  • Reconstruction of 140 roads: Obaseki mobilises contractors to sites

EDO State Governor Godwin Obaseki has increased roads to be rehabilitated in the state to over 140.

Contractors have been mobilising men and equipment to new locations to continue reconstruction.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy Mr. Crusoe Osagie said new areas where contractors were carrying out reconstruction included Jemila Street, Ohovbe Road and Lawani Junction, by Urubi Street, Benin City.

Osagie listed other roads as Yoruba Street (drain rehabilitation); Sokponba Road; Aburime Street, off New Lagos, and Delta Crescent, off Ikpokpan.

He added: “The state government is clear with its instructions to contractors on how the reconstruction is expected to be delivered in line with the report of roads audit recently.

“We will not take any chances in ensuring that roads in deplorable condition are fixed during the dry season. We have over 140 roads where reconstruction work is being carried out.”

He added that reconstruction on Boundary Road and Commercial Avenue as well as Ogbelaka/Evborhan, Yoruba Street and Dumez Road, Ugbor-Amagba Road, was on course.

“At Edo Central, reconstruction has reached appreciable stage in Mousco-Ukpenu Road, Ekpoma; Irrua-Uromi Road; Secretarial Road, Igueben; Union Bank Road, Igueben and Uwenlebo Road, Ekpoma, among others.”

The reconstruction is coming in the wake of an audit of roads a few months ago, with which the government assessed the level of deterioration of roads.

  • Nigeria’ll rise again, says ex-Deputy Governor Lawani

Nigeria’ll rise again, says ex-Deputy Governor Lawani

Former Deputy Governor of Benue State Chief Stephen Lawani has congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 56th Independence anniversary, describing it as a major milestone.

Lawani, who spoke in Abuja, said the harsh economic situation notwithstanding, freedom calls for celebration and reflection.

“I think we must congratulate ourselves for Nigeria’s survival despite challenges from the dawn of Independence to this day. I know it could have been better but we must also thank God that Nigerians are still together in one country, working for a common goal.  “Therefore a day like this brings hope and reminds us of our tortuous journey to nationhood. It is imperative for us to reminisce today on the heroic and patriotic pre-Independence struggles of our founding fathers, the Civil War, the oil boom, the missed opportunities and the economic challenges facing us.

“But our people must not despair even in the midst of  the myriad of challenges because we have what it takes to be great. Nigeria is hugely blessed in human and material resources and we are too important to fail.

“If one of every five black persons in the world is a Nigerian, then we cannot afford not to succeed. We must re-invent ourselves for future generations, for our brothers and sisters within the African continent and even for all black people in the Diaspora. This is what this generation owes the entire Africans and other people of colour all over the world and I am confident that it will be achieved in no distant time”.

Lawani berates Melaye for attack on Senator Tinubu

The Executive Director of Women for Development and Leadership Mrs. Ayoka Lawani has condemned the attack of Senator Dino Melaye on Senator Remi Tinubu.

Such incident, she said, is capable of intimidating women and discouraging them from political participation.

Describing Melaye’s action as utterly despicable, Lawani, in a statement yesterday, said: “Such behavior discourages women from participating in politics and accounts for the dearth of women in our public life.”

She stated that Senator Tinubu, having known her for several years, is capable of holding her own in the face of harassment from intimidating men.
