  • Kano zoological garden obtains new animal species

    The Kano State Zoological Garden, has added Zebra, Crocodile, Impala to its stock of animals at its zoo in Kano to attract more visitors, its Director, Alhaji Lawal Abdullahi, has said.

    The injection of the new species of the animals is part of efforts to modernize the zoo, Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Wednesday.

    He said that the animals were obtained from Bauchi and efforts would continue in raising the standard of the zoological garden to what obtain anywhere in the world.

    The director N1.4 million has been spent on drugs, guns and sanitization of the garden, while three pavilions with the capacity to contain 500 to 800 visitors, had been created.

    Abdullahi said that 85 rangers working at the facility had been promoted, to encourage them to be part of the modernisation process of the zoo.

  • Two brothers arraigned for N.8m fraud

    Two brothers, Hassan Moruf and Hassan Temitope were on Tuesday arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly defrauding a man of N800,000 meant for the purchase of land.

    The bothers are facing a three-count -charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and stealing, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The prosecutor, Emmanuel Kayode, told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 21, 2015 at about 1:30 p.m.at Ogboja Village Oluwo-Kessi, in Abeokuta.

    Kayode said the duo conspired to defraud one Lawal Abdullahi of N800,000 by promising to sell two plots of land to the victim.

    The prosecutor added that the accused persons fraudulently converted the money to their personal use and deprived the complaint of the land.

    He said the offences contravened sections 516, 419 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Oriyomi Sofowora granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

  • Policeman, 15 others killed in Zamfara

    The police in Gusau, Zamfara State, have confirmed the killing of 16 persons, including a policeman, by bandits in Maru Local Government Area.

    Police spokesman Lawal Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that about 150 armed hoodlums riding on motorcycles carried out the act.

    He said the hoodlums invaded the three villages of Tungar Rakumi, Mallamawa and Kangarawa on Saturday.

    The police spokesman said 12 persons were killed in Tungar Rakumi; the rest were killed in Mallamawa and Kangarawa.

    ‘’The bandits, who are suspected to have carried out the attack to retaliate the killing of three suspected cattle rustlers by the community in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area last week, were armed with AK 47 rifles,’’ Abdullahi said.

    He said the police patrol team in the area fought back and over-powered the hoodlums, who escaped with other members of the gang, who were injured during the encounter.

    The spokesman lamented that the police always faced difficulties in trailing hoodlums in the area due to inaccessible terrain and non-availability of telephone network signals.

    He assured that despite the shortcomings, the police would continue to make the state difficult for criminals to operate in.

    Abdullahi urged the people to always notify the nearest security outfit of any suspicious movement in their areas.

    The police in Gusau on Monday confirmed the killing of 16 persons, including a policeman, by armed bandits in Maru local government area of Zamfara.

    The state police command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lawal Abdullahi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that about 150 armed hoodlums riding on motorcycles perpetrated the act.

    He said the hoodlums had invaded the three villages of Tungar Rakumi, Mallamawa and Kangarawa on Saturday night.

    The police spokesman said 12 persons were killed in Tungar Rakumi alone, while the rest four were killed in Mallamawa and Kangarawa.

    ”The bandits, who are suspected to have carried out the attack to retaliate the killing of three suspected cattle rustlers by the community in Birnin Magaji local government area last week, were heavily armed with AK 47 rifles,” Abdullahi said.

    He further explained that the police patrol team in the area fought back and over-powered the hoodlums who escaped with other members of the gang.

    The PPRO lamented that the police always faced difficulties in trailing hoodlums in the area due to inaccessible terrain and non-availability of telephone network signals.
