Youths to military: act on lawmaker’s tip

Youths of Dapchi, the Yobe State village where 110 schoolgirls were abducted on February 19, have called on the authorities to act on tips given by groups and individuals on the whereabouts of the girls.

Last Thursday, a member of the House of Representatives, Goni Bukar (representing Bursari/Yunusari/Gaidam Federal Constituency), told The Nation that “the girls are still within Yobe State. We have an idea that they are in Bulabulin in Yunusari Local Government .  The military is aware that Boko Haram has been in that place for over four years.” The lawmaker offered to lead the military to the place if given the opportunity.

The Dapchi Youth Development Association (DAYDA), in a statement yesterday after a meeting of stakeholders in Dapchi, insisted that only 107 girls and not 110 as announced by the government were abducted”.

They also urged the Yobe State Government to decide the fate of the 800 girls that escaped the attack at the Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC) and escaped abduction.

”Despite the incident, they are still entitled to their right to education”, the forum said.

The communiqué of the meeting signed by the Chairman of the forum, Alhaji Bashir Manzo and Secretary General  of DAYDA, Alhaji  Baba Shehu, said:

”We declare total support for ongoing efforts by the government to rescue our abducted daughters, but would only be convinced by her commitment when the girls are rescued in earnest and alive.

“From our records, which we gathered from individual parents and made available to government and other stakeholders, the abducted GGSTC Dapchi girls are 107 as against 110 publicised in the media.

“We condemn in  totality the selective engagement by government’s constituted committees and representatives with parents of the abducted school girls, whereby only those considered to be stooges to some political leaders were consulted while neglecting the leadership of the forum of abducted Dapchi school girls that has the support  and confidence of its membership. We want inclusiveness, if government must earn our confidence.

“We hereby urge all our political leaders and technocrats across the globe to use whatever influence they have to support and compel governments at all levels to intensify her rescue efforts, as there is no time the community requires their support and services better than now.

“Government should consult with those who claim to have heard from the abductors or known the whereabouts of our children and mobilise whatever resources that are required to rescue our daughters alive.

“Youths and other community stakeholders are determined to resist from whatever quarters any attempt to politicise the incident.

“We describe as lack of commitment, ineptitude and breach of our fundamental human right of freedom for peaceful assembly and association the denial of clearance sought by some civil society groups in Yobe State who have declared their intention to show their solidarity to us through peaceful demonstrations and street walks. This ridicules our collective conscience and the Nigerian constitution

“The general public and government officials should desist from derogatory comments and statements capable of further traumatising the affected families and sabotage the ongoing rescue efforts.

“While the rescue efforts may be ongoing, we urge Yobe State Government to decide in earnest the fate of the over 800 schools girls  who escaped and returned home following the closure of the school, as they are still entitled to their right to education.”

  • Over 1000 benefit from Lawmaker’s health care plans

Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, the Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly and member representing Ikorodu constituency 1, has facilitated a one-year health care plan for over 1000 constituents with varying health challenges. The ongoing heath project, according to the legislator, is one of the numerous ways through which he hopes to reciprocate the good gesture of his supportive constituents.

The project, organised in conjunction with a frontline health management company, Clearline, aside from meeting some immediate health needs of the beneficiaries like free blood pressure (BP), sugar level and malaria tests as well as treatments, also affords them to choose one of the five selected hospitals in Ikorodu division, from where they would be receiving free medical treatments on Hon. Agunbiade’s bill for the next one year.

The hospitals are Newgate Hospital, Holyfill Hospital, The Excellence Hospital, Bronila Medical Hopsital and Dasochris Hospital, all in Ikorodu area of Lagos State. Agunbiade added that the project became necessary following growing need to constantly assist residents of the constituency to access quality medical attention. “Many of our people cannot afford the medical attention they dearly require. That is one reason why we are doing this,” he explained.

The health care outreach which held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Ikorodu, His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, was flagged-off by the monarch and his wife, Olori Kudirat Shotobi, ably supported by numerous other dignitaries from within and outside the division. Oba Shotobi, while describing the initiative as a landmark in the division, urged residents to take advantage of it and continue to support the lawmaker at all time.

Lawmaker urges youths to shun crime

The lawmaker representing Apapa Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Mr. Ayodeji Joseph, has urged youths to shun crime.

He stressed the importance of skill acquisition, saying it the panacea for unemployment.

Joseph, who spoke at the weekend at the 1st Youth Summit organised by the Deputy Leader of Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Legislative Council, Emmanuel Oputa, in Marine Beach, Lagos, said youths as today’s leaders should engage in productive and legitimate activities.

Oputa, who is also the councillor representing Ward ‘F’, said: “Today’s event tagged: ‘Youth Know Yourself’, is part of my efforts in contributing to the growth and development of the society by investing in our youths.

“Youths are the pillars of any nation. A country that fails to invest in its youths either through academics, or skill acquisition, or preparation for leadership role, cannot be great.”

Lawmaker to opposition: forget about Lagos in 2019

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency II, Fatai Oluwa, has advised the opposition in the state to perish their dream of taking over in 2019.

Oluwa said he was giving the advice because there is no vacancy in any of the elective offices in the state for the opposition.

The lawmaker was reacting to a statement credited to the Action Democratic Party (ADP), which said it was poised to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The ADP had described itself as the most credible alternative to the APC and even promised to make judicious use of the resources accruable to the state.

Oluwa wondered why ADP members pretended not to see the massive development across the state.

He said: “Only a person who does not reside in Lagos would say such a thing. Lagos remains a perfect example to other states in growth and development.

“I must proudly tell you that Lagos did not borrow in 2017 to fund projects. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode confirmed this when he presented the 2018 budget before the House of Assembly.”

“Yet, did you see the massive progress the state recorded in terms of infrastructure? Have you gone through the roads, the bridges, the health facilities?

“Are you aware Governor Ambode has been able to shore up the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state?

“And now that the man has made a lot of efforts, one small party from nowhere would dream of coming to squander the progress of the state. It is not possible.”
