  • We didn’t stop plane from landing in Makurdi for political reasons, says Air Force

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) yesterday denied that it prevented a chartered flight from landing at its Base in Makurdi for political reasons.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Southern and Middle Belt Forum on Monday alleged that NAF denied them landing rights in Makurdi to attend a Middle Belt summit on restructuring.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information AVM Olatokunbo Adesanya said in a statement yesterday that there was a clearly established procedure for non-NAF aircraft to operate into and out of Makurdi.

“The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sadly been drawn to allegations that it prevented a chartered flight from landing at its Base in Makurdi on July 16, 2018, for political reasons.

“There is absolutely no iota of truth in the allegations that NAF’s decision was politically motivated.

“To start with, the runway at NAF Base Makurdi is not a dual user facility but one constructed strictly for military purpose.

“Accordingly, in line with global best practices, there is a clearly established procedure for non-NAF aircraft to operate into and out of the runway in Makurdi, and that procedure is well-known to all qualified pilots in Nigeria.

“Indeed, many airlines had in the past adhered to the stipulated procedure and therefore successfully landed and taken off from the NAF runway in Makurdi.

“The procedure includes a written request to NAF Headquarters, Abuja for permission for a specific aircraft to operate into its airfield on a specific date and time, including the names of passengers and other necessary details.”

“In this case, there was indeed a request for permit by the Benue State Government, dated July 16, 2018, for aircraft with Registration Number 5N-FCT to land at NAF Base Makurdi on July 16, 2018.”

He said requests for landing permits were expected to reach NAF Headquarters not later than two days before the desired landing date.

According to Adesanya, the NAF, however, went out of its way to expedite the process and accordingly granted the permit for aircraft with Registration Number 5N-FCT to land at NAF Base Makurdi on July 16.

He added: “However, at about 5 p.m. on 16 July 2018, the NAF was verbally informed that there was a need to change the aircraft for which permission had already been issued, reportedly because the aircraft had developed snags.

“The NAF, therefore, asked for another written request, in line with the established procedure.

He said “as at date”, the NAF Headquarters was yet to receive a written request for the replacement aircraft with Registration Number 5N-IZY to land at its Base in Makurdi.

“For the avoidance of doubts, the NAF does not concern itself with political or religious affiliations of individuals/organisations in granting landing rights at its airfields.

“The issue of security and safety remains uppermost, particularly while noting that the ongoing Operation WHIRL STROKE is largely being coordinated from NAF Base Makurdi, with fighter aircraft flying in and out of the Base.”

    •Ebola fear grips pasengers

An Air France flight yesterday made an emergency landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The plane, which landed at 4:59pm, was said to have developed low tyre pressure midway into its journey to Nigeria from Paris.

Although the flight’s origin was not ascertained, it was learnt that its fear-griped passengers quickly disembarked the aircraft after it touched down after hovering for over an hour.

Rescue agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), fire service and the Nigerian Air Force and Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) placed their men on standby at the tarmac.

But the plane landed and taxied to the hanger without a hitch.

NEMA’s Southwest spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye said there were neither casualties nor injuries.

He said the problem was adequately handled and the 178 passengers moved to safety.

A statement by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) spokesman, Fan Ndubuoke, quoted the airline’s captain as saying he noticed that the left hand nose tyre pressure indicator was on. This indicated faulty nose wheels.

Observing the Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs), which is a corollary to safe operation, the pilot declared an emergency.

Ndubuoke said the aircraft landed safely.

The statement added that the captain of the flight later explained to the NCAA that the nose tyre pressure indicator was faulty, hence the wrong signal. The tyre pressure was later discovered to be in perfect condition.

The NCAA directed the pilot to submit the Mandatory Occurrence Report.

  • Crowd stops plane from landing

    Crowd stops plane from landing

Barely a week after his suspension by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko returned yesterday from an overseas trip, but his plane could not land at the Sokoto International Airport.

There was no technical problem, but a huge crowd of excited supporters stormed the tarmac.

The governor, who was supposed to land at 4.17pm, could not do so until about 6pm.

The governor was held in the air for about 20 minutes before Aviation authorities diverted the plane to Kaduna – to avoid stampede.

But the aircraft, which brought federal lawmakers from the state, who accompanied the governor to Sokoto, succeeded in landing at 4.15pm.

Although Wamakko was expected to land two minutes later, the tarmac was declared unsafe by aviation management.

The diversion of the governor’s flight created tension among his supporters and to avoid a breakdown of law and order, the airport management opted to clear the tarmac.

After clearance, the governor’s plane eventually landed at about 6pm.

As at 8.30pm, the governor was still battling to wade through the huge crowd lining the routes from the airport to the Government House.

A PDP source in the state said: “The crowd comprised mostly PDP supporters, who are angry over the suspension of the governor. Initially, there was tension because the anxious supporters thought that the Federal Ministry of Aviation was up to a game like it did to Amaechi and Oshiomhole.

“But tempers subsided when the governor eventually landed . The crowd was huge.

“This is a sign that if the PDP National Secretariat messes up, the party may lose the state. How can they suspend a governor for not picking the calls of the National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur?”

The Ministry of Aviation cited a near breakdown of law and order at the Sokoto Airport as the reason why the Donnier 328 aircraft flying the governor from Abuja was diverted to Kaduna.

In a statement, the Media Assistant to the Minister of Aviation, Mr Joe Obi, explained that the governor’s supporters broke the fence of the airport and were on their way to the tarmac to welcome the governor.

The statement reads : “ The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), a few hours ago diverted the plane, a Donnier 328 aircraft carrying the Governor of Sokoto State, Alh. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamako to Kaduna airport as a safety and security precautionary measure. The governor was in an Abuja in-bound flight to Sokoto.

“The safety/security precautionary measure followed the near-breakdown of law and order at the Sokoto airport by an unruly crowd of Wamako supporters who broke the fence and was on its way to the tarmac, apparently to welcome the governor.

“Effort by security personnel to prevent a breach of the security and movement into the prohibited and restricted areas of the airport was met with stiff resistance from the crowd.

“Sensing that the security and safety of the governor and other passengers was in real danger, NAMA decided to divert the aircraft to Kaduna airport to restore normalcy at the airport.

“The governor and other passengers on board have since returned and landed safely at the airport, after the unruly crowd had been successfully restrained from entering the restricted zone.”

    Air France plane landing delayed

An Air France flight into the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos hovered for about two hours before landing last night.

A passenger on board told our correspondent that the delayed landing was as a result of poor lighting on the runway.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) officials were last night battling with the generating set serving the E-wing of the airport.

This roof of the generator house was blown off by the wind that accompanied last night’s rainfall in Lagos.

“They are cleaning the generating set after water entered it. Everything will be okay”, said FAAN spokesman Yakubu Datti last night.

Datti said he was not aware that the Air France plane did not land on schedule.
