The events began with members of the Governing Council led by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Tunji Ibiyemi, visiting the School of the Blind in Owo to donate their widows’ mite to the less privileged.

  • Improved power supply excites lawmaker

The Senator representing Enugu-East senatorial zone, Gilbert Nnaji has expressed optimism that the perennial problem of epileptic power supply in the country would soon be over.

He spoke to reporters in Enugu, saying the improved power supply in the area would positively impact on businesses in the zone.

“For us in the Southeast, power is a major issue; what it involves is so much, PDP government privatised the sector and that is why we are witnessing uninterrupted power supply today in some parts of the country especially in Enugu and the adjoining states.

“Former President Jonathan started very well, though he didn’t achieve what he intended to achieve…For two weeks now I’ve been in Enugu since we went on recess but I can tell you that power has been stable. I want to commend EEDC and its chairman for what they have done.  I’ve called him to commend him for what they have done, the way they’ve transformed power supply and distribution in the Southeast zone.

“Unlike in Abuja, especially at Apo Legislative Quarters where we live,  you don’t see power for 24 hours, here in Enugu,  it’s different.  Power doesn’t stay in Abuja for 5 minutes. EEDC has done very well. If you have trasformer problem, they easily replace it. There is this portable transformer they have even introduced. They usually mount them on poles, making it impossible to be vandalised and it’s so helpful,” he said.

The lawmaker further noted that former President Jonathan had good intentions for the country, lamenting, however, that the past administration was seriously sabotaged by unseen forces. He therefore advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be mindful of the people that flock around him in order not to repeat the same mistakes made by the last administration.

“Jonathan was seriously sabotaged in so many aspects; both in power, petroleum and even in the election. PDP sabotaged themselves, we lost the election as a result of that. President Buhari is an action man, he’s a no-nonsense man and we believe that he will change things for the better, very straightforward,  Nigerians have to give him time and support in order to effect the much needed change,” he said.

According to her, “I will forever remain loyal to you, I will not defect and I will remain loyal to the PDP.”

“PDP is taking over Edo we go into governorship election next year. Edo is tired of APC. They need a change. It will be PDP all the way.

“Every promise I made will be sustained. It is about supporting your dreams, aspiration, desires and I will live up to every expectation. I will do more than I promise to do.

“I am here to say a big thank you. I know a lot has transpired in Abuja and having been watching the strides I am making on your behalf. I will be a chairman of one of the committees soon to be inaugurated. Every promise I made will be sustained. It is about supporting your dreams, aspiration, desires and I will live up to every expectation. I will do more than I promise to do.

“I never make promises I can never keep. I don’t want to make up things. Our youths will be gainfully employed. Women will be empowered.

  • We’ll bring our lawmaker back together, says Oyegun

We’ll bring our lawmaker back together, says Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said yesterday that the governing party will bring its federal lawmakers together.

The lawmakers are feuding following the election of the principal officers.

The members defied the party to pick the Senate President and House of Representatives speaker.

“Let me assure the public that peace is on the way. We had a problem in the family, no doubt about that, but we are moving quickly to resolve it. As you can see, we are working hard to see that the leaders and rank and file don’t start throwing punches”.

The APC National Chairman said the immediate concern of the party was how to quickly unify its members in both chambers if the National Assembly, saying “All the party has decided to do is to re-unify as quickly as possible our members in both chambers of the National Assembly under the existing realities. That is the first priority. Every other thing will follow. All other thing will have to wait.

“For instance, if the president says he wants to present his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate, we don’t want a situation whereby the senate will be divided. So, we are trying to sort that out; it is our number one priority. We are happy that we are arriving at an amicable settlement of the situation; this one cannot wait for long. It has to be immediately.

“There was no doubt that when you have problems, your opponent will seize the opportunity to rise up. What is important is how quickly we put our acts together and get all these behind us and move forward strongly. Some of these setbacks, no doubt, will give the other side the opportunity to laugh, but it is temporal and usual wherever you have human beings”

  • Why we elected first-timer as Cross River Speaker, by lawmaker

Fresh facts have emerged on why a first-time lawmaker, Aniekan Ukoh, was elected Speaker of the sixth House of Assembly of Akwa Ibom State.

Ukoh’s emergence has been generating negative reactions after the Assembly failed to agree on two other lawmakers with requisite experience for the position.

But one of them, Imeh Okon, has said the emergence of Ukoh, who represents Ibesikpo Asutan, was for political exigencies.

Okon said: “Myself and another person were interested in being the Speaker. But at the end of the day, someone, who wasn’t in the picture, was picked as the Speaker. That’s because of the exigencies of the time. We were all satisfied.

“The important thing is that we want the Assembly to be stable; we wanted a House that will serve the people, not necessarily who the Speaker or his deputy is.

“Order 6, Rule 2 (1) of the Standing Order of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly provides that preference shall be given to members with cognitive legislative experience. It is a parliamentarian convention all over the world because, for one to perform effectively, he must have experience.

“But then, there was a clamour for Uyo Federal Constituency that, even though the speakership was zoned to Uyo Senatorial District, that within Uyo Senatorial District, you have some federal other state constituencies.

“There was a clamour for sub-zoning, like Itu Federal Constituency has a serving senator and Etinan Federal Constituency has a party chairman. But there was nothing for Uyo Federal Constituency.

“There was the clamour that what was left for Uyo Senatorial District should be given to Uyo Federal Constituency. So, we had to agree so that we could move forward.”

The lawmaker also disagreed with the insinuations that the new Speaker lacks the capacity and experience to lead the Assembly.

Okon noted that since Ukoh had served as a lawmaker at the local government level, he had acquired enough legislative experience to succeed as Speaker.

He assured that the older members of the Assembly would support him to ensure that the House remains focused and independent.

On the allegation that former Governor Godswill Akpabio bribed some lawmakers to elect Ukoh, Okon said the insinuation was laughable.

Lawmaker hails signing of Tobacco control bill

The signing into law of the Tobacco Control Bill 2015 has been hailed by the Sponsor of the bill and House of Representatives member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Hon. Dayo Bush-Alebiosu. Bush-Alebiosu, while speaking with newsmen in Lagos as Nigeria joins the rest of the World to mark the 2015 ‘World No Tobacco Day’ said the last minute signing of the National Tobacco Control Bill into law will ensure effective regulation and control of production, manufacture, sale, labeling, advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco and tobacco products in Nigeria.

The harmonized bill, which was sponsored in the House of Representatives by Bush-Alebiosu and in the Senate by Dr. Patrick Okowa, who is now the Delta State Governor, will also ensure balance between economic consideration and health implications of tobacco manufacture, use and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, among other things.

Hon. Dayo Bush-Alebiosu who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Treaties and Agreements, said that the rates of smoking will drop and the health sector will spend money allocated to them on building its sector instead of using it for treatment of patients with tobacco-related cases.

He remarked that the law also includes ban on sales of cigarette to the underage that are the target of the tobacco industries as many children in Nigeria are affected as a result of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) and are dying of Pneumonia and respiratory childhood infections.

  • Lawmaker raises alarm on concoction

The senator representing Ondo South, Senator Boluwaji Kunlere, yesterday raised the alarm that some individuals were peddling dangerous mixtures and concoctions, which they claim could cure the  strange desease.

Kunlere urged stakeholders, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), to carry out an enlightenment in the coastal communities to prevent more deaths.

He said there was no doubt that the consumption of the concoction could led to more deaths.

“The strange deaths at Ode-Irele town is highly unfortunate.

“We are still getting conflicting signals. Some are attributing it to mysterious spirits, some to ethanol, and some to exhumation of a body.

“What is of concern to us now is that some people are mixing local gin with some soapy substances.

“It is dangerous when people mix concoction and described it as a magic elixir to take care of certain ailments (Oogun ategun).”
