FG installs 906 CCTV cameras in Lagos

The Federal Government has installed no fewer than 906 Close Circuit TV cameras in strategic parts of Lagos State to enhance security surveillance, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Adebiyi Mabadeje, said on Wednesday.

Mabadeje announced this at a news conference in Ikeja organised to mark Governor Babatunde Fashola’s sixth year in office.

He said the cameras were deployed from the 1,000 earmarked for the state, saying the devices were already assisting security agencies to track the activities of criminals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deployment of CCTV cameras nationwide to enhance surveillance, is a core component of the FG`s National Public Security Communication System Programme.

“Yes the project is on and it is real. 906 of the 1,000 cameras earmarked for the state have already been delivered and they have already being installed at secret locations across the metropolis.

“Though they have not been officially commissioned, they are already being put into use by the security agencies to track the activities of criminals,’’ he said.

The commissioner noted that the installed cameras were sophisticated devices as they had the capacity to generate video, voice and data simultaneously, to ensure effective surveillance.

He denied the report that the installation of the equipment had initially caused a rift between the state and the Federal Government.

According to him, the parties actually had an understanding on the deployment of the devices.

SCHEDULED to hold from April 26 to 28, Lagos State Government, via its Ministry of Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations, has endorsed the 2013 edition of the Eko Music Festival.

A letter of approval addressed to the organisers and signed by a Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Morounranti Aleniosu, states: “In line with the ministry’s set vision of making Lagos State the preferred tourist destination in Nigeria, and indeed Africa, we are pleased to be associated with your vision and drive in showcasing the musical excellence and peculiarity of the Nigerian people. Kindly accept our congratulations on behalf of Lagos State Government.”

Planned to be streamed live on the internet, and also syndicated to media agencies abroad, a member of the Eko Music Festival board, Mrs. Bridget Omeiza-Lawani, said that the festival is all about live performances as the international community is not impressed by singers who mime.

She also disclosed that the festival will include a cultural display by various troupes which will have the opportunity of presenting to the world their rich heritage on the festival’s platform.

CEO of EKO Music Festival, Ayo George, says that the event, among other things, comes out of the need to take Nigerian culture and music live to global viewers. The carnival is expected to feature 10 different musicians each day for the four days it is planned to hold.

  • LASG urged to create Alimosho Judicial division

Lawyers in Alimosho local government, Lagos have appealed to the Lagos State government to create a new judicial division in the area.

Chairman of the Alimosho Lawyers’ Forum, Mrs. Derin Kapo made the appeal at a news conferences in Lagos to announce their first Annual Law Week Summit starting on December 3, 2012.

Mrs. Kapo said that the creation of an Alimosho Judicial division would bring justice closer to the people.

She said that a judicial division is imperative for Alimosho in view of the fact that it has the highest concentration of lawyers in Lagos and is bigger than Bayelsa and Yobe states in terms of population.

“We are lawyers working and living in the old Alimosho local government which stretches from the old Ota toll gate to LASU environ.

“We observe that a lot of extra judicial killings occur more frequently and trampling on the fundamental rights of the people is rampant in the community because the people are not aware of their right and where to seek redress.

“Furthermore, Alimosho local government is the largest local government in Lagos state with large concentration of lawyers, yet there is no division. This means that all litigation arising from this end will be handled by Ikeja or Lagos Island judicial divisions.

“The net effect is that these divisions are crowded up resulting in congestion and delayed justice”,she noted

Mrs. Derin said that ALF’s law week summit will start December 3 with a press conference while Dr. Abiola Sanni of the Facaulty of Law, University of Lagos, Akoko will deliver a lecture on the new Lagos Traffic Law on December 5.

She said that the Law Clinic, where legal advice will be given pro bono to the people of Alimosho will hold on December 6 while the Law dinner has been scheduled for December 7, 2012 to round up the week.

LASG paints houses around Teslim Balogun Stadium, other venues

Residents of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC) estate adjacent to the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos have had their houses painted by the state government, ahead of the 18th National Sports Festival.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Games, tagged “Eko 2012,’’ will hold from Nov. 27 to Dec. 9.

A check by NAN showed that houses on streets opposite the LSDPC estate, such as Ogunmola, were also similarly painted. The government is also painting and fumigating houses around the stadium and the other venues for the festival.

The venues are: the University of Lagos, Akoka; the Yaba College of Technology and the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka. However, some of the residents have called on the government to ensure effective monitoring, to prevent the contractors from doing shoddy jobs.

Mrs. Iyabo Balogun, a petty trader, who resides at Block 4 of the LSPDC housing estate, said: “Our houses are now very beautiful and our environment is fumigated; thanks to Eko 2012”.

She said that she would like the Lagos State Government to continue to host Eko 2012 every year, so that the state government would continue to keep their neighbourhoods clean.

Mrs. Kemi Ajose, a housewife residing in Block 3 of the LSPDC estate, said though painting of her building had yet to be completed, she was grateful to government for it. Ajose, however, expressed disgust with the painters whom she said, had skipped her building for the next block for some two days now.

Another resident of Block 3, Mr. Alex Obi, said the contractor should be monitored by the government to ensure that he delivers a good job. He said the uneven nature of some of the paintings might derail the government’s plan of having a uniform outlook for the buildings during the Games.

Omolara Williams, a resident of Ogunmola Street, told NAN that the house painting started on Friday.

She said that she was happy with the development, which was in the spirit of Eko 2012.

NAN reports that the painting of houses around the Games venues was part of government’s efforts to create awareness for the fiesta and to ensure that the neighbourhoods remained clean.

LASG renovates National Stadium Knock-up Hall

THE Knock-up Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos which will be used for the table tennis event of the 18th National Sports Festival has been installed with “Fibre Elastic Zinc,’’ to enhance its illumination.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited the venue on Monday reports that the development is coming less than a week to the commencement of the Games. NAN observed that part of the roof and the sides were being removed and replaced with the fibre-elastic zinc.

NAN also reports that the edifice, which could not serve as an effective training venue for players or host competitions because of its poor lighting, now has those problems solved by the Lagos State Government.

Nasiru Bello, National Coach, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), explained that the upgrade was sponsored by the Lagos State Government, as part of its arrangements to host the festival. Bello said fibre elastic zinc, which is a modern technology, would provide good illumination in the hall for players who would participate in the event.

“The fibre elastic zinc is a new technology that foreign countries use in their sports halls and now, the Lagos State Government has taken advantage of the festival to upgrade our facility. This has automatically changed the face of the hall and players will be happy to play in a clearly visible environment, without stress, unlike what we experienced in the past,’’ he said.

Bello commended the Lagos State Government for the good work, noting that the NTTF had been crying out against the poor lighting of the edifice.

“Lagos State has done well for the NTTF and I thank God for the festival because it provided the platform for this good development, which has been one of our lingering needs,’’ he said.
