  • CEO lauds Fashola’s housing estate

    CEO lauds Fashola’s housing estate

CHAIRMAN/Chief Executive Officer, RedBrick Homes Ltd, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi, has praised the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, for signing all necessary papers for the building of a 700-unit fully furnished duplexes, mansions and luxury three-bed room flats in Amen Estate, Lekki Peninsula.

Speaking during the opening of the estate, Gbadamosi said that they started building the houses many years ago and at that time they only had few patronages.

“Only about 10 people bought homes here. But because of the housing policy of this in Nigeria, over 80 houses have been bought already and as we are building, several people are showing interest in them.

“For about seven years now, 63,000 housing units have been delivered to Nigerians and Amen Estate is adding about 700 housing units to this number. We know that with the way we’re going, very soon we will add major chunk to the thousands of housing units that the government will deliver to Nigerians.”

President Goodluck Jonathan who did the inauguration said the enabling environment and housing policies of the present administration has spurred private individuals like Gbadamosi to invest in housing in the country.

Represented by the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi, he said the housing units in Amen Estate are world-class buildings which will stand the test of time because of the quality of work done.

“The type of structures in this estate suggests that the facilities used are durable and of high quality and whoever buys any of them will not have to worry about repairs for so many years to come, because every material used in the buildings are world-class,” she stated.

While commending Gbadamosi for aligning with the government’s resolve to eradicate housing problems in the country, she gave a road map for affordable housing by every Nigerian, irrespective of class.

“Those interested in owning affordable homes are encouraged to apply and then they will be given the homes while they pay over a period of 15 to 20 years,” she said.

She, however, said that with the arrangement, Nigerians do not need to pay huge millions of naira to own houses. “Even the poor can as well own houses through this same arrangement,” she added.

  • BON 2014: Amaechi lauds Nollywood

    BON 2014: Amaechi lauds Nollywood

•As Iyabo Ojo, Desmond Elliot, Ivie Okujaye, Tope Tedela shine

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has praised the Nigerian motion picture industry for what he described as its pivotal role in the nation’s economy.

Amaechi, who spoke at the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, which held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, last Thursday, noted that not only did Nollywood start as a protest literature by addressing social issues, but it also provided employment for several people in the movie production chain.

But a report purportedly saying that the governor insulted Nollywood practitioners who trained in other professional areas has now gone viral in the social media.

The governor, who arrived Port Harcourt for the awards ceremony that evening from his trip to Abuja, where General Muhammadu Buhari had declared interest as APC 2015 presidential aspirant the previous day, had just presented Recognition Awards to veteran artistes such as Liz Benson-Ameye, Nobert Young, Kasimu Yero and Adebayo Salami, when he was asked to give his speech on the occasion.

“Let me say, first and foremost, that this organisation is entirely that of BON Awards…” As if the governor knew that his speech might be misrepresented, he said: “If you were not my friends, we probably wouldn’t have had this hall for use, as some government officials had fixed a dinner or cocktail here this evening before I arrived. But I told them to move it to the other side.” This statement was greeted with thunderous applause.

Amaechi went further to state how Nollywood had rescued the Nigerian economy, by employing hundreds of thousands of Nigerian youths who, despite their qualifications, may have remained jobless because of the unemployment challenge in Nigeria. Speaking interactively, the governor had asked the audience at each point, if they agreed with his analysis.

Corroborating his remarks, popular entertainer, Okey Bakassi, confessed he is an Agricultural Engineering graduate of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. This threw the hall into another round of laughter.

The governor then recalled a recent conversation between actress Kate Henshaw and her colleague, Basorge Tariah Jnr., on how they both used to trek the streets in search of jobs and how Nollywood became the saving grace.

He then delved into a similar challenge in the banking sector, where a good number of female staff are employed for marketing, noting that such system had been promoting prostitution indirectly.

He said: “If you look at the Nollywood industry, it first started as a protest literature, an expression by the people that we are tired of the current leadership in Nigeria. We need change. Then, funding of the industry became a problem. The Onitsha traders who began to fund these films now determined what kind of contents that were made. At that point, it was no longer about protest literature… So, they began to explore stories about witchcraft. I stopped watching at that time. But here now, I watched The Meeting (movie produced by Rita Dominic), which again was another protest work of art… In the film, we saw a Minister who was abusing his office; you saw the professor waiting and you saw the whole community of people who tried to see him. But to be able to do so, they have to corrupt the secretary… Our films must continue to explore social issues.”

He, therefore, urged practitioners to look into producing more movies that will address social messages rather than allowing political interest to becloud their works, saying they owe the country that duty as her heroes.

“Nollywood is important to me, as it is important to the Nigerian economy. From Kenneth Okonkwo, who has joined politics, to the producers of The Meeting, there is an underlying message, which is the inability of Nigerian elite to lead Nigeria out of the comatose that we found ourselves,” he said. He added that even where jobs are available, the civil service, for example, sometimes does not employ people based on merit.

The governor then said he had contracted veteran actress Joke Silva to produce into a movie the popular Chinue Achebe’s book, Man of The People, which he said is another socially relevant classic.

The main categories of the awards gave accolades to the like of Iyabo Ojo whose movie, Silence, clinched the Movie of The Year diadem, while Ivie Okujaye and Tope Tedela won the Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

While Desmond Elliot won the Amaka Igwe Director of The Year for the movie, Apaye, Femi Jacobs and Rita Dominic clinched Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively

  • Osho lauds Tornadoes strength

    Osho lauds Tornadoes strength

Head Coach of Nigeria National League side, Kogi United FC, Fatai Osho has disclosed that Niger Tornadoes were the toughest team he has faced at home this season.

Kogi United defeated 10-man Tornadoes 2-0 in the Week 10 encounter of the NNL in Lokoja on Saturday. A third minute spot kick converted by Ademola Ayoola and Ebenezer Odeyemi’s 57th minute goal settled the tie with yet another 100 per cent home win for the Wada Boys.

Tornadoes’ Lukman Ibrahim was sent off in an hour of the pulsating encounter after second bookable offense, but the boys from Confluence State could not capitalise on the deficiencies to increase goal tally.

Despite the victory, coach Fatai Osho admitted it was difficult to play against Tornadoes who he described as a formidable side but commended his boys for holding on to victory.

“It’s so difficult for us to play against Tornadoes, the first half was so poor, but we came out in the second half better oriented and with a lot of tactical adjustment and we are able to get the win. For the result,

I’m so happy, for performance, we can still do a lot and we can only do better with time. Tornadoes are a very formidable and matured team, you will hardly notice they were playing with a man down because they have strength but we were able to overpower them with our style of play and that gave us the day”

The former Remo Stars coach, however, noted Kogi United was moving closer to end its winless run on the road, just as he called for continued support from management, supporters and fans of the club.

“The only thing missing for us is the away point and we are working towards that, we will never relent on that, I believe with more zeal and determination, we will get the job done soon. All we need is to continue to have this same encouragement from the management and our fans and supporters, I promise we will make them proud”, said Osho.

Kogi United have so far garnered 15 points from 10 games and will make a trip to Bauchi next week to take on Group A league leaders Wikki Tourists.

  • Glo lauds Giwa, Nembe’s return to Premier League

Glo lauds Giwa, Nembe’s return to Premier League

Title sponsor of the Nigeria Premier League, Globacom, has described the re-admission of Nembe City of Bayelsa and Giwa FC of Jos to the league as a right step in the right direction.

Both clubs were banned by the League Management Company (LMC) from participating in the elite league after they failed to meet the pre-requisite standards for participation. But they got a reprieve a fortnight ago after the LMC stamped their re-entry upon meeting the conditions set for their managements.

Globacom said that the decision is “good for the development of football in Nigeria.”

“With the formal re-absorption of the two clubs in the league, the NPL will now have the full complement of the 20 clubs to guarantee stiffer competition among the clubs this season,” Globacom said on Tuesday in a statement in Lagos.

“The fans would not have had the benefit of witnessing a newly promoted side like Giwa FC trading tackles with the legendary Rangers International FC of Enugu last week. The result of that encounter shows that the underdogs are becoming giant killers. We believe that this year’s league will produce quality teams and players in Nigeria,” the statement added.

“We are now witnessing an era where any team can win anywhere, home or away. We believe this will make the league to attract more local and international attention,” the statement further said.

As the League enters Week six this weekend, Kano Pillars will hope to stop visiting Taraba United from causing an upset in Kano, same as El Kanemi who will host Lobi Stars in the former’s temporary home in Kano. Dolphins will lock horns with visiting Enugu Rangers in Port Harcourt.

Host Kaduna United will ensure the boys are really united to stop victory-thirsty Heartland of Owerri, while Gombe United will attempt to feast on Sharks at the Patami Stadium, Gombe. In what looks like the battle of Bayelsans, Nembe City will host Bayelsa United. Sunshine Stars and Warri Wolves will jostle for the maximum points at the Akure Stadium.

Sensational Giwa FC will attempt to consolidate at home in Jos, where giant-killing guests Abia Warriors will also seek an upset.

  • APC chieftain lauds Tinubu’s qualities

    APC chieftain lauds Tinubu’s qualities

LAGOS State All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain Hon. Kola Okesanjo has lauded the leadership qualities of the party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. He described him as a master strategist with vision for a new Nigeria.

Okesanjo told reporters in Lagos that the former Lagos State governor has become a political institution, urging his followers to remain loyal to him. He said that, in a country where leadership is critical to national development, Tinubu has shown a great example.

The party stalwalt said that the great leader has an unfinished task of mobilising for power shift at the centre in the national interest. He said Nigeria has hope, if the APC can form the next government.

Okesanjo said: “Tinubu, who is the avatar of the Southwest, is undoubtedly a replica of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and you will quite agree with me that his cap, eye glasses and political sagacity have vindicated him.

“In the last one and half decades in this Fourth Republic, there’s no opposition as formidable as the APC. The important thing to note is that Asiwaju’s leadership has helped to formulate and implement sound polices that have contributed to better the well being of the people either when personally running government or when his disciples are in charge in the APC state.

“From all indications, we hope to see greater development and improvement in the lives of Nigerians from 2015 when Nigerians will likely confer the leadership of the country on t0he APC and when this happens, the tireless efforts and astute leadership of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will be real. He is a great leader”.

The politician said that Tinubu’s disciples, especially Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, have also justified the confidence reposed in them. He noted that they are implementing people-oriented policies and programmes. Okesanjo said: “That is why the two of them deserve second term.
