Lagos judokas set for IBSA Grand Prix in Azerbaijan

Nigeria will be making its first appearance at the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) Judo Grand Prix in Azerbaijan as the Lagos judokas have been confirmed for the world ranking points event.

The trip is being  bankrolled by the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Judo Association (LSJA) under the chairmanship of Sheriff Hammed.

Also, Bina Foundation which is IBSA representative in Nigeria under the leadership  of lady Ifeoma Atuegwu, facilitated the participation of the athletes in their bid to garner points ahead of the 2024 Paralympic Games in France.

The National Gymnastics Arena in Baku will host the six-day tournament from September 22 to 28 as Nigeria will be competing at the tournament for the time.

The three-man team has Oladele Kekere and Grace Egbobi as athletes and they will be coached by Janet Omohodion. The athletes are at present warming up in camp in readiness for the tournament as they are expected to depart the country on September 22.

According to Hammed, the trip became necessary for the athletes to compete internationally against their counterparts while lauding Lagos State government for deeming it fit to bankroll the trip.

He said: “I am so happy that Lagos is achieving another first in judo as the first state in Nigeria to present athletes for the IBSA Grand Prix which is another motivation for judokas across the state. I am also elated that this is coming at a time when judo is taking a leap in the country.

“This is a rare opportunity for the athletes as they etch their name in the annals of history as the first Nigerian athletes to compete at IBSA event and we hope and believe the experience would be handy for them going forward.”

“ In Lagos, we are always setting the pace and we hope other states will take a cue from this by encouraging their athletes who are challenged to aim high in the sport. We are grateful to our governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the gesture and we will continue to put Lagos on the world map as our athletes fly Nigeria’s flag for the first time in such international championships,” he closed.

Apart from competing, the athletes will be part of the training camp which will take place after the championships on September 28 to October 4 at the Sumgayit Olympic Sports Complex in Baku.

  • Lagos-Abuja superhighway

    Lagos-Abuja superhighway

    • A big dream of entrenched infrastructure; a clear peep into Nigeria’s economic future

The idea of a Lagos-Abuja superhighway, doing the trip in between four and six hours, cannot but excite travellers.  The 717.7-kilometre journey now takes no less than 12 hours.

The very idea, from the Works and Housing minister, Senator David Umahi, former governor of Ebonyi State, is an affirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s continuity of the acute infrastructure focus of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari.  Umahi’s sizzling talk is matched by his glittering infrastructure record in Ebonyi State.

It is also a grand vision of what an infrastructure-powered Nigerian economy would be in a few years, if the Tinubu government walks the minister’s brilliant and visionary talk.  Infrastructure, after all, is not only the spur but also the backbone of the economy.

How would Lagos to Abuja (and vice-versa), even in six hours, feel?  For starters, halving the 12-hour travel time.  If it’s four hours, that is two-thirds reduction of the present travel time.  That’s almost magical!

Then, look at value, both private and business.  A traveller after six hours is definitely fresher than someone on the road for 12 hours.  Then, cargo: less time on the road delivering bulk is clear reduction in costs.  That, other things being equal, should reduce inflation.

Then, human wellness: the shorter a driver spends en route to his destination, the higher his ability to stay alert; and the rarer, needless road crashes.

Besides, the choice of infrastructure ministers: that Umahi is succeeding Babatunde Fashola, who like Umahi also distinguished himself in infrastructure, both as thinker-governor of Lagos and as Works and Housing minister, just shows the federal emphasis on infrastructure is not about to shift.  That’s good and welcome news.

But away from individuals and ministries: Umahi’s proposed superhighway opens a riveting prospect of mutual cooperation and healthy competition in core project deliveries, by the cluster of infrastructure ministries: Transport, Works and Housing, Aviation and Marine economy.

A Lagos-Abuja superhighway speaks to a Lagos-Abuja super speed train, perhaps in no more than four hours too.  A part-answer to that is already in the Lagos-Ibadan-Kano standard gauge rail.  The standard gauge is designed for faster trains.

The Abuja-Kaduna rail is a section of the Lagos-Kano rail — indeed, its first completed segment, with former President Goodluck Jonathan earning the credit, for his government completed the project in December 2014, though President Buhari inaugurated its commercial shuttle service in July 2016.

So, whatever challenged Umahi to work on the Lagos-Abuja superhighway should also challenge Mu’azu Jaji Gambo, the transportation minister, to work on the Lagos-Abuja rail.

The 312-Km Lagos-Ibadan section is already in service.  Incidentally, a Lagos-Abuja high-speed train (615 km) is already embedded in the plan — and the Lagos-Ibadan section has already taken more than half of that.

So, the new transportation minister (his job pared down to just rail and auto) has his job well cut out for him.  If he cannot surpass the passion of Rotimi Amaechi, the Buhari-era rail czar, he has no business not matching it.  The health and future of the Nigerian economy may well depend on his drive.

Just imagine the value the delivery of cargo by rail, its likely cheaper cost, aside from longer lives of Nigerian highways!

But the utmost driver of core infrastructure is funding.  President Buhari did most of it by tapping into the debt market — with its sweet-sour — including Sukuk bonds, and leveraging recovered stolen funds.

President Tinubu would have to look for more sustainable funding: a bigger tax haul, right pricing to generate revenue from already existing rail shuttles — human and cargo; highway maintenance tolling, and corporates’ road building from tax rebates (a funding strategy embedded under Fashola which is still in practice) — and maybe a smaller size of the debt market too.  Mass rail, if well managed, can always pay its way, with Nigeria’s ready and booming market.

Still, thinking of cluster funding, Marine and Blue economy could prove a game-changer to fund infrastructure, if somehow it embraces smart revenue-harvesting practices.  Its operation is basically revenue-spinning.  A part of its earning could be devoted to infrastructure funding, after upgrading ports’ infrastructure.

Umahi’s Lagos-Abuja superhighway dream is more than just roads.  It’s a metaphor for infrastructure as a spur of the economy and its sustainable funding.  It’s the right focus and direction to go.  All that is required is fresh — and critical — thinking.

  • Lagos, Borno, three others ranked top food, nutrition-insecure states

Lagos, Borno, three others ranked top food, nutrition-insecure states

Lagos, Borno, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, and Kano states have the highest number of people experiencing crises of food and nutrition insecurity in the country, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF stated that according to the Cadre Harmonisé report, 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria, a total of 17.6 million Nigerians were in crisis due to the emergency situation of food and nutrition insecurity.

The report further revealed that between March to May this year, the top five food and nutrition insecure states were: Lagos, 1,596,099; Borno, 1,553,499; Katsina, 1,314,123; Kaduna, 1,222,929; Jigawa, 1,063,633; and Kano, 1,006,542.

UNICEF, therefore, urged Federal and State Governments to ramp up interventions and domestic funding for nutrition across the country, particularly for children, as this will not only impact their survival but will impact their overall socio-economic contributions to society.

Speaking in Port Harcourt during a media dialogue on child malnutrition, with a focus on nutrition financing, UNICEF’s Communication Specialist, Geoffrey Njoku called for increased budgetary allocation for nutrition, and the timely release of the funds.

He said: “We have a nutrition problem in Nigeria, and it is particularly bad for children. Although UNICEF and other partners are supporting Nigeria to combat malnutrition, the government is not putting enough money into ending the country’s nutrition problems. The government needs to put its own money into dealing with malnutrition.”

In her remarks, the Head of the Child Rights Information Department of the Federal Ministry of Information, Najaatu Hassan, who was represented by Temitoye Falayi said: “Through the media, we have achieved some success in the nutrition space, however, we can do more. We want the Federal Government to commit more funds to nutrition for children and their future. We want to make sure that malnutrition is a thing of the past so that we can focus on other areas of children’s survival.”

In her presentation, Nkeiru Enwelum, nutrition officer of UNICEF said: “While there are 35 million children under the age of five in Nigeria, 12 million of them are stunted, and 3 million are wasted. Also, Nigeria is currently ranked first in Africa and second globally in terms of the number of children who are malnourished.

“The government must therefore commit more money for health, and ensure that there is more health for the money committed through accountability and transparency mechanisms. Also, mothers need to exclusively breastfeed their babies for at least six months, which will guarantee their physical and mental growth and development.”

One killed, another injured as police, youths clash in Lagos

One person was yesterday confirmed dead and another injured after police operatives and youths clashed in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

The fight which broke out in the early hours of the day, led to the temporary blockage of major expressways along the corridor as angry youths set bonfires on the highways.

Although the cause of the fight was not known, it was gathered that some aggrieved youths had taken to the streets to protest the current hardship occasioned by the high cost of petrol.

In the course of their protest, they were said to have prevented vehicular movements on the busy port corridor.

To prevent their action from grounding economic activities across the country, it was gathered that policemen were immediately deployed to the scene but the situation rather got out of hands.

Another account of the incident claimed that the policemen alleged shot at a driver for refusing to part with a usual amount of money paid the Taskforce. It was alleged that it was the shooting of the river that triggered unrest in the area as his aggrieved colleagues took to the streets in protest.

Earlier reports on the incident indicated that the policemen were from the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), an allegation the agency refuted in a statement yesterday evening.

Noting that its personnel were only deployed to Freedom Park, Ojota, and Maryland to maintain peace and orderliness where a rally by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, was scheduled, Taskforce chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, noted that residents usually mistook other police units as Taskforce.
