  • Lakanu, seven others promoted DIGs

    THE Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of eight senior police officers to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGs).

    The approval, which takes effect from yesterday, gives room for the re-constitution of the Police management team based on zonal representation.

    The approval was the high-point of the 4th plenary meeting of the commission held in Abuja on Monday and yesterday, which was presided over by its Chairman, former IG Musiliu Smith.

    A statement issued in Abuja by the PSC spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, said of the eight officers promoted, one of them, Usman Yakubu, would proceed on terminal leave.

    The list and brief profile of the newly promoted officers reads: “Aminchi Samaila Baraya, the most senior AIG from Northeast who will represent the zone in the management team, Usman Tilli Abubakar, representing the Northwest; Abdulmajid Ali, former Assistant Inspector-General of Police, representing Northcentral and Fredrick Taiwo Lakanu,  former AIG, Operations and until his appointment, the Force Secretary, representing the Southwest. He was also former CP, Imo State and had also headed SARS, Lagos.

    Others are: “Godwin C. Nwobodo, former AIG, Border Patrol, presently AIG, Zone 7, Abuja and former CP, Courses, at the Police Academy, POLAC, Wudil, Kano, representing Southeast, Anthony Ogbizi Michael, former CP, Ebonyi and Delta States, representing Southsouth and Yakubu Jibrin from Northcentral but appointed on seniority consideration.”

    The commission also approved the retirement of seven former DIGs.

    Smith urged the new team to give the Acting IG maximum cooperation and support to move the Force forward.

    He also pledged the guidance of the commission to the new team, adding that they were coming in at a very critical time in the life of the country.

  • IG shortlists Lamorde, Lakanu, four others as DIGs

    Acting Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has sent the names of new Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for consideration and approval.

    According to a source at the Force Headquarters, four of the nominees are Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGs) and two are Commissioners of Police (CPs).

    The nominees, according to the source, are: AIG Usman Tilli Abubakar from Kebbi State, AIG Abdulmaji Ali from Niger State; AIG Taiwo Frederick Lakanu from Lagos State and Godwin Nwobodo from Enugu State.

    Others are: CP Ogbizi Michael from Abia State and CP Ibrahim Lamorde, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from Adamawa State.

    When The Nation contacted the Police Service Commission spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, he admitted that the commission had received a letter from the Ag. IG but he said he could not confirm the names.

    He also expressed hope that the names of the new DIGs would be made public after the plenary concludes its deliberation that was adjourned till today.

    Ani said: “The plenary is continuing tomorrow. I know that the commission received an official communication from the Ag. IG and that official communication is part of what the plenary is considering.

    “At the end of the plenary tomorrow, the commission would have taken a decision on that official communication from the IG.”

    THE Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 25 senior police officers to their next ranks.
    A statement by the commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, said the promotions were based on merit, seniority and availability of vacancies and that in future the commission will ensure that promotions are regular in the police force.
    Ani said the former Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP. Taiwo Fredrick Lakanu, is among the beneficiaries. He was elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).
    It also includes three Assistant Commissioners of Police, who were promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioners; one Chief Superintendent of Police, who moved to the rank of Assistant Commissioner; two Superintendents , who are now Chief Superintendents and four Deputy Superintendent , who were promoted to the rank of Superintendents. Others are six Assistant Superintendents of Police, who were moved to the rank of Deputy Superintendents and eight Inspectors, who are now Assistant Superintendents.
    AIG Lakanu was enlisted into the Nigeria Police as a Cadet ASP and he has served in various commands, formations and departments, including Operations, Investigations and Administration.
    “As head of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Lagos, he earned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gallantry Award for his contributions to reducing the spate of crime in Lagos, from where he was later appointed as the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to the IGP,” the statement added.
    AIG Lakanu was also a former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, before he was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command. He also served briefly as the Commissioner of Police in-charge of the Nigeria Airport Command, before his posting as the 31st Commissioner of Police, Imo State.
    The Chairman of the commission, Dr. Mike Okiro, a retired IGP, congratulated the officers and urged them to continue to rededicate themselves to the service of their fatherland.

    Eminent persons’ forum’ll boost security, says Lakanu

    Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has inaugurated the Eminent Persons’ Forum (EPF) to assist the police combat insecurity across the country.

    Police Commissioner Taiwo Lakanu launched the nationwide initiative in Owerri, the state capital, on behalf of the IGP.

    Lakanu, who has battled insecurity in the state with a huge success in the last 11 months, said the “innovative is in line with the IGP’s new leadership paradigm, which is anchored on ensuring that our streets, our neighbourhoods, our communities remain safe”.

    He said: “No one is surprised that the IGP has hit the ground running. A man of high level of integrity and professional excellence with several years of experience in the Force, IGP Idris has indeed started very well.

    “The IGP has started an unprecedented level of reforms in several areas of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly in constructive policing strategies, community policing, capacity development, strengthening intelligence-led policing through the establishment of forensic laboratories across the six geo-political zones of the country, collaboration with sister agencies and the professionalisation of the Force.”

    Lakanu noted that the EPF “entails the coming together of critical stakeholders in the various states of the federation, people who have the burning desire to partner with the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring the safety and security of their states”.

    The ceremony was attended by eminent Imo indigenes who got accolades for collaborating with the police in fighting crime and criminality.

    Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze Samuel Ohiri, hailed Idris and Lakanu for their effective and result-oriented leadership styles.

    The state Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, Mr. Chima Chukwunyere, who also hailed the police for the initiative, pledged the cooperation of his committee.

    The forum will meet regularly to appraise the security situation in the state and offer solutions.
