LaLiga EA Sports: El Clasico take centre stage  in title run in

With just a few weeks of the Spanish football season remaining, here comes a look at the situation in the title race.

There are just four rounds remaining in the 2024/25 LaLiga EA Sports season, and it’s still a mystery as to who’ll win the title. FC Barcelona currently sit top, but they still have work to do if they want to lift the trophy. Here, we take a look at the situation of the top two teams in this year’s title race, one of the most exciting in all of Europe.

FC Barcelona (1st, 79 points):In his first season in Spanish football, Hansi Flick has done an excellent job and his FC Barcelona team are playing some fantastic football at the same time as they’re scooping up points week after week. Los Azulgranas have been top of the table for most of the season, for all but 10 matchdays, and currently hold a four-point lead over their direct rivals Real Madrid. With ELCLASICO coming up in Matchday 35, the situation at the top could still change, but Barca are in a comfortable position for now.

Remaining fixtures: Real Madrid (H), RCD Espanyol (A), Villarreal CF (H), Athletic Club (A).

Real Madrid (2nd, 75 points) :Real Madrid are the defending champions and know what it takes to win silverware, but they haven’t actually managed to retain the LaLiga EA Sports championship since they did so in 2006/07 and 2007/08. Currently in second, the wait for back-to-back titles seems destined to continue. Having scored far fewer goals than Barca, Los Blancos’ goal difference is a lot worse. They remain in the race, though, having eked out four wins in a row, all by a one-goal margin.

Remaining fixtures: FC Barcelona (A), RCD Mallorca (H), Sevilla FC (A), Real Sociedad (H).

Title race going down to the wire in LaLiga EA Sports

The title race in LaLiga EA Sports is the closest and the most thrilling across Europe’s major leagues, with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both on 51 points and with Atlético de Madrid just behind on 50.

Every point is so valuable, so football fans around the world will be watching the top three when they take to the field in Matchday 25.

There are other intriguing contests further down the table as well, such as the battle to qualify for continental competition. Although they’re currently in mid-table, RC Celta and CA Osasuna both still have a chance of reaching the European berths, so their Friday night clash is an important one. Both teams earned draws last weekend against two of the title challengers, so will look to build on that this matchday.

The relegation battle is heating up too, so 19th-placed Deportivo Alavés vs. 15th -placed RCD Espanyol in the first match of Saturday is another hugely important one. It was a very fun game between these teams earlier in the season, when a Javi Puado hat-trick led RCD Espanyol to a 3-2 win, so now the Catalan side will try to win this away fixture as well.

Rayo Vallecano vs. Villarreal CF is another meeting of two evenly matched sides, as they enter this matchday in sixth and fifth place respectively. Even though neither side won their game last matchday, they have both been in generally good form of late so this should be a high-quality contest.

Attention turns to the title race for the final two matches of Saturday, starting with Valencia CF vs. Atlético de Madrid at 18:30 CET. Diego Simeone’s charges have only won one of their past five league games, so need to get back to winning ways at Mestalla, but they’ll remember that they lost  3-0 on their visit last season. Even with Valencia CF still inside the relegation zone, this is far from an easy fixture for Atleti.

Then, FC Barcelona make the trip to take on UD Las Palmas in the Canary Islands at 21:00 CET, a homecoming of sorts for in-form Pedri. Barça lost 2-1 in Catalonia when these sides met earlier in the campaign, so Hansi Flick and his players know they cannot underestimate Los Amarillos.

Four more fixtures follow on Sunday, starting off with Athletic Club vs. Real Valladolid. The visitors are rock bottom and have lost five league games in a row, and they just sacked Diego Cocca as coach. However, they did manage to hold Athletic Club to a 1-1 draw when these sides met earlier in the season.

The 16:15 CET game on Sunday afternoon sees Real Madrid host Girona FC at the Bernabéu. This time last year, this was a meeting between the top two and Los Blancos turned in a brilliant performance to win 4-0. Even though Girona FC are further down the table this season, in 10th, a strong performance would do wonders for Real Madrid’s confidence as they aim to recover top spot.

Getafe CF vs. Real Betis follows, and this will be a test of the home team’s incredible form. No team has picked up more points in the 2025 calendar year than the 14 of Getafe CF, but Real Betis are playing well too, especially following the January signing of Antony. It could be a great battle at the Coliseum.

The last of Sunday’s four matches takes place at the Reale Arena, as Real Sociedad look to get back to winning ways against CD Leganés. La Real have lost five of their past seven league matches, so qualifying for European football for a sixth consecutive season is looking increasingly difficult. But, a victory here could bring back some confidence ahead of the final third of the season.

The final game of the weekend will come on Monday night, when Sevilla FC and RCD Mallorca meet at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. These are two more teams in with a shot of European qualification, and they each won by large scorelines last weekend, so this will be a big test of each club’s European credentials.

10 lessons learned  from exciting Laliga EA Sports

What has been going on in LaLiga this past week? Here are 10 of the top stories, from Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid’s draws to Pau Cubarsí’s new contract.

It was a weekend of shock results in Laliga EA Sports, with no team inside the top nine managing to achieve a victory. Those results are outlined below, along with the rest of the week’s headlines.

Real Madrid draw but stay top

The Laliga EA Sports title race remains absolutely fascinating. Real Madrid are still the leaders for now, but they’ve now failed to win any of their past three league fixtures after drawing 1-1 at CA Osasuna on Saturday.

Sørloth rescues a point for Atlético de Madrid

Although Real Madrid dropped points, so too did their city rivals Atlético de Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side also drew 1-1 on Saturday, in their case at home to RC Celta after seeing Pablo Barrios sent off in the seventh minute. The team from Vigo even took the lead, courtesy of an Iago Aspas penalty, but Alexander Sørloth scored a great goal late on to rescue a point for Los Colchoneros.

No wins among the top nine

Quite incredibly, not a single team that entered Matchday 24 inside the top nine managed to achieve a victory across Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Third-placed FC Barcelona and sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano still have to play their Matchday 24 fixture, when they face each other on Monday night, while each of Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Athletic Club, Villarreal CF, Real Sociedad, Girona FC and CA Osasuna either drew or lost this past weekend.

Getafe CF continue their incredible run

Getafe CF are climbing up the table and have now won four away games in a row in the league, this time defeating Girona FC 2-1 at the Estadi Montilivi. Los Azulones have now taken 14 points from their past six fixtures, meaning they’ve picked up more points than any other Laliga EA Sports team in 2025.

Spoils are shared in  Valencian Community Derby

Just like in the first half of the season, the second meeting between Villarreal CF and Valencia CF this campaign finished as a 1-1 draw. January signing Umar Sadiq scored a late equaliser for Valencia CF, who have lost just one of their past six league games to move closer to safety.

Big wins for Sevilla FC and Real Betis

Both fanbases in Seville were able to celebrate many goals this past week, as Sevilla FC thrashed Real Valladolid 4-0 on the road and as Real Betis overcame Real Sociedad 3-0 at home. Thanks to those big wins, both Andalusian clubs can still dream of achieving European qualification this season.

Ante Budimir makes history at CA Osasuna

With his goal in CA Osasuna’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, Ante Budimir has become the Pamplona club’s joint-top scorer in Laliga EA Sports. With 57 goals, the Croatia international now has the same number of goals in Spain’s top flight as Sabino Andonegui.

Three Spanish victories on the road in Europe

In all three of the major UEFA competitions, there was a Spanish side involved in a playoff round first leg this past week. And, all three of them won away from home. In the Champions League, Real Madrid overcame Manchester City 3-2. In the Europa League, Real Sociedad earned a 2-1 first leg victory at Midtjylland. And, in the Conference League, Real Betis thrashed Gent 3-0 in Belgium.

The Copa del Rey semi-finals are set
