  • French League: Quadri humiliates Assar to lift Jura Morez to seventh place

French League: Quadri humiliates Assar to lift Jura Morez to seventh place

This year, Aruna Quadri has played second fiddle to Omar Assar in continental tournaments but last week in the Premier division of French Table Tennis League, Quadri mesmerised Assar to take his team, Jura Morez to seventh place on the league table.

Out of the four titles won by Assar this year, three of them were at the expense of Quadri with the last being the men’s singles laurel at the 2015 African Games in Congo Brazzaville.

However, Quadri has put the losses behind him and as a professional who understood the dynamism of sport, the 2014  ITTF Star Player showed his class against Assar as both players led their teams – Jura Morez and Istres in the league encounter hosted by Jura Morez.

The encounter provided another opportunity for  Africa’s two  best players to test might and showed supremacy against each other.

But it was Quadri’s teammate, Zhen Wang that drew the first blood against French international, Benjamin Brossier with the Chinese-born star winning 11-4, 11-3, 11-8 to give Jura Morez a 1-0 lead.

The onus of increasing the lead now rested on Quadri when he battled Assar in the second game and the two players threw caution to the wind to give the spectators something to cheer.

As if Quadri wanted to revenge the defeats he has suffered in the hand of the Egyptian, the Nigerian wasted no time in humiliating Assar 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 for Jura Morez to take a 2-0 lead.

Andre Sliva compounded the woe of Istres when he walloped Paul Gauzy 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 to keep the encounter beyond their opponent.

As the star player of Istres, Assar returned to the table to restore his team’s hope but he met his waterloo against Zhen Wang who completed the rout at 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 to record the fastest win in the history of the French league.

In an unsportsmanship attitude, Assar left the venue without the usual embrace of opponents synonymous with sports. Aside this, he also abandoned his team to the disappointment of everybody at the venue.

However, Quadri described the victory as a boost to his team, while describing the win against Assar as a confirmation of his improvement since joining the French League.

“I am happy not because I beat Assar but that my team was able to escape the relegation zone and move to seventh place in the league. This is a major victory for us even as we look forward to our next match on Monday December 21 against fourth place side – Boulogne Billancourt, which has England international, Paul Drinkhall in its fold. We hope we can maintain our stand to 2016,” Quadri said.

  • SIASIA TO LEAGUE CLUBS: Seek permission from NFF, not me

SIASIA TO LEAGUE CLUBS: Seek permission from NFF, not me

Coach Samson Siasia has directed all clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) requesting for the release of their players for league games to send their requests to the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mohammed Sanusi, as he (Siasia) has no power to release any player.

Expressing displeasure at the requests being made by these clubs for the release of their players, Coach Siasia said: “While I understand with them that they need their players for club engagements, I also want to remind them that they need to co-operate with us to qualify for the football event of the Rio Olympic Games, and the only way we can achieve this objective is by having all the players in camp to train so we can pick only the best legs.”

The U-23 supremo disclosed that for now, no player will be released from the camp, and that aside those in the Super Eagles B that were in Ouagadougou for Sunday’s CHAN qualifier against the Etalons of Burkina Faso, all other players must report to camp and be part of the team’s training session today, or forget about reporting to camp altogether.

  • PROMOTION TO GLO PREMIER LEAGUE: Lumumba Adeh blasts NFF, NNL

PROMOTION TO GLO PREMIER LEAGUE: Lumumba Adeh blasts NFF, NNL

Former first vice Chairman of the Nigeria League Management board’s interim committee Honourable Lumumba Adeh has criticised the NFF and NNL for declaring Adamawa United the team to be promoted instead of Plateau United.

Lumumba, in a communiqué sent to Sportinglife  yesterday, wondered how an away team, in this instance, Plateau United are made liable for shortcomings in a game where the home team is exonerated.

Lumumba argued further that is was preposterous for the NFF to hinge its judgment on what happened to Adamawa against Taraba United stressing that the two instances are difference since in the case of Plateau, they were the visitors unlike in Adamawa’s, where they were the host team.

Details of Lumumba’s communiqué: The Case of Desperate Determination of NFF/NNL to Confirm Her Predetermined Candidate for Promotion to the Premier League.

It is now becoming clear to the innocent minds following the drama at the NFF/NNL with respect to the NNL 2015 Abridged League Division A1- The case of Plateau United and Adamawa United.

It became suspicious when the O & D committee of the NFF ruled in favour of Adamawa Utd in a protest case between Adamawa and Kogi Utd; a case which the NNL had ruled for the match to be replayed in Lokoja to everyone’s surprise.

KogiUtd expectedly disagreed and appealed against the decision.

Traditionally, the appeal was expected to be dealt with before the last round of matches (week 14) outstanding to round up the league in that group but the NNL/NNF surreptitiously ordered the last set of matches to be played against protestations, appeals and advice.

The Match; Week 14 – Spotlite FC KatsinaVs Plateau Utd FC, Jos @ Katsina Township Stadium

For the avoidance of doubt, Spotlite FC was the host as home team with Plateau Utd as away (visiting) team.

As a tradition all matches on the last fixture take place simultaneously and clear directives are given to the match officials viz referees and match commissioner. Therefore, the issue of control of time and timing rest with the officials listed above, the home team and the host FA.

Usually it is agreed at the rematch the time for arrival of both teams for the match; and it is not stated anywhere that Plateau United FC defaulted by arriving late or refused any instructions from match officials.

With the result and conclusion of the match not in contention, it is absurd that the away team is made to suffer loss of points in a very controversial ruling with no place in the rule books.

With Plateau winning away which they never expected because of the desperate standing of Spotlite on the league table (threatened by relegation), the schemers threw caution to the wind and encouraged Spotlite to protest against late start of the match. Even Adamawa Utd also filed a similar protest.

    NOTE

    1. It is to be noted that the O & D committee has some lawyers as members.
    2. Even in the face of all these the appeal of Kogi Utd is pending and uncleared just to see the outcome of their schemes and use it as a joker.

iii.  The O & D is shamelessly trying to cover up by making reference to a 2010/2011 case between Adamawa Utd and Taraba Utd as precedence. The two cases have no similarity at all. Even for the fact that Adamawa hosted that match in question.

    1. Speculations are rife that the leadership of the NFF wants to use this ‘favour’ to please a top ranking government official from Adamawa state whose name is being dropped all around.

This arbitrariness must not be allowed to continue in the interest of the development of football in Nigeria especially given the stance of the new government of Buhari against corruption. There is no better example than this as corruption is necessary not limited to financial matters.

    CALLS

    1. The NFF to dissolve the O & D committee immediately to save her face
    2. The government to investigate the operations and dealings in the NFF just as in NNPC, NPA, NIMASA and the likes
    3. Plateau United and her owners, the state government of Plateau to resist this wicked and insulting ruling that smack of arrogance of power and abuse of privilege. Forward without delay a petition to both houses of the National Assembly.
    4. The issue of legality of the NFF as an entity within the sovereignty of Nigeria should now be tackled once and for all by establishing an authentic law to guide its operation and avoid the trampling on the rights of individuals and entities.

Basketball: D’Tigress Ogoke dazzles in Spanish League

After a slow start to her career at Celta Baloncesta Femenino of Spain, D’Tigress point guard, Sarah Ogoke made 27 points and nine rebounds as her team lost to Ensino Lugo 63-71 on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Nigerian international, who joined the team after a grueling time at the African Games in Congo Brazzaville and the Afrobasket where Nigeria finished second and third respectively, was unable to save her team from defeat.

Ogoke told Sportinglife that she is the oldest in the team and that most of the players were mostly U-18.

“My team is very young with just 10 players. One is currently injured and five of the remaining 9 are under the age of 18. I am the oldest at age 25. The next oldest person is 21, which shows that the team is work in progress and will return to winning way soon. The season has just started, so, all I can do is lead by example and encourage the youngsters,” she added.

According to Ogoke, winning the next game would be good for team spirit and instill confidence in the young team.

“I am sure we’ll win the next game. We are improving and the only way for us is to move forward because that is how we can measure our progress. I started off a bit slow with my new team because of the stress from the travel from Afrobasket to Spain, but I am ready to take my rightful place and move the team forward.”

She also thanked her teammates for helping her use to life in Spain. “My teammates are very kind. Although Spanish is their native language, they all try their best to speak English with me. And I’m also learning Spanish as well.

“We spend a lot of time together on the court and we also go out to eat dinner together and such I am bonding with the team as fast as I can. The coaching staff is also very supportive and I will continue to learn as I take my game to the top,” she added.

Ogoke was snapped up by Primerio D’Agosto of Angola last season after doing so well with First Bank Basketball Club at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women in Tunisia in 2014.

  • League has recovered its groove – Chukwu

League has recovered its groove – Chukwu

FORMER internatioNAL Christian Chukwu believes the golden era of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has been gradually restored even as he warned all five front runners in the Glo Premier League not to consider the title won until the last day of the season.

The former Rangers and Heartland Coach attributed the surge in attendance at matches to the reforms in the league which has witnessed strict enforcement of regulations and tasked the League Management Company (LMC) to continue monitoring the remaining games closely to ensure the season ended on a high.

On the title chase, he stressed that none of the current title contenders; Enyimba International, Warri Wolves, Wikki Tourists, FC Giwa and Sunshine Stars can claim absolute certainty of winning the league until probably when the last match of the season has been played.

From the captain of Nigeria’s first Nations Cup success in 1980 came this observation: “It is obvious that the Nigeria Premier League is getting better based on what we have witnessed in the past three seasons, and kudos to the organisers for their initiatives”.

“The huge presence of spectators at designated League venues these days is an icing on the cake for a high performance and the elite league is now competitive and attractive to watch. I believe with time, the days when Nigerian fans rely on foreign leagues to enjoy good football will be over”.

He said improved officiating of games, tight security at match venues and other creative incentives given to players and their clubs have given the league the credibility it lacked for many years.

“What fascinates me is that more people are now storming the Stadia to watch our league. I have watched some high quality NPL matches this season and the tie between Rangers and Warri Wolves was another fantastic encounter. It’s as if the game should not end because of its sweetness”, Chukwu, popularly known as the Chairman told npfl.ng in Enugu.

After watching an exciting Matchday 33 between Rangers International and Warri Wolves at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, Chukwu, nicknamed Chairman in his playing days agreed that the set standards have enhanced the professional behaviour of club managers, players, referees and other stakeholders in the league.

He said that “all eyes are on the Glo Premier League in Nigeria right now because of the giant strides so far achieved by the organisers, hence the need to sustain the enforcement of regulations”.

According to him, “there has been a general shift in public mood about the Nigeria Premier League because clubs now win games anywhere (home or away) without fear of intimidation”.

He spoke against the background of swift sanctions the LMC have been levying on players and Club Managers and Match Officials for unacceptable on and off field conducts as part of the regeneration of domestic football league in the country.

“However, I want them to continue with their zero tolerance approach to on-field misbehaviors of the players and officials including the Referees. Such stringent measures are needed if the best clubs must emerge as authentic winners of the league”, he advised.

  • Sunshine can’t win the league this season – Boboye

Sunshine can’t win the league this season – Boboye

Sunshine Stars coach,Kennedy Boboye  has admitted that his team can’t win the Glo Premier League title after they suffered a 3-0 loss against Warri Wolves in Warri last Saturday.

Following the heavy defeat, Boboye was of the opinion that it would take a miracle for his team to win the league title this season.

Sunshine Stars are hoping to win what would be their first ever title but now find themselves five points behind leaders,Enyimba.

Sunshine will travel to Kano next weekend to face champions Kano Pillars in  another high profile game.

Coach Boboye admitted that this defeat by the seasiders leaves his team with little hope of winning the title.

“It’s going to be difficult for us to now win the title,” the former Sharks tactician confessed after the game.

“We came here (Warri) with the intention of winning the game, but my boys especially the midfielders failed to play to instructions.

“We will do our best in the remaining six games, but it’s going to be a massive task for us if Enyimba beat Heartland in Owerri or pick a point there. Our next game is against Kano Pillars in Kano which is a difficult place to go.”
