  • Five popular Lagos neighbourhoods IJGBs love to stay

Five popular Lagos neighbourhoods IJGBs love to stay

Every December, Lagos transforms into Africa’s festive heartbeat — a city alive with music, energy, and the unmistakable return of the IJGBs (“I Just Got Backs”). These are Nigerians who live abroad and fly home for Detty December, bringing with them fresh accents, bold fashion, and a hunger for premium Lagos experiences.

They arrive from all corners of the world, drawn by the city’s blend of nostalgia, luxury, and beautiful chaos. From beachfront apartments to rooftop parties, some neighbourhoods become their playgrounds — buzzing with culture, connection, and non-stop excitement.

Here are five Lagos neighbourhoods IJGBs can’t resist during the holiday season:

    1. Lekki Phase 1

If there’s a capital of IJGB life, it’s Lekki Phase 1. The area boasts more Airbnbs, influencers, and brunch cafés per square kilometre than anywhere else in Lagos. From food trucks and art pop-ups to pool parties and rooftop hangouts, Lekki is where the action never stops. Everyone knows someone, and every night turns into another outing. For returnees chasing comfort, convenience, and the full Detty December experience, Lekki remains unbeatable.

    2. Victoria Island (V.I.)

Victoria Island is Lagos luxury at its peak. It offers everything an IJGB could dream of — five-star hotels, private lounges, waterfront apartments, and iconic nightclubs like Quilox and DNA. The area attracts young professionals, celebrities, and entrepreneurs who want to blend business with leisure. Whether it’s a yacht party, a power brunch, or a quiet evening overlooking the skyline, V.I. delivers sophistication with an edge.

    3. Ikoyi

For those who prefer elegance over chaos, Ikoyi is home. It’s peaceful, secure, and lined with leafy streets, embassies, and some of Lagos’s most prestigious estates. But beneath the calm lies subtle excitement — sleek restaurants, hidden bars, and high-end apartments perfect for IJGBs who love privacy with style. With Banana Island nearby, Ikoyi offers refined living and understated glamour.

    4. Ikeja

Ikeja is the gateway to Lagos and often the first stop for many IJGBs touching down for the holidays. Close to the airport and home to major malls, hotels, and lounges, Ikeja balances convenience with energy. It’s lively yet affordable, central but less frantic than the island. For many returnees, it’s the ideal base to reconnect with family while staying plugged into the Detty December scene.

    5. Yaba

Yaba is where Lagos’s creative spirit shines brightest — less glitz, more grit. It’s the hub for tech startups, streetwear brands, art shows, and rooftop music sessions. For IJGBs seeking authenticity and connection with “real Lagos,” Yaba delivers. It’s a lively mix of old-school charm and youthful innovation — the city’s cultural heartbeat in motion.

Tinubu poised to end terrorism, tackle sponsors – Lagos lawmaker

With the level of growth Nigeria has experienced in recent times, the Bola Tinubu government deserves commendations, support and international collaboration, a Lagos lawmaker has said.

Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, representative of Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said this in a statement on Friday urging President Donald Trump, the American President, to reconsider his stand on the happenings in Nigeria.

The lawmaker said President Tinubu understands the challenges and as a result, he has never stopped strengthening the nation’s security architecture as seen in the recent change of guard in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“President Bola Tinubu, as a father, is not happy that bandits, terrorists or whatever name-tag they have got, have tried to downplay the gains of the administration just as they did with previous administrations.

“This is one reason the President ordered the recently appointed service chiefs in Nigeria to put a final end to insecurity in the country. The current administration will never pamper terrorists or their sponsors,” he said.

Adewale, a ranking lawmaker, said in the last two years, countries and various global organisations have acknowledged the growing economic successes recorded by the current administration.

“The Tinubu administration continues to open more economic pathways for progress. Different data have shown inflation dropping for the first time in years. More than before, the administration has attracted multi-billion dollar investments while working to reinvigorate moribund industries and maintain its place as the giant of Africa.

Economic indices continue to prove that the government is on the right track and this has reflected in the country’s currency continuously gaining weight.

“For the first time, the sub-national governments are comfortable because they now have a level of economic power.

“Thus, what Nigeria deserves at this time is global collaboration from the US and other nations in the interest of the citizens. Our youth and citizens must continue to be patient and trust in the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the government.

“We must encourage Nigeria’s new service chiefs to live up to expectations and do all that is necessary to ensure they put a final stop to insurgents in the country. Let’s continue to support the government’s giant strides knowing that the results would best fit our yearnings,” he said.

Lagos reaffirms commitment to ease Lekki–Epe traffic

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to easing traffic congestion and improving mobility along the Eti-Osa/Lekki–Epe Expressway.

The Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, said this on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ engagement.

He said the meeting was convened to foster collaboration, deepen public understanding and ensure inclusive participation in the project’s implementation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state government engaged key stakeholders ahead of rehabilitation works between Admiralty Junction and Jubilee Bridge, Ajah.

The project is scheduled to begin on 6 Nov 6.

Daramola said the proactive step would help build unity towards ensuring smoother traffic flow and reducing the daily hardship faced by commuters and residents.

He acknowledged the difficulties endured on the corridor, noting that the government was committed to addressing them.

“This meeting is about carrying everyone along. We are not just rehabilitating a road; we are enhancing lives and connecting communities,” he said.

He explained that the 20-kilometre stretch had served the city for decades and required urgent repairs to restore efficiency and safety.

According to him, the works form part of a broader plan to integrate the Green Line Rail and other transport projects to reduce pressure on the corridor.

“Lagos is a city in motion. This project ensures the Lekki–Epe corridor supports growth and development. It is a short-term inconvenience for long-term progress,” he added.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said traffic management and enforcement would be strengthened during construction.

He assured that officers would be deployed round-the-clock to ease movement and limit disruptions, alongside ongoing public sensitisation.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, commended residents for participating in the deliberations.

He urged continued support for traffic management officials and encouraged collective efforts to manage the situation.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure, Mr Olutokunbo Oyenuga, said the rehabilitation would be completed early next year.

He said the upgrade would tackle chronic congestion and pavement deterioration, enhancing connectivity and reducing travel time.

Oyenuga described the corridor as critical to residential, commercial and industrial activities in Lagos’ eastern axis.

He added that the works align with government plans to deliver durable roads and improve living standards.

Stakeholders, including Mrs Mojirola Afolayan-Soote, Mr Lanre Badmus and Mr Gbenga Bello, called for improved alternative routes and signage.

  • FG to demolish, rebuild 3 spans of Iddo Bridge in Lagos

FG to demolish, rebuild 3 spans of Iddo Bridge in Lagos

The Federal Government will demolish and rebuild three major spans of the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, which has suffered structural damage from a fire caused by illegal occupants and repeated collisions with trucks.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, stated this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen at the bridge site in Lagos.

She said the repair which was part of the Federal Government’s plan to address structural defects and restore the bridge to a safe and durable state, would last about three months.

According to her, heavy and articulated vehicles will be restricted from using the bridge beginning from next weekend, to allow for the installation of height barriers and the commencement of the repair work.

She said after that, on Nov. 22, demolition of the bridge deck proper would start.

She said the diversions would start from Apapa bound to Carta Bridge bound and would be counterflow.

“We are here to inform Lagosians that the Iddo Bridge will soon be closed to articulated vehicles.

“This restriction is necessary because the bridge has not received proper attention for many years and now requires urgent repairs,” she said.

Kesha noted that while the demolition and reconstruction would take place in phases, the Apapa-bound section would be the first to be worked on.

She said traffic would be diverted to the Carter Bridge side, with a counterflow arrangement for light vehicles only.

The controller assured that the ministry had held meetings with relevant traffic and security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Police, to ensure smooth movement during the construction period.

She urged drivers, especially trailer and truck operators, to comply with diversion signs and use alternative routes through Eko Bridge, Costain, Third Mainland Bridge, and Herbert Macaulay Way.

“We don’t want accidents. That’s why we are creating awareness early, especially for truck drivers who may not get information through the media,” Kesha said.

She added that advocacy campaigns would also be taken to garages, parks, and transport unions to ensure widespread awareness of the planned restriction.

Kesha said the project, expected to be completed by early March 2026, was designed to enhance safety and improve traffic flow once fully reopened.

Gas tanker accident disrupts traffic flow in Lagos

Traffic along the Chisco axis inward Victoria Island was disrupted on Monday following an accident involving an upturned gas tanker, prompting emergency operations and a temporary diversion of vehicles in the area.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in coordination with other emergency responders, has commenced recovery efforts to safely remove the tanker from the road.

The incident occurred near the traffic light at the Chisco axis, causing significant delays for motorists heading towards Victoria Island.

In an official statement, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, said the operation would require the temporary closure of the main carriageway to ensure a “safe, swift, and professional recovery” of the tanker.

He said: “Motorists are strongly advised to exercise patience and cooperate with LASTMA officials and other emergency responders on the ground.”

According to him, efforts are being made to complete the evacuation within the shortest possible time and restore normal traffic flow.

He assured the public that the safety of all road users remains the top priority of the Lagos State Government and noted that an update would be issued once the evacuation process is completed.

  • Lagos compensates landlords for demolitions

    Lagos compensates landlords for demolitions

Lagos State government has commenced the payment of compensation to affected residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe Local Government Area, in fulfilment of its earlier promise to those impacted by the ongoing urban renewal and regeneration programme in the area.

The exercise, which began on October 23, 2025, was described as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to humane and inclusive urban development.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, the General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Olajide Animashaun, said the payment followed a series of verification, engagement, and enumeration exercises carried out in collaboration with community stakeholders.

According to Animashaun, the regeneration initiative became necessary due to the proliferation of illegal and dilapidated structures within Oworonshoki, many of which were built on drainage channels and waterways, posing serious environmental and safety risks.

“Oworonshoki is one of the communities earmarked under the state’s comprehensive urban renewal and regeneration plan. Many of the affected structures were unsafe for habitation and constituted environmental hazards. However, in line with the inclusive governance policy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state made a commitment to compensate verified affected residents and today, that promise is being fulfilled,” Animashaun stated.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Lagosians, noting that the payment exercise reflected the government’s sincerity and accountability in implementing its urban renewal policies.

Animashaun also commended the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, for their dedication and tireless efforts toward the realisation of the initiative.

The event was attended by representatives of the Oworonshoki traditional council, Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Council (CDC) members, civil society organisations, security agencies, and the media.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government had, in recent months, cleared several illegal and substandard structures across Oworonshoki as part of efforts to reclaim right-of-way for drainage systems, improve environmental conditions, and enhance public safety.

According to LASURA, a total of 79 beneficiaries were verified for compensation, to be paid in two batches, with the first group receiving their cheques on Thursday, while the second batch will be attended to on Friday at the same venue.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to journalists expressed gratitude to the state government for keeping its word.

One of them, Mrs Ajimoh Oyenuga, said: “The government gave us this money as compensation for the houses demolished on Precious Street, Oworonshoki. We are grateful because it shows that the government cares about our well-being.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Olaide Fatima, added: “My house was close to the water, and it wasn’t safe. The government promised to compensate us, and today they have done it. I really appreciate this gesture, promise made, promise kept.”

The LASURA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that urban renewal projects across Lagos are implemented with fairness and transparency, while prioritising the welfare of residents and communities affected by development projects

Lagos monarch calls for probe into demolition of shops, mosque in Costain

    • … describes act as inhumane

The traditional ruler of Otumara community, Ojo-Oniyun, Apapa Road, and its environs, High Chief Kehinde Kalejaiye, has appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the State Commissioner of Police, and the Lagos State House of Assembly to investigate the recent demolition in the Costain area of Lagos Mainland and provide relief for affected traders.

The appeal followed an operation on Thursday, October 23, 2025, during which shops, stalls, and a mosque were pulled down by officials of the Lagos State Task Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI). Eyewitnesses said the exercise, which began in the early afternoon, disrupted trading activities and displaced many business owners.

In a petition submitted to relevant state ministries and agencies through his solicitors, Kayode Ajala & Partners, Chief Kalejaiye urged the government to look into the incident and ensure the return of goods and cash allegedly seized during the exercise within 14 days. He also stated that the affected land, measuring about 1,040 square meters, was under a temporary occupation license issued by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works, and Housing in 2015.

    Several victims recounted their experiences.

A 79-year-old welder, Pa John Adeyi, said his tools and iron gates were taken before his shop was demolished.

“They came without notice, teargassed everywhere, and chased everyone away. I lost all my tools and cash. Two women fainted from the teargas and were rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Another trader, Mr. Alfred Wisdom, who produces snacks, said his shop and goods worth over ₦2 million were destroyed.

“They said my business was illegal. I was on my way to deliver goods when the Task Force arrived. Before I got back, everything was gone,” he lamented.

The Imam of the demolished Markaz-ul-Mahani Mosque, Ustadz Abdulsallam Olawale, also confirmed that the mosque was affected.

“They said they were clearing buses but ended up destroying traders’ and worshippers’ properties,” he said.

Many of the victims were reportedly among those displaced during an earlier demolition in the Otumara community six months ago.

As of the time of this report, the Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official statement explaining the reason for the demolition or any plans for compensation.

Supported by more than 80 volunteers, the outreach provided medical consultations, treatments, medication, and hygiene supplies, restoring hope to a community with limited access to healthcare.

“UBOMI is about restoring dignity, hope, and the assurance that every life matters,” said Leonard F. Thomas, Executive Director of Pistis Foundation. “By expanding healthcare access to the most underserved — from inner-city communities to correctional facilities — we are demonstrating that compassion has no boundaries.”

As Pistis Foundation prepares for UBOMI 8.0, it is seeking partnerships and support from individual donors, philanthropists, NGOs, corporate organisations, healthcare providers, and development agencies to scale its impact and reach more lives in need.
