  • Manu, Ugbade to lead Eaglets again

Manu, Ugbade to lead Eaglets again

After finishing fourth at the last CAF U-17 tournament in Niger, Golden Eaglets’ coach, Emmanuel Amuneke may not lead the team to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, SL10.ng understands.

The Nigerian U-17’s managed to secure a spot at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup, despite some lukewarm performances at the African championships, and SL10.ng understands there are palpable concerns within the top hierarchy at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) whether Amuneke is the right man to lead the country to Chile.

The Glass House issued a statement immediately after the Eaglets lost 0-1 to South Africa’s Amajimbos in the semi-final of the CAF U-17 championship, that the technical crew of the team would remain intact for the World Cup in Chile. But sl10.ng also understands that the NFF, despite issuing that statement, was unhappy that the team failed to get to the final, which killed any possibility of them winning the competition.

It is believed that the level of their disappointment was heightened when the team lost to Guinea in the losers’ final, which ended their hopes of at least being in the medal zone.

Sl10.ng had reported about plans to overhaul the team ahead of the World Cup, as eggheads at the Glass House were said to have believed the best players weren’t taken to that tournament.

But the latest twist, SL10.ng understands, is that the NFF may be considering drafting the duo of Manu Garba and Nduka Ugbade to help reenact the feat of 2013.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup holds in the months of May and June, while the U-17 World Cup doesn’t come until October, which gives about enough time for Manu and Ugbade to be drafted in.

A SL10.ng source informs that Amuneke will most likely be retained, but he will not be in charge of the team.

“I don’t think they will fire him, but he most likely will not be in charge. They are thinking towards Manu and Ugbade but nothing is decided yet,” the source said.

“The thing is, Pinnick and this board are desperate to win something and they were terribly disappointed when the Eaglets couldn’t win the U-17 championship in Niger. They believe the earlier they win something, the better for their chances of being fully accepted by Nigerians,” the source added.

It is, however, unclear, whether Manu Garba and Nduka Ugbade would be willing to return to the U17s if and when the proposition is made to them.

Adamu Hassan scores goal no 11

Kano Pillars continued their impressive run to the season with another 1-0 win over Akwa United in a Week 27 Glo Premier League on Sunday at the Kano Pillars stadium, Sabongari, Kano to remain top at the summit.

Adamu Hassan scored the only goal of the encounter in the 44th minute to take his season’s goal tally to 11.

The former Kwara United striker has been a revelation in the coach Okey Emordi-tutored side since he joined the Pyramid City side at the beginning of the season. Hassan scored the goal that gave Pillars a vital away point in the Week 26 1-1 draw against FC Taraba in Jalinjo last Wednesday.

In a chat with SportingLife after the match, the club’s media officer, Idris Malikawa said the team is now focusing on their next game against Bayelsa United in Benin on Wednesday.

Malikawa said his side will travel to Benin today ahead of Wednesday’s match.

“All eyes are on Kano Pillars now. As I told you before the match, we are focused and determined for our third title aspiration. It was a good game. Akwa United gave us a good fight but our players showed champions stuff and got the victory. Our focus now is on  the Bayelsa United match. We want to go there and get something from the match. Wepraise the players for  a job well done and thank our fans for the support,” Malikawa told SportingLife.

Michael Jamieson backed to lead Scotland to glory

Michael  Jamieson was backed on Tuesday to lead Team Scotland to glory as senior management set their sights on a day-one gold rush at Glasgow 2014.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chairman Michael Cavanagh fully expects the host nation to have bagged at least one gold medal by the end today’s opening programme.

Home hopes are pinned on Olympic hero Jamieson and former world champion Hannah Miley – both in action at Tollcross Pool – while cycling and judo are among the other sports expected to deliver. Gold standard: Michael Jamieson is a major gold medal contender in the pool

‘Our expectation is that, at the end of the night, Scotland will have gold on the medal board – absolutely,’ said Cavanagh.

‘But it’s sport. Michael Jamieson will do everything he can to win a gold medal, as will Hannah Miley, as will Aileen McGlynn and the other athletes going on that day. They’ll be giving it everything.

‘Form right now and home advantage points to success. Michael is a really strong prospect – but even Ross Murdoch, his own team-mate, is pushing him hard.

‘Michael is always confident, he knows what shape he’s in, he’s talking confidently. Of all the athletes in the team, if you’re looking for someone to step up when the pressure on, Michael is your man.

ZENITH BANK WOMEN BASKETBALL LEAGUE: First Deepwater, First Bank lead first phase

With the conclusion of the first phase of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) organised Zenith Bank Women Basketball League last weekend in Abuja defending champion First Deepwater Basketball Club and former champion First Bank basketball club remain the only clubs to maintain 100 per cent record in their respective groups.

Sixteen teams began the race for a comfortable finish ahead the second phase billed for Ilorin, Kwara State from May 1 through 11 but at the end of the energy sapping round-robin league the four-time champion First Deepwater Basketball Club proved to be the real champion though not without some sort of competition from group-A opponents, especially the game against the IGP Queens Basketball Club which ended 64-45 with the Police team providing some scary moment in the first two quarters.

Coach Lateef Erinfolami and his girls clearly defined their mission, to keep a clean slate going into the next phase which they have successfully done leaving other teams to fight for the remaining three slots going into the final phase scheduled for Lagos later in the year.

In group-B, First Bank Basketball Club is clearly ahead of other teams in the group as it maintained an unbeaten run as the first phase ended in Abuja.

Though not without some patch moment against Nigeria Customs Basketball on Match Day-4 when the border girls gave the former Nigeria league champion something to address, First Bank went on to win the game by 42-31 . Its head coach Adewumi Aderemi said the game against Customs was a wake-up call that no team is a push-over in the Zenith Bank league.

As if the fight Customs gave the former 10-time champion of the Nigeria women league was not enough last season, runner-up Dolphins Basketball Club was out to prove a point that her last season semi-final win over the Elephant Girls was not a fluke as the Wale Aboderin girls matched the bankers strength for strength in a game described by pundits as the best game of the first phase.

Coach Aderemi and his wards prevailed at the buzzer by 48-41 points but were quick to admit that the Zenith Bank league has indeed come of age and standard.

The 16 teams in the league will move to Ilorin for the next phase in May with the top-four teams from each group making it to the last leg of the league in Lagos.

  • ‘Shehu of Borno to lead Fed Govt’s delegation to Hajj’

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Umar Garbai, has been appointed as the National Amirul Hajj and Leader of the Federal Government’s delegation to the 2013 Hajj.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, said this yesterday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2013 Hajj operations organised by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

He said the appointment of Garbai was in line with the agreement that Hajj delegation should always cut across the leadership of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

Garbai is the NSCIA Deputy President.

“Therefore, another Amirul Hajj for the 2014 Hajj is expected to emerge from the southern or western part of the country,” the Sultan said.

He said with the 20 per cent reduction in the number of those to make up the Nigerian contingent to the 2013 Hajj, priority would be accorded first timers.

  • IG leads 3000 policemen for Jonathan’s visit to Borno, Yobe

IG leads 3000 policemen for Jonathan’s visit to Borno, Yobe

More than 3,000 policemen and 100 State Security Service (SSS) operatives have been deployed in Borno State to protect President Goodluck Jonathan, who is visiting the state and neighbouring Yobe between today and tomorrow.

The two states are the epicentre of Boko Haram’s activities. Thousands have been killed in the insurgency launched by the sect, which is pushing for sharia, the strict Islamic code, among others.

The security cover for the President’s first visit since the insurgency began, will be coordinated by the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice-Admiral Ibrahim Ola Sa’ad and Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar.

Following security advice on restriction of movement, the Borno State government has declared Friday a public holiday.

It was gathered that more than 100 SSS operatives from Gombe, Bauchi and other nearby states were deployed for the President’s visit.

The President will be accompanied by nine ministers. They are those in charge of Works, Education, Mines and Steel, Water Resources, Agriculture, Power, Environment, Housing and Urban Development. The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Dr. Sani Sidi, is also on the entourage.

“To ensure water-tight protection for the President, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector-General of Police, and other security chiefs are expected to co-ordinate this.

“The President’s advance team is already in Maiduguri as part of the preparations for the visit”, a source said.

Another source in Borno State said: “We are expecting the President to pass the night in Maiduguri on Thursday after his visit to Yobe. The President will meet with stakeholders at a Town Hall Meeting on Friday in Maiduguri .

“As part of the visit to Borno, there will be tight screening of vehicles and movement will be restricted. As a matter of fact, the number of reporters covering the trip will be restricted.”

Since these security measures are likely to cause inconvenience for the people of Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima declared Friday a work-free day.

“This holiday will enable most residents of Maiduguri to stay at home and watch the state visit live on television.

“I can tell you that it is the tight security arrangement that has accounted for the public holiday,” he said.

Secretary to Yobe State Government Babagoni Machina said all was set for the visit.

Machina said: “We hope the visit will afford the President the opportunity to appreciate the development that has taken place in the state in the past few years.

“As you can see, all arrangements have been completed and we are ready to receive President Jonathan. We are also happy to have the president visiting our state and we pray that Allah will bring him safely and take him back safely as well.”

Commissioner of Police Sanusi Rufai said his men were leaving no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free visit by the commander-in-chief.

He said more reinforcement of men had been brought to the state, adding that “all our men and officers have the operation order and plan which we have since put in place.”

He urged hoodlums not to attempt any breach of the peace during the visit.

Jonathan is expected to inaugurate some projects. Some of the projects include the 300 housing units along Gujba bye-pass, built by the state government, the dual carriage road and the ultra-modern library at the Yobe State University.

Commissioner for Housing Mohammed Ago Dala, said all the houses were built to standard awaiting inauguration.

He described the housing as second to none, adding that “people get houses in Yobe almost free because it is only in Yobe State that houses are subsidised by 65 per cent and in the event of death, all unpaid balances are waived by the government”.

Damaturu, the state capital, is wearing a new look. The Ministry of Environment is battling to keep the town clean.

Posters of President Jonathan and Governor Ibrahim Gaidam have taken over the major streets and electric poles.

The Ministry of Works, through direct labour, has filed the potholes on Damaturu roads.

  • You must step on toes to lead in Nigeria, says Obasanjo

You must step on toes to lead in Nigeria, says Obasanjo

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said it is inevitable for a leader who wants to succeed in Nigeria to step on toes.

He said those who lack the courage to step on toes for the right reason should not aspire to any leadership position.

The former President spoke in Abeokuta at an event organised by the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Ogun State to honour and celebrate him as an international Icon, statesman, living legend and leader.

Obasanjo told his audience including a former President of Ghana,Mr.John Kuffor ,that he has no apology or explanation to make for some of the drastic decisions he took while in office ,particularly when he served as an army officer.

Those decisions, according to him, were taken in the best interest of moving the country forward.

He said only his conscience and the interest of the majority of Nigerians determined his public and private decisions.

Obasanjo said: “The issue of leadership is a great issue particularly for a country like this(Nigeria) if we are going to move forward. And you can’t be a leader if you will not step on toes. Even if you are a leader in a church or in the mosque if you have to do what is right, you will occasionally step on toes.

“Leadership is a responsibility and as for me what I’m going to do I consider three reasons: can I defend it before people? will my conscience ever remain clear after doing it? and what I’m going to do will it serve the majority good?

He also said he has never participated in the planning and execution of coup in the country. He said he was always invited to participate in government by those behind the coups.

“I always sat down jeje and they would call me,” Obasanjo said.

He urged Nigerians to put the civil war behind them, saying it is shocking that 43 years after the war some Nigerians are still “mourning and groaning” about it.

The former President spoke in reaction to the speech of Mr Ben Gbulie ,who fought on the side of the defunct Biafra.

Gbulie, who spoke on Obasanjo as a Military strategist, said the Igbos fought the war in self defence and to save their people from extermination by the then Federal Government.

But Obasanjo who received the instrument of surrender from the Biafran military said the entire war was unnecessary.”

He said: I have always said that the whole episode is unnecessary but we should also remember one thing: action and reaction in physics are equal and opposite both in human interaction. No reaction is greater than action, you know that and I know that and I believe the time has come when all of us in this country we should put the civil war behind us whether you call it Biafra, whether you call yourself rebel I believe enough is a enough about Nigeria civil war.”

Other speakers included Senate President, David Mark; former Interim Head of State, Ernest Shonekan; former Ghanaian President, John Kuffour; former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili; former Special Adviser to Obasanjo on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Giwa; former Agriculture Minister under Obasanjo, Alhaji Adamu Bello; and the former president’s childhood friend, Oba Michael Omobolade, the Olubara of Ibara,Abeokuta.

They all agreed described Obasanjo as a dedicated Nigerian leader, peace loving and an individual, whose love for the country is unrivalled.

Factional Chairman of PDP in Ogun State, Dipo Odujirin told the gathering that the event tagged – Celebrating Baba Obasanjo – was meant honour him while alive, as against the general practice of honouring people only at their death.

He said the event was to highlight the many contributions of Obasanjo to the growth of the country and the sustainance of its unity.

Shonekan, who was the event’s Chairman, said Obasanjo came from a humble background, rose above his unviable background and other obstacles to attain positions of political relevance, where he impacted positively on the country.

Kufour, who was the guest speaker, reflected on the relationship between his country and Nigeria, which he said was enhanced during his time and that of Obasnjo as leaders of both countries. He cited instances where Nigeria, under Obasanjo assisted Ghana in overcoming its challenges when he assumed office in 2001

He described Obadanjo as a pan-Africanist and a great diplomat who helped to maintain peace in the continent.

Speaking on the topic: Obasanjo – His early years, Omolade, who was Obasanjo’s class mamte at Baptist Boys High School,Abeokuta, said the two of them were united not only by being mates in school, but by poverty.

The traditional ruler said they had to engage in menial jobs to raise funds for their school fees and other basic needs. He described Obasanjo an intelligent and shrewd person, who never allows any challenge to bother him.

He recalled when Obasanjo visited his palace 24 hours after his release from prison, knocked on the door and announced himself as a prisoner, thus making fun of himself.

Speaking on the topic, Obasanjo: The gusty administrator, Ezekwesili described Obasanjo as a leader, who is an embodiment of all the contraditctions in leadership. Citing instnaces where Obasanjo exhibited what she called attributes of a true leader, Ezekwesili said Obasanjo would always support any cause he believes in.

Ezekwesili debunked rumour that Obasanjo fathered her during the Civil War. She said she was born at the Island Maternity in Lagos in 1963, years before the war.

Dignitaries who came to celebrate Chief Obasanjo popularly Ebora of Owu Kingdom included the SENATE President, David Mark, Governor Ibikunle Amosun represented by his Deputy, Prince Segun Adesegun, Obasanjo’s former Minister, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, former President of Ghana, Mr John Kufour, former of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Minister of Police Affairs, Retired Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade, PDP Chieftain in Ogun State, Chief Bode Mustapha, Senator Gbenga Obadara, Adamawa State Governor, Muritala Nyako, the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief (Mrs) Alaba Lawson, Ekiti State former Governor, Engr. Olusegun Oni, his Ondo State counterpart, Dr Segun Agagu, Alhaja Salmot Badru, Vice – Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahmon Bello, Mr Ben Gbulie, and retired Rear Admiral Akin Aduwo among others.

Other in the gathering were Police Affairs Minister, Caleb Olubolade, Communication Minister, Mobolaji Johnson and Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State. The PDP Chairman, Bamanga Turku was represented by his Special Assistant, Ishola Filani.
