  • Court hears suit against Ogun lawmaker June 6

Some members of the Remo North state constituency in Ogun State have sued a House of Assembly member, Adebiyi Adeleye at the Federal High Court in Abeokuta, for allegedly presenting a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of last April 11 election.

Wasiu Gbadebo and Onamuyiwa Olumuyiwa filed the suit for themselves and on behalf of “concerned members” of the constituency. INEC is the first defendant.

The plaintiffs, through their lawyer Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), is praying the court to determine whether Adeleye, by virtue of Section 107(1)(i) and 109(1) (b) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 118(1)(k) of the Electoral Act, 2010, is a fit and proper person to represent Remo North Constituency.

They urged the court to hold that the lawmaker allegedly presented a false School Leaving Certificate to INEC as contained in Form CF- 001 (Personal Particulars of Candidate).

They said he also gave false information to INEC on oath by swearing that he was born on July 16, 1974, contrary to his true date of birth, which is December 17, 1974.

The plaintiffs also accused him of presenting a questionable Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Fisheries Technology as an Arts student, with only one credit in his West African Examination Council (WAEC) result.

This, they said, fell short of the requirements into a science oriented school such as Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, New Bussa, Niger State, and is contrary to Section 107(1) of the Constitution and other extant laws.

They prayed the court to determine whether, by virtue of the overwhelming evidence against the second defendant, the court can make an order declaring his seat vacant and a fresh election conducted by INEC.

It was learnt that Adeleye is yet to respond to the suit filed on April 12

The case was adjourned till June 6.

  • Lawmaker backs Kachikwu to succeed

A MEMBER of the Imo State House of Assembly representing Oguta constituency   Hon Henry Ezediaro has urged Nigerians to support the ongoing reform in the petroleum industry to end the perennial fuel scarcity in the country.

Ezediaro who also chairs the House Committee on Petroleum and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), made the call during an interactive session with journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital, expressing  optimism that the current policies introduced by the Petroleum Minister, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, will rid the industry of the powerful cartel that has held it to ransom for years.

He noted that though Nigerians are currently bearing the burden of the high price of petroleum products, especially Premium Motor Spirit, the development in the industry will guarantee permanent solution to the problem of fuel scarcity.

He said, “The cartel are fighting very hard to sabotage the efforts of the Petroleum Minister and the APC government but all well-meaning Nigerians are aware of their antics. It is therefore my passionate appeal to Nigerians to show understanding and patience because I have implicit trust in the ability of Kachikwu to turn the industry around.”

Speaking further, he said, “Those calling for the minister to resign maybe probably sponsored by the same cartel eating fat from the age-long fraud in the petroleum industry but I am optimistic that the industry will bounce back and our refineries will begin to work again. Some of those criticising the Minister of Petroleum today are the same people that are sabotaging the refineries so that they continue to import petroleum products from where they are milking the country dry. So we should be patient with the minister and support the ongoing reforms in the industry.

“Another thing that Nigerians should also know is that President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to seeing the problem of fuel scarcity resolved as quickly as possible to save Nigerians from the prevailing hardship but things must be done differently to get the desired result. All we need is to support and be patient with the APC government. Now the refineries have suddenly started working and it is a thing to rejoice over because very soon the issue of fuel scarcity will be a thing of the past.”

  • Lawmaker advocates capital punishment for looters

Deputy Whip of the Lagos state House of Assembly, Hon. Omotayo Oduntan has said the death sentence for kidnappers should also be extended to public office holders who embezzled money to serve as a deterrent to others

Oduntan made the call during a chat with Assembly correspondents in a programmed tagged, ‘Time out with the press’ organised by correspondents for lawmakers in the House at the Assembly complex Thursday.

According to her, if capital punishment is introduced for public officers who dip their fingers in the national till it will reduce embezzlement.

The lawmaker who represents Alimosho 2 also advised that such public officials who embezzled the type of humongous sums of money that is being reeled out on a daily basis by newspapers needs to be taken to psychiatrist hospital to have their brains examined to see if they are normal.

She said, accumulation of such huge sum of money and property that will last up to their fifth generation would only make their children wayward and unserious “because they have so much money to play around with and at the end of the day the children end up not being useful to themselves, their parents, anybody and the society at large.”

On death sentence for kidnappers, she said she is in support of the death sentence as prescribed by the National Assembly members.

She however advised the Federal Government to provide more jobs for Nigerians as joblessness is partly responsible for the increase in cases of kidnapping.

“Joblessness is partly responsible for the spate of kidnapping; by the time somebody graduates from school and stays at home jobless for three to ten years, they take to kidnapping to survive.

“If more jobs are provided kidnapping will be on the decrease, because joblessness is part of the reason why people take to kidnapping after waiting for three to ten years without job, they resort to kidnapping,” she said.

Buhari needs time to deliver – Lawmaker

The member representing Epe Constituency II in the Lagos state House of Assembly, Hon. Segun Olulade, has urged Nigerians to allow more time for President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver on his campaign promises while also supporting his administration in its efforts to reposition the country.

He said that the administration inherited myriads of problems, urging Nigerians to be patient and align with the change mantra. According to him “President Buhari needs more time to actualise his change agenda. Nigerians should give him their support and prayers and know that in no distance period, the desired change being advocated by the present government would manifest.

“It is clear that every Nigeria wants this change to happen as soon as possible, but we must know that change itself takes gradual steps; it doesn’t happen overnight. I am very optimistic that this expected change is bound to bring out some pleasant surprises.

“Many are complaining that the President is travelling a lot but we should not take the constant travelling by President Buhari as a waste of the country’s resources. I believe that the President is only interested in bringing political dividends to Nigerians.

“The recent visit of the President to China is another milestone towards building a strong alliance that will bring development to Nigeria. Good things are coming to Nigeria. I believe that the current situation is temporary. I believe our President is doing everything possible to bring the suffering of our people to an end,” Olulade added.

He however, advised Nigerians irrespective of religious and political affiliation to pray for God’s intervention in the nation’s socio-economic and political activities, noting that seeking divine intervention would enable the federal government overcome the challenges facing the country.

  • Honour for Lagos lawmaker

Apostles of Peace Society, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Isolo, has given a Peace Award to the Deputy Chief Whip of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Omotayo Odutan. She is hence admitted into the League of Awardees of the church.

The initiator and National President of the society, Siyanbola Oladapo described Odutan, who is the 2016 recipient of the award as a friendly, free-minded and peace-loving woman who, according to him, is a sister and friend to the church. He added that the Deputy Chief Whip beat six other equally important and very influential nominees to bag this year’s award.

“By this award ma, even as you continue to champion the cause of peace, God shall look mercifully upon you and promote you beyond your expectation such that you shall also serve the nation at the federal level,” he said.

In his address delivered during the 18th Anniversary Dinner in Lagos, Oladapo said the apostles of peace was a society that champions the course of peace both at homes, the nation and the world in general.

He said the society was made up of philanthropic professionals.

He noted that Nigeria and the world at large needed peace at this moment of turbulence, religious intolerance, insurgency, ISIS devilish penetration and dominance, terrorism, Boko Haram nuances, unemployment-induced crimes, religious organisations being influenced by the worldly things instead of things of the spirit, economic catastrophe and other phenomena that point to the emergence of anti-Christ.

According to him, the society has not folded its hands, adding that apart from spiritual efforts; the national body had set up a committee to organise a peace lecture that would feature a leading Muslim organisation founder and another influential Christian cleric where we shall attempt to proffer solutions to religious intolerance and encourage harmonious living among people of this nation and the world.

“The Hausa of Mile 12, the Ijaws, the road transport union, politicians, civil organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), religious leaders and student union leaders, among others, shall air their views at the event. Everyone should support the initiative which would come up soon,” he said.

He said the society was committed to facilitating conflict resolution and it’s guided by what he described as the church’s five way test; which include: will it glory God, is it Christ like, will it bring peace to the body of Christ, will it contribute to the growth of the church and will it bring peace to the body of Christ?

He said the church undertakes programmes that would cater for the well-being of all retired men of God, ensures food bank for the less-privileged people on monthly basis, life-touching projects for communities, including water.

Others were medical screening and treatment, peace grant/scholarship to indigent but poor students, tracts and sponsorship of religious pragrammes, care for the elderly, economic empowerment, worship sanctuary projects, peace club; deliberate stabilising initiatives in churches where we have chapters, youth development and write-ups on conflict resolution.

Responding, Hon. Odutan said she would appreciate award that would bring about the enhancement of God’s work, adding that every award had its significance.

“I don’t receive award anyhow, but I always appreciate any award that would bring about the enhancement of God’s work. I have been coming for their anniversaries though quietly. Out of the six of us nominated, I emerged the winner. The award is a very significant one, and I really appreciate it,” she said.

“It gives me joy to give to people and enhance their well-being. Each and every one of us has a role to play too. My own role is to help people and identify with the church it her philanthropic projects,” she said.

She said she would want to be remembered as somebody that put smiles on the faces of so many people. It is not how many houses you built but when you contribute to the well-being of fellow humankind, the legacy you leave behind lives after you.

She challenged other women who are interested to join politics, adding that they would be mentored.

“Women must first of all evaluate themselves to know if they can do it, do I want to do it and am I capable of doing it?” she said.
