  • Pump Action gun found on me was collateral for loan, says suspect

A suspected drug baron identified as James Ameh (54), who was arrested by the Kogi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has claimed that the Pump Action gun found on him served as collateral from a friend who he still owes him N80,000.

The suspect who was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, was found in possession of a loaded Pump Action gun.

About 40 personnel of the NDLEA along side officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) left from Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, to effect the arrest of Amen, who had been on the wanted list of the command for several months.

It was gathered that the suspect who was arrested in Igolijo, Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area, allegedly has 10 hectares of land where he cultivated cannabis sativa (Indian Hemp).

Ameh who was arrested alongside six other suspects, namely: Usman Bello, Eze Stanley, Innocent Ameh, Samuel Idoko, Ojima Ojo and Ekene Ukwueze told journalists that he got the Pump Action gun from his friend who he still owes N80,000.

The suspect who is also a  native doctor denied ownership of the gun, saying that it served as collateral towards recovering his money.

According to him: “I am not the real owner of this Pump Action gun. It belongs to a friend who is owing me N80,000. I needed my money back urgently to do something with it. I am sorry; I never knew that having this in my house would put me into trouble. As for the issue of dealing on drugs and having hectares of land for cannabis, it is also not true”.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the arrest the head of the Kogi State Command of the NDLEA, Alhaji Idris Bello, said that the arrest of the suspect and his accomplices, was through information gathered by officers of the command.

  • 5 ways to know she’s ready for you to propose

Even though the old saying goes “when you know, you know,” there are certain signs that it’s time to pop the question that you should look for. Here are ways to ensure she wants you to propose.

    1. She talks about your future together: This is one of the biggest signs your girlfriend wants to take your relationship to the “next step” and get engaged. If she constantly talks about your life together, possibly including buying a house, having children, moving somewhere, etc., she can definitely see a future with you and her being so open about this probably means that she wants you to propose.

    2. She brings you to every family gathering: If you two get married, you will officially become a part of each other’s family. If your girlfriend has been thinking about getting married, she’s probably made efforts to invite you to her family get-togethers. She wants her family to get to know you and vice-versa because she knows that if you get married, you’ll be part of this family! If your girlfriend is obviously pushing to include you in her family, this could be a sign that she wants you to officially join the family, meaning she wants you to propose.

    3. She starts the ‘baby’ talk, even if on a lighter note: This is one topic that even some married couples struggle to address. If your girlfriend randomly drops hints about how she likes babies or shares about her ideas of motherhood, it means she is comfortable talking about children with you. Remember, motherhood is not an easy topic to talk about with anyone unless a woman is comfortable with the person.

    4. She drops hints about how her friends are getting married: Does your girl keeps reminding you about her married friends and frequently expresses how happy she is for them? This might be a good sign that she looks at marriage with a positive attitude and takes inspiration from her married friends. It’s time to fetch the ring if she is surrounded by married couples and she loves spending time with them.

    5. She tells you: If she’s ready to get engaged, not all signs your girlfriend gives you will necessarily be “indirect.” In fact, she might just be straight-forward and tell you that she really wants to get engaged to you. This “sign” is difficult to misinterpret – there’s really no denying that she wants you to propose.

  • Why sex enhancers are dangerous —Clerics

Clerics on Sunday warned youths against the use of trending sexual booster called “Kayan Mata”, saying that it has spiritual implications.

Some of them who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja said that in spite of the fact that some couples believed it’s helping their marriages, it has future repercussions.

Speaking on the effects of using such products, Reverend Joshua Aribisala of the Tabernacle of Glory Church, warned users that there’s always a price for using such products.

“I have heard so much about this Kayan Mata, so many married women in my church have come to ask me if using it tampers with their faith.

“Due to these many questions, I decided to look into the whole Kayan Mata thing and I discovered that some of these sellers invoke demons to make their products effective.

“An example is one blue eye bead that they claim gives protection, the blue eye bead is an amulet that was forged by calling on spirits to grant the user protection.

“However, the devil does not give without taking, the originator of this amulet had to give a sacrifice to the spirits she invoked.

“These things definitely have spiritual implications that may not manifest until much later in the user’s life.”

Aribisala went further to narrate the experience of one of his church members who was given a waist bead by her friend as a gift before her wedding.

“She found out that for the period she kept the waist bead on, she enjoyed good sexual relationship with her husband but the moment she decided to do away with it, her husband suddenly no longer found her attractive and refused to sleep with her.

“Now, she had no idea the waist bead was the cause of her problem until her friend confessed that she had bought the waist bead from one of these Kayan Mata vendors on social media.

“She claimed the waist bead possessed some hypnotic qualities and that the woman should have allowed it to break on its own instead of destroying it herself, so you can imagine the mess she is in,” he said.

High Chief Kukoyi Ijakande, a practicing traditionalist, said that there is a spiritual implication in using such products.

“I am a High priest of Ifa and Orunmila teaches us that whatever you get forcefully will not last, a lot of these Kayan Mata products, though are made with herbs, are concocted calling on spirits that could be dangerous.

“When you use products that are said to bond you to your husband forever, don’t you know that the bonding goes beyond the physical realms?

“Some women have altered their husband’s destinies through the use of these products, they call on spirits to keep their husbands tied to them and in return, the spirits begin dining on the husband’s ethereal form.

“Or when a woman uses a kajal guaranteed to get her anything she wants, the day she gets tired of the man, he might run mad, every spiritual action has a reaction,” he said.

He, however, appealed to people especially women to stop using such items for their husbands because it might affect them in the long run.

Also, Imam Yakubu Umar said that spiritual leaders had always warned against the use of such products but because of the rate some men cheat on their spouse, women still use such products.

He said that those products would definitely have their repercussions in the future but some men won’t stop cheating on their spouse and women who don’t want to lose their homes engage in it.

According to him, everyone should seek the face of God for mercy and forgiveness of sins because a lot is happening in this present generation.

According to Mrs. Rekiya Adamu, a 63-year-old housewife, the purpose of Kayan Mata has been defeated.

“During my days as a young newly married lady, Kayan Mata was used to sweeten the marriage bed. It used to be a means to get sexual satisfaction for both the husband and wife, but now, there are different spiritual manipulative tools that people claim is Kayan Mata.

“They have bastardized the whole purpose with some sellers of the new ones even going as far as invoking spirits into those products.”

She, however, said that some Kayan Mata were made from natural products like nuts and seeds.

Adamu added that a lot of the products in the market have been mixed with things beyond the physical, asking youths to desist from them. (NAN)

  • LCCI sets agenda for President Buhari’s 2nd term

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) says the quality of the nation’s infrastructure, policies and institutions are crucial to driving economic diversification.

Mr. Muda Yusuf, Director-General of LCCI, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

He noted that it was crucial to get the parameters right and ensure proper alignment among the variables to achieve sustainable economic diversification.

According to him, the policy mix of monetary, foreign exchange, interest rate, tax, trade, procurement, and investment policies are critical to the economic diversification process and to achieve desired outcomes.

“The monetary policy should be designed to drive domestic investment through moderation of the monetary tightening stance of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“This is needed to moderate interest rate in the economy because it is difficult to drive domestic investment at current levels of interest rate which is well over 25 percent for most economic players,” he said.

Yusuf stressed that the economy required investment, especially domestic direct investment to drive the diversification agenda.

According to him, the current multiplicity of rates in the foreign exchange policy is inimical to sustainable economic diversification.

He said that the tax policy should be better attuned to economic diversification through a reversal of the tax burden from investors to consumers.

“The three tiers of government targets investors more than consumers and this is not in consonance with best practice principles in taxation.

“In an economy which is almost 50 percent informal, this structure of taxation is not investment friendly because the formal sector of the economy bears the largest burden of the tax system,” he said.

Yusuf said the use of banks as collection agents for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) was disruptive, distracting, arbitrary, oppressive and unfair to investors.

He noted that it was a serious disincentive to investment and the promotion of financial inclusion, adding that the approach should be discontinued.

The LCCI boss also stressed that the trade policies should be guided by sectoral competitive and comparative advantage to ensure sustainability.

He said that institutional capacity to enforce the policies should also be considered in trade policy formulation.

“Policies should be focused on incentivizing resource-based industries which typically has a competitive advantage and good impact on the economy because of the high multiplier effect.

“The relativity of tariffs between Nigeria and neighboring countries should also be considered in the formulation of trade policy,” he said.

He stressed that fixing the country’s infrastructure was critical to building a competitive economy and a fundamental requirement for economic diversification and sustainable job creation.

Yusuf said that transformation in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors largely depends on the quality of infrastructure.

“A key focus of diversification should be on resource-based industries – agro-allied, oil and gas, manufacturing with high local content.

“These sectors will strengthen the capacity of the economy to create jobs, drive inclusive growth, promote income redistribution and generally impact positively on the economy.”

According to him, a lot of potentials still needs to be unlocked in the oil and gas sector, especially in refineries, fertilizers plants, gas-based industries and petrochemicals.

“We need to put an end to being just a crude oil exporter to self-sufficiency in petroleum products and exporter of refined products and other gas related products,” he said.

Yusuf urged agencies of government to be more investment-friendly and demonstrate better sensitivity to the plight of investors towards promoting investment and economic growth. (NAN)

  • Inside the world of 29-year-old Calabar Yahoo Yahoo kingpin

A raid last weekend by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and police resulted in the arrest of suspected fraudsters, including one of the suspected kingpins, Akpojivi Onoriode, 29, a graduate of Fine and Applied Arts from the Delta State University, Abraka.

EFCC officials arrested Akpojivi, who claimed to be a shareholder of Eleme Petrochemical Company. His fate sent shockwave down the Internet underworld in the region.

Akpojivi, who goes by a number of sobriquets, including ‘Onos B’, ‘Mr. Blinks’, and ‘Mr. White’ because of his love for white cars, clothes, houses, etc, was described as one of the ‘most highly connected 419 operators’.

He claimed on his Instagram page to be the chief executive officer of companies and also a shareholder of ERPC, Port Harcourt.

But security operatives and sources at the EFCC said they were just façade for illegitimate businesses.

Those who knew him from his DELSU days told our reporter on the phone that he was a very bright student and a good painter.

But he made his mark as a blinker (wearer of flashy and expensive jewellery) during his undergraduate days.

“We did not expect that he could be found out in a faraway place like Calabar, where he has being living for years now,” a source told our reporter.

The suspect, it was gathered, left Asaba, Delta State for Calabar and settled in the serene satellite town, a growing suburban settlement adjoining the University of Calabar shortly after he got married in 2014.

He lived there with his wife and two children before his arrest last Saturday.

“During his days in Abraka, he was very popular, along with some of his friends because of his expensive lifestyle and love for white clothes, cars and houses – his best friend (name withheld) was also popular, but his choice was red cars.

“To celebrate his engagement to his then girlfriend (now wife) in December 2014, he bought her a white Toyota Rav4 SUV.

“Last year, to commemorate the engagement, he bought his wife a N20million Mercedes Benz GLE and flaunted it on his Instagram page, just as he did the Toyota Corolla he bought for his mother,” the source said.

Akpojivi’s social media pages tell the story of wealth, taste for luxurious clothes, jewellery, white cars and houses, for himself and his wife, popularly called LePosh.

He, his wife and two daughters made regular vacation trips to exotic locations in Africa and the Middle East.

However, on Tuesday in Calabar, ‘Mr. White’s house, a white duplex located in a developing area of Calabar, was deserted, as only a guard was seen loitering in an uncompleted bungalow.

The gate was locked and it appeared no one was in, but the guard would not be drawn into discussion about the fate of the house owner.

A resident in the area, who preferred anonymity, said the suspect’s luxurious lifestyle had always piqued his curiosity.

“He was very quiet, but we suspected he was into something fraudulent. This is because of the kind of life we saw him living. But based on the kind of life he lived, it was not easy for him not to be noticed.

“I mean he is a very young man, in fact a boy, who owns such a big and fine house in an area considered a highbrow.

”He drives expensive cars. He has expensive items and so on. We wonder what kind of job he is doing that he has such money at such a young age.

“It was not really our business, so we did not go about probing. We only suspected that he was into this kind of business.

“Most times we ran into him at a popular hotel around here and this further fuelled our suspicion of him, because of the way he spent money. As I said, he is a quiet person.

“We know that other boys who we suspect do these kinds of business are always loud, pouring expensive drinks and making noise.

“But he is not like that. He is always calm and gentle. But he is always spending money freely.”

Police spokesperson Irene Ugbo said eight boys were arrested last week in the same area for alleged involvement in Internet fraud.

She said they got intelligence report on the activities of the suspected fraudsters and carried out a sting operation where the boys were arrested.

Ugbo said they were being profiled and investigations were ongoing, after which they would be arraigned.

She said laptops and other items were recovered from them.

It was learnt that similar raids have been planned for major cities, especially Asaba, Warri and other parts of the region where the illicit trade is prevalent.

  • Okorocha’s Certificate of Return: Court decides PDP’s fate Thursday

The Federal High Court Abuja has fixed May 9 to rule on an application by the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) seeking to be joined as parties in a suit filed by Imo Governor, Rochas Okorocha, over his Certificate of Return.

Justice Okon Abang fixed the date on Wednesday following arguments from counsel on why the party should or should not be joined as an interested party in the suit.

Presenting his argument, counsel to PDP, Mr Stanley Imo, posited that the objection to his client’s application for joinder by Okorocha on the grounds that his client was already adequately represented was misguided.

He said that because the second defendant in the suit, Mr. Jones Onyereri, was a candidate of the PDP in the election under contention was not enough reason to shut the PDP out of the proceedings.

“We beg to disagree with this line of argument because this court, differently constituted, joined the defendant (All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA), as an interested party even when the 3rd defendant (Osita Izunaso) was a candidate of the 7th defendant.

“It is not in doubt that a political party that sponsored a candidate is an interested party in an action of this nature.

“The Electoral Act says the two people who can challenge the outcome of an election are the political party that sponsored a candidate or the candidate himself.”

He submitted that it was wrong for Okorocha to say that the interest of the PDP could not be pursued by it, independent of its candidate.

Imo prayed the court to discountenance the objection of Okorocha and allow his client to be joined as a party, adding that the interest to be considered should be that of the party and not of the counsel.

The Counsel to Okorocha, Mr Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), objected to PDP being joined as a party on the ground that the application was brought in bad faith.

“The application was brought for the purpose of truncating, delaying and frustrating the prompt hearing of this matter.

“Mr Imo is someone I have great respect for but the court will find that from records, when the matter came up on April 5, he appeared for the 2nd defendant.

“He also appeared as counsel to the 2nd defendant on April 9 and during all the proceedings, the urgency of the matter was highlighted and that was why accelerated hearing was ordered.

“The matter was adjourned for definite hearing only for Imo to come round, disengage from the 2nd defendant’s team and file this application to frustrate the matter.”

Ogunwumiju urged the court to look beyond Imo’s delay tactics and consider the nature of the dispute, which was time sensitive, in exercising its discretion, saying PDP was not a necessary or desirable party.

In a short bench ruling, Justice Abang, agreed that the matter was time sensitive but gave assurance that all parties would be given fair hearing.

He adjourned the matter until May 9 to rule on whether to join the PDP as a party in the suit or not.

Earlier, there had been a long argument from counsel as to whether PDP’s application for joinder should be heard or not.

The court had finally ruled that it would be a denial of fair hearing for a person seeking to be joined as a party in a suit to be shut out.

Okorocha is in court asking for an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him with a Certificate of Return as the Senator-elect for Imo West Senatorial District.

The matter was first assigned to Justice Taiwo Taiwo, but following an allegation of bias, he rescued himself from hearing the matter and returned the case file to the Chief Judge of the court for reassignment.
