    • Dep governor eyes Diri’s seat on ADC platform

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and Senator Seriake Dickson are on their way out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it was learnt yesterday.

The pending exit of former Governor Dickson and his political godson Ewhrudjakpo is due to uncertainty in the leadership of the opposition party, it was also learnt.

While Dickson has been very antagonistic to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Senate, Ewhrudjakpo declined to follow his principal Governor Duoye Diri, who defected to the APC on November 3.

Both men are believed to have opened talks with African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their next platform for Dickson to return to Senate and Ewhrudjakpo to contest for governor.

As Dickson was rounding off his second term, he had sponsored Ewhrudjakpo for Senate. Later, he influenced his selection as Diri’s running mate. After his election as deputy governor, he later vacated the Senate, thereby creating a vacancy which Dickson filled after a by-election.

Although Dickson had advised Diri against defection, he rejected the advice.

The deputy governor has sought a court order to prevent the Assembly from impeaching him over his refusal to join the APC.

The case is pending before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Addressing the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Yenagoa, Diri cleared the air on the impeachment saga, saying that he would not compel Ewhrudjakpo to join the APC.

The governor promised to engage with the deputy governor instead of resorting into  confrontation.

On the speculation of Dickson and Ewhrudjakpo planning defection, a source in the Governor’s office said there is an iota of truth in that.

He said the speculation is rife because Dickson has some links with the ADC, adding that he had allegedly influenced appointments of some politicians in the state.

The source, who did not want his name mentioned because of the sensitivity of the issue, said: ‘There is an atom of truth in the speculation that Ewhrudjakpo may join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This is because his principal, Senator Seriake Dickson, former governor of Bayelsa, has some links with the ADC.

“It is alleged that Dickson recommended some former chieftains of the PDP, including a former council chairman, to become ADC executive members.”

The source said he had no reason to doubt that Dickson would join the ADC along with his alter ego, the deputy governor, who was Works Commissioner during his tenure as governor.

He, however, said the ADC cannot  win one local government area in the state because it has not been accepted.

An associate of Diri said: “Well, every politician would like to move forward and they must stand on a platform.

“But the way the PDP is going, the man will eventually leave the party. I believe he may likely join the governor in the APC. For me, ADC is not an option. As a politician who works with the governor, anybody going to the ADC is on his own.”

However, he said Dickson could go to the ADC because the hope of going for third term as senator in the PDP is dicey.

The source, who also craved anonymity, said: “The only option for Dickson is to either remain in the PDP or go to any other party, which is likely to be the ADC.

“And of course, you know Dickson has the capacity to deliver himself. In his senatorial district. He has massive structure to deliver himself but he can’t determine for some of us in other districts. That is why ADC is not an option for most Bayelsa politicians.

“Still, the former governor can go there because he has what it takes to deliver himself —structures, money and connections etc.”

However, a media aide to the deputy governor, Doubara Otasi, said he was not in the know of his principal’s next line of action.

Bayelsa approves N35,000 wage awards for civil servants

The Bayelsa State Government has approved the payment of wage awards to civil servants in its ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as part of measures to cushion the effects of the hard economic realities.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made this known on Friday when the leadership of the South-South Zone of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) led by its Chairman, Comrade Bolum Martin and Vice Chairman, Comrade Julius Laye, paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Yenagoa.

A statement by the media aide to the Deputy Governor, Mr Doubara Atasi, explained that the wage award which was approved by Governor Douye Diri was in line with the Federal Government’s appeal to the states to utilize funds from oil subsidy removal to ameliorate the economic hardship facing workers.

According to the statement, Ewhrudjakpo has directed the Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs Biobelemoye Charles-Onyeama, to work out modalities for the payment of the N35,000 wage awards to all civil servants on the state government’s payroll.

Describing the civil service as the engine room for the implementation of government’s programmes and policies, the Deputy Governor promised that the present administration in Bayelsa would continue to take the welfare of civil servants seriously.

He assured the TUC of government’s support and encouragement where necessary to meet their goals and promote healthy industrial relations in the state, South-South region and the country at large.

Ewhrudjakpo, however, urged the two major labour centres in the country, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to always work together in the interest of workers and the entire citizens of the country.

He said: “The effectiveness of any government is the civil service. And so, anybody who disorganises, disregards, undermines and fails to recognise the civil service, that person is only doing so to promote his or her own intention to fail in government or governance.

“Civil servants are the people that implement the programmes and policies of the government. In fact, they run with the vision of the government. That is why we take our civil service very seriously here.

“And our civil servants are also very supportive. They have always supported us as a government. So, we don’t joke with matters affecting them. As we speak, we are not owing our workers.

“Like the wage award you mentioned, I want you to know that the governor has already approved the wage awards for civil servants in the state. Soon after this meeting, the Head of Service will get the approval and start working on it.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of TUC, South-South zone, Comrade Bolum Martin, acknowledged the labour friendly disposition of the Governor Diri-led administration, noting that Bayelsa is among the few states that had extended the payment of the 30 per cent minimum wage to local government workers.

Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo gave the commendation yesterday at the grand finale of the football competition among churches at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa.

He pointed out that the present administration in Bayelsa had since identified sports as a veritable tool to take the attention of the youths off drugs, cultism and other criminal tendencies.

While thanking the participants for their hard work and discipline, Ewhrudjakpo directed the State  Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to liaise with the organisers to improve subsequent editions of the yearly football tournament.

Ewhrudjakpo said: “I want to profusely thank the organizers of this tournament for using sports to pull out our youths from drugs, crime and cultism.

“We have since identified sports as a tool to give our youths the right focus, because a sports man,  woman would not have time for cultism, drugs and criminality. We will partner with the church to improve the quality of this tournament.

‘Prioritise development of human resources in health sector’

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the development of human resources in the health sector in its Renewed Hope Agenda.

He made the call yesterday while granting audience to a delegation from the National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria, led by its National Deputy President, Venerable Dr. Nengi Brown, at the Government House in Yenagoa.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, the deputy governor said what the country currently needs most is concerted investment in building a critical mass of health and medical practitioners to run the health system.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, while launching the Health Sector Renewal Compact on the sidelines of the Universal Health Coverage Day celebrations in Abuja, announced his administration’s  commitment to revamping the health sector by tackling infrastructure issues.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo, who represented Governor Douye Diri at the Abuja event, however, maintained that efforts to revamp the health sector by paying skewed attention to building more health infrastructure at the expense of the human capital driving the sector would achieve little or nothing.

Identifying human resources and nutrition as key components of any virile health system, he urged the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, to take care of the telling needs in implementing the National Health Act.

He said: “My advocacy to the Minister of Health and the President is that we should not take health infrastructure as a priority in the Renewed Hope Agenda for health. That shouldn’t be our focus.

“I have said many times that if we must get health right, we must go for the human resources because when the health workers are available and present in the various communities, health care will become more efficient and affordable.

“I believe we can achieve much if we build the human resources we need to run our health system with the level of health infrastructure we have on ground. Building infrastructures without the people to man them does not make any sense to me.

“I am also one of those who believe that nutrition is a key component of health that we have neglected in this country over the years. And for us to get it right, we must take nutrition seriously. You cannot give vaccine to a malnourished child.”

Thanking the association for their prayers and support to the Governor Diri-led administration, the deputy governor urged them to avoid mudslinging and strive for professionalism to carve a respectable niche for themselves.

The National Deputy President, National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria, Dr Nengi Brown, congratulated Governor Diri and his deputy on their well-deserved victory in the November 11 governorship election.

Brown appreciated Ewhrudjakpo, whom he described as one of their own, for making them proud in office and solicited his continued support to the association.
