  • Minimal presence of soldiers on Lagos roads

The presence of soldiers was very minimal on Lagos roads yesterday during the governorship and State Assembly elections.

This was contrary to what obtained penultimate weekend during the Presidential and National Assembly polls.

Many spots manned by soldiers on March 28 were completely devoid of their presence.

In Ebute Metta, which witnessed a huge deployment of soldiers at different junctions during the presidential election, there were virtually soldiers.

It was the same along Ikorodu road, which was also very free.

  • Guber poll: Niger Delta militants, AIG Mbu storm Lagos

Ahead of Saturday’s governorship poll, Niger Delta militants have reportedly stormed Lagos State, while Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Joseph Mbu has also relocated to the state at the behest of the presidency.
The mission of the militants and Mbu in Lagos is not clear but the All Progressives Congress (APC) believes it is to assist the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) alleged election rigging plan.
Mbu’s relocation to Lagos and presence of the militants coincides with the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday during which according to the APC he met with Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Musiliu Obanikoro, the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Jimi Agbaje and OPC leader, Gani Adams.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC slammed the PDP over its alleged desperation to capture Lagos State at all cost, including using fake
result sheets which were said to have been flown in from Abuja for Saturday’s elections.
It warned that the people will resist any attempt to rob them of their votes.
According to APC, before the meeting by the president, eagle-eyed Nigerians who are ” appalled by the PDP’s rigging plans have widely circulated on the Social Media the details of the planned electoral malfeasance, including the airlifting from Abuja to Lagos of a Black Kia Mohave SUV, with plate number DHQ 340, which was packed with election materials (especially result sheets).”

”The meeting in Lagos was aimed at devising a strategy to distribute the fake result sheets that were packed into the SUV, which will be free to move around (because of its plate number) despite the restriction on vehicular movement during the elections.

”It is sad that the same President, who conceded defeat in the presidential election and then followed up with a speech in which he said he would like his ‘legacy’ of free and fair elections to endure, is the one who is presiding over a desperate move to steal the people’s votes on Saturday.

”How can President Jonathan’s ‘legacy’ endure when one of his last acts in office is a seeming vengeance mission to lead his party to capture Lagos, because the PDP sees the state as a cash cow that they
can milk to death, with the party’s gravy train at the federal level having derailed?” the party queried.

”In their desperation over the Lagos election, they have shamelessly divided the people along ethnic, religious and regional lines, thus setting the stage for the condemnable hate speeches to which they have in turn latched on to further whip up primordial sentiments.

”The PDP cannot now seek to benefit from the problems it caused in the first instance. This party (PDP) and its leader, the President, have divided Nigerians in general and Lagos residents in particular more than any individual or group and at any time in history. If today things are being said that should not have been said, it is the direct consequence of the PDP’s divisiveness,” APC added.

The party advised the President to desist from any vengeance mission that will only rubbish whatever is left of his so-called legacy of free and fair elections.

It urged all APC members and supporters, and indeed all the good people of Lagos, to be extra vigilant on Saturday to thwart the evil machinations of the fallen behemoth called the PDP.

”Lagosians, please come out en masse on Saturday and vote in a peaceful manner for a candidate of your choice. Say no to coercion, defend your votes and repudiate all architects of divisiveness and rigging,” APC said.

  • Police make special plans for Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, others

Police make special plans for Kwara, Ogun, Oyo, Lagos, others

The police have deployed Special Forces in Rivers State because of the tense political atmosphere, Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba said yesterday.

In Rivers are: “32 units of Police Mobile Force (PMF), four unit of Counter Terrorism Units (CTU), four unit of Special Protection Units (SPU) and six crack teams of detectives from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and complements of Intelligence officers.”

Governorship and Houses of Assembly elections are slated for tomorrow.

In Rivers State, no fewer than 56 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been killed in recent weeks, the party has claimed.

The IG has also deployed Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police to supervise the elections.

Six Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) are to coordinate security in the six geo-political zones.

The deployments are contained in a statement by the Force spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

The 16 AIGs are: “AIG Usman A. Gwary – Abia State, AIG Olufemi Adenaike – Kwara State, AIG Mbu J. Mbu – Ogun State, AIG Patrick Dey Dokumor – Kaduna State, AIG Tambari Y. Muhammed – Jigawa State, and AIG Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar – Gombe State.

Abba also deployed Commissioners of Police to command each of the senatorial zones of; Gombe, Bauchi, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Benue, Edo, Plateau and Sokoto states.

  • ‘APC will retain Lagos’

    ‘APC will retain Lagos’

Alhaji Lateef Raji is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State. In this interview with Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN, he explains why the party will win the governorship and the House of Assembly polls.

What is responsible for the low turnout of voters in Lagos during the presidential election?

A lot of things were responsible. Many voters were discouraged by the mal-functioning of the card readers. Lagosians are impatient. After staying on queue for several hours, they were disappointed that they could not be accredited by the card readers. So, many of them returned home in annoyance.  There was also issue of violence that preceded the election in Lagos. Hell was let loose before the election as hoodlums sponsored by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) invaded All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rallies.  There were gunshots everywhere in Lagos the day preceding election. All these scared people from coming out to vote. On the day of election, the police turned back APC agents in some polling booths on flimsy excuse that they did not display party tag. Thousands of voters were not allowed to cast their votes even when the card readers had authenticated their voters’ cards.

What measures have you put in place to forestall the recurrence of this experience in the governorship election?

The APC in Lagos State will continue to mobilise the people to come out and vote this Saturday for its governorship and House of Assembly candidates. We hope the electoral umpire — the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) — will do the needful by ensuring that voting materials and electoral officers get to their respective polling units on time. INEC should tell security agents that it is not their responsibility to turn back party agents. Where the voter’s cards are accepted by the card reader, the voters should be allowed to vote. INEC officials should not be stumbling blocks in the accreditation process.

Is it true that Nigerians from the Southsouth and the Southeast zones worked against the APC during the presidential election?

There are allegations that they did. But, we don’t want to believe that it was the only reason why the margin was slim. We understand that their decision was informed by religious and ethnic consideration. I implore them to vote for the ruling party in Lagos where they earn their living, so that they will continue to benefit from the government that is providing them infrastructure to make life worth living.  They should be more concerned with the place where they are living and earning their living. They are largely accommodated in Lagos, they are part and parcel of the Lagos community.

Nevertheless, over confidence contributed to the result. A lot of our people did not come out to vote on March 28. The expectation was that the APC would deliver at least two million votes during the presidential election. In any case, the party’s leadership in the state have gone back to the drawing board to address the lapses.

Are you confident that the APC will win the governorship and House of Assembly elections?

Oh yes, APC will come out victorious on Saturday. Our governorship candidate will win with landslide. We will win all the 40 seats in the House of Assembly. The presidential election is quite different from the governorship. The result of presidential election cannot demoralise us. Rather, it has galvanised us into working for landslide victory on Saturday. The APC is endowed with a strong fighting spirit. Remember in 2011, Governor Babatunde Fashola, the APC candidate, polled  1.3 million votes as against the PDP candidate who came a distanced second with 300,000 votes.

We under-estimated the desperation of the PDP; the over confident was our undoing. They have shown their hands, we will amputate them. We will not allow the PDP to destroy the state we have built to the envy of the whole world since 1999 without Federal Government support. Now that the progressives have won at the centre, Lagos will for the first time be in tune with the Federal Government. The PDP can’t take over Lagos.

Lagos was the epicentre of the struggle for nationalism. Since then Lagos has not enjoyed federal presence. The formation of the APC started in Lagos. We will not allow the PDP to reap where they did not sew; we will not allow them to come and destroy what we built in Lagos. We will fight and put in everything we have to ensure we enjoy the patronage of the Federal Government for the first time.

Some say Jimi Agbaje is the selling point of the PDP in Lagos State. Do you agree?

Agbaje lacks capacity to rule a complex state like Lagos. Where does he want to start from? Can he cope with the problem of flood? Ask him the number of teachers in Lagos public schools, he can’t tell you. He has no track record of public service. Agbaje lacks cognate experience in public administration. That was why he didn’t get our party’s ticket in 2007. People are not just thrown into office.

He has not come up with new ideas in his campaigns rather he has been repeating APC promises. His pharmacy shop remains what it was 30 years ago. We can’t entrust the administration of Lagos to someone lacking public administration experience. We have mirrored his private life to determine what he will offer us in public service. The problems of Lagos will overwhelm him. By the time when receives 200 phone calls ??? a day, he will capitulate.

  • Why Lagos, Ogun, Oyo should vote APC

Why Lagos, Ogun, Oyo should vote APC

Governorship elections will hold tomorrow in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states. The three Southwest states are strongholds of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which swept the poll at the presidential election two weeks ago. The Southwest is regarded as the traditional home of the progressives. The performance of the APC governors in the zone has endeared the party to the people. The election will be fought on the basis of party programmes, the candidates’ pedigrees and their antecedents. Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN writes

The rapid development witnessed in Lagos State in the past 16 years is unprecedented. The foundation was laid by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. His successor, Governor Babatunde Fashola, has built on it. Fashola and his predecessor have been working towards changing the face of Lagos State. The two administrations have been applauded for the infrastructural renewal across the three senatorial districts.

    Lagos as pacesetter

Legal luminary Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN) said Fashola has established a modern, enlightened democratic and civilised state, while building on the legacy of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. According to Sagay, considerable attention have been devoted to the infrastructural and physical development, and transformation.

He added: “The people of Lagos are beneficiaries of this physical transformation, which has introduced ‘another life’ in Lagos. Among these projects are the construction of the 10-lane Okokomaiko-Marina Expressway, with its light rail component; the Ikoyi-Lekki Cable Bridge; the beautification of Lagos, with the establishments of parks and gardens in locations that were hitherto the domain of ‘area boys’; the reconstruction of public utilities including the City Hall and the Freedom Park, have all contributed to restore Lagos to its glory.”

The  Fashola Administration has invested heavily in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of new blocks of classrooms in public schools; the distribution of free text books; the provision of well-equipped laboratories and libraries; provision of buses for teachers to ease transportation problems; re-launch of uniformed voluntary organisations in public schools; and the implementation of Teachers’ Salary Scale (TSS).

The same feat was recorded at the tertiary level, with the revamping of technical colleges and massive development of infrastructure at Lagos State University (LASU). The government has reverted LASU fee to N25,000 per annum as demanded by the students.

The first major reform carried out by the government in 2007 was in the area of security. Criminal activities were so rampant in the state. More worrisome was the persistent cases of bank robberies. Thus, Fashola initiated the Safe City Project, which later metamorphosed into the establishment of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF). This platform, driven by public -private partnership (PPP), became a mobilising force for corporate organisation and individual to provide equipment and resources for security agencies. This approach was a pragmatic response to the operational deficiency of the police and other security agencies.

The collective investment in crime prevention has led to a lower crime rate in the state. The government has made judicious use of the fund. It has constantly provided patrol vehicles, motorbikes bullet-proof vests and other equipment to the police to combat crime.

The APC administration has also scored a pass mark in the beautification of the environment, agriculture and transportation. For a state with a population of 20 million, effective public transportation is very imperative. Thus, the government implemented the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) to effectively address the transportation challenges. The success of this scheme has attracted the attention of other states. Even, the Ghanaian Government sent a delegation to understudy the scheme, with a view to replicating it over there. The water transportation also received a boost in the rural and riverine areas. Ferry terminals and support services to ease transportation along that corridor were provided by the state government.

The administration also introduced the issuance of the Electronic Certificate of Occupancy and launched the Lagos Home Ownership Scheme (HOMS), a strategic intervention to deliver housing to citizens on a minimum of 10-year mortgage and a maximum interest of 9.5 per cent.

Lagos State cannot afford to be in opposition now that the APC will take over the Federal Government on May 29. Since independence Lagos has been in the vanguard of the struggle to install a progressive Federal Government. Lagos State should reap the fruits of its labour by voting APC in the governorship and State House of Assembly elections on Saturday.

The APC governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode had been part of Lagos success story in the last 15 years. But being a civil servant, he was neither seen nor heard. He was in the background along several others, designing and implementing many of the policies that stood out Lagos out from the rest of the country. Ambode as Auditor General of Lagos State designed the template that revolutionised revenue generation from N600 million to over N6 billion every month.

The advantages of Lagos being in tune with the APC controlled Federal Government are many. The abandoned federal projects in Lagos State will be completed; the abandoned federal roads and properties on which Lagos State government used to spend billions of naira to maintain without being reimbursed will cease; the construction of the fourth mainland bridge will come to fruition; and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) may likely become full Local Government given the numerical strength of the APC in the next Assembly.

    Ogun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun has turned around the face of Ogun through his five cardinal programmes that bordered on massive construction of standard roads, building of model schools, restoration of peace and orderliness, provision of health care delivery and clean and safe environment.

Analysts ascribed the feats to purposeful planning, focus and commitment to development by the governor and his team and the support of the good people.

On assumption of office on May 29,2011, Amosun hit the ground running because he was aware of the huge infrastructural deficit on ground and so, his government is committed to further developing people and he has been able to bring credibility to governance. That explains why the people are in support of his administration as evidenced in the developmental projects carried out across the country.

Many have commended him for his exemplary achievements in four years. President Goodluck Jonathan once remarked that Governor Amosun “is a hardworking governor and has done wonderfully well in his two years in office”.

The opposition parties and critics are not only having sleepless time regarding the pace of transformation in the state by Amosun but are also confused because of the precarious financial position inherited from the Gbenga Daniel administration.

Everywhere he goes, brooms fill the air in acknowledgement of his good performance. Egba monarchs led by Alake, Oba Aremu Gbadebo paid tribute to the son of the soil, saying he has lived up to expectation. In particular, the royal father was impressed by the transformation of his domain. “We are here to testify that the past that the past three and half years of Amosun’s government have been like 20 years of development in our state. We have come to appreciate the politics of good roads, the politics of good schools and health facilities. We believe that the person who did all this within this short time will do more if given another opportunity because the best is yet to come”, he said.

In Ogun West Senatorial District, leaders of thought and traditional rulers, including the renowned historian Professor Anthony Asiwaju, and the Olola of Ilara Kingdom, Oba Samuel Alade Adeluyi have endorsed Amosun’s  re-election bid despite the PDP candidate comes from the zone. They lauded the governor for opening the area with 110 kilo metre road.

The opinion leaders noted that their communities, which were almost marooned from each other and from the rest of the state, have been connected with one another effectively through Ilara-Ijoun-Egua-Oja Odan-Ilase road that stretchs over four local government areas in the zone.

The youths in Ogun West also endorsed Amosun for second term. They said they wanted him to continue because he has performed.

    Oyo

Stakeholders in Oyo State politics believe Governor Abiola Ajimobi stands a better position to win a second term. They based their judgment on the performance of the governor in the last four years.

Civil Rights activist Moshood Erubami said there is no doubt that the governor would be returned by the electorate. He said the governor has demonstrated enough courage to assist the people and ensure that governance meets their genuine desires.

Erubami: “This is a governor that is daily adding value reconstructing the state, re-orienting the indigenes, restoring hope and transforming governance with demonstrated character of integrity. His style of governance has been posing questions to his predecessors about where the monies being committed to development during their administration were being put during their own tenure that nothing concrete was visible beyond fuji and juju fanfare on daily basis.

“The face of Ibadan had remained, dirty and structurally defective in the last 40 years, with nothing to show for the years of government and governance in the state. This made it difficult to attract investors to site industry in the state, thereby reducing it to a teacher’s state without major platform for sustainable human development.

“The environmental beautification effort of government is quite discernible to all as everyone can note the order being brought to motor garages, the changing face of our roads and reduction in traffic hold –ups. Past governments had created different security outfits to address insecurity and other societal decay, but none was as effective and mobile as Operation Burst, which is ever mobile and steadfast in curbing brigandage in the society. Never before has any administration introduced a security outfit that is as mobile and effective as Operation Burst.”

Public affairs analyst Dr Goke Ajetunmobi said the governor’s activities have impacted positively on the lives of the people. “He has shown greater commitment to service through his Urban Renewal Programme, which had placed the major cities in the state on a new pedestal”, he noted.

Ajetunmobi made reference to Ibadan, which hitherto was classified as the dirtiest city in West Africa, pointing out that Ajimobi has successfully changed the face of the metropolis. He said the governor has restored peace and security in Ibadan, which used to be a theatre of war between the warring factions of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). Other achievements, according to him, are the dualisation of roads leading to all major cities and towns around the capital; youth empowerment scheme for unemployed graduates and free medical services for the people including surgical operations.

The analyst argued that the ideal thing in a society where the performance is the criteria for re-election is to allow Ajimobi to have a second term.

Ajimobi’s re-election bid has received the royal blessing of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Odulana Odugade, and Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewunmi Ajagungbade. The royal fathers based their endorsement on what they described as unprecedented development that Oyo State has witnessed under the Ajimobi Administration.

  • The Lagos issue

SIR: Lagos has always been accommodating to all comers. In its long and rich history, there has never been any major record of blood letting and inter ethnic discord and strife. Let us hope that this will continue to be so. As exasperating as the place can be at times, it remains actual fun a place to live. That is why it is a melting pot. It is an all comers place precisely because those you meet there on arrival are always so enduringly accommodating.

Not everyone everywhere else is that all encompassing.  Astonishingly, in contradistinction, there are parts of cities in Switzerland where foreigners cannot buy property. They can rent for as long as they like but none of the changing of title business. Most people first come across this caveat through the property pages. Lagos does not have this kind of caveat to its eternal glory. Such is the liberal ethos of the metropolis that no one ever mooted the odious and utterly disgusting concept of ‘abandoned property‘ there.

Certainly, that most fair minded of men, the former Lagos state military administrator, Mobolaji Johnson, had all the legal instruments to do so. However, the Yoruba are not like that. This is more than you can say for some other people. We must not also forget that a lot of people in Lagos also collected rent for those who were trapped in the east due to the civil war. This is a classic case of being your brothers’ keeper.

It will be most unfortunate if everything now changes due to some senseless and insensitive exuberance. It should not come to “OK! No more Mr. Nice guy”. If it does, it diminishes the very essence of our humanity. Lagos is what we should aspire to be. It is the most civilised part of Nigeria. It has always been.

In the First Republic, P.C Ebudike represented Badagry-West in the Western House of Assembly. Mrs Mercy Eneli, Ibezim Obiajulu and Moronu were councillors freely elected by all Lagosians. It has been a long glorious history of accommodation.  To the opportunists and the sabre rattlers, let us remind them of the words of Bob Marley ‘when the rain falls, it won’t fall on one man‘s house‘. For they reap the whirlwind those who (inadvertently, it is to be hoped), sow the wind.

  • ‘Igbos will vote for Ambode’

    ‘Igbos will vote for Ambode’

A notable Lagos based administrator, Benedine Eloka-Umuoji, has called on Igbo residents and other non indigenes in Lagos to regard Oba’s comments as his personal opinion and vote for Akinwumi Ambode and other APC candidates.

Eloka-Umuoji, who is one of the Igbos based in Lagos, said it would be unfair to visit Akiolu’s sin on Ambode, whose party; All Progressives Congress (APC) has since dissociated itself from the monarch’s comments.

‎‎She also urged her kinsmen not allow the opinion of the Oba to derail them from fulfilling their promise to vote for Ambode as the next governor of the state.

According to her, “We are in a symbiotic relationship and must do everything so support our host.‎ Nonetheless; we give Oba Akiolu kudos for reminding us that we are strangers. The truth is that we are strangers here. Lagos belongs to some people, just like Onitsha and Aba. Let’s not carry on as if this place is a no man’s land. It is not!

“The Oba’s statement only succeeded in opening our thoughts to start considering shifting investments down our real father land. However, the Oba of Lagos does not have the impetus to insult us and we therefore demand his apology.

“Nevertheless, we would troop out en-mass to vote for Ambode because we believe in Fashola’s administration and its uniqueness. ‎At least Lagos is being re-branded. APC government would support our objective, and so we would reject sarcastic words opposing our journey to our rehoboth. Such is the Oba’s statement. It is devil’s strategy. Please let us ignore it.”

‎Eloka-Umuoji, therefore urged Ambode to as a matter of urgency address the alleged extortion of money from Igbo traders in all markets in Lagos state by Yoruba Market union leaders immediately he assumes office on May 29.

“The in-coming governor should ensure more representation of the Igbos in his government‎, give approval of Certificate Of Occupancy for properties owned by non indigenes, provide adequate compensation for properties demolished for public interest belonging to affected persons, and the Igbos in the state, curtail the excesses of the Law enforcement agencies particularly the LASMA that hid under Fashola Law to mete hardship and punishment on Lagosians and ‎review Okada riders policy,” she added.

  • April 11th elections: Lagos must be wise

SIR: All is now set for the Governorship and State Assembly elections across most states of the federation. In the last few months, the candidates and their parties have been feeding the people with promises of what they will do when they get to or re-elected to power. To this end, one can safely posit that they have done their bits and it is now left to the electorates to do the needful come Saturday 11th April.

However, it will be pertinent to call on the electorate to be wise when choosing the party/candidates to vote for. At this juncture, I will like to concentrate on Lagos, my state of origin and residence.

It is no longer news to hear people from different parts of the country (even foreign visitors) including top government officials using the transformation that has taken place in Lagos as reference point to other governors to emulate so that the people can enjoy true dividends of democracy.

This, is in view, of the fact that a lot of infrastructural projects have been completed and some ongoing; jobs have been created; workers are paid regularly and other laudable programmes have been put in place to pave ways for a better future for the people. So, one can safely say ‘it has been so far, so good’.

Interestingly, members of the opposition parties have also given credence to the fact that the Fourth Republican governments in the state (1999 to date) have performed creditably and that they would have done far better if they had been in the same political party with the government at the federal level.

During the electioneering campaign, the opposition party (PDP) in the state strongly emphasised on the need for people to vote for their party so that more development can be witnessed because of its affiliation with the federal government (PDP). This permutation was based on their unflinching belief that PDP will retain power at the federal level. True to their insinuation, I want to strongly align with their position that the progressive government in the state would have done excellently if they have been accorded the required attention and entitlements by the federal government. Be that as it may, it is still safe to say that our progressive leaders have put in their best to lead us to where we are today.

It is in view of the position of the PDP vis-à-vis the efforts and good work of the government and leaders of the APC in the state that I will want to put forward the following tips for our people to consider before casting their votes on Saturday 11th April.

Firstly, by the special grace of Almighty God, the outcome of the presidential elections held on March 28th, clearly shows that the APC will be in charge at the federal level from May 29th. What this means is that the best thing for every patriotic person in Lagos is to opt for the APC at the state level. This is in view of the fact that it will ensure continuity of the good work of the progressive government as well as getting the required and necessary support from the federal government.

Secondly, the opposition party should be honourable enough to still stand by their very unique position and campaign strategy that Lagos will be better off if a candidate of the same political affiliations with the federal government is voted into power.

Thirdly, after the party primary that produces Akinwunmi Ambode as the flag bearer of the APC, some leaders of the PDP in the state came out boldly to say that the APC have shown them the direction to go in selecting their own candidate (that is a Christian and qualified professional). This is an admission of the fact that Ambode is qualified, sound and capable of ruling the state.

Fourthly, it would not be in the best interest of Lagosians and the state to take a dangerous gamble by putting our future in the hands of those that could not conduct peaceful and rancor-free party primaries.

Fifthly, the state is steadily growing and now the envy of all and sundry. We cannot afford to take chances of experimentation going backwards.

Sixthly, the PDP has engaged in evil personal campaigns against Asiwaju in the state to sell a dummy to innocent electorates and swing votes in their favour.

Finally, now that we have gotten the opportunity that we have sought for years. So, my good people, it is time to VOTE WISELY.

  • OPC: No rift between Lagos and Ndigbo

OPC: No rift between Lagos and Ndigbo

A faction of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) yesterday warned against any affront on the Lagos monarch, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, over his recent intervention in the political process.

The group said any attempt to drag the royal institution in the mud will be tantamount to disrespect for the cherished custom, culture and tradition of Yoruba.

OPC National Coordinating Council (NCC) also said that the Yoruba and the Igbo will continue to co-exist peacefully in Lagos.

A council member, Monsuru Akande, urged Igbo people to reciprocate the kind gesture of Yoruba in Lagos.

Akande said in a statement that OPC will resist any attempt to rubbish the royal stool of Eleko for Partisan reasons.

    The statement reads:

“The attention of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has been drawn to some unruly and unbecoming comments purportedly in reaction to alleged comments by the paramount ruler of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and warn all those involved to desist from such unbecoming acts forthwith.

“The institution of the oba is one the Yoruba race hold in high esteem, and the OPC as irredentist defenders of Yoruba culture and heritage would therefore not tolerate anybody -irrespective of their places of birth of conviction- to denigrate what their hosts (Yorubas) hold sacred.

“While we accept that that institution should remain non-partisan, it must also be acknowledged that the Palace of the Oba of Lagos has already claimed that the royal father was misrepresented in the press and pleaded for understanding.

“Be that as it may, the Yoruba’s accommodating and loving nature should not be misconstrued as timidity.  As hosts, we have given all our visitors enough space and opportunity to bloom and flourish without molestations, and of all the tribes and visitors in Lagos, none has enjoyed the benevolence of Lagos and indeed all of Yorubaland as much as the Igboman and nation.

“The evidence of the claim above can be found in the fact that Yorubaland as a whole is the most cosmopolitan area in Nigeria.  We Yoruba have allowed other tribes to own businesses, properties and even contest and hold political positions on Yoruba soil in a manner unreciprocated anywhere else in Nigeria.

“Using the same Lagos as an example, the fact that the likes of Pastor Ben. Akabueze and Joe Igbokwe have become an integral part of the political frame work of Lagos State for years now is proof enough that Lagos and indeed the Yoruba are excellent hosts. Akabueze has for the last ten years been directing and coordinating the economic direction of the state from his enviable position as the honorable commissioner for budget and planning while Igbokwe has held sways general manager at LASIMRA and head, UFRU.

“Others such as Ngozi Nwosu the popular actress from Imo State who got N6million for overseas surgery, the late comrade Chima Ubani whose family got cash and a gift of 3bedroom accommodation at Marwa Gardens as well as First Consultant Hospital that got N50 million as compensation for involvement in the Ebola case are evidence that the Igbos are not despised in Lagos.

“Nowhere in Nigeria -east of the Niger- is the Yoruba or any other tribe accorded the kind of gesture the Igbos have been enjoying in Lagos in the last 12 or so years since these bonafide Igbo men entered into the Lagos political scene.

“As for the likes of Bode George, Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and their party the PDP, their outcry is the reaction of a person or group without shame and critical thinking (arojinle). Is it that they have a case of memory dysfunction or are they just plain mischievous. Have they so quickly forgotten that it is their party that started the politicisation of the institution and monarchy with the President’s visit to the same Oba of Lagos earlier this January as the forerunner to visits to many other obas in Yorubaland.  None of the PDP members complaining now saw any thing wrong with the attempts to involve our obas in partisan politics until it backfired against them and their party.

“This brings us to the warning we issued earlier, when Gani Adams in his treacherous, sycophantic and reactionary move turned on the good people of Lagos unleashing violence and threat of violence against the perceived enemies of his paymasters.

“If Adams had not behaved like an omo ojuorolari, he should by now be defending the sacredness of the stool of the Oba of Lagos or any other one in Yorubaland for that matter.

“If Adams had not collected the billions he did, along with MASSOB and other ethnic groups, his co-travellers would now be degenerating and abusing our hospitality the way no one can replicate in their homelands.

“In closing, we enjoin all members of the OPC and indeed the Yoruba nation to beware of the enemies within like Gani Adams and with one voice condemn all fifth columnist within our fold. And with the foregoing it is abundantly clear that Gani Adams who brought this odium upon us must quit the OPC.”

Lagos: Train crushes man to death

An unidentified young man with earphone on was, Wednesday killed by a passenger train at Cappa area of Oshodi, Lagos.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who was inside the train reports that the man was standing on the rail track oblivious of the fast approaching train.

The NAN correspondent reports that the Ogun-Lagos-bound mass transit train was leaving its Oshodi station to Mushin when the accident occurred.

The train had as usual, sounded its horn repeatedly as it was approaching the railway crossing at Ilupeju Bye-pass for clearance of its track.

According to an eyewitness, the man who had his earphone on was apparently carried away with either the call he was receiving or listening to music.

“Obviously the man was not aware of the approaching train even as it blasted its horn, perhaps because of the earphone.

“Before he knew it, he was already hit by the train and was not given any chance to escape.

“Immediately he was hit, the body was mangled as the train dragged it underneath,’’ the eyewitness said.

NAN reports that people standing by the rail track that saw the incident raised their hands over their heads in a show of pity for the deceased.

“The man has suddenly and unwittingly lost his life to sheer carelessness,’’ a passenger said.

NAN reports that it was not the first time a moving train would crush to death people standing on the rail track because of having their earphones on.

Among them was a lady in 2006, killed at Shogunle GRA railway crossing, while another one was killed in 2007 at Oshodi.
