Yamal links up with Neymar in Brazil

Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal has finally had the opportunity to get to know his “idol” Neymar as he holidays in Brazil during the off-season.

In videos shared on social media, Yamal and Neymar can be seen playing footvolley, driving around in a golf buggy and relaxing by a swimming pool.

Neymar shared one clip of the duo on Friday, with Yamal commenting “My brother.”

Yamal, 17, has spent time in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro this week, where he has also hung out with surfing world champion Gabriel Medina.

After an exhausting season for club and country, which ended with Spain’s defeat to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final on June 8, Yamal now has the summer off due to Barça’s failure to qualify for the Club World Cup.

Former Barça forward Neymar, who is back in Brazil playing for boyhood club Santos at the age of 33, also has some down time due to the Brasileiro pausing for the Club World Cup.

Yamal was six years old when Neymar joined Barça from Santos and, while he rates Lionel Messi as the best ever, he has always said that the Brazilian was the player he most enjoyed watching due to his style on the pitch.

Teenage Barca star Yamal signs new contract to 2031

Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal  has signed a new contract until 2031 with the Catalan giants after a spectacular season.

The 17-year-old winger is already one of the club’s key players and helped them land a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

“Barcelona and Lamine Yamal have reached a deal to extend his contract to June 30, 2031,” said the Catalan club in a statement.

“Lamine Yamal’s renewal is a demonstration of the solidity of Barca’s project. His emergence on to the world football scene is like few others, and it began with his debut on April 29, 2023, still at the age of 15.”

Spanish media reported the new deal makes him one of Barcelona’s best paid players.

After triumphing at Euro 2024 with Spain last summer, Yamal scored 18 goals and provided 25 assists in 55 matches across all competitions during a sensational campaign.

Operating on the right flank and a prodigious dribbler, Yamal’s skill and speed contributed greatly to Barca netting 102 league goals this season as they reclaimed the crown from rivals Real Madrid.

Yamal, who came through the club’s feted La Masia youth academy and is often compared to all-time Barcelona great Lionel Messi, made his debut in 2023 under Xavi Hernandez at just 15.

By the end of the 2023-24 campaign he had emerged as the team’s main attacking weapon, the bright spot in a poor campaign where Barca finished empty-handed.

Following his exploits at the Euros, Yamal fitted Flick’s attacking style to perfection and adding more consistency, showed he has become one of the world’s best players.

Yamal put in two brilliant Champions League semi-final performances against Inter Milan but his team were edged 7-6 on aggregate and must wait to end their European drought.

“I will keep my promise and I will bring (the Champions League trophy) to Barcelona, we will not stop until we get it,” pledged Yamal after the game.

Despite his youth the winger has already played over 100 times for Barcelona.

Yamal, who turns 18 in July, follows team-mate Raphinha and coach Flick in signing contact extensions in the last few days.

Spanish media report his contract includes various bonuses for different achievements, including winning the Ballon d’Or, as well as a significant pay rise.

Yamal is a candidate to win the trophy for the world’s best player this year.

YIPPEE YAMAL: Praises for Barca’s ‘Golden Feet’ after title triumph

Barcelona’s 28th  Spanish league title caps a remarkable season defined by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who at 17 has emerged as world football’s most electrifying talent.

Following in the footsteps of fellow graduates of Barca’s La Masia academy Gavi and Ansu Fati, Yamal first made his mark internationally last summer, helping Spain win the European Championship.

Since then, his mesmerizing performances have drawn comparisons to La Masia’s greatest product, Lionel Messi.

Yamal reached his 100th  Barcelona appearance last month -three years younger than Messi was when he achieved the same feat – during a thrilling 3-3 draw with Inter Milan at Montjuic, where he became the youngest player ever to score in a Champions League semi-final.

Record-breaking has become routine for Yamal. He became the youngest goal scorer in European Championship history last year with a stunning long-range shot against France that helped his side reach the final, where they beat England and he was named Young Player of the tournament.

He is the youngest player to debut and score for Spain and in LaLiga, the Champions League and the Euros. He also holds the records for youngest player in a Clasico and youngest scorer in both the Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

His performance against Inter Milan established him as a frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or award.

Even as Barcelona narrowly missed reaching their first Champions League final in a decade – with Inter fighting back to win 4-3 in extra time in the second leg at San Siro – Yamal remained exceptional, repeatedly threatening to equalise in extra time only to be denied by goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s saves and the woodwork.

Yamal has been the heartbeat of Barcelona’s attack this season with 15 LaLiga assists and 25 across all competitions, plus 17 goals in 53 appearances, including the first in the 2-0 win against Espanyol on Thursday that clinched Barca the title.

His contributions helped Hansi Flick’s Barcelona become an offensive juggernaut, with the attacking trio of Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha accounting for 91 of the team’s 169 goals this season.

As the campaign concludes, the football world watches to see what the young playmaker achieves next.

His immediate challenge comes next month in Germany, where Spain will defend their Nations League title – another opportunity for Yamal to strengthen his case as the world’s best player.

Lamine Yamal is better than Lionel Messi – Odumodublvck claims

Rapper Odumodublvck has claimed that Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal is better than football legend Lionel Messi.

The rapper made the statement on X following Yamal’s standout performance in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey El Clasico victory over Real Madrid, where the 17-year-old made two assists.

Odumodublvck argued that Messi did not achieve as much at Yamal’s age, adding that after watching Yamal live, he is convinced of his stance and “nobody can tell him otherwise.”

“Yamal is better than Lionel Messi. Na me, Kala talk am. At 17, Messi was not touching this [Yamal’s] level. I saw him live. I saw him, you cannot whine me. Nobody can whine me”, he said.

  • How footballers are influencing Afrobeats

    How footballers are influencing Afrobeats

When a video of Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal dancing to Skales’ decade-old hit “Shake Body” surfaced online, it was seen by many as just another light-hearted moment from a football camp. But what followed proved how far-reaching a simple dance move can go in today’s music ecosystem.

The 16-year-old star, widely regarded as one of football’s brightest prospects, unwittingly reintroduced the 2014 track to millions of fans across the globe. The song, originally released as part of Skales’ debut album Man of the Year, had been a hit in its time. But like many songs from that era, it had long faded from mainstream attention. Yamal’s viral video sparked fresh excitement around “Shake Body,” sending it back into streaming rotations and trending conversations on TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

This incident brings to light an interesting shift in how music—especially Nigerian music—spreads globally today. While influencers, TikTok stars, and DJs play their part, professional footballers are increasingly playing an unexpected role in music promotion. And in many cases, the impact is louder, faster, and more organic.

    Footballers as Cultural Connectors

The connection between football and music is nothing new. In Nigeria, artists often draw inspiration from football metaphors in lyrics, while footballers name-drop their favourite singers in interviews. But with the rise of social media and the international popularity of Afrobeats, footballers are becoming more than fans—they’re influencers in their own right.

Take Paul Pogba for instance. The French midfielder has long shown his love for African music. From dancing to Wizkid’s Soko, joining Burna Boy on stage at Parklife Festival in 2931 and linking up with Davido on several occasions to posting videos of himself vibing to Afrobeat hits in his downtime, Pogba’s influence has helped export Nigerian sounds to fans in Europe and South America.

The player’s fanbase spans continents, and his musical preferences often translate into fresh attention for the artists involved.

Similarly, Vinicius Jr., the Brazilian forward currently shining at Real Madrid, has been seen dancing with Burna Boy at a club thereby giving these artists unintentional co-signs that resonate globally.

    Homegrown Support From Within

Nigerian footballers themselves have also played key roles in promoting local music on the world stage. Premier League star Alex Iwobi is a vocal lover of Nigerian music, regularly spotlighting songs from mainstream acts and upcoming talents. He’s been seen in a video dancing to Kcee’s Ojapiano, doing the Shaku Shaku dance while playing another Nigerian music. The Fulham player also released a song, M.

Then there’s Wilfried Zaha, the Ivorian international who once went viral for dancing to Monalisa by Lojay and Nowo by Dj Spinall and Wizkid. The video was reposted by blogs across Africa and the UK, pulling more attention to the songs and sparking a wave of fan recreations.

Cristiano Ronaldo playing Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ while his kids danced to it, a seemingly minor moment that nonetheless drove fans and media outlets to revisit the song.

    Organic Influence, Real Impact

What makes these moments impactful is their authenticity. Unlike paid influencers or brand-sponsored partnerships, these footballers are simply sharing the music they genuinely enjoy. There’s no marketing script, no forced dance challenge—just pure, unscripted moments of joy and rhythm.

And in a digital world where authenticity wins, this kind of exposure carries more weight than a typical promotional campaign. Fans see their favorite players enjoying a song and are more likely to check it out. Music algorithms notice the spike in interest. Blogs pick it up. Before long, the song is back in the public eye—even if it was released years ago.

For artists and PR teams, this presents an overlooked opportunity. Building relationships within the football community or encouraging natural discovery of their music among athletes could open up new lanes of exposure. Unlike traditional media channels, footballers connect with an international audience that spans languages, borders, and demographics.

Lamine Yamal’s “Shake Body” moment is a case study in this new reality. In doing so, Yamal unknowingly played a role in preserving and promoting Nigeria’s music legacy.

As Afrobeats continues its journey across the world, don’t be surprised if the next global hit is launched not by a DJ or influencer, but by a footballer with rhythm, a phone, and a love for Nigerian sound.

Yamal set to renew contract with Barcelona

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal will extend his contract with the LaLiga club beyond 2026, his agent Jorge Mendes said.

The 17-year-old Spain international, who won the 2024 Golden Boy award to cap off a year in which he helped his country win the European Championship, has scored 11 goals and provided 16 assists in 35 appearances in all competitions this season for Barca.

A product of the Barca academy, Yamal has played 86 times for the Catalan club since making his senior debut in April 2023.

“Lamine is going to continue at Barca, the important thing now is to think about sporting matters,” Mendes told Spanish media after a meeting with Barca president Joan Laporta in Lisbon.

Barcelona visit Portuguese side Benfica for the Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie later on Wednesday.

Barca’s Yamal wins 2024 Golden Boy award

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has won the 2024 Golden Boy award, capping a year in which he helped Spain win Euro 2024, and at 17 years and four months is the youngest-ever winner of the prize, Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport reported.

The award recognises players under the age of 21 playing in Europe, and Yamal was chosen ahead of Real Madrid’s Arda Guler and Paris St Germain’s Warren Zaire-Emery.

Yamal was named Young Player of Euro 2024 in Germany, where he became the youngest player to appear in the finals and his goal in the semi-final win over France made him the tournament’s youngest scorer.

He became the youngest player to win the Euros when Spain beat England 2-1 in the final, and at the Ballon d’Or ceremony last month he won the Kopa Trophy for best world player under 21, coming eighth in the overall award.

Yamal has continued his excellent form this season, scoring five goals in 12 league games for LaLiga leaders Barcelona, where he came through the club’s La Masia academy, like Lionel Messi.

England and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham picked up the prize last season and past winners include France striker Kylian Mbappe and former England forward Wayne Rooney. Yamal is the fourth Barca player to win it after Gavi, Pedri and Messi.

Barcelona’s 18-year-old attacking midfielder Vicky Lopez won the Golden Girl award.

Yamal bags brace as Barca take Girona revenge

Teenage star Lamine Yamal struck twice as La Liga leaders Barcelona thrashed Girona 4-1.

Hansi Flick’s side have now won all five of their opening matches and avenged two humiliating Catalan derby defeats by Girona last season with an emphatic victory at Montilivi.

Yamal’s first-half double sent Barcelona on their way with Dani Olmo and Pedri Gonzalez adding further goals after the break.

Cristhian Stuani pulled one back for the hosts, last season’s surprise package who finished third in only their fourth season in the top flight.

Girona lost several key players in the summer with coach Michel Sanchez forced to rebuild.

Barcelona have new momentum under former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Flick and produced their best performance of his reign to date.

“I think you can see the confidence we have, and when we have the ball, we have the quality to play and to create chances,” Flick told reporters.

“I think today we had a lot of chances to score one or two goals more, but in the end I’m very happy with the performance of the team.”

Yamal and striker Robert Lewandowski came close in the opening exchanges before the teenage star, who led Spain to Euro 2024 victory in the summer, broke the deadlock.

The winger picked the pocket of David Lopez as he tried to bring the ball out of defence, before finishing with aplomb past Paulo Gazzaniga after 30 minutes.

“We started very concentrated, very focussed, we pressed them – we know when we give them the space they need for combinations we get in trouble,” said Flick.

“You saw the first goal, it was unbelievably good (pressing) from Lamine.”

Yamal grabbed his second before the break with a fine guided finish from the edge of the box after a free-kick was cleared into his path.

Bryan Gil fired straight at Marc-Andre ter Stegen from close range at the other end, before Girona were awarded a penalty when Inigo Martinez handled the ball.

However after a VAR referral the referee annulled his decision, seeing that it had bounced on to Martinez’s arm off team-mate Alejandro Balde.

Olmo expanded Barcelona’s lead early in the second half with a sublime finish from a tight angle, leaving the new arrival from RB Leipzig on three goals from three La Liga matches.

Gazzaniga denied Lewandowski as he ran through on goal and tried to finish with a dink, as Barcelona maintained control.

Their fourth came through Pedri when midfielder Marc Casado cleverly played him through and the Canary Islander took his time to sidestep Gazzaniga and finish.

“We had to start (the season) well, other years we didn’t start it as we would have liked, above all the coach told us that,” Pedri told Movistar.

”(He told us) that from the first game we should push, that the league is won above all in these first games if you keep building the distance up, let’s continue in the same way.”

Former Espanyol striker Stuani finished from close range with 10 minutes remaining to give Girona a consolation, before Barcelona substitute Ferran Torres was sent off for a high tackle on Yaser Asprilla.

They were the only blots on Barcelona’s otherwise pristine copybook as they maintained their 100 percent record at the start of the campaign.

On Saturday champions Real Madrid earned a 2-0 win at Real Sociedad to move second, four points behind Flick’s side.

Girona are seventh after the defeat, with their next match a Champions League debut away at Paris Saint-Germain.

“It feels bad, it was a tough defeat today, for how we were preparing for the game and the excitement of facing Barca again at home,” Stuani told Movistar.

“We have to try and forget about it as quickly as possible, this week we have a very special game, we have to face that with as much excitement as possible because for us it’s an historic match.

“We have to turn the page on today and try to compete in the best way (we can).”
