorodu and Badagry local governments.

At Apapa Local Government, the projects handed over by the Governor include 9 roads within the Apapa Business District, Ultra-modern Liverpool Jetty, 12 block of classrooms at Methodist Nursery and Primary School and 4 block of classrooms at Arakan Barracks Nursery and Primary School with standard facilities such as modern toilets, sick bay, furniture, ceiling fans, ramps to accommodate the physically challenged, among others.

Babatunde Adejare, inaugurated an ultra-modern shopping complex at the popular Sabo Market.

He also inaugurated the Ota-Ona Dual Carriage Road as well as block of classrooms in Agbede, all in Ikorodu.

At Badagry, the governor, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemo, inaugurated a block of 16 classrooms and another block of 8 classrooms, as well as 6 classrooms in Badagry West Local Council Development Area.

At Kosofe, the governor represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Oluseye Oladejo inaugurated road projects at Oladele, Shoyebi and Ademola Taiwo/Alamu Taiwo/Ogunsola streets.

Speaking on the 114 LG roads, Ambode, who was represented in Ajeromi-Ifelodun by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said: “The feat is unprecedented in the history of Lagos and this has provided employment to over 9,000 citizens directly and indirectly within the year.”

The Ojora of Ijora, Oba Fatai Aromire, hailed Ambode, saying the remarkable feat achieved just within one year in office was an eloquent confirmation that the state is progressing.

“As the paramount ruler of this domain, I like to specially appreciate our amiable governor for the projects he embarked upon in our area. We are indeed very happy and wish the governor well in the leadership of the state,” Oba Aromire said.

Also, Vice Chairman of Apapa Community Development Committee (CDC) Saka Yussuf said the projects inaugurated in their area were unprecedented in the history of the area, adding that the people were indeed happy with the leadership of the State.

A former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, who spoke in Ikorodu, commended the laudable stride of the governor in just 11 months of inception, just as he appealed to people who are yet to feel the impact of government in their areas to be patient.

At Ifako- Ijaye Local Government Area of the state, the governor, who was represented by  the Commissioner for Tourism and Culture Mr. Folorunsho Folarin Coker commissioned Oluwasijibomi, Folorunsho Streets and Iju Primary Health Care Center, Lonlo saying that the era of spending tax payers money on white elephant projects not needed by the people were gone in the state.

He said the state has experienced improved physical and urban development, proper land administration and illumination of its highways and streets.

The governor appealed to monarchs and communities leaders to address the menace of cultism, miscreants and hoodlums and promote peace and clean environment at all times.

With the manner projects are being delivered, many look up to the Ambode administration taking the state to heights not hitherto attained.

  • Lagos empowers 500 youths

    Lagos empowers 500 youths

FIVE hundred youths have passed out from the Youth Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme (YEASAP) of Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

They graduated yesterday at the Onikan Youth Centre on Lagos Island.

The training was held in conjunction with a Lagos-based organisation, Ojuloge Arts Leadership and Development Initiatives.

The best students – Odusanwo Christiana, Ejimofor Tobias, Alausa Ayodeji, Nurudeen Gboyega and Soyemi Nimotalai – were given N50,000 each to start their business.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Alhaja Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the training is targeted at empowering and enhancing youths to generate wealth for them and create jobs for others.

The programme, she said, had benefited many youths in the state, especially vulnerable women and girls.

The Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration, she said, would empower youths, the vulnerable members of the society without bias for their ethnic, religious or social status to enable them contribute to moving Lagos forward.

“This administration believes in the dynamism and vibrancy of the youth segment of our society as a vital platform to transform the socioeconomic terrain of Lagos State, considering the global economic meltdown which has changed the way business is done”, she said.

She said the governor has established a N25 billion Employment Trust Fund to provide seed money for any youth that is willing to engage in agriculture and other vocations that will make a difference in people’s lives.

Wife of the governor Mrs Bolanle Ambode, represented by Mrs Alayoteju Onasanya, said: “No one can take a place of leadership if he or she has no means of livelihood which is the main reason Ojuloge Arts in conjunction with the government organised the skills acquisition programme to empower youths.

“To take your part in leadership, you need character, it is character that generates goodwill for you among people you move and interact with; you need trust because trust connects you to progress.”
