LANRE TERIBA disrepects dress code at Moji Olaiya’s wake

AS celebrities, especially Yoruba movie actors and producers, turned out en masse to partake in the wake-keep of late actress Moji Olaiya at the De Blue Roof of LTV, Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday, Gospel artiste Lanre Teriba disrespected the dress code of black the organisers put in place by showing up in all-white.

Though, the artiste who is more known as ‘Atorise’ wasn’t the only one that did this, his was more pronounced as he was the celebrity performer of the evening. He wore a white top, pants and white shoes.

Singing to honour Moji, Atorise’s outfit sharply contrasted the sombre colours worn by Moji’s loved ones and colleagues whom he called on stage to ‘wave’ a final good bye to the actress  who died on May 17 of a heart attack in Canada, two months after she gave birth to a baby girl.

The burial committee put in place for the burial of Moji Olaiya had requested all attendees to dress in black to the wake keeping.

Glowing tributes as colleagues bid late Moji Olaiya goodbye

Despite the various musical interludes, it was a sombre mood at De Blue Roof of the LTV, Agindigbi, Ikeja, Lagos as hordes of artistes, family and friends, wearing black attires, gathered for the wake-keep held in honour of late actress Mojisola Olaiya who died last month in Canada.

With gospel singer Lanre Teriba singing about that late actress’ good qualities, tears flowed. And a little way into his subdued performance, Teriba called friends and the burial committee to come on stage. Led by the artiste, the assembled individuals, majority of whom were Moji’s colleagues in the film industry, prayed against sudden death. The musician then urged everyone present, ‘to wave their right hand as a way of saying goodbye to Moji Olaiya’.

  • Hip hop music is not Nigerian music, says Lanre Teriba

POPULAR gospel musician Lanre Teriba has lambasted hip hop music, saying it is foreign to Nigeria. The famed gospel artiste said this on Tuesday during the Students’ Week of the Nigeria Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos.

“Hip hop music is not Nigerian music,” Teriba said while castigating the media for supporting only hip hop music.

He also blasted Nigerians for their love of fakery and attempt to be like westerners.

“Nigerians love fake life a lot,” he said.

“Oyinbo don’t want to be like us. We always want to be like oyinbo.”

However, he said he associates with artistes who constantly make themselves relevant.

“I don’t care whether you sing a secular song or you sing  a gospel song, the only thing I care for is as long as you’re relevant and what you’re doing is preaching  something good to people out there, then I want to associate with you.”

  • LANRE TERIBA: I DON’T LET MY SOCIAL LIFE OVERCOME MY SPIRITUAL LIFE

LANRE TERIBA: I DON’T LET MY SOCIAL LIFE OVERCOME MY SPIRITUAL LIFE

His debut album, ‘Atorise’, made Lanre Teriba, a prominent face in the entertainment world. But despite his success as a recording artiste, controversies remain the major factor that is always attached to his name. Set for a new album titled ‘Your Excellency’, the gospel singer, while speaking to FAMUYIWA DAMILARE , reveals some of his new plans and projects to help upcoming artistes. Excerpts:

WE’VE not really seen much of you in the spotlight of the media. What have you been up to?

You don’t see much of me or you’ve not been watching television (laughs). I have been working on my new album and to the glory of God, it’s coming out anytime.

You are working on your new album?

Yeah, I’m working on my new album and it’s going to come out anytime from now. You know, I release one album per year and the one for 2017 is coming out anytime from now.

What’s the unique selling proposition of your album? What makes it different from the albums you’ve been releasing in the past?

A lot of things make it different from all other albums that I have been releasing in the past. To talk about the lyrics; it’s quite different, to talk about the arrangement; it’s quite different; to talk about the nature of the music and most especially; the studio work. I know a lot of people don’t really believe that something good can come out from a ghetto. The studio I’m using this time for the first time is in the ghetto all the way from Mushin and the name of the studio is Pangolo Studio. I know anybody that hears the name “Pangolo”, will find it to be funny.  But trust me; something good, unique, and something different is coming out.

To be precise, are you going to be featuring secular artistes?

You know the way it works in Nigeria. I believe so much in myself as an artiste. It is also what makes an artiste; being able to diversify. I will love to feature different artistes so that we can do something different; just to include something new from the usual tunes.

Is there anyone you are very sure of featuring?

9ice Abolore is my friend, I’m going to feature him. I have featured Oritsefemi before like I said earlier. I’m planning to do something with Olamide as well.

You can go ahead with the name of the album…

Okay, you are going to be the first person I’m going to tell. I have not disclosed the title of my new album to anyone. The title of the new album is Your Excellency. So, I want to praise God, it is about praises.

How did you arrive at the name, Your Excellency?

Each time I want to do an album, I seek the intervention of the Holy Spirit and the only thing that God want me to do for Him this year is just praising Him. He said I should praise Him, so he can praise me too. So praise God so that he can praise you. God wants us actually to praise him.

What has been your motivation despite the challenges of climbing to the top in your career?

The most important thing is to be able to determine what you want and where you are going. When you are determined, you stay focused. When you focus, you stay determined. That’s just it. I do the right thing at the right time. I make hay while the sun shines. I don’t joke with my job even though, I have my social life. I never allow it to overcome my spiritual life. That’s just the secret. I want to do something new all the time. You know, that’s just the secret and I never underestimate in learning. I always love to learn from people. Anybody around me, I want to learn. That’s it.

You are a star now. Is there any force you have put in place to help the growing artistes?

One of it is the studio I am presently using for my forthcoming album. You know, the way people charge all these up-coming artistes; I’m not going to take that. I have been recording artistes free. I don’t need to advertise that. In life, you want to help people; you don’t need to talk about it. So, I have been doing my little contribution to the up-coming artistes.

I think that’s all; that is the little I have been contributing to help encourage the upcoming artistes.

  • I’m not a gospel artiste… –LANRE TERIBA AKA ATORISE

I’m not a gospel artiste… –LANRE TERIBA AKA ATORISE

For inspirational artiste, Lanre Teriba, the Nigerian entertainment industry is not encouraging enough. Lanre, who is fondly called Atorise, in this interview with FAMUYIWA DAMIARE, enjoins stakeholders in the music industry to give God a chance and laments the focus being placed on secular artistes among other issues.

WE have not been seeing you in the limelight lately, why?

Practically, we have been working, but there is no avenue to showcase our works as a gospel artiste. And the music industry in Nigeria is not really favouring us as gospel artistes and inspirational acts.

What do you mean by there is no channel to showcase your works as a gospel artiste?

By that, I mean that the broadcasting stations in Nigeria believe more in secular music than inspirational music. With this, it is quite difficult and not encouraging. Moral-wise, it is not also educating our children.

The fact that I am saying anything about this means a lot because people are not paying attention to it. So I just want to use this avenue to pass the message across that we need airplay of our works as inspirational artistes. I want it to be seen from my own point of view that we are not doing it right.

Talking of the regulatory bodies in the music industry, what have they been up to in this regard?

That is what I can’t really answer myself, and it is one of the reasons I have to speak out on behalf of people that don’t have the opportunity to express themselves. I don’t know what the regulatory bodies are doing concerning this, but I just want to enjoin the major stakeholders in the industry to at least give God a chance. This is because we are from God and we are still going back to him, and everything we have acquired so far in this life belongs to God. We want people to do it right so that we can get it right.

How do you think the government can get involved?

That still boils down to the regulatory bodies. It is a matter of engaging all media stations mutually, talking to them to give more room for inspirational songs like the ones we are doing, most especially, typical Nigerian music. What I see is also that we are promoting more of foreign music than the ones we do ourselves. They call our own music ‘local’ but they are promoting foreign music, and all these foreign media are not promoting us neither projecting us in a way. So why should we join them to promote their own music instead of promoting ours?

As an inspirational artiste, to what extent have you been able to earn some airplay on Nigerian broadcast stations?

I have been to different broadcast stations that each time I release an album, I will do a radio tour which is always an avenue I use to introduce my works and drop my music to earn airplay. This I’ve been doing for some time but I later realised that it’s not really been working, just because most of these guys believe more in hip-hop music.

And have you come to think of it that hip-hop is not really our own kind of music? Our own kind of music is soul-percussion kind of music. Although, we are in a civilised world now, but at the same time they are not promoting our own kind of music.

Why do you think is wrong?

Can you imagine a situation whereby a TV station owner tells me that if I want airplay of my songs, I will have to feature a secular artiste?  Why should I do that when I am a brand on my own?

And really, we don’t mind to spend more money to shoot a very good video, but we need certainty that we will be given the avenue to showcase it for people to see it. As long as we are sure about that, we will do our best possible to meet up to standard. As long as we do it right, we will definitely get it right.

But you featured Oritsefemi in one of your albums, what was the motive?

I featured Oritsefemi in one of my albums, and I did that because I wanted to reach the youths. And when that was done, it is not that I was trying to go secular but I just wanted to reach out to the youths at large.

How did you handle the criticism that trailed this act of yours?

It is bound to happen for people to criticise an artiste. Even as an individual, if people don’t talk about you, you are not relevant. Also, that was done to break the entertainment industry market-hub, and thankfully that was quite inspirational enough.

How will you describe your own type of music?

I am more than just a gospel artiste like people say, I am an inspirational artiste. I love to pass message through my music a lot. But just because there is no avenue to showcase the messages across, it is a major factor contributing to the lack of reach. So our works as inspirational artistes is not really getting to people out there. One should also note that some of our broadcast stations don’t want to have anything to do with gospel.

It is not that we aren’t stable, but just because we are trying to follow the trend.

Are inspirational artistes getting enough attention from entertainment awards?

One of those things I am telling you. There is nothing stopping these people from recognising inspirational singers in the industry like the secular ones. They should provide avenues or categories for inspirational artistes like us to be recognised in the industry at large.

  • Pasuma, Lanre Teriba wow guests as Gani Adams marks 46

The 46th birthday celebration of the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) may have come and gone, but the juicy stories from the event will reverberate in the social circles for some time.

The event, which held at the exclusive Batten House, Plot A2 Block G, MKO Gardens Road, Ikeja, Lagos, attracted dignitaries that cut across the political, business, traditional and entertainment sectors.

One after the other, friends and associates of the OPC leader took turns to extol his virtues, which many of them said have endeared him to them. Adams, who thanked the large crowd of friends and admirers for honouring him, said he would have wished for a quiet celebration in line with the state of affairs in the country but quickly added that there was no way he would have turned down such honour from his people.

The roof of the beautifully decorated hall was almost brought down when Fuji music exponent, Pasuma, took the stand and everybody scrambled to join the celebrant on the dance floor. Gospel act, Lanre Teriba, aka Atorise, who performed earlier on, served the dual purpose of doing a praise worship, which saw many sang in praise of God, and later switched to some danceable tunes. He wowed the crowd with his beautiful stage crafts, which left them asking for more. The high point of the event was the cutting of the birthday cake, which saw dignitaries joining the celebrant and his wife.
