    Stigma, discrimination, major challenges facing TB patients -Lawyers Alert

    A Human rights organization in Nigeria has identified stigma and discrimination as the major challenges faced by persons affected by Tuberculosis in Nigeria.

    A comprehensive report of findings by Lawyer Alert on Human Rights Violations Associated with Tuberculosis (TB) in Nigeria indicated that the highest recorded violation relates to stigma and discrimination, accounting for 53 percent of incidents.

    The Lawyer Alert report, arguably the first in Nigeria, offers an in-depth analysis of the human rights abuses faced by people affected by TB across the country.

    The report serves as a crucial resource for advocacy and policy-making, aiming to end stigma and discrimination and improve the quality of TB care and prevention services for Persons Affected by Tuberculosis (PATBs).

    Broken Conjugal Rights and disruption of family life account for 43 percent of human rights abuses faced by people affected by TB across the country. Violations in Medical and Health Care ranked third at 6 percent, and Wrongful Social Economic Practices had an insignificant reportage of less than one percent.

    Lawyers Alert unveils report on rights violation associated with TB

    A nonprofit organisation in Nigeria, Lawyers Alert has unveiled a report on violations of the rights of Tuberculosis patients and survivors in the country.

    During the validation of the report in Abuja, stakeholders said the report detailed the plight of victims of TB and proffered solutions to prevent stigmatisation towards ending TB in Nigeria.

    Personnel of the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli-Ulcer Control Programme (NTBLCP) and other stakeholders including persons affected by TB and survivors, members of Civil Society Organisations, and Media applauded the Lawyers Alert for the comprehensive work on the report.

    The Executive Director, Debriche Health Development Centre, Mrs Debrah Ike, and Programme Manager, NTBLCP, Lagos, Dr Sokoya Olusola Daniel in their separate remarks said the report would contribute significantly to curbing violation of rights of persons affected by TB.

    Speaking in the gender and human rights profile in TB response in Nigeria, Mom said “The human rights-based TB approach, the basis of Lawyers Alert TB interventions, recognises and upholds the fundamental rights of all people affected by TB, including the right to health, non-discrimination, and participation in decision-making.”

    “The approach is founded on the dignity and autonomy of people affected by TB and the critical role they must play in all aspects of the disease response. The violations report that has been captured used community-led monitoring, where partner groups and primary stakeholders were at the forefront of documenting the violations.”

    Lawyers Alert trains NTBLCP personnel on TB Human Rights Response

    A non-profit human rights organisation in Nigeria, Lawyers Alert, has trained personnel of National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli-Ulcer Control Programme on safeguarding rights of persons affected by Tuberculosis.

    The training held in Abuja was aimed at equipping the NTBLCP personnel with relevant information regarding TB Human Rights Based response, was supported by the Stop TB Partnership.

    The President of Lawyers Alert, Barrister Rommy Mom said the objective of the training includes deepening the skill and knowledge among the staff of NTBLCP on the nexus between the law, gender, rights and TB.

    According to him, the training was also designed to share strategies on enhancing the effectiveness of the NTBLCP Human Rights and Gender Action plan.

    Mom also said the training was meant to build synergy and collaboration with NTBLCP towards inclusive rights-based TB response in Nigeria. 

    He called government, organisations and individuals to work together to address challenges facing persons affected by TB and the TB survivors.

    Mom said this would enable TB patients to complete their treatment and live a life of dignity that guarantees and safeguards their rights.

    He added that this would help to end TB in Nigeria by 2030.
