Lasisi fuses poetry with visual arts in African Citations

Performance poet Akeem Lasisi is bringing something new into poetry as he plans to hold an exhibition titled African Citations. The multitalented artist of Iremoje, Eleleture and Udeme fame is staging the exhibition to honour accomplished personalities and institutions from different parts of Africa.

“The idea is to explore more possibilities with poetry,” Lasisi says in a statement. “Over the years, I have built a bank of poetic tributes inspired by different factors but largely based on the subjects’ contributions to the advancement of humanity. Many of the personalities do not know anyone has dedicated, while a few do. I just feel this is an opportunity to showcase them, celebrate the subjects and expand the frontiers of the poetic form,” he explains.

Adding that African Citations has the potential to ignite twists and surprises, he says it is a continuation of what he has always tried to do with his performance and musical poetry.

Lasisi, who is also the public relations officer at the First Technical University Ibadan, says, “I have had encounters with many people and organisations in the course of my about 30 decades of my performance, journalism and teaching adventures. I have performed poetry at many events. I have been commissioned to produce multimedia poetry while I have had cause to admire folks from a distance based on various factors. Some of these have been produced into musical poetry and videos. They have been on air, online etc. Now, the experimentation will berth in a gallery setting so that it becomes more total.”

  • Lasisi takes English Language crusade to YouTube

Are you one of those who ‘blow’ English Language the way they like? You don’t care using ‘is’ where ‘are’ is supposed to be? Then, you have to watch it now because an English Language policeman is in your neighbourhood.

But do not be scared. He is only out to help us right the wrong in our handling the language, which is one of the most important globally.

That language cop is Akeem Lasisi, a journalist, writer, publisher and acclaimed performance poet, who has also taught English for many years. He has just initiated Phenomenal English, a video lessons series that will be powered by Phenomenal Hub on YouTube.

According to Lasisi, Phenomenal English is another way of intervening in the crisis that now defines the kind of English Language many people, especially Nigerians, speak and write. He explained that many are always with their phones and other related gadgets; so, it would be double-rewarding to provide them with the opportunity to improve on their English Language with ease.

He noted in a statement: “My experience as a constant user of English Language is that many people have problems with it because their foundation in the language is poor. Once the foundation is faulty, the house will not be able to stand well. Things have, of course, worsened due to the hydra-headed crisis confronting the Nigerian educational system.  The quality of expressions in many places is bad and getting worse by the day. But I feel the urge to be part of seeking practical solution to this. This is the essence of Phenomenal English.”

A native of Ibadan, Oyo State, Lasisi studied Education/English at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife – after earning the National Certificate in Education (English/Yoruba) from the Oyo (now Osun) State College of Education, Ila-Orangun. After teaching English Language and Literature for several years, he went into journalism, working with several media houses variously as a proof reader, reporter, staff writer and Assistant Editor. Prizes he has won include the Association of Nigerian Authors/Cadbury Poetry Prize (twice) and the National Media MeritAward.

  • Lasisi, Garba present Phenomenal Lagos

Last year May, two art journalists Akeem Lasisi (Punch) and Kabir Alabi Garba (The Guardian) started writing a book intended to capture some iconic places in Lagos. They planned to present it as part of their contributions to the Lagos @50 celebration that ended last month, but that was not to be.

At a recent sneak preview and presentation of the 120-page book titled: Phenomenal Lagos: 50 Iconic places in the Centre of Excellence, to some arts and culture writers in Lagos, the authors recalled how the journey began, urging colleagues to explore the many opportunities provided by the profession to enhance themselves. They added that journalists should never be discouraged by whatever challenges they may face.

The coffee-colour, hard cover book contains comprehensive profiles, photographs and poems on the selected iconic places. It celebrates the socio-cultural and political monuments of Lagos. Its aesthetically packaged sharp pictures complemented the brief history and poetic verses that illuminate the souls of the sites to its readers.

To the duo,  the publication aimed to enrich the historical archive in an attempt to preserve Lagos cultural heritage. In the course of selection, the authors considered the five divisions of Lagos called ‘Ibile’, which include Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Ikeja and Lagos Island.

“We decided to do a comprehensive research and found out why some places bear the name they are called today. We found out why Mushin is called Mushin. Why Agege is called Agege and many more like that. We aimed for a very high quality so as to be presentable in places that matter,” said Lasisi.

On the challenges encountered, Garba said they have learnt a lot of lessons. “The major lesson we learnt in this journey is that nothing is impossible. If you go for any event, present something unique and presentable and don’t stop at that. Interpret your stories. Learn how to manage your life wherever you find yourself.”

The seasoned art writers acknowledged Lagos State’s support towards the realisation of the project, especially at the printing stage of the book. They noted that the selection of the various places was done in conjunction with Mr. Steve Ayorinde, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

“We didn’t stop at culture and tourism. We considered the political, historical, religious and business landscape of Lagos in our selection. In the book, you will find such edifices like stock exchange, computer village, whispering palm for tourism, City Hall, Lagos House, the first judiciary building in Lagos, point of no return, first church in Nigeria, first mosque in Lagos, Eko Hotel and others,” Lasisi said.

In the foreword to the book, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun described the book as a direct interpretation of celebrating those socio-cultural and political monuments of Lagos. “Some of the iconic places featured are history personified. Others directly project the state’s tradition and culture, including some that justifiably echo its economic destiny,” Prof Fagbohun said.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde said in the prologue that the uniqueness of the compendium lies in the poetic verses that complement the brief history and pictorial representation of each of the 50 iconic sites.

Lasisi, who is Assistant Editor with The Punch, has distinguished himself as a performance poet in the past 25 years He has also performed poetry in different parts of Nigeria and countries like South Africa, Germany and Brazil.

Similarly, Garba, who holds Masters of Science degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University, Lagos as well as Post graduate Diploma Certificate in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba Ikeja Lagos, is an Assistant Editor with The Guardian.

Lasisi threatens Bash Ali’s Guinness World Book of Records’ title fight

Joe Lasisi, a former African Boxing Union light heavyweight champion, on Wednesday threw a challenge to fight Bash Ali, for the “Guinness World Book of Records’’ title fight.

Lasisi, 60, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that “Ali should accept my challenge if he really wants to prove he deserves to be in the record book.

“I have decided to come out of retirement; I’m fit and ready and Ali should accept my challenge and let us see who is truly Nigeria’s great.”

NAN reports that the National Sports Commission(NSC) on January 7 in Abuja inaugurated a Local Organising Committee(LOC) for the proposed Bash Ali Guinness World Book of Records title fight. Ali will be 58 on February 27.

Lasisi said if Ali accepts his challenge, he would remind Nigerians of the “dazzling display” that earned him his reputation as one of the country’s best boxers.

Lasisi was at different times the National, African and Commonwealth light heavyweight boxing champion before he retired.

Responding, Ali said he was willing to accept Lasisi’s challenge on the condition that a contract would be signed for “a winner takes all battle.”

Ali boasted that he was ready for any opposition, adding that his only concern was that Lasisi could decide to pull out of the contest.

“A fight with Lasisi, two years ago would have been good but he chickened out of it because he was scared. I believe I can conquer any opponent. Lasisi can come with everything he’s got; I’m ready for him. But we must sign an agreement before the fight will hold,” Ali said.

Ali, a former World Cruiser weight Boxing Champion, said nothing would stop him from writing his name in the Guinness World Book of Records.
