    LAWAL BLASTS KESHI AGAIN

Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal has said his criticisms of Stephen Keshi were never personal, but his way of ‘helping’ the embattled Super Eagles coach. Garba Lawal has also expressed regret at how Keshi took the criticisms personal.

Speaking in an interview with SL10.ng, Lawal also said he only meant well and was always saying the truth to Keshi, as Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations has proven.

“I wasn’t after his job, but I was helping him to change but he took it personal and if he took it personal, that’s his own problem but I know the national team is for all of us. At least I tried to advise from the little knowledge I have in the game.

“I keep telling people that I’m not criticising Keshi and I don’t have anything against him, but I was just telling him the truth and he refused to listen and at the end of the day, where are we now?

“It’s sad that the African champions will not be at the Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea next year. It’s sad I tell you, it’s sad,” he said regretfully.

The former Roda JC of Holland midfielder has been one of Keshi’s fiercest critics and it was no surprise that the ‘Big Boss’ kicked against having the former Nigeria international as the Super Eagles team coordinator when he was named by Amaju Pinnick.

‘Adoke didn’t instruct me to withdraw case against Lawal, others’

Lagos Lawyer Mr. Wahab Shittu explains the circumstances leading to the withdrawal of the case against a former minister and 11 others. His words:

Since the instruction to withdraw the matter against former Minister of Works, Hassan Lawal and 11 others from court was communicated to me and implemented, I have been inundated with the enquiries from several quarters, including the media, on the exact role of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN,CFR. The persistent of such requests and the gross misrepresentations published in the media in that respect forced me to write this rejoinder for the records.

Ordinarily, I would not have joined issues because having carried out a professional instruction, my job was completed. However, as an officer in the temple of justice, I owe it a duty to clear the air on certain misrepresentations on the purported role of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN,CFR in the matter. Let me make it clear beyond any shadow of doubt that there is no time did I receive any instruction from Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke SAN CFR to discontinue the case. Indeed, I was briefed to handle the case by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under the then leadership of the Executive Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri. The Instruction for me to discontinue the case was given by Mr. Chile Okoroma, Director of Legal Services of the Commission who conveyed the decision of EFCC to that effect.

I do not think it is necessary for me to attach the said letter of instruction to discontinue as communication therein is privilege, which is the reason I did not tender the letter in the proceeding in the court before the matter was withdrawn. I must make the point that as a law officer, I know it is within the discretion of EFCC to prosecute and not to prosecute any matter. I therefore have no further comment on the discretion exercised by the EFCC in discontinued further proceeding in this matter.

I must state unequivocally that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN,CFR neither gave the instruction to withdraw the proceeding nor interacted with me in any manner concerning this case. Consequently, any purported comments which sought to impugn the integrity of Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN CFR on the matter will not only be uncharitable but also unfair.

I made these comments not holding brief for Mr. Adoke SAN, he is competent to defend himself but to put issues in the proper perspective for the records.

    Lawal faults Keshi’s selection policy

Former Nigerian International has joined the train of criticism against Super Eagles Manager, Stephen Keshi, over his selection of players. John Oweri also called on the Big Boss to try other players.

Speaking with Brilla fm, former Roda JC of Holland and former Super Eagles midfielder, Garba Lawal said “It is obvious that we need fresh players in the team because whatever the coach is doing is not going right at the moment”.

He added “I believe things are not going well at this moment, as a coach you need to change, if you keep on insisting for how long will we be watching?” He asked.

Lawal claims it would be difficult to qualify for Morroco 2015, if we are still building a team at this stage, in His words: “I can’t just understand up till now we are still building our team, every time we building we don’t have a team yet”.

The Ex-International is the latest Nigerian to openly criticize Keshi.

Controversy over corps member’s death in Kano

THE real cause of the death of 26-year-old Abbas Lawal, a youth corps member serving in Kano State, may continue to be shrouded in controversy for some time to come.

While the general belief among his friends and colleagues is that Abbas lost his life to dreaded cholera, a representative of NYSC in the state maintained that the young man died during a brief but undisclosed illness.

Abbas’ untimely death on February 13 marked the end of a long time dream and aspiration for a better future.

According to sources, Abbas was rushed to the hospital by his friends after he excreted and vomited non-stop for a long time. But it was too late, as he later died at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Kano despite a strong battle by doctors to save his life.

It will be recalled that The Nation had earlier reported that cases of cholera were on the rise in Kano.

Abbas, an indigene of Kaduna, studied Computer Science at the Federal University of Technology, Minna. He was until his death observing his primary assignment at Government Girls’ College, Kano, where he served as the only computer instructor.

According to his close friends, Abbas was hale and hearty a day before his death, and betrayed no sign that death might be lurking in the corner. But all that changed in the night when he allegedly complained of stomach ache.

Sensing trouble, the friends rushed him to the hospital where doctors allegedly diagnosed cholera as the cause of his illness.

“It was a surprise to all of us in the lodge. Although Abbas complained that he was not feeling fine that morning, but it did not look like anything serious. We all played and took photographs before we departed for the Federal Secretariat for the passing out ceremony. He told me that he had visited the toilet for more than seven times before day broke,” Mathias David, one of his roommates, said.

He lamented that nurses at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, a government-owned hospital, gave Abbas the sugar and salt solution after he was rushed there at about 12.15pm.

“We rushed Abbas to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital after he complained of stomach ache. But there was no doctor to attend to him, so the nurses only gave him the sugar and salt solution. He was later transferred to the IDH where he died in the evening,” David stated.

The Nation further gathered that Abbas’ corpse was taken to Kaduna the same night he died as demanded by the father in company of two NYSC staff and six corps members.

However, while most of his colleagues are blaming cholera for his death, the management of the National Youth Service Corps NYSC in Kano is insisting that Abbas Lawal died during a brief illness.

When contacted, NYSC Coordinator in Kano State, Mr. Abdulrasheed Sanusi, told journalists that Abbas Lawal was one of the 37 corps members serving at Government Girls’ College.

He said Abbas Lawal did not die of cholera or any infectious disease, noting that the deceased died of natural cause after a brief illness.

When asked about the details of the medical report received from the hospital, the coordinator said he had not collected any report from the hospital.

“The corps member in question was sick and taken to the hospital. The time was around noon on Thursday. Unfortunately, he died in the evening of the same day.

“We don’t know the cause of death yet because we have not collected the medical report. However, we have informed the parents of his death, and his remains were taken to Kaduna as requested by the father.

“The truth is that we could not collect the medical report because of the very busy activities of the day. And don’t forget that we cannot afford not to inform the parents of the death.”

However, Abbas’ father, Malam Abbas Abubakar, said: “I have left everything to God. I was told my son died on Thursday evening and I asked them to bring his corpse to Kaduna that same night. The NYSC told me that he died of cholera. I believe it is time, and I have left everything to God,” Mallam Abubakar said.

Also speaking, a very senior medical officer at the IDH, Kano, confirmed to The Nation that Abbas Lawal suffered from acute diarrhea and vomiting, which he said were symptoms of cholera.

Before the unfortunate incident, Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, had stressed the need for the people to be extra-vigilant against the dreaded disease in the state.

While giving the warning, which came against the backdrop of the outbreak of cholera in neighbouring states, Yusuf said that the government is doing its best to ensure the safety of its citizenry by providing potable water and regular sanitary activities in the state.

Lawal has ‘no doubts’ Eagles will win

Former Nigeria midfielder Garba Lawal says he has ‘no doubts’ that the Super Eagles will win against Malawi today, as long as they are focused.

Nigeria need a result to reach the World Cup qualifying play-offs, but Lawal told KickOffNigeria.com that the team must play for the win.

“I know the players are well prepared and fit enough to play, so I don’t have any doubts on the Super Eagles that they will win,” Lawal said.

  • Lawal, Akpoborie tip Eagles for quarter finals

FORMER stars have backed Nigeria to beat Ethiopia on Tuesday to reach the last eight of the AFCON after they dropped points against Zambia, reports MTNFootball.com

The Super Eagles are now on two points from as many matches after they were held to another 11 draw by defending champions Zambia on Friday in Nelspruit.

Ex-international Garba Lawal said that the Eagles are capable of advancing to the knockout stage but must still be at their best against bottom team Ethiopia.

“The Eagles still have chance to qualify for the quarterfinal, but they must beat Ethiopia to go through and it is not going to be easy. It’s a must-win for the Eagles,” said Lawal.

“Ethiopia will come to fight and so the Eagles must be at their best to beat them.”

However, ‘Chindo’, who is on the NFF technical committee, said Coach Stephen Keshi would have to explain why he chose to play 4-3-3 and leave out wing play.

“Keshi chose the players for the competition, so he will have to explain what happen to the wing play and why he resorted to a 4-3-3 formation. Apart from formation the team is not playing as a team,” he said.

Lawal predicts Nigeria, Ghana AFCON final

Super Eagles midfielder, Raheem Lawal has predicted the Super Eagles will clash with perennial rivals Ghana in the final of next year’s African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The former Atletico Beleares of Spain midfielder said Ghana has a team good enough to reach the final, so too Nigeria, who he will tip to go on and win the continental trophy.

“I see Nigeria and Ghana playing in the final of the Nations Cup in South Africa. Not that the other teams who will feature in the competition are not good, but both Ghana and Nigeria have an edge with us best to win it,” Lawal told MTNFootball.com

“I am also looking forward to play at the Nations Cup for the first time.

“I was so happy when we qualified and I will do my best to be in South Africa with the Eagles and contribute to the team’s success.”

Raheem Lawal said defending champions Zambia will be Nigeria’s biggest threat in the first round of the tournament.

“Zambia as the defending champions will be our main threat. The last year’s squad is still very much intact,” he said.

“We therefore have to beware of them and take them seriously even though we cannot afford to look down on Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.”

The former Olympic international also told MTNFootball.com he was shocked Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi did not make the top five players to battle for the Africa Footballer of the Year Award.

“I was surprised when I saw the list. I don’t understand how CAF reached that conclusion because Mikel won the English FA Cup as well as the UEFA Champions League not as a bench warmer, but as a super regular. I think CAF need to tell us how they picked the final nominees,” he argued.

    Lawal thrilled by Eagles recall

ADANA Demirspor midfielder Raheem Lawal has said he is excited to be recalled by Nigeria for next month’s friendly against Venezeula.

Lawal last played for Nigeria in June against Rwanda at home and has since been left out of the national team as coach Stephen Keshi insisted he sort out his club future before he would be reconsidered.

He has now settled down at Turkish second division team Adana Demirspor after he quit Spanish club Atletico Baleares before his contract there had ran out. The former U-20 and Olympic team star told MTNFootball.com he has received a call to be part of the Eagles to take on Venezuela in Miami, United States of America, on November 14. “I am happy that I am back in Eagles. I have been informed about this and I thank God for it,” he said. “I will continue from where I stopped with the team. I am really excited and I thank God.” Lawal has been in superb form for his Turkish lig 1 side since his debut earlier this month and even scored a rocket of a goal last weekend.
