The Lagos State University of Science and Technology  (LASUSTECH) on Monday celebrated its 4th Founders’ Day, highlighting remarkable institutional growth, infrastructural development, and its vision for science- and technology-driven education.

The event, themed:  “Mapping the Future,” featured a welcome address by the Vice Chancellor, a keynote lecture, awards for academic excellence, and a facility tour showcasing the university’s expanding teaching and research capacity.

The Vice Chancellor  Prof. Olumuyiwa  Odusanya, described the Founders’ Day as a moment of reflection, assessment, and renewed commitment.

“It is like a birthday — a time to measure progress and say this is what we have achieved in four years,” he said.

Odusanya noted that the university has recorded significant milestones since its establishment.

“We have moved from having no students to almost 13,000 students, successfully run three academic sessions without interruption, and we are preparing students who will be graduating in the next four to five months,” he stated.

According to him, LASUSTECH currently has 25 fully accredited programmes, with an additional 14 programmes awaiting accreditation results expected in early 2026. He added that strong government support, especially from the Lagos State Government, has played a key role in the institution’s steady progress.

Beyond celebration, the Vice Chancellor explained that the Founders’ Day also served as an opportunity to showcase facilities and systems put in place to strengthen teaching, learning, and research, while building a distinct brand identity for the university.

The keynote speaker,  Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, Prof.  Adenike Oladiji emphasised that sustainable national development requires long-term investment in science and technology, strong foundational science education, and sound research infrastructure.

Her lecture was entitled: “Why Universities of Technology?”

She explained that although Nigeria’s industrial activities expanded from the 1950s, the country’s vast potential has not been fully harnessed due to weak scientific and technological education.

A team of students at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has clinched first place, bagging N2.5 million at the CodeFest Africa Hackathon award night held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

CodeFest Africa Hackathon is an annual flagship event organised by Codefest Africa, a digital innovation ecosystem dedicated to bridging the gap between education, technology, and employment across the continent by empowering young developers, designers, innovators, and tech enthusiasts primarily from Nigeria, and  Africa to collaborate on building scalable digital solutions for real-world challenges.

With the theme:  “Build for Nigeria”,it  was a massive virtual event which attracted  over 5,000 individual participants drawn from different local and foreign tertiary institutions to include,  University of Lagos (UNILAG); Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU); Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana; Ahmadu Bello University (ABU Zaria); University of Nigeria (Nsukka); Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA); University of Benin (UNIBEN); University of Ibadan (UI); and LASUSTECH, among others.

The over 5,000 participants which were organised into more than 100 developer teams of young innovators, designers, developers, and tech enthusiasts, collaborated on prototypes aimed at addressing 24 real-world challenges across six sectors which are fintech, agriculture, health, education, climate change and open innovation, with a technological emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI), web/app development, and blockchain.

The LASUSTECH’s team, known as Vitalink, included, Joshua Onyeka (Computer Science, 300-level), Ohieku Eneji Peacemaker (Mechatronics Engineering, 400-level), Ituma Chidi Moses (Computer Science, 300-level), and Makanjuola Emmanuel Iseoluwa (Computer Science, 300-level).

Their winning innovation is a custom wearable device capable of live data streaming of vital signs such as ECG and SpO. It was designed so well to the amazement of the judges who  praised the project for its originality, technical competence, and practical potential, thus, landing them into triumph.

Reacting to the victory, the Vitalink team leader, Onyeka, expressed joy over the victory which he described as “a great achievement”, adding that it was a materialisation of hardwork.

In his words: “I felt really excited and honestly a bit shocked. It was a big achievement for me, and knowing that our hard work paid off, made the moment even more special.

“There were many teams, about 100 of them, that participated. But only 12 teams were shortlisted. Out of those, just 3 made it to the finals, including us.

“Our project was a solution designed to make reading and recording of patient vitals easier, stress free and more efficient. We built it to help in the tele-health section by building a remote patient monitoring system.

“I think the “wow” factor was how simple but effective our solution was, and how accurate it worked in predicting health vitals using our own trained AI models.

“We focused on solving a real problem in a practical way, and we presented it clearly, so the judges could see its impact immediately. And because we also built a working hardware and prototype, that sealed everything,” he disclosed.

Reflecting on the tough times and rigours of the project and how it was managed, he explained however, that,

“The hardest moment was when our application app crashed, the internet was very slow, we ran out of time, a feature wasn’t working we handled it by staying calm, focusing on the solution, and dividing the tasks among ourselves so we could fix it quickly,” he said.

He thanked  LASUSTECH for providing the ambience that encouraged learning, collaboration and innovation, acknowledging the support from their various lecturers and friends which served as the motivating factor to success. He also expressed gratitude to CodeFest Africa for organising the event which he described as an opportunity to learn, compete, and grow.

Meanwhile, receiving the students who presented their project prototype and the N2.5 million prize cheque in his office,  the Vice Chancellor of LASUSTECH, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, congratulated the team, describing their success as a proud moment for the institution. He urged them to refine the prototype and explore opportunities for further development.

Be future-ready, LASUSTECH VC tells matriculating students

The Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has advised newly admitted students to be future-ready and deliberately shape the kind of future they desire.

He gave the charge on Tuesday during the matriculation ceremony for first-year and direct entry students, as the university matriculated 3,272 undergraduates for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Prof. Odusanya described the ceremony as the formal commencement of the students’ undergraduate training and a defining moment in their academic journey.

Urging them to confront the uncertainties of the future, the Vice Chancellor encouraged the students to actively create opportunities for themselves, noting that progress is driven by individuals who dare to imagine and build what does not yet exist.

“The way to take uncertainty out of the future is to create the future you genuinely want. I urge you, therefore, to be future-ready undergraduates. I urge you to think of many things and create in this digital age, because many others created the future we now live in,” he said.

Drawing inspiration from history, Prof. Odusanya cited the moonshot ambition of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, as an example of visionary leadership.

He added that the digital age presents Nigerian students with unprecedented access to tools for innovation and problem-solving.

He warned the new students against behaviours that could derail their academic pursuits, including cultism, indecent dressing, absenteeism, drug abuse and wrong associations, stressing that such vices do not contribute to building a positive future.

Prof. Odusanya advised the students to take their studies seriously by attending lectures punctually, engaging fully in practical sessions, and maintaining discipline, while staying connected with their parents and ensuring they are traceable at all times.

The Vice Chancellor also emphasised the importance of acquiring relevant skills, competencies and innovative thinking that would make graduates market ready and nationally relevant.

“A degree may just be a piece of paper, but the skills, the competencies, the knowledge that you should bring to it will define what you get out of that degree,” he said.

He encouraged the students to look beyond the classroom and begin to conceive solutions to national and global challenges, suggesting areas such as technology, engineering and medical research.

“If you can imagine it, you can create it,” he added.

LASUSTECH VC tells 3,272 matriculating students to prepare for future

The Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has tasked 3,272 new undergraduates of the institution to be ready to proactively shape their own futures.

Odusanya made the call in his welcome speech during the 2025/2026 matriculation ceremony for first-year and direct entry students of the university held on Monday, December 8, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor described the event as a formal commencement of undergraduate training. He challenged the new students to prepare for an uncertain future by actively creating the one they desire, citing President John F. Kennedy’s moonshot ambition as a historic example of such future-building.

He noted that the digital age presents vast opportunities for innovation, referencing how access to technology in Nigeria has dramatically expanded beyond past limitations. The address included a firm warning against negative vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, absenteeism, illicit drug use, and wrong associations, stating these would not create a positive future.

Students were instructed to commit fully to their academic work, be punctual, and take practical sessions seriously. They were also advised to build community, maintain contact with parents, and be traceable.

Looking beyond degree certification, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the importance of developing market-ready skills, competencies, and innovative attitudes. He called on students to conceive solutions to national problems, suggesting possibilities like manufacturing multipurpose drones or developing new algorithms.

“Today indeed is a day of good news. The matriculation ceremony marks your formal admission and commencement of your undergraduate training.

“The way to take uncertainty out of the future is to create the future you genuinely want. I urge you, therefore, to be future-ready undergraduates. I urge you to think of many things and create in this digital age, because many others created the future we now live in.”

The address outlined three core pillars for student success: understanding consequences, total commitment to academic work, and looking beyond the degree itself. “A degree may just be a piece of paper, but the skills, the competencies, the knowledge that you should bring to it will define what you get out of that degree,” he said.

Encouraging practical innovation, the Vice Chancellor told the students: “If you can imagine it, you can create it.” He suggested they could develop solutions like multipurpose drones or new algorithms, and even contribute to critical medical research.

Speaking on the significance of the event, the Vice Chancellor described matriculation as a university prerequisite “where students are formally admitted to join the academic community” and where expectations for behavior and academic journey are set.

He described the occasion as a milestone for the institution, which began with no students three years ago and now has a total population exceeding 12,600.

The event, held on Thursday, 18th September 2025, at the university podium, recognised employees who concluded their services meritoriously between 2022 and 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Director, Information & Public Relations of the university, Mr. Lanre Kuye, the honourees include 36 academic and 23 non-academic staff members.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Abiodun Denloye, described the ceremony as a necessary act of institutional gratitude.

Odusanya noted that retirement should never be viewed as an end but as a transition into continued service to humanity, urging honourees to remain active through mentorship and community engagement.

”Odusanya also emphasised the importance of institutional memory, pointing out that the history of LASUSTECH and the legacy institution, LASPOTECH, is incomplete without the selfless work of those we are celebrating today. He added that the university owed its stability and growth to the sacrifices of staff who worked through periods of transition.”

Odusanya said that the occasion underscored LASUSTECH’s culture of respect and sacrifice.

The statement added: “By celebrating our retirees, we reinforce the values of service, integrity, and loyalty which continue to shape this university,” he said. He concluded his message with prayers for the honourees’ health, peace, and long life, quoting Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To everything there is a season.”

”At the event, an official of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Mrs. Morenike Makinde, centred her remarks on retirement benefits and outlined opportunities for post-service fulfilment. She reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its retired workforce.

”The highlight of the ceremony was the formal presentation of certificates of meritorious service, acknowledging the decades of dedication by the retirees, which the university said symbolised not just closure but also recognition of the individual and collective impact on the university’s development.

In his closing remarks, the Registrar, Mr. David Ogungbe, commended the honourees for their loyalty and contribution to academic excellence. He emphasised that their service had left a foundation upon which LASUSTECH must continue to build.

”In his response, a honouree, retired Chief Lecturer and member of the Governing Council of the legacy institution, Mr. Olasunkanmi Longe, commended the leadership of the university for the kind gesture. “I wish to place on record my profound appreciation to the Management of this esteemed University for the singular honour of organising a most befitting retirement ceremony for us. This unprecedented gesture, being the first of its kind in the history of the Institution, has not only dignified our exit but has also set a noble precedent and enduring legacy for future occasions.”
