APC slams DSS for linking party with Boko Haram

    •Threatens to sue Ogar

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday condemned the thinly-veiled attempt by the Directorate of Security Service (DSS) to link it with the Boko Haram sect without providing a shred of evidence to that effect.

The APC asked the agency’s spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, to resign or be fired.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement yesterday in Ilorin that his party has also decided to sue Ogar for attempting to blame the APC for the series of bomb blasts in the country.

This is to enable her present whatever evidence she may have of the party’s alleged complicity in a court of law.

The APC said the DSS “threw caution to the wind and exhibited its crass partisanship when the agency’s spokesperson, Ogar, said on national television that anytime the APC wins an election, there is no bomb blast, but that whenever other parties win, there is always a bomb blast.

‘’That this incredulous accusation could be made by the spokesperson of a security agency, without providing a scintilla of evidence to support such claim, has confirmed our fears that the nation’s security agencies have now constituted themselves into the enforcement arm of the PDP,” APC said and added: ‘’For the DSS spokesperson to echo the same capricious statement that has been made in the past by the spokesman of the PDP shows that the agency has dropped its toga of non-partisanship and has descended into the political fray. If the DSS has any professional ethics, if DSS is not an arm of the PDP, then the agency must publicly dissociate itself from the irresponsible and unfounded allegation by Ogar and disengage her from the service.

‘’Doing that will be the first step in restoring the credibility, or whatever is left of it, of the DSS. In the alternative, we challenge the DSS to present to Nigerians any evidence it may have linking our party to the spate of bomb blasts in the country. After all, it is trite that he who alleges must prove.’’

The party said since it won the election in Osun, Ogar has been struggling hard to discredit it and its victory, including making a spurious allegation that the party offered the DSS N14 million as a bribe and also trying to make a joke of the arrest of the party’s spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, for no other reason than that he belongs to the opposition.

The APC said: ‘’Institutions of state like the DSS must know that their responsibility is to the nation, not to any political party that may be having a transient hold on power, that their loyalty is to the nation, not to any individual. This way, the institutions will keep their integrity intact and also serve the nation properly.

Irrespective of the government in power, institutions of state must stay above the fray, in line with best practices.

‘’This is a lesson that should not be hard for the fellows over there at the DSS to understand, going by the antecedents of their agency. However, where they choose to play politics with their professionalism and integrity, they will soon realize there are working in an agency that is not worth its salt, one that has lost the respect of the citizenry,’’ it said.

•Narrates ordeal in the hands of security agents

National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, declared  yesterday that his arrest in Osogbo on Friday in  Gestapo Style by hooded security agents was  for no reason than that  he belongs to the opposition.

He said his harassment demonstrates the level of illegality, lawlessness, anarchy and intolerance to which Nigeria has descended under the watch of President Goodluck Jonathan.  In a statement in Osogbo shortly after he was released, Alhaji Mohammed said he was arrested along with Mr. Sunday Dare, Media Aide to APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Mr. Afolabi Salisu, Deputy Chief of Staff to Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

‘’We were being driven to the Government House when we were stopped at a military check point by men in military and DSS uniforms, all hooded and armed to the teeth with AK-47 assault rifles, pistols and other weapons. Since there was no curfew in Osun State and people were moving around freely, we felt it was a routine check.

‘’Suddenly, the men, some of them apparently drunk, ordered us out of the car, took our phones, pointed their assault rifles at our heads and said ‘you are under arrest’. They herded us into their bus like animals and drove away. There is no doubt that they knew who we are because I introduced myself!

‘’From our encounter with our tormentors, there is also no doubt that these were not just soldiers and DSS officials, there were also ex-militants and thugs, all clad in military and DSS uniforms but apparently lacking in any training. We also witnessed how men in military and DSS uniform fired their guns at the gate leading to the residence of Senator Isiaka Adeleke to force it open!

‘’We asked them why we were being arrested, but they ignored our question as they drove for close to one hour before veering into a compound that turned out to be the offices of the DSS. There, we met people who had been previously arrested and stripped of their clothing, many of them bloodied from the beatings to which they must have been subjected.

‘’We were herded to one side as our tormentors marched around triumphantly, in what could well have been a scene from Ukraine.  We were waiting for our turn to be stripped of our apparels and taken along with those who were arrested earlier to the DSS cells when a man who is apparently a senior DSS official intervened and ordered our release. The men who arrested us, apparently unhappy at the order to set us free, rejected the order, until the man asserted his authority and even accompanied us to where we were arrested.

‘’Back there, we discovered that our driver has been badly beaten and even robbed of his personal belongings by the same security agents being paid by the taxpayers to protect the citizens, whose ranks have now been swelled, willingly, by thugs and ex-militants, armed and dressed in official uniforms by the PDP and sanctioned by the Jonathan-led Federal Government!

‘’This arrest is not about Lai Mohammed, Sunday Dare or Afolabi Salisu, whoever we may be, but about the constitutionally-guaranteed rights of Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians, to move around freely, associate with any party of their choice and express their opinions without being molested or arrested.

‘’The way and manner we were harassed, arrested and dehumanised on Friday night show that Nigerian citizens can no longer be sure that the security agents they encounter on the roads or anywhere else are well-trained and highly-disciplined men and women in the military, police, DSS and others that we used to know. What we have now are Jonathan’s soldiers, policemen and DSS officials who have since stopped working for the nation but are now the enforcement arm of the PDP.”

Alhaji Mohammed said  that even as he was putting down his own ordeal in writing  scores of other APC leaders and supporters were still being  harassed and arrested across Osun State especially in Ifelodun Local Government Ward 10, Atakumosa East Local Government and Ife East Local Government, Okerewe Wards 2 and 3.

‘’Our party, the APC, has no doubt whatsoever that the depravity being exhibited under President Jonathan’s watch, in the name of politics, has his imprimatur. We have no doubt that elections, which should be a celebration of democracy, have now been turned to war because of the desperation of President Jonathan to win re-election at all costs. We have no doubt that the anarchic Minister of State for Defence and Minister of Police Affairs, who are leading the ‘’troops’’ in Osun as they did in Ekiti, are taking their cue from President Jonathan,” he said.

He wondered why those Ministers could move around freely in Osun and elsewhere, while other Nigerians, irrespective of the party they belong to are denied the same right.

    •Alleges state-sponsored terror

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday that no fewer than 250 of its leaders and supporters had been arrested by security operatives before and during the governorship election there.

The party dubbed the development state sponsored political terror and demanded an immediate halt to it.

‘’At this point, APC is constrained to alert Nigerians and the international community that what is going on now in Osun State Nigeria is not an election but a coup against democracy,’’ the party said in a statement issued in Osogbo by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

‘’This is definitely not an ordinary election. It is the total hijack of the process and direct violation of the rights of the people. Osun State has been turned into a theater of war. An ongoing state-sponsored political terror against the Osun people and the entire people of Nigerians has been unleashed by an elected President against his own people, against his own country, in an unprecedented act of political desperation.

‘’As at 11 am this morning (yesterday), over 250 APC members and leaders have been arrested all over the state by the security task force. The DSS alone has over 50 APC members in their custody. On the contrary, no single PDP member has been arrested so far. This is barbaric and constitutes an infringement on the constitutionally-guaranteed rights of those who have been arrested,’’ it said.

APC said the magnitude of arrests, the viciousness of the operation and the widespread intimidation of APC members have confirmed the party’s fears, which were expressed in several press statements ahead of the election.

The party said President Jonathan, in “an unparalleled desecration of national institutions, has simply turned the men and women in uniform against the people, as the entire security outfits now owe their allegiance to the President, rather than to the nation, and are at his beck and call.”

It said even as the election progresses, police officers from other neighboring states are being shipped into Osun to intimidate the state’s voters.

‘’PDP is not relenting in its plan to unleash terror and provoke violence after the accreditation of voters in order to prevent APC members from voting. Tear gas and gun shots will be released sporadically to scare voters from voting and create confusion at the poling units, so the agents of the PDP can substitute ballot papers and boxes,’’ APC said.

The party also alerted the people of Osun and indeed all Nigerians to the use of fake Youth Corpers to perpetrate massive rigging in the election, adding that the fake Youth Corpers, who were procured by a minister hijacked the accreditation of voters in many polling units.

According to the APC, NYSC members who had already been cleared and paid for the election were turned back in favour of the fake corps members in Ede South and Ede North allegedly procured by the minister.

It accused INEC of connivance in the illegality.

It listed its members who were arrested as including:

    – Alhaji Tijani Oladosu (aka TILAD), Quadri Owonikoko (a.k.a Integrity). Arrested about midnight, their whereabouts are still unknown

    – Lai Mohammed, Sunday Dare, and Afolabi Salisu. They were picked up before mid-night Friday by nine gun-toting masked DSS operatives and driven to the DSS headquarters in Osogbo. Harassed and deeply traumatized, they were finally released by DSS Saturday morning

    –  Over 40 voters, all APC members, arrested in Erin Osun while queueing for accreditation.

    – Alhaji Raimi Shitu, Vice Executive Secretary, Odo-Otin LG, arrested midnight

    – Chairman of O’SCHOOL in Osun and Chieftain of APC, Alhaji Lai Oyeduntan’s house invaded in Osogbo

    – APC stalwart and Octogenarian lawyer, Pa J.O Fakayode, being detained in Ora Igbomina after being picked up by security agents from Oke Ila

    – All APC agents in Osu, Atakumosa West, arrested by soldiers

    – All APC coordinators in Ifedayo LGA arrested.

-ASP Venture Onos, Second in Command, Police Command, Osun while on election duty, arrested for warning soldiers against the maltreatment of APC members.

    – Chief Abiola Ogundokun, PDP chieftain in Iwo, is leading a detachment of DSS agents to arrest APC leaders and key members.

    – All over Osun state, APC members are being chased and harassed by PDP thugs aided by security agents.

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Saturday said his arrest by security agents in Osogbo, Osun State, was because he belongs to the opposition.

He stated that his “Gestapo Style” arrest shows the level of illegality, lawlessness, anarchy and intolerance to which Nigeria has descended under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Osogbo, Mohammed said he was arrested along with Mr. Sunday Dare, the Media Aide to APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and Mr. Afolabi Salisu, the Deputy Chief of Staff to Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was  arrested by security agents in Osogbo, last night a few hours to today’s governorship election in Osun State.

He is one of the many leaders and supporters of the party seemingly targeted by soldiers and other security operatives.

About 30 student supporters of the  All Progressive Congress  (APC) in Osun State  had been picked up earlier in the day  in Ilesa in what the party said was part of the plan to intimidate it ahead of today’s governorship election.

Other  leaders of the party including the State Commissioner for Agriculture,Mr.Wale Adedoyin and the Chairman of Osogbo Local Government were also  abducted last night by suspected thugs of the PDP.

Alhaji Mohammed’s  personal assistant, Mr. Williams Adeleye, said in a statement at 11.57pm yesterday that he was on the phone with his principal when suddenly he heard voices saying : “you are under arrest, enter this vehicle.”

Mr. Adeleye said his subsequent attempts to reach his boss failed, as his numbers all rang out.

The 30 students, according to the Situation Room of the APC attend the College of Education,Ilesa.

Their arrest at Imala area of Ilesa was said to be at the instigation of a former minister from the area who personally led the soldiers to effect the clampdown.

It was unclear at press time where the students were kept, or their  destination.

Some of the arrested students  were named as Awowole Samuel, President, National Association of Nigerian Students, College of Ilesha Chapter, Dada Oluseyi, Ogunmode Suraju and  Odutola Olaniyi.

A member of the State House of Assembly representing Ilesa West , Fafowora Fafiyebi,  was separately  arrested as was  one Mickey Jaga.

They were both arrested by soldiers .

No reason  given for their arrests.

The police spokesperson in Osun State, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, denied knowledge of the arrests.

The APC  condemned  the arrests which it described as an unwarranted provocation of its members across the state.

The party’s  Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy,Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, asked the security agencies to refrain from getting partisan in the governorship poll.

The APC alleged that it was clear that the security men were  working for the PDP.

Agriculture Commissioner Adedoyin and the Osogbo council chairman were allegedly abducted  by PDP thugs in separate incidents.

Massive harassment of APC leaders and supporters  was also said to be going on last night in Ile Ife,Ilesa and Osogbo.

PDP leaders at a late night meeting yesterday in Ile-Ife resolved to ensure that no APC leader in Ife is allowed out of his house during today’s election.

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo was also burgled yesterday by unknown people.

  • 500,000 voter cards have been cloned, says APC

500,000 voter cards have been cloned, says APC

About 500,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been cloned in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

It said the cards, which were either unclaimed, not handed over to the authentic owners or were obtained fraudulently, were cloned to rig Saturday’s poll.

In a statement yesterday, APC National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed said: “These cloned cards, mostly in the hands of persons from states other than Osun, are to be used along with the authentic PVCs issued to the electorate during Saturday’s election.

“Already, we can confirm that the hundreds of thousands of people in possession of these cloned cards all over Nigeria, especially in states neighbouring Osun, are being induced monetarily and instructed to super impose their photographs on the cloned PVCs.

“The game plan is for them to arrive early at polling booths on the election day, where conniving electoral officials will turn a blind eye to this fraud by not checking whether or not the names of these impersonators with cloned cards are on the voters registers before accrediting them to vote at the expense of the genuine owners of the cards.

“According to the dubious plan, unscrupulous security agents – both official and unofficial – will be at hand to brutalise, arrest and detain any agent or voter who may want to challenge this illegality.”

“We urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), if it is not part of this diabolical plan, to ensure that only voters registers used to issue out PVCs to voters up till August 4 are used to conduct the election.

“We demand that copies of these registers, which are already in possession of local government electoral officers, be made available to all political parties, at least, 72 hours before the election. Anything short of using the registers containing the names of the authentic voters will not be acceptable.”

The APC thanked residents for providing information that will thwart rigging plans and ensure a credible poll.

Urging the people to be vigilant, it said: “Their desperation knows no bounds, hence they will do anything, no matter how illegal, to thwart the will of the people. But no power is bigger than the people’s power and no inducement is worth anyone’s conscience. The votes of the people of Osun must not only be counted, but must count on Saturday.”

  • Party moves administrative machinery to Osun

Party moves administrative machinery to Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has mandated all its elected members at the state and national levels to converge on Osun today and remain in the state until Saturday’s election.

This, it said, was to support Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the directive covers political appointees in states controlled by the APC.

Also expected in Osogbo are members of the party’s National Executive and the National Elders’ Caucus.

APC said it perceives the election as a celebration of democracy and a harvest time for the party, “whose candidate has worked so hard to implement his mandate and make life more abundant for the people”.

It urged its members in Osun to be vigilant of “desperate tactics being perfected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reap where it did not sow.

The party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said APC will relocate its administrative machinery to Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

During a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Odigie-Oyegun said: “We wish to inform the public and millions of our members and supporters that as from August 4 (yesterday), the National Secretariat of the APC will relocate to Osogbo, Osun State. The national secretariat of our great party will continue to operate from Osogbo until after the governorship election.”

He said the party was determined to protect its votes during the election and hailed Osun people for their steadfastness.

Odigie-Oyegun urged the people to ignore any provocation and turn out massively to vote for the APC on Saturday.

  • APC exposes PDP rigging plan

    APC exposes PDP rigging plan

THE All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday alleged “a devilish plan” involving an unscrupulous INEC official and PDP stalwarts to rig the August 9th governorship election in Osun State.

Under the alleged plan, according to the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, some INEC IT staff have handed over the entire electoral register for the state to a Special Assistant to a top PDP national official with a view to manipulating it to disenfranchise many voters.

‘’For those who may see this as outlandish, they should recall that an INEC official tampered with the voters register used during the last gubernatorial election in Anambra State to remove the names of many voters,’’ the APC said.

It added that the plan to tamper with the electoral register for Osun and  INEC’s delay in issuing Permanent Voters Register to registered voters, especially those who are APC members in the state, were pointers to  the desperation of the PDP to win the forthcoming governorship election at all cost.

It said: ‘’The truth is that the PDP knows it cannot win a free and fair election in Osun State. Everything so far points to the fact that our party will win by a landslide if the election is free, fair, credible and transparent.

“In fact, a highly-credible opinion poll carried out by the globally-recognised TNS-RMS shows that the APC leads among voters in the state by 73%, compared to a paltry 19% for the PDP.

‘’Apparently stunned by the reality on the ground, as against the propaganda by the PDP, the party’s candidate, Iyiola Omisore, quickly conjured his own opinion poll, purportedly carried out by USAID, showing that he is leading the APC candidate and incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

‘’Fortunately, USAID has denied carrying out any opinion poll in Osun State, thus putting a lie to the PDP’s claim. There is no better indication of desperation than this,’’ the party said.

It called on all the good people of Osun state in general and APC members and supporters in particular to be very vigilant in other to thwart the evil machinations of those who are averse to credible and violence-free elections.

  • Jonathan paying lip service to free, fair elections, says APC

Jonathan paying lip service to free, fair elections, says APC

President Goodluck Jonathan should match with action his talk on free and fair elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said.

The opposition party also said all the assurances so far given by the President have not translated into credible elections.

In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC urged the President to ensure that next year’s elections are not marred by the intimidation and harassment of opposition party members and supporters. There should also not be deliberate disenfranchisement of voters, which hallmarked the Anambra and Ekiti governorship elections, among others, the party added.

‘’On the same day the President’s latest assurances of a free, fair, credible and transparent elections in 2015 were being reported, agents of the Jonathan-led federal government were ransacking the offices of a company hired to carry out an opinion poll for Osun State ahead of the August 9 gubernatorial election.

‘’If the opposition can no longer freely carry out opinion polls, if the companies hired to carry out such polls are harassed and intimidated by SSS officials as they did to tnsrms, the offices of which were searched for six hours, after which top officials of the firm were dragged to the SSS offices in Shangisha and computers carted away, then, how can any President convince anyone that free and fair elections can be held under his watch?

‘’If the Ngozi Okonjo Iweala-linked NOI polling firm has never been harassed for its choreographed opinion polls that favour the Jonathan Administration, why should other firms be subjected to the kind of Gestapo- tactics that tnsrms was exposed to? This is why we are asking President Jonathan to walk the talk,’’ the APC said.

The party said the foundation was being laid to “rig at source” next month’s governorship election in Osun at source, claiming INEC had been frustrating attempts by APC members to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards. The PDP, it alleged, continued to boast that it would use the military to illegally shut down Osun State and bully the opposition as it did in Ekiti.

It also wondered whether INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega properly weighed the statement he made, in which he tried to justify the deployment of troops in Ekiti for the election on the basis that they helped to ensure a violence-free exercise.

‘’Jega should be asked to explain why troops sent to provide security for the Ekiti election were harassing and intimidating only the opposition? Why were they arresting only opposition members? Is that also part of providing security for an election? If soldiers had only provided non-intrusive security for the election, perhaps no one would have complained. But where they turned themselves into the enforcement arm of the ruling party, everyone, including INEC, should be concerned,’’ the APC said.

The party urged President Jonathan to refrain from deploying the military for election purposes and read the riot act to his cabinet members, such as Musiliu Obanikoro and Abduljelili Adesiyan, and party officials who specialise in electoral malfeasance, and elections will start becoming free, fair, credible and transparent to such an extent that the world would notice.

‘’Saying one thing and doing the opposite, Mr. President, will not translate to credible elections. The world is watching,’’ it said.

As a starting point, the APC urged the President, if indeed he is committed to free and fair elections, to launch an inquiry into why the offices of the firm carrying out an opinion poll for Osun State were invaded and to tell Nigerians whether the firm would have been harassed if it had been hired by the PDP or its candidate for the August 9 election.
