    LAUTECH elects union leaders

    Students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State went to the polls last Tuesday to elect their leaders but the exercise was marred by controversy, which almost disrupted the process.

    The electoral committee chairman, Oluwaseun Oke, declared Olumide Bakare as the winner of the presidential contest, who beat his closest rival, Samuel Ayeni, with 20 votes. Although, the process was tainted with skirmishes arising from poor management.

    The election, which was initially arranged to hold on May 28, was re-scheduled to last week, following wrangling by the candidates. The school management moved in to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

    The authorities resolved the rift and offered to supervise the process. Olumide’s emergence as president was greeted with excitement by his supporters, who described as “voice of the masses”.

    In a display of sportsmanship, Samuel congratulated the president-elect, urging his supporters to remain calm. He stated his plan to work with him in the interest of the union.

    A student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, died yesterday.

    Fatai Kolawole Morenikeji, a 400-Level student of Chemical Engineering, was playing football with his friends, when he collapsed.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adeniyi Gbadegesin, who addressed the students in front of the Senate Building, declared three days mourning.

    He inaugurated a panel to investigate the incident. The panel has 72 hours to submit its report.

    The Director of Medical Services, Dr. Caleb Adegbosin, confirmed that although the deceased was dead on arrival.

    LAUTECH alumni lay foundation for 1,000-capacity centre

    It was an historic and joyous moment for students, members of staff and management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, last Thursday, when the university’s alumni association laid the foundation of a 1000-seater capacity civic centre.

    The day was special because it was exactly 25 years that the school was established through an edict signed by the Late Colonel Sasaenia Oresanya, who was the governor of the then old Oyo State.

    Known as Oyo State University of Technology, the school started with four faculties and admitted 436 pioneer students.

    President of the alumni association, Mr Jide Bewaji, said the civic centre, which would be completed and inaugurated before next year, would serve as an income generating venture for the association.

    Apart from the hall, the centre would have a mini-library, which would document the auto biography of alumni, who have excelled in their chosen careers.

    The centre is being built on a portion of the 3.3 acre of land assigned to the association by the university management for the ‘alumni village’, which would also house a four-star hotel and an ICT laboratory.

    Laying the foundation of the first block on the proposed site, Pro- Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Wale Omole saluted the creativity and commitment of the alumni executives.

    He urged them not to relent in their efforts to complement the management team in building a greater LAUTECH.

    Omole praised the association for coming up with programmes designed to address unemployment in the country, pledging to support them. Though the university has achieved a lot, Bewaji, who took over as president of the association in November, said it was not yet time for merriment, but to work hard in collaboration with the management to the university the best in Africa and the world at large.

    He pledged to continue to improve the welfare of alumni and students of the school and urged other alumni to seize the opportunity to give back to their alma mater.

    Bewaji said  in a matter of weeks from now, graduates of the university can also apply, process and collect their transcripts within  24 hours as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed to lighten the burned experienced over the years.

    Present at the ceremony were the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sulaiman Adeniyi Gbadegeshin,  the deputy vice chancellor, Prof. Timothy Adebayo, members of the governing council and executives of the alumni association among who were Owoyokun Samson, Charles Farayola, Kamal Oloso and Segun Owolawi. The 25th anniversary cake was also cut to climax the celebration.

    Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho – Oyo state recently held its 12th convocation ceremony for first degree grandaunts.

    The ceremony, which took place at the convocation ground opposite the lecture theatre, had a total number of 4,697 first degree graduates and 9,000 degrees been awarded.

    According to the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Adeniyi Gbadegesin, thirty three students bagged first class honours while 1,144 students bagged second class upper division honours.

    Others according to the Prof. include 2,575 students who bagged second class lower division honours, 692 third class honours graduates as well as 140 nursing students.

    Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who is also the institution’s Chancellor, assured the students that their welfare and development would receive the much needed attention through the enhanced and progressive policies of the new federal government, adding that the hope and prospect for a better future for the youth is now bright.

    He also called on the graduating students to become willing partners in the mission of radical structural change.

    ‘’It is necessary for me to call on you graduates to contribute your fair quota to the development of this country. Remember, the university that produced you has a vision – to be a centre of academic excellence for the advancement of technology in meeting socio-cultural needs of the society.

    ‘’The knowledge you have acquired in this university becomes meaningful only when applied in a way that impacts positively on the society,’’ Tinubu admonished.

  • LAUTECH workers appeal to govt

    The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital Chapter, Osogbo, has appealed to the Osun State government to pay its members’ four-month salaries.

    The union also asked the government to refund its members’ money running into N150 million deducted from associations and cooperatives in the hospital.

    In a February 26 Save-Our-Soul letter by its Chairman and General Secretary, Dr. Kazeem Adebayo and Tokunbo Olajumoke, the association said the hardship is becoming unbearable for medical workers of the institution.

    Last Tuesday, hospital workers embarked on an indefinite strike action which thus paralysed medical activities in the hospital.

  • LAUTECH students make case for cheap cancer drugs

    Students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, have called on the government to provide grants to researchers and local pharmaceutical companies to enable them to produce cheaper drugs for cancer treatment.

    The students led by a 400-Level Medical Laboratory Science student, Oluwatosin Ogunwola, made the appeal in Osogbo, the Osun State on Monday.

    Oluwatosin said the students were in the state to sensitise the people on the need to go for regular cancer screening. Many Nigerians, he said, were living with cancer without knowing about it.

    Oluwatosin said: “The government should provide grants to researchers and pharmaceutical companies to produce cancer drugs, which will be cheaper and affordable to the poor people. Many Nigerians have died of cancer because they learnt about the disease late. Many do not bother to go to hospitals because they believe it is an incurable disease. But early detection and prompt treatment has a way of cushioning the psychological trauma.”

    Oluwatosin urged people, especially those whose family members suffered cancer, to regularly go for checkup.

    He said the theme of 2015 Cancer Day, Not Beyond Us, was appropriate, noting that although cancer elimination seemed insurmountable, but early detection and prompt treatment remained the best measure to stop the disease.

    The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has granted full accreditation to five undergraduate and five post-graduate diploma engineering programmes of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

    The Council, in a letter, listed the undergraduate programmes as Agricultural Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

    It also listed the post-graduate diploma programmes to include Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Agricultural Engineering.

    Signed by the Council’s Registrar, W. Kamila Maliki, the letter said the effective date of accreditation was November 27, last year, and remain valid for five years.

    Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso will host an international conference on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), from today till Friday, at the Senate chamber.

    The conference, with the theme: “Harvesting Research Outcomes: A Practical Plan to Confirm Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals”, is sponsored by Alexander Von Humboldt.

    The convener, Prof. S. O. Jekayinfa, in a statement signed on his behalf by Mark Debo Taiwo, said the conference would attract over 160 paper presentations by professors across the globe, with over 200 participants.

    Prof. Adeboye, Humboldt scientist ambassador in Nigeria, is to give a goodwill message, while the speaker is Prof. Adetanwa Odebiyi.

    The Vice Chancellor, LAUTECH, Prof A. S. Gbadegesin, is expected to declare the conference open.

    Prof. Jekayinfa said the conference would stimulate collaboration and research among experts, such as educationists, sociologists, economists, agronomists, agricultural engineers, civil engineers, environmental scientists,  engineers, geographers, geologists, microbiologists, doctors, policy makers and others.

    The conference will harvest approaches to achieve the MDGs, as evidenced by the research outcome of stakeholders.

    LAUTECH SSANU embarks on indefinite strike

    THE Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has embarked on an indefinite strike  over the non-payment of their 2009/2010, 2011/2012 Earned Allowance.

    The allowance according to the union chairman, Comrade Abimbola Aleshinloye, while addressing journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday, was in line with the agreement reached with the Governing Council of the institution.

    Aleshinloye also lamented that  their salaries for the months of October and November are yet to be paid.

    He said: “The situation, which our members have condoned while we dialogue with the university management, has reached a breaking point which is no longer bearable by our members. Only recently, the union lost a female  member due to non-availability of money to take care of her hospital bill when needed, while many of our members’ children have been sent out of schools for their inability to pay up their wards school fees.

    “The university management informed the union that fund to defray the outstanding arrears of allowances and salaries are not available due to the fact that the owner states government kept defaulting  in fulfilling their financial obligations.”

    Aleshinloye said the union has concluded to embark on an indefinite strike until their salaries of October, November and the last tranche of accrued Earned Allowances are fully paid.

    He appealed to parents, guardians, and all well meaning citizens of Oyo and Osun State to impress it on the owner states government to be alive to their responsibilities.

     

  • Institute inducts LAUTECH Science Lab. graduates

    No fewer than 177 Science Laboratory Technology graduates of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso were inducted by the Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Nigeria (NISLT) last Friday.

    Coordinating the induction and oath taking ceremony, the Registrar of the institute, Dr. Ighodalo Folorunso Ijagbone, urged the inductees to be of good behavior and take their professional conduct very seriously.

    Ijagbone congratulated the inductees for their perseverance and resilience throughout their studies.

    He used the opportunity to congratulate the management of the institution for sustaining the induction. Nonetheless, he charged them not relent in their effort in making the science laboratory technology department one of the best in the country.

    In his keynote address, the chairman of the occasion and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Adeniyi Gbadegesin, congratulated the inductees and their parents. Gbadegesin, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Prof Ezekiel Ayodele, noted that the authorities of LAUTECH are putting everything in place to reposition SLT to adequately discharge its mandate.

    He praised the Head of Department, Dr Sunday Oladoye, for another successful conduct of the induction.

    Earlier, in his welcome address, the Head of Department Science Laboratory Technology, Mr. Sunday Oladoye, admonished the inductees to represent the university well by upholding its good moral standard.
