    LASUED summit examines challenges in teaching, others

    The Directorate of Teaching Practice at the Lagos University of Education (LASUED) Otto-Ijanikin, Lagos, has convened a summit  to identify prevalent issues affecting teaching practices among undergraduate teachers in the state and to offer practical solutions.

    The summit  held on Tuesday at the main campus, with various education stakeholders attending.

    Discussions centred on the impact of teaching practices on the quality of education, highlighting education as a crucial tool for empowering children to succeed in life. It was recommended that only adequately trained teachers should be recruited to impart knowledge at both primary and secondary school levels.

     Acting Director of the Directorate of Teaching Practices at the university, Dr Foluke Abimbola Akinkuotu  stated that the summit aimed to identify the obstacles encountered by student-teachers and explore innovative solutions to enhance their teaching practice.

    Akinkuotu outlined three vital areas essential for improving the quality of teaching practices: mentorship and support, practical experience, as well as feedback and enhancement. She emphasised that these factors play a pivotal role in producing competent teachers capable of delivering quality education.

    Distinguished speakers at the summit and seasoned educators delved into pertinent issues and advocated for strategies for improvement. They also called for government support in creating a conducive learning environment conducive to growth.

    Prof. Femi Fakolade, a lecturer, emphasised the importance of synergy between students and teachers, underscoring the necessity for teachers to have a solid grasp of subject matter knowledge to effectively guide their students in the classroom.

    Fakolade also highlighted the significance of modest attire as a cultural norm that teachers should embrace to garner respect and admiration from their students, noting that indecent dressing contributes to instances of female harassment in academic settings.

    Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Dr Emi Shittu stated that the forum aimed to address teaching practice challenges in primary and secondary schools in the state through increased monitoring by education stakeholders.

    He praised Lagos State’s proactive approach in addressing educational challenges through continuous training for professional educators.

    President of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) Lagos State Chapter, Masheyi Olushola stressed the importance of personal development and a passion for teaching in exuding confidence and achieving excellence as a teacher. He urged teachers to broaden their knowledge beyond their specialised fields, highlighting that continuous learning and staying abreast of global trends enhance a teacher’s quality.

    Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Kasali Wahab, called for curriculum updates to align with the evolving needs of the economy, particularly in the realm of information technology. He expressed readiness for collaboration with initiatives such as the summit to address educational challenges, emphasising the importance of practical sessions for students to complement theoretical teaching for quality assurance.

    Lucy Emike Omoala, Director of the Lagos State Comprehensive Schools Programme, encouraged teachers to foster creativity and innovation to stay ahead of their students in subject matter knowledge. She emphasised the need for teachers to uphold high standards to instil discipline and order in schools, urging them to take pride in their profession.

    Representative of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria(TRCN), Dr Biliki Sani, advised teachers to register with the council for official recognition and identification by the government.

    She emphasised the importance of embracing the teaching profession with pride and confidence.

    The summit provided an interactive platform for undergraduate students at the university to voice their perspectives on teaching practices, calling for a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges faced in the teaching profession.

    Teachers were urged to embrace technological advancements to remain relevant in today’s global educational landscape, while students were encouraged to actively engage, explore new avenues, and empower themselves academically.

    LASUED VC applauds ex-student leader for advancement of education 

    Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Otto-Ijanikin/Noforija ,Epe, Lagos, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, has applauded former student leader at Lagos State University (LASU) Mr Yusuf Adetimirin for initiating  ideas towards the advancement of education in the country.

    Speaking on campus, the VC said youths should emulate the ex- president of Language, Arts and Social Science Education Students’ Association(LASSESA) at LASU and foster the socio-economic development of the nation.

    The don was speaking against the backdrop of the soon-to-be launched Naija Education Clinic (NEC), an educational centre championed by Adetimirin. 

    Lafiaji-Okuneye, however expressed her support for the project,adding that more of such initiatives would not only better the lot of citizens,but put Nigeria among the comity of great nations.

    She said: “It is a great initiative which will further lead to the socio-economic development of the country. Education is quite crucial to nation building and constructing an institution to that would cater to the needs of the less privileged is quite commendable. With quality education, Nigeria will climb the ladder of greatness.”

    Adetimirin, on his part, expressed readiness to support Tinubu in his drive to provide accessible and quality education to people through the establishment of the soon-to-be launched Naija Education Clinic (NEC).

    On the project,he said: “In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision anchored on making education accessible to every Nigerian child, anticipate the establishment of a world-class learning centre where education will be free for all ,while  we make Nigeria one of the greatest countries in the world. At NEC, we shall connect the dot of President Tinubu’s legacies in education from pioneering payment of WAEC  fees of candidates in 2002 to the establishment of the Students’ Loan Scheme in 2024.

    “Every Nigerian child deserves quality education. The imperative of education cannot be overemphasized — education is light; one that delivers from the darkness of ignorance. Hence, it significant to  bequeath  a great future and legacy to this generation and the ones yet unborn.

    “We want to ensure all children are given self- security in form oa world-class learning environment for out-of- school children ( deprived, underprivileged and  special children). Major goal of the school is to emphasize technology, innovation and agriculture.

    “Children from different villages in the north, south and east will be nurtured for a greater Nigeria; ‘thou tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand’, as President Tinubu rightly said.

    “The school, mainly boarding, will focus on getting underprivileged  children to attain greater heights. It will be sited on 100 acres of land with top-of-the-range world-class facilities. We hope to make it a modern-day learning centre for total and inclusive education.

    Our vision consists largely in leadership by product.

    We are targeting 200 children in each  of the 774 local government areas  in Nigeria,  translating to 154,800 children at inception.

    “The Naija Education Clinic (NEC) will serve as a hub for transformation of the human mind, a solution centre that will not only advance the development of the nation, but further boost Nigeria’s rating among the comity of great nations of the world.

    We are committed to not just theoretical aspect of learning with the synergy and intellect of great scholars, but will ensure effective hands-on and practical education.

    We shall align the town and gown by breaking the shackle of poverty through nurturing of ideas and promoting the children’s creativity.”

    The  ex-LASSESA president noted that he deferred his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme to see to the successful completion of the Tinubu Student Square project he initiated on LASU campus in Ojo, adding that if everyone shows commitment to education, without leaving it for government alone, the country will overcome it challenges.

    “What is honouring when the honoured is not aware, this has made me to wait for two years after graduation denying myself of NYSC after siting a symbolic project for Tinubu in LASU, the first of such in all universities across the nation.

    The Executive Secretary, Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, has  said the newly-trained Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) Campus Ambassadors would act as first responders of sexual and gender based  (SGBV) on the campus.

    She said this was to further leverage on education as a tool for prevention of all forms of abuse within the institution.

    Mrs Vivour-Adeniyi stated this during the just concluded  two-day training for the LASUED Campus Ambassadors which held at the institution’s library, with 30 persons in attendance.

    The DSVA Executive Secretary pointed out the importance of addressing the SGBV menace which she said was to emphasise the State Government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating SGBV on campuses and how crucial their roles are in the process. 

    She expressed hope that the initiative would spur peer learning and peer accountability, and it would also encourage the bystander culture of students being responsive in precarious situations, especially on campus.

     The Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Rilwa Dawodu, who represented the Vice Chancellor, appreciated the DSVA team for bringing the initiative to  LASUED and said it would stem the tide of the menace to the barest minimum.

    He urged the DSVA team to also extend the initiative to their other campus located at Epe. 

    Before the first discourse, a pre-test was conducted to ascertain the knowledge of participants on issues of SGBV.

    Damilare Adewusi, Head, Community Engagement Lagos DSVA, explained the existing State Laws and policies of SGBV and took participants on the dos and don’ts while interfacing with survivors.

     Ms. Kafayat Salami Community Engagement Officer DSVA explained psychological first aid where she  emphasised that the use of empathic words, emotional intelligence and educating survivors on the various support services accessible at the agency was sacrosanct. 

    Mr. Tobi Ikudayisi enlightened the participants on the overview of SGBV where he listed the various forms of abuse, the myths about rape and sexual harassment as well as  the psychological effects of SGBV.

     Dr. Bola Elegbede, the Director of, SGBV LASUED Response Team appreciated the DSVA team for bringing the initiative to LASUED and gave assurance that the training would be beneficial to all.

     Certificates of participation were subsequently presented to the participants by the DSVA team.

    LASUED Table Tennis team shines at HOS Games

    Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) table tennis teams performed excellently at the just-concluded 2023 edition of Head of Service (HOS) Games.

    The HOS Games  is an  annual competition  among staff of  various government parastatals in Lagos State.

    The LASUED team comprising the trio of   Hamzat Rasaq, Azeez Fatai  and Olubanwo Eniola  put up series of dominant displays against their various opponents and won gold medal in Men’s team category, silver medal in Mixed doubles, gold medal in Men’s doubles before rounding off their excellent run in the championship with yet, another resounding victory by clinching gold in Men’s singles of the same competition.

    Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, while receiving them in her office, described members of the team as formidable ambassadors of the institution who have written their names in gold.

    “You have made us proud and showed us you are good ambassadors of Lagos State University of Education. Management will continue to encourage both staff and students to do better in their passion,” she said.

    She urged them  to push themselves beyond limit  and continue to make LASUED a household name in sport activities within and outside the country.

    The Chairman, Sports Advisory Committee, LASUED, Dr. Joseph Oluwafemi Olabode and Director, Directorate of Sports,  Dr. Adeniyi Jimmy thanked the VC  and management team for their support and for  bringing all round development to sports in the university.
