  • LaLiga: Omeruo set for 10th start against Espanyol

Super Eagles’ defender, Kenneth Omeruo is expected to make his 10th league start of the season for Leganes when they travel to the RCDE Stadium to tackle Espanyol on matchday 18 of the Spanish LaLiga, AOIFootball.com reports.

Having bagged a Man of the Match performance in his side’s last outing, Omeruo will most definitely keep his place in the heart of the five-man defence alongside Dimitrios Silva and Unai Busting, whilst the duo of Jonathan Silva and Allan Nyon continue their roles from the full-back position.

Having kept five league clean sheets in his last 10 league games with Leganes, the Nigerian will be hoping the club extends its impressive nine-match unbeaten streak which has seen them move four points off the relegation zone.

In contrast, Espanyol is going into Friday night’s clash with an abysmal run of form, having lost all six of its last league fixtures since its 1-0 triumph over Athletic Bilbao in November.

A win for Leganes will see them jump to 12th as they continue their quest for a top half finish.

  • LaLiga leads the way as France top the world

…11 LaLiga players were involved in Sunday’s World Cup final in Moscow, more than from any other league

LaLiga’s huge influence on this summer’s World Cup continued right through to Sunday’s final, with MVP Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid scoring one and setting up two as France topped Croatia 4-2. Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder and Croatia captain Luka Modric was voted player of the tournament despite his country falling just short at the final hurdle.

11 LaLiga players were involved in the decider at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium, more than any other league. Griezmann clinched his third MVP award of the tournament with an impressive performance. It was his free-kick that was knocked into the net for the game’s opening goal, his penalty which put France 2-1 up and his assist which led to France’s third.

Atletico defender Lucas Hernandez laid on France’s fourth and final goal, with his fellow defenders Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona and Raphael Varane of Real Madrid also impressing, while Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi was a second half substitute as Les Bleus saw out their victory.

Modric shone albeit in defeat and was awarded the 2018 ‘Golden Ball’ for his contribution over the month in Russia. This included a penalty in the opening game victory over Nigeria, a tremendous 20-yard strike in the unforgettable 3-0 victory over Argentina and shoot-out spot-kicks converted against Denmark and Russia during the knock-out stages.

Croatia also had Barça’s Ivan Rakitic in midfield in Sunday’s final along with Atletico’s Sime Vrsaljko at right-back, while Mateo Kovacic was on the bench. New Atletico signing Thomas Lemar and Barça’s Ousmane Dembele were unused subs for France.

It was a fitting end to a tournament at which LaLiga stars have been prominent throughout, right from the opening game when Villarreal’s Denis Cheryshev scored twice for Russia in the hosts’ 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. The following month of games then saw 24 different LaLiga players from ten different Spanish clubs score 40 goals in total. LaLiga stars were named MVP in 21 of the 64 games as 81 players from across LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1l2l3 represented their countries.

Among the standout stars was Barça’s Philippe Coutinho, who provided two goals and two assists as his team were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Belgium, for whom Real Sociedad’s Adnan Januzaj got on the score sheet in the group stages.

There were countless other memorable moments involving LaLiga stars, including Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos’s sensational last-gasp strike for Germany against Sweden, Atletico centre-forward Diego Costa’s three goals for Spain and Lionel Messi’s superb solo effort in their victory over Nigeria. Camp Nou teammates Luis Suarez and Yerry Mina hit the net twice and three times for Uruguay and Colombia respectively.

Other LaLiga interventions during the group stages included Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Malaga striker Youssef En-Nesyri both scoring as late substitutes in Spain and Morocco’s 2-2 draw. Japan midfielder Takashi Inui, who has just completed his move to Real Betis from Eibar, scored against both Senegal and Belgium while Saudi Arabia’s match winner in their final group game against Egypt was Villarreal’s Salem Al-Dawsari.

This summer’s World Cup has truly showcased the breadth of LaLiga’s quality, talent and its true international reach, leaving fans worldwide to eagerly await the start of the 2018/19 Spanish season next month.

  • Barcelona budgets €897million for 2017-18 season

Barcelona budgets €897million for 2017-18 season

Barcelona have approved their largest ever budget of €897million for 2017-18, following a record revenue in 2016-17.

The LaLiga giants’ earnings of €708m for 2016-17 were presented at the club’s General Assembly on Saturday, with club members then approving next year’s record budget with 391 votes for and 49 against.

The huge revenues did not include the €222m received from Paris Saint-Germain for Neymar, which should prompt another record-breaking set of figures in a year’s time.

It is the first time Barca have surpassed the €700m barrier in terms of revenue for a fiscal year, and the club have now accumulated a profit of €175m since 2010.

Barca plan to have earned €1billion in revenues by 2021, though that strategy could be threatened by the political unrest in Spain following the Catalan independence referendum.

Regardless of how the political situation is resolved, however, Barca have no plans to leave LaLiga, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu insisting a place in Spain’s top-flight is key to continuing their financial development.

“Barca is more than a club and it must be a place of concurrence and respect,” Bartomeu told the assembly.

“You must respect all, minorities and majorities, think about how you think.

“Barca will not be manipulated by political interests, or where they came from. We want to continue playing in the League and our participation is guaranteed.

“The viability of both institutions goes on.”

Barcelona are however not the only ones counting their blessings over improved revenue.  In the Bundesliga Bayern Munich announced a new record turnover of €640.45million for the 2016-17 season despite failing to get beyond the Champions League quarter-finals.

Carlo Ancelotti guided the team to a fifth successive Bundesliga title, and although there was little other success on the field in terms of trophies, the club enjoyed a hugely positive year financially.

At Saturday’s Annual General Meeting, it was revealed that their pre-tax profits increased by 22.2 per cent to €66.2m, while post-tax profits were €39.2m, up 18.6 per cent on the previous year.

Athletic squad shaves heads in support of Yeray

Athletic Bilbao players have shaved their heads in a show of solidarity with team-mate Yeray, who is suffering from cancer.

The defender was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in December last year and had an operation to remove the tumour, before returning to first-team football in February.

However, medical checks carried out last month showed that the disease had returned and the 22-year-old immediately began chemotherapy.

The rest of the first team have pledged their support to the Spain Under-21 international and other cancer sufferers across the world by agreeing to shave off their hair.

Athletic stars Iker Muniain and Aymeric Laporte each shared messages of support on Twitter before the club posted the pictures via their own official account.

Midfielder Oscar de Marcos later said at a news conference: “This is not only for Yeray but for all those people who suffer from this disease. You see that here they have support.”

Yeray is expected to be out of action for three months while undergoing treatment, meaning he will miss the start of the 2017-18 LaLiga season.

    Rossi out for seven months

Giuseppe Rossi will be out of action for up to seven months after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Celta Vigo’s LaLiga defeat at the hands of Eibar.

The 30-year-old attacker featured from the start in Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Balaidos but was forced off 10 minutes before half-time.

He underwent a series of tests to determine the extent of the injury and Celta announced on Monday he will be require an operation and be sidelined for at least six months.

“Medical tests have revealed that Giuseppe Rossi has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee,” a statement on the club’s website reads.

“The player will need to undergo surgery and will be out of action for a minimum of six months.

“Celta wish Rossi a speedy recovery.”

Rossi has been plagued by injury throughout his career, with the former Manchester United forward undergoing a number of operations on his right knee over the past few years.
