Monarch laments invasion of community by land grabbers

The Olowu of Owu-Ikosi, Oba Aderemi Ogunlari, has lamented the invasion of the community by some landgrabbers.

The monarch said the peaceful Owu-Ikosi Kingdom in the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Epe Division is reeling from an escalating crisis as ‘Ajagungbale’ (landgrabbers) are intimidating residents and crippling local commerce.

Addressing reporters at a briefing in his palace, Oba Ogunlari, flanked by his Council of Chiefs, appealed to the Lagos State Government and all security agencies for immediate intervention, warning that the situation is rapidly descending into anarchy.

The monarch stated that the landgrabbers had made incursions into villages across the Epe Division.

“The state government should act quickly before it becomes the issue of herdsmen,” the monarch cautioned, drawing a parallel to the security challenges in other parts of the country.

He implored Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to swiftly come to the aid of residents and the State House of Assembly to swiftly make a law to curb landgrabbing.

The traditional rulers and chiefs made a joint, urgent call for the deployment of state security service officials to the area.

He said: “We are calling on Governor Sanwo-Olu to quickly take it up to avoid unrest, and specifically on the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Area Commander of Area N to come and save our life and soul before it is too late. “We appeal Lagos State House of Assembly to make a law to aid the work of Lagos State Task Force on Land Grabbers (LSTF) as this will curb land-grabbing in the state.”

He noted that the escalating violence posed a direct threat to the state government’s investment in the area, specifically the relocation of Sawmillers from Okobaba to Imofa.

Oluwo/Jagun oba of Owu-Ikosi, Chief Olumide Osilaja, painted a grim picture of daily life, stating that the situation has become so pervasive that there is nowhere in the community that the landgrabbers are not operating.

“They are in our farms now with the hoodlums they are using to harass our people. Farmers cannot go to their farms, our women cannot go on their daily business,” Chief Osilaja said.

He added that people visiting sawmills to purchase planks are being stopped and extorted for huge amount of money.

“The thugs are reportedly armed with cutlass and guns and are seen taking harmful drugs, fueling community panic,” he said.

Residents of Wood Island Estate in Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos have decried the demolition of over 100 houses by suspected land grabbers.

They lamented that properties that have been owned legitimately for over 25 years were destroyed by persons accompanied by armed thugs without notices nor court orders.

According to them, some of those whose houses were demolished were resident abroad and yet to be notified about the development.

A retired civil servant, Sanni Gerard, whose house was among those destroyed claimed he had been in possession of the property since 2014 only to be called over the weekend that some persons had vandalised his house and upon arrival, he was denied entry into the premises by the thugs who insisted he must pay N3,000 entry fee.

Residents of Wood Island Estate in Isawo, Ikorodu, have raised the alarm over the demolition of more than 100 houses by suspected land grabbers, calling on the government to urgently intervene, prosecute those responsible, and ensure full compensation for the victims.

The affected homeowners said the demolished properties had been legitimately owned for over 25 years, lamenting that the destruction was carried out by individuals backed by armed thugs—without any prior notice or valid court orders.

Some residents revealed that the crisis began late last year when thugs began forcefully evicting occupants, eventually leading to the widespread demolition.

They noted that several homeowners living abroad are still unaware their houses have been destroyed.

A retired civil servant, Sanni Gerard, whose home was among those affected, said he had owned the property since 2014.

He recounted receiving a call over the weekend about his house being vandalized, but on arrival, he was blocked by thugs demanding a N3,000 “entry fee” before he could access his property.

“After the payment, I was allowed inside and they said I should go and see their leader, who is Olotu. I went and met him. He asked if I had land there and I said yes. He asked for my documents and I provided my receipt and then he said it was no longer valid.

Speaking to reporters, Chairman, Community Development Association (CDA) in the area, Adekunle Adeiga, said when the people first came last September, as the head of all the CDAs in the area, he went to them to find out what was happening and they told him they had come to take over their father’s property.

“But after sometime, I noticed that people are coming to complain to me that they are destroying some houses at Wood Island. I called people including the chairman representing Wood Island but they all denied it.

“I don’t know how they got it done. At the end, what I noticed was that all the lands, the buildings were destroyed.

“The houses that I knew were here should be at least 70 both completed and uncompleted. The people demolishing said they got an injunction from the court as the new owner of the land. The community during a meeting at Oke Oko, requested for the court papers but they could not present any.

“Many times we asked for the order or any document from the court but they kept telling us that their lawyer will present them to us. Later the lawyer told us that he was not in possession of any paper. Then, about two weeks ago, the lawyer publicly told us at a meeting at Oke Oko that there was no judgment yet. That the case is on and they believe they will win.”

Contacted, the Coordinator, Arugbo Odo /Aboki Lawal family, Eniran Orisan, admitted that his family sold the land to the affected victims.

He said he was not aware of any court order against his family, adding that they have been the legitimate owners of the land and the entire Owutu since 1904 following a Supreme Court judgment.

Several residents were injured on Thursday when hoodlums believed to be land grabbers invaded Ketu-Epe community in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Residents of the town urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, to rescue them from the grip of the hoodlums terrorising their community.

A number of the victims are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.

According to sources, the hoodlums stormed the Rala area of the town near a petrol station around 8pm.

One of the victims, Mutiu Ẹkisanya, who was receiving treatment in a hospital, recalled the incident, saying: “We were seated outside our home taking fresh air when some men suddenly jumped out of a bus. They came in four buses and were armed with guns and machetes.

“The hoodlums shot sporadically into the air and attacked people in a nearby night market. To our surprise, they were accompanied by some policemen who also launched teargas at people.

“The land grabbers started beating us and attacked us with machetes, dispossessed us of our mobile phones and looted shops.”

Another victim, Idris Isiaka, said the attack launched by the hoodlum was like a scene from the movies.

“In the afternoon of the day, we accompanied some men to the site of a property they wanted to develop.

“To my surprise, the hoodlums stormed our community at nightfall and beat me and others mercilessly.

“We suspect that the hoodlums are working for the opponents of our monarch-elect, Prince Babajide Adekọya Adefowora.

    • Accuses Attorney-General of shielding suspect

Residents of Osuke-Ota Community of Ado-Odo in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, yesterday stormed Oke Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta in peaceful protest over the siege on their community by suspected land grabbers.

The residents appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to rescue them.

They claimed that  the land grabbers invaded their Osuke-Ota community on February 24, and unleashed terror ostensibly to take over their large expanse of land.

The protesters, armed with placards with various inscriptions, alleged that the land grabbers had also shot and killed a resident of the community, Saheed Soboyejo, during the mayhem.

A resident, Oladitan Taofik, who spoke on behalf of others, said Osuke-Ota and adjoining communities, including Idimu and Ilasa, have experienced attacks by the land grabbers.

According to him, the leader of the land grabbers, chased the residents away from their homes, while those who tried to resist the assault were either maimed or killed.

Oladitan lamented that many residents had been scared away from their homes for fear of either being killed  or wounded.

He lamented further that though police arrested and prosecuted the accused for the alleged murder of Soboyejo, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ogun State, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, withdrew the charges against him.

Since the accused’s release, he added, he had been boasting that he would kill  them and take over their land, and that no one could touch him.

“Our community is under siege as land grabbers have been terrorising us,’’ he said.

The community leader said the land grabbers invaded their community in February, this year with sophisticated weapons such as AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons to unleash mayhem.

One of the land grabbers was later arrested and charged to the court but that the government withdrew the charges against the accused and he was  released, he said.

But, Ogunbode (SAN) denied covering  suspect.

“I don’t know how many times I will have to defend myself against unfounded allegations. We released a statement last week and we still stand by it. Those who do not love Ogun State, land grabbers and criminals are out to use the press and some corrupt elements in the police to achieve their aims. We will not allow it. This is the Ministry of Justice and not that of injustice.

“This is the same guy they say I am protecting. I got him arrested in 2022 and locked up by the DSS. We did not know at that time that the allegations against him were trumped up borne out of land disputes. When we realised we did the proper thing which was to discontinue the charges.”

That is what justice is about. They are now making another round of allegations against him. The police in Ogun State investigated and found nothing. They rushed to Zone 2 in Lagos where they have corrupt accomplices in uniform. That is the issue.

“The matter is now being investigated at Abuja. Why are they in a hurry? Why will they not wait for the police to send the file to the ministry for advice. Mob justice has no place in the criminal justice system of Ogun State. It isn’t about me or anyone. The laws protect us all. We will uphold the law as much as we can. That is our sworn duty. We will not be blackmailed. We won’t give in to intimidation,” Ogungbade stated.
