  • Lagos family loses property to adopted children

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has restrained Josiah Akinhanmi and the probate registrar from parading themselves as the administrators of the properties left behind by the late Madam Isabella Kofoworola Akinhanmi.

Justice Olajumoke Emeya issued the order last Friday while delievering judgement in a suit filed by John Alani Soluade and Funmilayo Akinbayo, beneficiaries of the will of the late Madam Akinhanmi.

The defendants in the suit are Akinhanmi, an engineer who represented the family of the late Pa Joshua Akinhanmi, husband to the late Madam Akinhanmi; the Probate Registrar; administratotrs of the estate of Pa Akinhanmi; Incorpotarted trustees of the First Anglican Mission and the Administrator-General of Lagos State.

Justice Emeya restrained the first and third defendants; the Probate Registrar; Lagos State; their agents; caretakers; privies and successors-in-title or assigns from interfering in the administration of the properties situated at 174 and 186 Murtalla Muhammed Way, Ebute Metta, Lagos, left behind by the late Madam Akinhanmi.

They were also barred from collecting rents, annuity, royalties or any form of revenue whatsoever or ejecting tenants or managing and controlling the Ebute Metta properties.

The claimants, in a nine point relief contained in their amended statement of claim, had prayed the court to declare, among others, that the second defendant is not entitled to deal or dialogue with or consider any probate application from the first defendant in respect of the estate of late Madam Kofoworola Akinhanmi.

In addition, the claimants sought the court’s declaration that the first defendant has no title or interest in the estate of the late Madam Akinhanmi as relates to the Ebute Metta properties.

They also sought a declaration that the first and second claimants and Mrs. Cicilia Abike Osoba are beneficiaries of late Madam Akinhanmi in respect of the Ebute Metta properties.

In their amended statement of defence, the first defendant urged the court to uphold that the claimants are not adopted children of late Madam Kofoworola Akinhanmi, who died childless.

The defendants wanted the court to uphold that the late Pa Akinhanmi, who died in January 1938, was the original owner of the two properties at Ebute Metta .

Among issues listed for determination by the defendants were that the court should determine that the claimants have failed to establish that the late Madam Akinhanmi made a valid Will that could give the Ebute Metta properties to them (the claimants).

Justice Emeya based her judgement on two issues; whether the will of late Kofoworola Akinhanmi dated July 9, 1984 was valid and that of the custody of the first defendant.

In her judgement, the judge held that the late Madam Akinhanmi, validly adopted the first claimant having taken him in to nurse him since he was six years old and sent him to school.

She held that the copy of the Will found with the probate registrar and the one at the office of Abiola Oshodi, the solicitor to to the late Madam Akinhanmi, though not signed nor witnessed by anyone as her last Will and testament, were the same.

The judge said the late Madam Akinhanmi’s solicitor’s office was the proper place for her Will to be kept.

She said she believed that Madam Akinhanmi was of sound mind and had the capacity to make the Will as at the time she died as the issue of her ability was not in contention.

  • UK team visits Lagos technical college

UK team visits Lagos technical college

A team of United Kingdom (UK) delegates has paid a visit to the Government Technical College, Ikeja.

This is to further the exchange programme between the two bodies.

The visit, which is the fifth of its kind by the team, is to further strengthen the relationship between the five technical colleges in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the ministry is committed to facilitating the connection with schools in Lagos and UK.

She said: “It’s a kind of partnership meant for us to see what they are doing there that is good, and we can copy. At the same time, they (UK) want to see what we are doing because these days, I don’t think anybody or any part of the world has monopoly of knowledge.”

Mrs Oladunjoye took the delegates led by Principal, Paignton Community and Sports Academy, Paigton, Mrs Jane English for a facility tour of the college, especially the state-of-the-art Samsung Academy built in the school premises.

Mrs Oladunjoye added: “Technology is the way out of the woods and we are ensuring that we have technological equipment to build the capacity of our teachers and ensure that our students have skills that will make them employable. Even today, you must have skills that will make you employable and not just any kind of knowledge.”

Mrs Jane English said her team’s visit aims at developing links with school in Lagos and UK.

She said: “We have been quite successful with this already. Many more schools in the UK will like to develop their links with Lagos schools which also enjoy having a link with UK schools. The link doesn’t just last for a short period of time. While am here, it will take place over a year or two. We would use technology, skype to get our children to talk to each other. The purpose of linking the two schools is to develop international understanding and also share good practice among the teaching staff.”

The Executive Secretary Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Olawunmi Gasper, noted that the visit encourages exposure and boosts school to school exchange programme.

“We send our teachers down; they are here now; some teachers were there last year, it’s all about exposure of our teachers and also to allow them see us the way we are and what we do,” he added

  • Lagos pupils prepare for debate

    Lagos pupils prepare for debate

Single-sex schools are better for students’, ‘Nigeria should stop taking foreign aid,’ and ‘Oil producing states are doing the nation more harm than good”, are some of the 54 topics that pupils of public secondary schools in Lagos State will be debating on from this week in the Season V of the Lagos Schools Debate.

Debating teams of 64 senior secondary schools in the competition received grooming on how to handle their topics and improve their public speaking skills at a grooming session held at the Lagos State Education Resource Centre last Thursday.

Lead Consultant for the debate and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gradient Hills, Mr Ivor Ekpe, exposed the pupils, many of whom had never debated before, to the principles good debaters must know to be successful including confidence, research, clarity of delivery, appearance, planning and team work.

He told The Nation that since the competition started five years ago, participants have improved with each new edition.

“I think in the last five years that I have been doing this, every year has shown a slight improvement. They speak better and dress better. If you have a large pool of very confident, presentable, well spoken individuals, you then have better opportunity for people who can represent your company or the state at work and play. They stand a better chance in a competitive environment,” he said.

Addressing the pupils, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the state government takes the programme seriously because of its contribution to the speaking and cognitive skills of the pupils.

She urged them to work hard to excel in the competition. She added that even if they do not all win, the skills they gain in the process would help them for life.

“It is a sustainable programme and it deserves the best of attention. It is to ensure that we have a brighter, rewarding future for you; to ensure that you are able to speak well, have analytical minds and be able to think on your feet. Work as hard as you can. Even if you don’t win, you would have participated. Most of those who have been participating are already doing well even in the university,” she said.

After this group of 64, 32 schools will proceed to the next stage.

  • Bringing back ‘spirit of Lagos’

    Bringing back ‘spirit of Lagos’

Looking fagged out, the man was overwhelmed with frustration. He seethed with rage as he struggled with his car to meander through the deplorable road in the Bariga area of Lagos Mainland. Besides the potholes that had turned the fairly long route to a hell on earth, various vehicles haphazardly parked left and right on the road had narrowed it down.

Sadly, when he felt it was time to heave a sigh of relief after the tortuous 100-metre nightmarish trip, his headache worsened as a makeshift mechanic workshop right on the road ended his journey through the route.

In utter exasperation and obviously at his wits end, he stormed out of the car, leaned on it as he held his head in his palms, staring furiously at a sordid spectacle some dingy workmen sweating it out on two ramshackle cars, apparently seeing no wrong in what they were doing on a public utility!

“Oh God; gone are the days when Lagos was Lagos!” He thundered as his palms made a spontaneous landing on the bonnet of his stalked car. Short of words, he pulled off his flowing agbada, entered his car and put it on the reverse to begin another head-splitting journey out of the entanglement.

This repulsive scenario, among such countless indices of indiscipline on the part of some Lagos residents, which have caused progressive erosion of the glory of the metropolis, is the main concern of a rescue group of Lagosians that has for over four years now, operated under the name, Spirit of Lagos. The group, led by its Project Coordinator, Mr Niyi Omotosho, is dreaming big, seeking attitudinal change through fundamental re-orientation of the citizenry.

To the group, no amount of effort put by any administration into re-ordering any system would yield the desired fruits unless the people shed off their odious toga of indiscipline. To it, with the efforts it has injected into recreating Lagos so far, the Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration in the state has no reason to suffer sleepless nights over the social and environmental nuisance across the land if a good number of residents imbibe the ‘spirit of Lagos’ by eschewing indecent habits that have made the desired change a mirage.

Why would a motorist not suppress the animalistic instinct in him and voluntarily obey traffic light at a junction even while not under the watch of traffic wardens? Why would a trader choose to display his wares on a pedestrian bridge on an expressway, thus inhibiting human movement? Even when the council officials and security personnel look the other way, can a celebrant have the compunction that it is wrong to hold her birthday party on a street? These are among the one-million-and-one posers that, according to Omotosho, prompted the conception and birth of the spirit of Lagos.

In an encounter with reporters, Omotosho’s trademark sprightly mien lost its cheer as he reeled off diverse indices of the rot that had robbed the metropolis of its allure of yester-years. “We can’t leave things in the hands of government ad-infinitum without doing our part in our interest,” he intoned.

He further explained: “The spirit of Lagos is the embodiment of all things good about Lagos and the very lifeline that connects its glorious past with its future that we dream of…There is now the need to revisit its fundamentals, restore them, share them and protect them. For this dream to become a reality, residents of Lagos must start consciously thinking change as a precursor for a behavioural change to complement and sustain the extraordinary physical infrastructural and economic development going on in the state.

“Unearthing the great spirit of Lagos, it is necessary to look in four cardinal dimensions of behaviour and through multi-layered outlets seek to present its essence in a way that residents of Lagos can identify with and be inspired to action by. In the area of social justice, historically, Lagos has always been a fair and just place to live both in terms of access to recourse for injustice and a collective responsibility to fight wrong to an individual or a group. History is replete with examples of these acts of liberation that make everyone “free” in Lagos. These will be reenacted and presented to reawaken Lagosians to a spirit that should never die through indifference and a lack of information of all that the government continues to put in place to ensure justice for all in Lagos and what individuals and groups are also doing to maintain their freedom.”

Harping on civic responsibility, Omotosho recalled that Lagos developed through the selfless contributions of its residents based on one fact: a clear understanding that everyone has a part to play in the wellbeing of their environment. The civic understanding taught in schools and at home and lived out through voluntary organisations like the Boys’ Scout, Girls’ Guide, Brigade et cetera, he noted, constituted the bedrock of the society and the base for character building. “This is the true spirit of Lagos which must be restored and preserved as an antidote to a sense of entitlement and reliance on others and government,” added.

Equally uncomfortable with the worsening value somersault in the city, a member of the group, Anthony Ajero, echoed Omotosho’s concern, saying: “No society thrives without a clear understanding of and a commitment to what it means to be a citizen and a willingness to comply with those rules. Voluntary commitment to maintain law and order is the basis for peaceful enjoyment for all. For Lagos to truly take its place in the league of cities, its residents must embrace the citizenship spirit as manifested in all aspects of living including, traffic, sanitation, health and safety and patriotism.” He added that the group’s ongoing campaign would demonstrate and entrench the true spirit of Lagos through enlightenment and behavioural modeling for motivation and inspiration.

They were unanimous in the view that “nowhere is the true spirit of Lagos better demonstrated than the way people relate with and care for one another, especially the vulnerable,” noting: “It is an indication of the closeness of larger human family demonstrated by all for one, one for all”. “Lagos personified this bond of humanity and this sprit should be restored to challenge the pervading selfish inclination that is now threatening the health of the society.

“We are Lagosians who love, and are determined to restore the true spirit of Lagos – that spirit of responsible freedom; of communal individuality and a commitment to law and order; that spirit of give and take, and of global excellence for which our Lagos has long been known,” Omotosho said.

  • ‘Why Lagos is reviewing Customary Court laws‘

The Lagos State Customary Laws is being reviewed to accommodate criminal law, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, has said.

He spoke at a workshop organised for Customary Court Judges by the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission in Ikeja.

He said some criminal offences would, henceforth, be handled by customary courts.

Ipaye said the government was inclined to accept suggestions from those advocating that some neighbourhood criminal offences of lesser gravity be handled at the local level.

“We are bringing this power back. When we do, we rely on you to display appropriate sense of responsibility in dispensing justice,” he said.

He urged customary court judges to apply criminal laws only in extreme cases when the criminal jurisdiction  is restored.

Part of the reasons why criminal laws were initially expunged from the law books was to prevent judges at the local level from being influenced and using their position to send people to prison arbitrarily, he said.

Ipaye urged the  judges to shun corruption.

Former chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House Assembly, Abdul-Lateef Hakeem lamented that some people resort to self- help and engage in jungle justice because they have lost faith in the system.

Hakeem, who delivered a key-note address on the theme, “Administration of justice at the grassroots:Myth or Reality”, admonished the judges against miscarriage of justice, stressing that they should use their position to influence the life of other members of the society positively.

Quoting several passage from the Bible, Hon. Hakeem told judges to administer justice fairly. He reminded them that they were writing their own history in everything that they do.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayotunde Phillips, who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Registrar of the state High Court, Mrs. A.O. Soladoye charged the judges to maintain a high level of honesty and integrity in the administration of justice at the grassroots.

“Remember that the Lagos State judiciary is the foremost judiciary in the country and we must be seen to be maintaining that lead,” she said.

The Executive Secretary, Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, Mrs. Ayodele Odugbesan said jurisdiction is important at all levels of the courts in the state.

Mrs. Odugbesan said this was why high premium is place on the training and re-training of judges, particularly customary court judges.

    Oniru, Elegushi beaches

The loss of the once popular Bar beach to ocean surge and the shut down of the near-by Kuramo beach has turned out to be the gain of private beaches like Oniru and Elegushi beaches in Lagos. The privately-owned beaches are little more organized than the public ones like Alfa and Eleko. Added to the fact that they are located within the town, they have become quite attractive to fun seekers. For those who appreciate the more lively atmosphere to celebrate the lovers’ day, these beaches would not be a bad idea. They have good parking spaces and security is quite commendable.

It combines rich African content in terms of culinary, arts and general aesthetics, with the finest modernity has to offer to make visitors have a good time. The resort has, in its tradition, put together a package for this lovers’ day.

It has two Valentine Day packages, tagged “Nature, Sea, Sand and Love”, starting from Friday to the next Sunday at the resort in Ikegun, Lagos, and the club, located on Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja.

The club will also host a ‘Thank God Its Valentine’ (TGIV) on Valentine’s Day. The club resort has packaged Nature, Sea, Sand and Love, which it says will provide lovers a platform to connect, cherish and celebrate Valentine’s Day. It is well-known that music paves the path to unwind and resonate with our loved ones. This has led us to believe that it is integral for us to facilitate an avenue that fosters this sentiment.

The events offer lovers the opportunity to celebrate their love at a romantic, outdoor concert under the stars, along with an eternal musical sojourn. According to the management, the vision for the packages was to convey a high impact message by way of delivering an exciting and interesting night, featuring artistes from diverse spectrum and to make this enterprise an annually celebrated carnival.

    Other places…

The Ikogosi Warm Spring Resort, Ekiti

If this were to be written last year or year before, it may not have been wise to wise recommend the place to lovers. The environment is serene with tree and quiet ambience to savour.
