No fewer than 210 Boko Haram fighters and their family members have surrendered to troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Sector 2, along the Lake Chad region.

MNJTF spokesman Lt.-Col. Olaniyi Osoba said in a statement on Wednesday that the mass surrender follows intensified kinetic and non-kinetic operations in the region.

  • NAF airstrikes kill several terrorists near Lake Chad

NAF airstrikes kill several terrorists near Lake Chad

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully conducted airstrikes against terrorists in the Jubillaram area, southern Tumbuns, near Lake Chad, eliminating several militants.

AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the operation was made possible due to the forced migration of terrorists to higher ground following persistent rainfall.

He said that the NAF aircraft conducted an air interdiction mission, dealing a significant blow to the remnants of terrorists hiding in the area.

“Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions revealed terrorists with salvaged belongings in makeshift accommodations, leading to precision airstrikes that destroyed structures and neutralized several militants.

“The success of the operation demonstrates the NAF’s commitment to achieving its mandate and protecting the nation from terrorist threats.

“The excess rainfall and swampy terrain inadvertently pushed the terrorists out of hiding, allowing the NAF to strike a significant blow.

“The airstrike has destabilized the terrorists’ center of gravity, diminishing their capacity to cause harm, especially to civilian targets,” he said.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, had instructed all Air Component Commanders to intensify operations against terrorists and criminal elements, and the strike at Jubillaram confirmed that the directives were yielding the required outcome.

The Nigerian Army in conjunction with a hybrid force and element of the Civilian Joint Task Force, has successfully overrun the Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists’ stronghold in the Lake Chad Region

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this is contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Friday in Abuja.

He said the offensive operation was conducted on Wednesday with a fierce battle leading to the killing of three terrorists and the recovery of a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle.

Other items recovered are a truck-mounted anti-aircraft gun and a cache of arms and ammunition.

He said the insurgents attacked the troops with a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), Mortar, Gun trucks, and motorbikes.

Nwachukwu said the insurgents fell under the overwhelming superior firepower of the troops, forcing them to abandon their stronghold, armaments, and equipment in disarray.

According to him, the operation proved to be a major setback to the insurgents, as the gallant troops neutralised three terrorists.

“Items recovered are one MRAP, one gun truck, one Dushka Machine Gun, one AK 47 Rifle, and one locally fabricated gun.

“Troops also captured one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Bomb,  273 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, one Pumping machine,  65 Dushka links, 48 General Purpose Machine Gun links and three motorbikes.

“The gallant troops are presently exploiting their success in pursuit of the routed insurgents,” he said.

Two soldiers, terrorists killed in Lake Chad, Kaduna

Two soldiers have been killed and three injured as troops of the Multinational Joint Taskforce (MNJTF) in the Lake Chad region continued their onslaught against terrorists, The Nation learnt yesterday.

The deceased soldiers said to be from Nigeria and the Republic of Chad, were killed by terorrists in operations conducted between February 10 and 20.

It was gathered that the four sectors of the MNJTF also neutralised several suspected terrorists and recovered high caliber firearms, ammunition and other weapons in the simultaneous clearance operations that denied the terorrists the freedom to wreak havoc.

Confirming their deaths in a statement yesterday, the Chief of Military Public Information, Lt.-Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, commended their gallantry in battle.

He noted that the MNJTF significantly stepped up its clearance operations within the Lake Chad basin, with a view to strengthen free movement and rejuvenate economic activities.

He said the initiative led to the surrender of many terrorists and the interception of a major arms haul meant for insurgents’ use.

According to him, all four sectors recorded various successes which portrayed the surge in troop effectiveness through the surrender of terrorist elements, offensive operations and curbing of arms smuggling.

He said MNJTF troops of Sector 1, Mora, Cameroon, triumphed in a notable engagement at the locality of Soueram.

This offensive, Abdullahi said, resulted in the death of two Boko Haram terrorists and the seizure of 92 linked ammunition belts.

“Complementing this success, on the 10th and 19th of February 2024, two Boko Haram members each surrendered to troops in Sectors 2 and 3, stationed in Litri, Chad, and Doron Baga, Nigeria respectively.

“The items recovered from these 4 repentant insurgents included a collection of arms and ammunition, significantly consisting of an AKM rifle, an AK-47 rifle, 3 magazines, and 29 rounds of 7.62-millimetre special ammunition.

“The MNJTF’s persistence in offensive campaigns brought additional victories, with notable operations conducted by the troops of Sector 2 Bagasola, Chad.

“During a high-impact offensive at the locality of Tchokou, a Lake Chad Island, the troops inflicted casualties on Boko Haram elements and recovered three “teke-teke” canoes among other terrorists’ logistics items.

“Furthermore, in separate operations on 19 February 2024, troops recovered five 155 millimetre high explosive shells used for making Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, debilitating the operational capabilities of the terrorist factions in the region.

“In a concurrent strategic move, the Chadian Air Force, guided by reliable intelligence, conducted a successful air strike on 20th February 2024. The mission targeted Boko Haram strongholds along the southern rim of Lake Chad, near the Chad-Cameroon-Nigeria border, resulting in the neutralisation of several terrorists and the destruction of terrorist equipment on waterways. “Several terrorists were seen jumping into the Lake from their boats and are believed to have died.

“In Sector 4 Diffa, Niger Republic, capitalizing on precise intelligence, the troops effectively disrupted an arms smuggling attempt north of Nguigmi near the Niger-Chad borderline on 10th February 2024.

“Their timely intervention led to the confiscation of a substantial arms cache comprising

six AK-47 rifles, 11 magazines, and 50 rounds of 7.62 millimeter ammunition, dealing a substantial blow to the clandestine network supporting the insurgency.

“Sadly, despite these achievements, two soldiers, one each from Nigeria and Chad paid the supreme price while three others sustained various degrees of injuries.

“We commend their gallantry and pray for the souls of the deceased to rest in peace.

“The MNJTF remains devoted to its mandate of restoring peace and security while fostering the conditions necessary for economic growth and the free movement of people within the Lake Chad basin.

‘These recent achievements underscore the task force’s resolve and effort in confronting the challenges posed by terrorist activities. “The MNJTF will continue its comprehensive approach, combining military action with collaborative efforts to support affected communities in overcoming the threats to regional stability,” said Abdullahi.

Relatedly, the Nigerian Army said troops on operations at Yadi Forest, Kaduna State, neutralised a suspected terrorist and destroyed the criminals’ camps concealed along the river lines in the forest.

The troops recovered arms and ammunition during the operation that was conducted on Tuesday, February 20, the army said.

Spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement yesterday, said troops encountered an ambush staged by the terrorists during the operation.

“But responded with a heavy volume of fire neutralizing one of them, while others scattered in disarray,” Nwachukwu said.

According to the army spokesperson, the troops, during the operation, recovered two Ak-47 rifles, six Ak-47 magazines, five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 331 rounds of 7.62mm x 54 PKT machine gun ammunition, and two PKT machine gun ammunition links.

“Other items recovered include three motorbikes, two power generating sets, two desert camouflages, a pair of desert boots, leg and hand chains used for fastening kidnap victims, nine Baofeng radios with none chargers, one Talisman vest, one International Passport, two Voter’s cards and two National Identity cards,” he said.

He said in that engagement, ISWAP lost five terrorists, while one was captured.

The MNJTF spokesman also said that 13 AK 47 rifles and 2 hand grenades were recovered from the encounter.

In a statement issues at the end of the meeting and signed by the media aide to the President, Mr. Femi Adesina, the issue of

Investments in sectors like petroleum, power, aviation, agriculture, railways, and many others, also featured prominently in the discussions.

The president stressed the need for the recharge of Lake Chad with water from the Congo Basin, so as to grant succour to the more than 30 million people adversely affected by the shrinkage of the lake over the years.

“We invite you to invest in our refineries, pipelines, power sector, aviation, agriculture, education, and many others, so that you can have your management here to oversee the investment. We need your expertise,” President Buhari said.

On the receding Lake Chad, he said of the over 30 million people affected, more than half were in Nigeria, and it has contributed greatly to illegal migration, as innumerable youths dare the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, in order to find safer shores in Europe. A large number die in the process.

“We need help with the recharge of Lake Chad, as it is not a project that the concerned countries can handle alone,” President Buhari said, adding: “Recharging the lake will bring back fishing, farming, animal husbandry, and the youths won’t be attracted by insurgency or illegal migration. We want Qatar to be involved because of the humanitarian nature of the endeavour.”

Sheikh Hamad Al-thani said he was honoured and happy to be in Nigeria for the first time, stressing it was a reciprocal visit to the one paid to Qatar in 2016 by President Buhari.

“The relationship between our countries is very good. We just have to build on it,” the emir said. “We share a lot of similarities in different areas. We need to enhance bilateral trade and economic cooperation. We are willing to do a lot more with Nigeria, and will continue to work on investment opportunities of mutual benefit,” he added.

“Contact was made with Boko Haram terrorists at Andakar Camp. In the ensuing fire fight, Malloum Moussa; Boko Haram Commander, along with 15 of his men were neutralised.

“Five gun trucks were also destroyed. A woman whose relationship with the terrorists is yet to be determined was apprehended.

“Information gathered has revealed that Malloum Moussa, who had one-eye, was a high-ranking Boko Haram Commander who had jurisdiction in the entire southern islands, including Daban Masara, Kirta Wulgo and Koleram.

“He was notorious for imposing hefty levies on farmers, fishermen and cattle herders to fund Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency in the locality.”

  • MNJTF neutralises 33 Boko Haram terrorists in Lake Chad region

According to its spokesman, Colonel Timothy Antigha, the task force, using it extensive networks together with air and ground components, raided and mopped up the insurgents in their hideouts within the theatre of operation.

He said: “In consonance with the determination of the MNJTF to unhinge the structures of Boko Haram and dismantle its terror networks in the Lake Chad Area, Air and Ground Components of the Task Force have intensified air interdictions and mop up activities in the area of operation.

  • Buhari seeks more global commitment on Lake Chad

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja called for more commitment from the international community on redirecting water to the shrinking Lake Chad.

He warned that about 40 million population in the region would pose adverse migration and security challenges to the world.

Speaking while receiving Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Philip Baker, at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari said the tragedy of the shrinking Lake Chad would keep fuelling more illegal migrations, banditry and provide willing hands for terrorism since majority of the people have lost their means of livelihood.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President said: “In 1920’s, an academic rightly predicted that except there’s a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it will dry up.

“Now, whenever I go for any global meeting or visit a country, I will always draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake, and the resulting negative effects,” he said.

Buhari urged the Canadian government to support the on-going efforts to divert water from the Congo River to the lake.

“Canada has the capacity to help us. The lake is now less than 10 per cent of its normal size. A redirection will help our people from getting into the Mediterranean Sea,” he added.

The President said Nigeria and Canada have good relations dating back to the early 60’s when Nigeria gained independence, hailing the country for “its vast resource utilisation and solid political background.”

The Canadian High Commissioner lauded the President for providing leadership in the country, and championing the cause for the replenishing of the Lake Chad Basin.

He noted that the Canadian Governor General, Julie Payette, had presented a picture taken from space of the vanishing lake to the President when she visited recently.

Baker said more than 11, 000 Nigerians were studying in Canada, with many residing in the country, assuring the President that majority of the students return to build and invest their knowledge in Nigeria’s growth.

The Canadian High Commissioner said he would work towards improving relations between both countries on migration, education, entrepreneurship training, mining, renewable energy and Information Technology.

Also receiving Letters of Credence from the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Wendy Campbell Laing, Buhari said Nigeria remains grateful for the training support for the military in the Northeast  since it started fighting Boko Haram.
